Email us at hello@christywright.com to let us know what you think of the show.   The reality of running a business is that you’re going to run into things you just don’t know how to do. So, today, we’re talking about building confidence. No matter how much we talk about confidence, we always have more to learn. I also get to sit down with Academy member Sarah Lewis to talk about how she can build her confidence in business. Finally, we’ll take some time to journal and reflect.   What Confidence Actually Looks Like The idea of confidence can be so hard to grasp. Why is that? I’ve been reflecting on this recently, and here’s what I’ve found: Confidence looks like courage, sounds like leadership, and feels like peace. Confident people seem like they have it all together. But you know what? They don’t have it all figured out, but they do have courage. They’re willing to put themselves out there, willing to fail, and willing to do it scared. Your confidence doesn't have to come from your situation or your circumstances. It doesn’t even have to come from you. The true source of confidence is in the God that created you to begin with, and that feels like peace.   How to Be a More Confident Business Owner My good friend and Academy member Sarah Lewis is joining me in the studio today to talk about growing confidence as a business owner. So often, we buy into the lie that we need to be good at everything to be confident, especially in our businesses. But the truth is that you can’t be good at everything. You’re not going to be good at every single thing, and you’re not going to do it all perfectly. I hope you’re encouraged by our conversation and inspired to find confidence in the things you’re good at too.   What Does Confidence Mean to You? So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. — Hebrews 10:35–36 (NIV) Confidence doesn't come from our circumstances. True confidence comes from who we are in God. And when we remember that, we have every reason in the world to be confident, to be at peace, to have courage, to be bold, to feel secure, and to be comfortable in our own skin. I hope you take some time today to journal and work through these questions: In what areas of your life are you most confident now? What habits help you build your confidence? What Scriptures help you feel confident? What Bible verses do you cling to? What is confidence to you? Define it.

Why does our once beautiful, exciting adventure begin to rob us of our mental clarity, block our creativity, and the results we know will make our dream business a reality become compromised? Extraordinary Message, Ordinary Messengers Luke 2:8-21 Exegetical Main Point: God continues to choose to celebrate (announce) the coming of the kingdom with lowly shepherds of Bethlehem. Even more, they became some of the first messengers of the Good News of Christ’s salvation. Main Point of the Sermon: God chose ordinary messengers to proclaim his extraordinary message. Me: My parents didn’t grow up in Gospel centered homes. It was the grace of God that led faithful disciple-makers into their lives who would lead them to a saving knowledge of Jesus. For my father, it was young man in the Navy by the name of Gene, and for my mother it was local family, the Ledford’s, who welcomed their neighbor, an only child, into their home to be with their big family and to hear and see the Gospel of Jesus. This is why I grew up hearing the Gospel, because ordinary people shared Christ with my parents. I am indebted to my parents and to those families who shared with my parents. Each of you could share similar stories. This is how the Kingdom spreads, through ordinary messengers who have heard and seen the Good News of Jesus. Sometimes I forget how amazing this is. I could have been born into a very different family, maybe one that rejected the Gospel for a materialistic worldview. Or I could have been born in a village or country that doesn’t allow God’s Word to be printed or distributed; Even worse, I could have grown up in a place where I spoke a language that the Bible had not yet been translated to, that missionaries had never come to. There are still many people groups like these. Sometimes I forget that this message is not one that everyone knows. I’ve even had people right outside this building tell me that they have never had someone share the Gospel with them before. The Gospel of Jesus is humanity’s greatest need, and so many around us and far from us don’t know it, so I ask myself why do I have to constantly be reminded to share this Good News with others? It should be on the tip of my tongue daily! We: Why does our enthusiasm for sharing the Gospel so easily fade? Do any of you relate to this? Do you remember what it was like when you first believed? You almost can’t contain the news. You want to share with everyone! The least knowledgeable are sometimes the most vocal! Was that you? What happened? What has quenched our joy over this message? Is there something more important to us than this message? What’s it going to take rekindle that joy in sharing the Gospel? Well, a couple weeks back I preached a message titled “Hearts that Praise”, emphasizing that people who have small praise are people that have a small view of God. A fresh vision of God and self will cause us to worship greatly. This week’s text captures a similar theme, but goes a step further. When the shepherds of Bethlehem heard the extraordinary message about Jesus they were driven to share the Good News with others. Let’s get into the text to see the what motivated their joy-filled proclamation. My prayer is that our joy in sharing this message will be rekindled. Here’s where we are going today: 8-9 Extraordinary Celebration 10-16 Extraordinary Message 17-21 Ordinary Messengers Main Point:God chose ordinary messengers to proclaim his extraordinary message. 8-10 Extraordinary Celebration Context: Last week we heard that after Mary had given birth to Jesus, she laid him in a manger, a feeding trough, showing the absurd humility of our God. It was the greed of Caesar calling for a census that lead Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, the city of their ancestors. Far from home and family, surely exhausted from giving birth, young teenage Mary and her newlywed husband, Joseph, sheltered and rested looking at their first-born son – promised to be King, but lying in a manger. Feelings of joy and wonder mixed with pain and discomfort would have surely filled their hearts. In verse 8 Luke tells us that it was in the fields near Bethlehem at night when an extraordinary celebration erupted. We’re not told how much time passed since the birth, but the flow of the narrative would suggest that it was not too long. It would have been quiet and slow, as they awaited the dawn of day, keeping watch for wild beasts and thieves. Just imagine that moment, all was still as they gazed at the stars, perhaps sitting around a fire, only the sounds of crickets, crackling wood, and bleating sheep. What an accurate picture of the whole world, completely unaware of the significance of the moments that had just passed – an event that the Scriptures describe as the fullness of time. All of human history was leading to this moment, the birth of the Messiah, but nobody knew. The royal family of the United Kingdom cannot escape paparazzi who want any glimpse they can get of the royal children and family. But the King of the whole world was born while the world slept. God had just entered human history. The world would never be the same. But lest we mistake this lowly birth as a lowly event, God threw an extraordinary celebration with some ordinary people and had it recorded so that we could marvel together! Verse 9 tells us that into the darkness and silence, “an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. An angel appeared before the shepherds and blinding light mimicking the sun, risen in an instant, shone around them; they were terrified! (I would have been too). This description and response of fear is typical when God comes near to humans in Scripture (cf. think Jesus’s transfiguration; Paul’s encounter on the road to Damascus). Angel means “sent one”. Angels are created beings, God’s messengers and servants who stand in his presence. They are the closest beings to God in heaven and so when come near, God’s blazing glory lingers on them, shines around them. Though the shepherds had every reason to fear, verse 10 tells us that “the angel said to them, “Fear not.” This response is so comforting to me.Since the fall of man, angels with flaming swords were placed between God and men invoking holy and reverent fear, but God’s mercy moves him towards humans not to destroy them, but to offer comfort. Even more, to offer Good News! In verse 10 the angel says, “behold – “look or see”, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people”. In other words, I’m not here to hurt you; I’m not here to bring God’s wrath, Shepherds, but to tell you God’s “GOOD news”, a message that will bring great joy! Just imagine, God chose to celebrate the birth of Jesus not with kings and famous people, not with the holiest priests and teachers, but with the lowliest of the lowly. Just as he choose a poor peasant teenage girl to mother the Son of God, in a nowhere place like Nazareth, God chose to make the news of Christ’s birth known first to some grungy blue collar workers in the fields of Bethlehem. And this will be typical of Jesus’s ministry. Even when he raises from death the first to know of his resurrection are women, who were considered some of the lowest on the social totem pole. God didn’t come to the high places first because then the lowly and poor would be overlooked. He stooped to the low so that all peoplewould hear and God’s wisdom would be shown. Do you see the compassion and humility of our God? He knows even you? Behold our God and the Good News he brings to you today! But the celebration was not over. Let’s look at verse 11-16 to hear the extraordinary message. 11-16 Extraordinary Message 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Remember that word “for” can be translated because. Why is this message Good News of great joy stirring such a celebration? Because a savior is born, who is Christ the Lord! Notice that the angel doesn’t call the city Bethlehem, but “the city of David. He is making a point that this is the long-awaited son of David, the Christ, which is the Greek form of the Hebrew word Messiah. He is the Lord who would reign forever and ever. The Messiah was born! This is extraordinary itself, but it was even more extraordinary because of the way in which he was born! Look at verse 12: 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” The Messiah, the one expected to wipe out their enemies and bring prosperity and peace once again to Israel like in the days of King David and Solomon, would be found wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. What?! The paradox of verses 11 and 12 should cause us to worship our God in awe. The Son of God, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords having his beginning in a feeding trough far from home – literally and figuratively. This was Immanuel, God with us, the Word made flesh, come to show us God’s nature. This should cause us to marvel and worship our God for his humility! Indeed, it caused all of heaven to worship. Luke records in verse 13 that “suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God…” The one angel and the glory of God shining around them wasn’t enough of a celebration for this news! Luke records what they sang in verse 14. It required a concert of joy! They said, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.” This song is packed with meaning. It shows us that the Good News of Jesus has two primary effects: 1) it brings glory to God, 2) it brings peace to man. In the coming of the Son of God, God’s glory is revealed in that we see his gracious character, his humility, his love, poured out in this amazing birth. But God’s glory is displayed most fully in the peace that he would bring to earth. The sin-scarred world, sin-scarred mankind has long endured the effects of the fall of man, but Jesus came to recreate us, to reconcile us to God, that is to restore the peace that he had with man in the garden of Eden. But he is not only interested in restoring his relationship with you. He wants to restore peace to your own heart. When humans find peace with God, they are surprised to find so many other things falling into place. They aren’t anxious in the same ways, they don’t grumble in the same ways, they have power to fight sin. Though this all comes in an ongoing process called sanctification, this is the peace that Christ came to bring you. He also came to bring peace to your relationships – so that slander and fighting will cease, so that forgiveness can reign because of how much we have been forgiven. And he will finally even bring peace to our relationship with all of creation. The ground will no longer be cursed and we will no longer fear the beasts of the field. His rule on earth is described this way in Isaiah: “Of the increase of his government and of peacethere will be no end (Isaiah 9:7).” The birth of this Savior would truly make all thingsnew. Pastor John Piper comments on the angel’s song, “There is hardly a better way to sum up what God was about when he created the world, or [what he was about] when he came to reclaim the world in Jesus Christ—his glory, our peace. His greatness, our joy. His beauty, our pleasure. The point of creation and redemption is that God is glorious and means to be known and praised for his glory by a peace-filled new humanity.[1] But it’s important to notice in verse 14b that God’s peace doesn’t come to everyone, but only to those “with whom he is pleased.” But Daniel, didn’t the angel just say that this message is for all the people? Yes, the Gospel of peace is available for all, but will only bring peace to the one God favors. Who does God show favor to? He shows favor to those who believe in Jesus. How do you know if God’s favor is on you – if you receive Jesus as Lord. If you are here today and have not surrendered to Jesus as Lord, Oh how I pray that you would turn to him and find peace today. If you read this line “with those whom he is pleased” and think, you’re excluded because of your sin, you are mistaken. The shepherds probably weren’t the holiest men, but God offered even these lowly shepherds his peace. Their job was difficult. The wicked rulers over Israel made it even worse. The burdens they carried daily probably added greater temptation towards a life of vice, but God came to even them. Christianity is the most inclusive faith in the world, the most tolerant – inviting anyone and everyone, no matter how great your sins, to come and find peace with God. But it is also exclusive in that the saving benefits of the Gospel only belong to those who believe in Jesus who died for sins and follow him. This is the extraordinary message that compelled the Shepherds to share. Verse 15 tells us that after the heavenly celebration, the angels departed and things went back to normal. They once again heard the bleating sheep, the crickets, and maybe the heavy breathing of one another at this point. I imagine wide eyes and speechlessness, but then someone spoke up, saying, “let’s go to Bethlehem and see for ourselves!” Luke, capturing this story perhaps from the shepherds themselves, tells us in verse 16 that they rushed to see what had happened and they “found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger.” Having heard the celebration of the angels and their extraordinary message, the ordinary shepherds became God’s messengers. 17-21 Ordinary Messengers 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. This is absolutely amazing! Some of the first people to get to see the Messiah after he was born were shepherds! Even more they were maybe the first messengers of the Gospel of Jesus. When they saw it, they couldn’t help but speak, just like many of us when we first believe. They told everyone around them what the angels had told them about the child. This baffles me. It makes sense that God would send angels to share this news, but it makes a lot less sense that he would use these lowly shepherds to be his messengers. But then I consider the message of Christmas – God becoming man and lying in a manger. Then I think, who better than ordinary, broken, sinful men to carry this message? This is what makes the message so extraordinary, this is what makes God so glorious, not that any of us are worthy of benefiting from Christ’s life, not that any of us are worthy of carrying this glorious Gospel, but that in him we would become just the vessels that he wants to carry his treasure. In his humiliation we find our exaltation. In his death, we find life. Paul explains this truth: 17 If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and…committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. 2 Cor. 5:17-20 God gets the glory here, doesn’t he? He gets the glory by making sinful shepherds into missionaries of the Gospel through Christ. He gets the glory when he makes the arrogant Pastor’s kid, Daniel Simmons, into a messenger of his Kingdom! I imagine God the Father was so pleased as he watched these lowly men so excitedly share what they had heard and seen about Jesus, the Messiah. They couldn’t help but share it. Let me ask you, is this true of you this Christmas? Does this story about Jesus land on your ears and cause you to go back to work and life the same, or has this message of Jesus moved you in such a way that you can’t help but open your mouth and talk about it? What’s your response? Verse 18 shows us three different responses to the message. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. Notice the contrast that Luke sets up here between the average listeners and Mary with the conjunction “but”. Everyone wondered, but Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. The message had a deeper effect on Mary than on everyone else. This is not a throwaway statement for Luke. Luke is not talking about fuzzy feelings here, but is teaching a profound truth about how Christ’s Kingdom would spread on earth. The life and message of Christ the King would cause varying reactions, and that those reactions would reveal the thoughts of people’s hearts, even Mary’s. His Kingdom would spread in the hearts of those who received him. 1) The crowds wondered, 2) Mary treasured these things in her heart, and Luke tells us in verse 20 that“the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen… Their lives would never be the same. They worshipped God for all they had heard and seen! The Kingdom was advancing in their hearts. Pastor John Piper famously said, “Missions exists because worship doesn’t.” We spread this message today so that God would be praised for his great grace and wisdom. And this, church, is what I want to happen right now. My prayer is that as we see and hear this good news that heart worship will abound in us and that it would compel us to share the Good News like it did at first. Jesus’s small beginning shows God’s humility, but he didn’t stay there. Christ is not a baby in a manger any more! He conquered Satan, sin, and death and he is risen and reigning seated at the right hand of God as he builds his Church. His Kingdom has spread and will spread to the entire world by ordinary people like you and me, who have shared what they have seen and heard about Jesus. Shepherds; fishermen; prisoners like Philemon, murderers like Paul, Gentiles like Cornelius, tentmakers like Pricilla and Aquila… and on and on down to you and me. Many have died proclaiming this message because there is no greater treasure and no greater reward for those who follow Jesus by losing their life for his sake and the Gospel. You: So, what’s your response? Does the Gospel of Jesus produce joyful worship and witness? Unbelievers:This Jesus went to a cross, dying the death you deserved so that you might find peace. He is alive and is through me calling you to repent of your sin. Today is the day of salvation. Be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins and join this family. Believers: Do you take joy in the fact that God chose to use ordinary people like you to advance his Kingdom? If you still feel intimidated with trying to share your faith, take heart. You are not alone in this! When Jesus was about to ascend in to heaven, Jesus said to his disciples, 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Church, you have been empowered by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses of Christ. Christ is in you. He is with you. Even more, he doesn’t leave us alone, but he has saved us into the church, his body, so that we can together take the message to the ends of the earth. If you want your co-workers, your childhood friends, your roommates, your neighbors, even strangers in the world to know Jesus, in the power of the Spirit and with the support and prayer of this church, I urge you share the good news! It doesn’t have to be eloquent and perfectly trained. The shepherds weren’t! You are simply called to witness what you have seen and heard about Jesus. Let me share a story I heard a few years back about a poor crippled girl in Africa who was used by God mightily. This young disabled child had little to her name, and little to offer the world, but she owned a corn-stalk doll. If you saw this little girl you would find her with her doll. In this little girl’s village church, the leaders began making calls to the people to give what they could to travel to the distant villages to share the Gospel with people who had never heard. Week after week the request came, and baskets would be passed, but only a few small coins were given. Everyone was too poor to give. Until one day, the doll showed up in the offering. When the people saw the doll they were all moved to tears and begin weeping. Before long, one man in the church shouted out, “I can give a goat.” Another said, “I’ll sell some of my chickens,” and another, “I will donate some of my crops” until there was more than enough money to provide for some of the church members to take the message to the unreached. What do you have to offer? If you have found peace in Jesus and experienced his great love, you have everything you need to be an effective witness of this Gospel. Our nation needs revival – we need a re-evangelizing of our nation. It cannot be accomplished by professionals - the seminary grads and pastors! No, we need every man and woman, boy and girl. No one in this room is too young, too immature, too theologically illiterate to talk about the peace that Jesus has brought to your soul. We all need to get on board. Will you come with me? I want to challenge you today to write down one person on your phone or notebook that you will begin praying for daily and seeking opportunity to share the Gospel with them. And share this with your DNA and spouse. Maybe that’s a co-worker, or maybe an extended relative you will see over the holidays. It could be anyone. Imagine the worship that would happen in this place if even half of us got to see this person come to the Lord and join our family in 2020! There is no greater task than to be God’s mouthpiece of a saving message! That is who you are. Remember the shepherds. Let’s say that together, “remember the shepherds.” God chose ordinary messengers to proclaim his extraordinary message. We will be spending time in our prayer meeting tonight to pray for the lost and to pray for vision for reaching our city. Would you please come? Let’s pray as I invite the worship team. [1]Piper, J. He’s invited by some of the world's top salesmen to help them sell more.    He’s incredible...and amazing at it - I’ve learned SO much from him.    Every time he speaks, I take out a pen and paper...    (Hint, hint...cue, cue...to everybody here!)   Please take out a piece of paper and take notes!    This is a man who’s likely to make MORE money arrive in your pocket just by listening to him... ;-)   Mr. Myron Golden. Myron: Hey, Steve. How are you doing, man?    Steve: Fantastic. Thanks for being on here, man.   Myron: Absolutely my pleasure to be on Sales Funnel Radio, talking to one of my favorite trainers...teachers… ‘OfferMinds…’   Ooh, did you see what I did there?! ;-)   Steve: That's good!     Honestly, thanks so much for taking the time. The feeling is mutual.    I have notebooks upon notebooks from your things.    Every time you come speak...or anytime I’m at Inner Circle or one of Russell's events, I’d fill a WHOLE legal pad.    And thinking…     "Oh, man, that was amazing."       "No, that was better than the last."        "Oh, my gosh, they're getting better…”      Myron: You're kind, thank you.   Steve: You are just an incredible salesperson.    You have so much skill and so much knowledge...    I've watched you unplanned…    (...and I know you've done this multiple times!)    ….get up and pitch someone's product better than they pitch it to an audience that doesn't know you…   AND you'll make MORE sales than the actual owner of the product!   How do you do that?! I know that's a huge question, but that's amazing…   HAVING NO INHIBITIONS   Myron: First of all, how I do that in particular, is how I sell.    First and foremost, I have to believe in the thing that I'm selling. If I believe in the thing that I'm selling, then it's easy for me to sell it.    What I mean by that is...   Most salespeople don't even realize that they haven't gotten out of their own way yet.    Most people who sell things, whether they sell cars, or sell shoes, or sell online courses… or whatever...     … they believe that selling is doing something ‘TO’ people not doing something *FOR* them.    So first and foremost, I look at selling as a service.    I look at it as something that I do *FOR* people’ that makes their lives better. It makes the world a better place because people like me are selling.   So I don't have ANY inhibitions.    For example...a pitcher will have pain in his shoulder, and he can't throw the ball as fast, or a golfer will have pain in his back and he can't swing.    Because subconsciously, his body knows that, “This movement is gonna hurt me or hurt someone.”    Right?    When we are incongruent or when we have incongruence about selling in general, that makes it hard for us to sell things.    I think the thing that I have going for me when it comes to selling is that I have *NO* incongruence in me whatsoever.    If I feel like a product isn’t good, then I wouldn't sell it to somebody in the first place!    Does that make sense?    Steve: Yeah, that makes sense.   Myron: I get out of my own way.   Steve: And I mean, you've done that multiple times.    I saw you do that at Dream 100 Con.    I mean, you're the guy that Russell Brunson asks to come re-pitch ClickFunnels' amazing offer after he's pitched!   Myron: Yeah.   Steve: It's impressive.   Myron: I'm honored. I'm honored by Russell. I appreciate him more than I can say...  I've got so much belief in what he offers, that selling a Russell Brunson coaching program is easy for me to sell.   (...even though he doesn't consider himself a guru, okay? I'm gonna call him my bounce-back guru.)    Because I went out, made a fortune and had a lot of great things happen in my life.    And then…    I went through seven years of life devastation.   Like every year, major tragedy after major tragedy, of some kind, happened in my life.    ...from 2007 through 2013.    I signed up for another coaching program in 2014 and I just didn't like that kind of work.    I don't believe that the key to success is to find something you're passionate about and the money will follow.’’   I DON’T believe that's true.   Steve: I don't either.   Myron: But I do believe that…    If the work that you’re doing doesn’t match the person that you are, you will never create wealth or massive world change in that arena - because your ‘doing’ has to match your ‘being’.  Right?    The coaching program was great; they had a lot of people making A LOT of money...it just wasn't the kind of work that suited me.    After that in 2015, I joined Russell's Inner Circle and my life has been on an upward trajectory financially, ever since then.    Selling a Russell Brunson coaching program? That's like the easiest thing in the world for me to sell!    Because he is the one person who I can point at and say, incontrovertibly, has helped more people to become millionaires in a shorter period of time than ANY other human being I've ever known of.   Steve: Yeah, not even just “known of”. I've never heard of anyone doing that!   Myron: Exactly.    And he's not an MLM guy. He's just a guy who teaches you frameworks that work.    So standing up and selling his product is easy because…    I wasn't selling the product I was selling the payoff   ...and I know what the payoff is because I get paid from that payoff all the time!   So that's why, if I can look at something and it makes sense, then it's easy for me to see how it makes sense...    ...then it's easy for me to say HOW it makes sense in a way that's easy for people to receive.   Steve: It's powerful stuff! And you know what's funny?   I feel like there's a lot of people who are jumping in entrepreneurship…   (which is great!)   ….but they do it under this notion that it's NOT sales, it's “entrepreneurship”.    But  like,  “ Eh, entrepreneurship IS sales. It's a sales role."   Myron: Yeah, exactly.   Steve: And if you're lying to yourself about that, you're already a bad entrepreneur!   To be an entrepreneur is to be a salesperson.   Myron: Exactly.   Steve: How can people be better?    How can they get rid of the inhibitions around selling?   Myron: Let's start with this.    So as you just said…   The reason that people say, “I'm an entrepreneur, I'm not a salesman,"    (What does that even mean?)    ...that is because they think there's something inherently wrong with sales!    But I'm gonna fix that right now.    BLOOD & SALES   …. the people reading right now - they can agree or disagree.    If you disagree ...here's what I'm gonna say to you…   ”You've been wrong before… congratulations, it's happening again!”   So I happen to have some money in my pocket….   ….if you take some money out of your pocket, any amount of money… and you look at that money - just check it out - and you’ll realize that:    All of the money that you have...    All of the money you will ever have...   To do the things…    You desire to do for yourself...   For the people that you love...   The causes that you care about...   The only reason it's possible for me, you, or anyone else to ever have money is because somebody somewhere sold something to someone for a profit.    PERIOD.   (I wasn’t gonna go here, but I will…)   Money is like blood, right?    Money is like blood, in that, money is stored in a bank.    Where's blood stored?    Steve: In your body.   Myron: Well, no, it's stored in a blood bank.    Money is stored in a money bank, right?    Steve: Oh, I get what you're saying.   Myron: Blood is stored in a blood bank.    Blood has to be in circulation in order to give life to your body and money has to be in circulation in order to give life to the economy.   Steve: I love that.    Myron: Right? So money is very much like blood.  Blood carries oxygen to every part of your body.    Money doesn't really carry oxygen, but it does help you breathe.    … because when you don't have any money, you feel like you can't breathe.   Steve: That's true.   Myron: Right?    But also…    Money is a mass noun, just like blood is a mass noun.    Yesterday, I went and got some blood drawn - I didn't go get ‘A blood’ drawn, I got SOME blood drawn.    … even though it's singular, it's a mass noun.    So you have to put “some” (which is plural) in front of a singular word.    You'd never say "I gave A blood," because that doesn't make any sense.    I gave SOME blood. Well, guess what?    When it comes to money, you wouldn't say, "I gave A money..."   It's SOME money.    Money and blood are both mass nouns.    Money and blood are both fungible.    Q: Now, what does fungible mean?    Well, you drove my car when you were in Tampa.   Steve: Yeah, great car, beautiful car.   Myron: With my name on the floor mat.   Steve: On the floor mats right there, that was...wooooo!   Myron: I drive a Bentley Continental GT.    If I let Steve borrow my car, when he brings my car back, my car is NOT fungible.    It's a car, but he can't bring me back a Volkswagen Jetta and say, "Here Myron, here's a car."    You have to bring back the same car!    ...or at least the same kind of car in, at least the same kind of condition.   (Preferably my car, right?)   So if somebody borrows a car, a car is NOT fungible.    If somebody borrows my golf clubs...    (… I wouldn't let somebody borrow my golf clubs 'cause those are my babies!)      But if I did, it's like, "No, you can't bring me back some other golf clubs."    "Well, they're golf clubs! What difference does it make?"    No! Golf clubs are NOT fungible.    If you give blood at a blood bank and then get in a car accident, you need to go get some blood… they don't have to search through millions of pints of blood to find the exact blood you gave!   Steve: "Oh, here are your cells!"    Myron: Exactly.    They just have to find the same blood type.    It's like with money.    Money is fungible.    If you loan me $5, you don't care if I pay you back the same bill.    Or if you owe me $50 then you don't care if I pay you back a $50 bill. Or two $20s and a $10 or five $10s or 10 $5s.    You don't care.    Q: Why?    A: Because money is fungible.    As long as it's the same currency type (#American dollars), you don't care.    You don't wanna loan me $50 in American dollars and I give you back Costa Rican dollars.    That wouldn't work.    So…    Money and blood are very much alike.   So here's what you gotta realize.    The only reason any of us EVER have any money in our pocket to do…   The things we wanna do    The things we desire for ourselves    The things we desire for people we love or the causes that we care about    … is because somebody somewhere sold something to someone for a profit.    Here's what that means:    Just like money is the blood, it keeps the economy alive, money is the lifeblood of the economy.    Salespeople are the heart of the economy that keeps the blood flowing.    If you are in sales, free yourself from the idea…from this ridiculous Hollywood notion that selling is somehow doing evil in the world.    Hollywood does way more evil in the world than salespeople!   The government tries to demonize business and salesmen and entrepreneurs while they do WAY more evil in the world.     Here's what you gotta realize...    Being a person who is in sales (a salesman or saleswoman) is one of the most noble, honorable positions and vocations in the world.     You make the world go ‘round.   Once you realize how essential salespeople are in the world and how much joy they bring into the world?   Salespeople bring joy into the world!    Remember how good you felt last time somebody sold you a new car? Or somebody sold you a new house? You felt great!   Why?    Because they sold you something that made your life better.    Salespeople bring more joy into the world than almost any other profession.    So once you wrap your mind around what selling really is…   … that FREES you up from all those internal conflicts and incongruencies that create the cognitive dissonance that restrict you from going out and making your offers boldly.   Steve: I 100% believe that.   Myron: That was a long answer.   Steve: But it's an amazing answer.    It drives me crazy…. "Money's evil."    Money is NOT evil, money is an amplifier.    I feel like (most of the time) when someone is NOT good at sales, usually they need to redefine their relationship with money.    They have so many *false beliefs* around money.   Myron: Absolutely.   Steve: Do you find that to be true?    Myron: Absolutely.    I'm gonna say, money IS an amplifier, but I'm gonna add a caveat.   Because money IS an amplifier…    If you're bad, money will make you a worse person, or give you the opportunity to do more evil in the world.    If you're a good person, money will give you the opportunity to do more good in the world   HOWEVER…   Money itself is NOT bad, nor is it neutral. Money itself is good. Money is a good thing.   Steve: Right.   Myron: How can you say money is a good thing?    Q: What is the substance that represents wealth around the world since the beginning of time?    What's that substance?    Steve: Gold.   Myron: Gold, that's right.   Steve: Yeah.   Myron: Gold is the substance that represents wealth.    The first time gold is mentioned in Scripture is in the Garden of Eden.    Here's what God said, "And there was gold in that land, and the gold of that land is good."    Now, wait a minute, wait a minute!    Help me understand something here.    The Garden of Eden is a place where all the food is free.    The Garden of Eden is a place where there were only two people who ever lived there, Adam and Eve, (last I checked, they were married to each other).    There were no stores, there was nothing for sale, and yet God put gold in the Garden of Eden and then, He made sure He told us it was good.   Money is good. It's not neutral. It's not bad. It is inherently good.    You can do bad things with money, but it’s inherently good.    A car is inherently good - it's not bad to not have to walk everywhere you go!    It's good to be able to get places faster and it gives you the ability to save time and put more experiences in your life.    But people have run over people intentionally with cars!   You can do something bad with something that's good but it doesn't make the good thing bad - it just means that a person did a bad thing with it.   Steve: And the person did it, NOT the car, or the gold, or the object!   Myron: You know how you talk about the Capitalist Pig it really irritates people?    THIS MAY OFFEND YOUI'm gonna say something that really irritates people.   Steve: Yeah.    Myron: I'm not attempting intentionally to offend anybody (that's not my intention) but if they get offended…. they should probably grow up a little bit!    So the government talks about gun violence, right?    Steve: Yeah.   Myron: Oh, there's no such thing as gun violence.    I know, I just lost a bunch of people....but I lost the ones I wanted to lose.   Steve: Sure.   Myron: Okay?    There's no such thing as gun violence. I have a whole bunch of guns, not one of them is violent.   (I know I just lost a bunch of people… but I lost the ones I wanted to lose)   Steve: Me too. It's so funny, they're just sitting there and they never harmed anyone.      Myron: They don't do anything to anybody.   They just mind their own business!   In fact, they don't even mind their own business ...because they don't do anything.    They just sit there until I go to the range and I practice.    There's no such thing as gun violence, it's people violence and some of those people use guns.    Nobody talks about...   Steve: Car violence.   Myron: Car violence.    Nobody talks about fist violence.    It's stupid, it's like saying, "My stupid pencil failed that test."    *Your pencil didn't take the test*    Steve: I'm gonna use that one!    I wish I would have known that when I was in elementary school, hah.    “My pencil's broken!”   Myron: "My pencil...I can't believe this... What kind of pencil is this?!”   Steve: So we've gone through and said, “Okay, in order to get better at sales, you really need to embody…” Myron: You have to fall in love with it.   Steve: Sales are incredible.   Myron: You have to fall in love with it.   I love sales and salespeople.    Pray for salespeople every night when you go to bed. Thank God for them every morning when you wake up.    Stop being, "I can't believe that person tried to sell me something."    When somebody tries to sell something to you, get excited about it and watch their process and see what you can learn.   Instead of , "I can't stand these stupid infomercials. I can't stand these stupid commercials….”    I like infomercials… I really love them!    Steve: Me too! I watch them for fun.    Myron: Goodness, they're so entertaining!   I'm like, "Ooh, that is such a great idea!"    Steve: Oh man! So we’re saying …   THE STRUGGLE IS NOT REAL!   Number one: You can't even learn any of the skills or real tactics that you teach if you can't even accept the fact that…    Sales ARE good.   That money IS good.   Myron: Absolutely, absolutely!    And that you are doing good in the world when you sell things to people.    Do you understand that people only buy something because they value the thing they're buying more than they value the money?    It's kind of amazing when you think about it.   Steve: Yeah, money is GOOD. Sales are GOOD.    I'm writing down some of the notes here...    What else would somebody need to do?    I mean these are all major foundational pieces before you even get into tactics…   (or even things that you'll be speaking at OfferMind about)   So what else can somebody do to just increase their sales?    They're like, "Hey, I've got those things, I know sales are GOOD. I know money is GOOD."    What would be the next step?    Myron:    Realize that the struggle is not real, it's imagined.    “But sales are SO hard!”    No, no, no, no, that's just a story you tell yourself.    Sales are NOT hard, you're just NOT good at it.    I love what Jim Rohn said his mentor told him.    He said, "Mr. Rohn, Mr. Rohn. Don't wish it were easier. Wish you were better."   Steve: Ohhhhh...there's some zing on that!   Myron: That's juicy, ain't it?    Steve: It's a little sting, there. A little spicy.   Myron: Yeah, he was like, "Sales is hard."    No, no, no, no. It ain't the problem.    Sales are not hard. Sales are really, really easy! You just don't know how to do it.    Jim Rohn said his mentor, Mr. Earl Shoaff asked him, “So how much money do you make?"    He said, “Well, I don't make that much. I'm broke.”    His mentor said, “How is it that you, being 26 years old and a healthy American male...and you're broke?”    He said, “Well, I can't help it. This is the job I have. This is all they pay.”   His mentor said, “Well, now Mr. Rohn that's not true. Let me ask you a question. Are there people who work for your company that get paid more than you get paid?"    He said, "Yes."    His mentor said, "Well then, that's not all they pay. That's just all they pay YOU."   And I said, "That is so good!"   Steve: I totally I can hear his voice as you say that. You do it well!   Myron: That's all they pay *YOU*    So what we have to realize is…    Mr. Rohn said, "It's too expensive."    "No, Mr. Rohn. The problem is not that it's too expensive. The problem is that you can't afford it."    We always wanna blame it on something outside of ourselves.    We always wanna relieve ourselves from the responsibility to do the thing, but the reality is... the reality is that sales ISN’T hard…   “…I just haven't learned how to do it yet!”   I'm gonna tell you something, Steve.    I have NOT always been good at sales.    When I got started in sales in 1985 selling insurance and investments through a company called AL Williams, I was not even good enough to be bad yet.    I was so bad, I was worse than bad!    I got started in October of 1985 and I did not make my first sale until April of 1987.    I was working and doing presentations... and I was woefully awful.    See, here's what happens.    Most people are not willing to be bad long enough to get good.   I was making offers and doing presentations from October of 1985 to April of 1987.    (By the way, if you're counting that's 18 months before I made a single, solitary sale.)   Shortly after I made that first sale, I became the top salesperson in our office month after month after month after month.    Some of you will say, "Well, Myron. How did you do that? What was it that changed for you, that took you from not being able to make the sale, to being the top salesperson in your office?"    *EASY*    I ran out of all the ways that wouldn't work.   Steve: Mat time!   Myron: The only thing I had left? The ways that it WOULD work.    It's so amazing, Steve.    People resist the only activity that can help them get better at the thing they are desiring to do.   They'll create all kinds of creative avoidance around not doing the one thing, i.e.,    Making offers   Doing presentations.   DON’T HIDE   I'm gonna tell you something, I've got a young lady who's in one of my high-end coaching programs.    Her name's Eileen, I think you met her.    This particular coaching program is $40,000 and they have to put at least half down and then they get on weekly bank drafts, right?    So she's like, "Myron, I really wanna get in this and I don't have the money. I don't know what to do."    First of all, she came to me and she didn't hide from me.    She came to me and said, "I don't have the money. I don't know what to do. What should I do?"    I'm like, "This person's gonna be awesome."    … because when they didn't have the answer, they knew there was an answer…   ... and so they ASKED for the answer instead of avoiding the place where they could get the answer.   Steve: Yes. I'm a student of exceptions.    If you don't have the means, or you don't have whatever...    JUST FIND ANOTHER WAY.    It doesn't mean that you're blocked!   You keep moving!   Myron: Yeah, exactly.   Here's what I told her:    "Eileen, you already have a $4000 offer. Raise the price to six and make more offers.    In fact, take the people who are in your current database right now and give them a date at which you're gonna raise your price to $6000 and give them an opportunity to get it now for only $4000.    Raise your prices."    I said, "Then the second thing you wanna do, raise your prices and make more offers."    Now, here's what make more offers means to me: *Collapsed timeframe*.    Take the number of offers you would do in the next year and do that in the next month!   Take the number of offers you'd do in the next month and do that in the next week!   Take the number of offers you'd do in the next seven days and do that many offers today!    You will have the money in less than 30 days.    She called me a week later, "Myron, I have the money."   Steve: That's SO cool.   Myron: It’s something as simple as “make more offers”.    I can tell you story after story. That's not unusual, but it is unusual to find people who are willing...   To make an offer!    Adjust the offer and then make that offer to another person when somebody says no to their offer   Make that offer just the way it is to 10 more people just to see if the problem is the offer... OR if it’s just the way they're offering it.   Steve: Right, right.   Myron:    Most people won't allow themselves to stay in the game long enough to figure out how to win the game.   Steve: You know, it's funny. I went back and I recounted how many tries it took me... and it was 33 failures over six years!    It was painful...   Myron: Well, why didn't you quit?    Steve: Right? Yeah, I know.    Someone was like, "Why did you think you could keep going like that?"    I was like…   I realized that failure is largely made up. You just learn. Everything is progression. It's not win-lose, it's just progression.   Man, I had a lot of garbage in my own head around the beliefs in money that I had to overcome.   Myron: Absolutely.   Steve: Before I could even sell what I was making in the first place.   ALL WORK *WORKS*   Myron: Absolutely.    What's really interesting that a lot of people don't realize?    They'll say, "But Steve, it's not working! But Myron, it's not working!"    I say, "Okay, first of all, let me help you understand something. All work WORKS."   Steve: I'm gonna put that on my ceiling!   Myron: All work works. There's no such thing as, "I did that thing, and it didn't work."    Oh, it worked.    "No, no, but I made the offer and nobody bought."    It still worked.    "Well, if I made the offer and nobody bought, how can you say it worked?"    See, work is a two-sided coin.    Q: What are the two sides of the coin?    There's the work I do on it    There's work it does on me.    When the work I do on it doesn't do what I thought it would do...then the work it does on me ALWAYS does what it's supposed to do!   I know all work works.    So when I'm working on something that seems like it's NOT working, it's still working on me.    It's so interesting, we were talking about how you had six years... six years you tried all these different things and none of them "worked."    You had six years of failure, about 30-some odd failures but here's what we as human beings fail to realize.    Repetitive use of a limited ability will always produce an increased capacity.    What do I mean?    If I wanna get in shape and started doing push-ups, and I wanna do 30 push-ups, but I can only do five, here's what happens initially after I do five.    The next day I can only do three, right?    Because push-ups, in the beginning, don't make you stronger at first, they make you weaker because of fatigue.    So people think when they become fatigued from the activity that they wanna get good at, they think that means it's NOT working.    But you have to do it over and over again.    Repetitive use of a limited ability will ALWAYS produce an increased capacity.    Unless you do the activity repetitively, it cannot increase your capacity to do that thing.    Eventually, if you do five push-ups today, and three tomorrow, and then five the next day, and then three the next day, and five the next day... all of a sudden, you get down one time and then it’s 21.    Where did that come from?    Repetitive use of a limited ability will ALWAYS produce an increased capacity.    Over that year and a half when I was making presentations and nobody bought, what I didn't realize I was learning two very valuable lessons.    I was learning how to NOT work for money.    I was learning how to hone my message and how to adjust my approach and then go back and do it again.   And that's what I mean when I say I literally became the top seller.    Went from a year and a half no sales...to making a sale...to top salesperson.    “How did you do that?”    I ran out of all the ways that wouldn't work. The only thing I had left were ways that would work.   Steve: I totally get it.    It's kind of the same thing for me... after a while, I was like, "I don't know how else to be bad, or make it not produce cash.”   Myron: Exactly.   Steve: So just so everyone else can see, I've taken so many notes that I even turned the page…   ….now I'm going down this side of the page with notes!   I have so many notes and what's funny is that I've listened to you speak so many times...    Every time I hear you speak, more and more comes out!    I have a greater understanding of why I behave the way I do.    Not just, "How do I sell more?"    It's, "How do I actually behave better?"    It's really fascinating and I want to thank you for that.   Myron: Absolutely, my pleasure bro.   Steve: So you're gonna be teaching a lot of stuff at OfferMind and you're gonna come speak...   Myron: Yes.   Steve: And at the point where you're gonna come speak, people should have a great idea of what their offer actually is.    The core offer, what they should be doing.    Horse blinders on about everything else and just hyper-focused on that one core offer…which is what I'll be doing on the first day.    But you're gonna come in and teach them how to offer the offer.   Myron: How to offer the offer in a way that people expect it.    So many people make the mistake of thinking that the offer is their person.    What do I mean by that?    What they'll do is say, "Well you'll get so many hours of my time."    I say, "How many hours of your time?”    What I want less than hours of your time is for you to have hours of my time!   Steve: Right.   Myron: Okay? So they'll sell their person.    They'll sell their pieces, "Well, this has got five books, 17 videos and 47 audios."    Well, nobody cares about the pieces.   Steve: No, I don't want that.   Myron: Nobody cares about the pieces.    They'll sell their process.    It's fine to teach people the process after they've taken advantage of your offer, but don't sell them the process!    If you sell them the process then they're not gonna buy it.    I'm gonna teach you how to offer the offer...    Q: ...and so how do you offer the offer?    When you're selling to somebody you don’t sell them the process, you only sell them the payoff.    You don't sell them your person, you don't sell them the pieces, you don't sell them the process.    Q: What do you sell them?    You sell them the payoff and you use a concept that I call Emotional Cooperation.    After you use Emotional Cooperation… (and I'll teach you what that means when I get there - at OfferMind…)    ...then you use what I call Logical Justification.    When you combine Emotional Cooperation with Logical Justification, you become what I call a Psychological Artist.    You can hang pictures in people's minds for them to refer to that help them see your offer in a more favorable light. OFFERMIND???Steve: That is powerful stuff and I’m taking notes like CRAZY.    If anyone's watching or listening to this now, and they're like, "Will OfferMind be worth it?"    ...first of all, if you're NOT convinced by now… I don't know what to tell you!    What would you say to somebody who's like, "You know what, I don't know if I should show up to OfferMind?"   Myron: What does that mean?    Steve: Right.   Myron: No, no, I know what you mean.    I'm like, "I don't know if I should show up for OfferMind?"    Some of the greatest marketing and sales minds in the world alive today are gonna be there teaching you how to get BETTER at creating offers, and offering those offers…   ...if you don't know if you should be there…? Perhaps we should come get your family and take them to safety!?!   It's that kind of deal.  THE TWO THINGS...One of my old mentors, Charlie "Tremendous" Jones... I love that man and he was so amazing.    He changed my life in so many ways.   Steve: Oh, I didn't know he was! Oh, that's cool. Wow.   Myron: Oh yeah, I knew Charlie.   Steve: Oh, that's amazing.   Myron: Yeah, I knew Charlie.   Steve: Cool.   Myron: He lived in the same town as me. I used to go visit him.   Steve: That's amazing.   Myron: Like, I would go hang out with him.    Charlie used to say:    Your life would be the same 10 years from now as it is today, except for two things, the books you read and the people you meet.   When he said, "The people you meet", he is talking about the people you associate with.    I have found that NOTHING in this world ... in this life...changes your life for the better like going to live events.    Live events are my vibe.    I get to meet people and interact with people.    If I had never gone to Funnel Hacking Live, I wouldn't even know you and we wouldn't even be having this conversation right now.   Steve: No, definitely not.   Myron: When you were at Funnel Hacking Live in San Diego, 2016 and I was at Funnel Hacking Live 2016... I don't even know if I remember meeting you.    Do you remember meeting me?    Steve: No.   Myron: Probably not. No.   Steve: No, no.   Myron: Probably not, right?    We were both there, just as attendees.     And now you're having your event, and I'm coming to speak at your event!   You learn from me, I learn from you.    We make each other's lives better and we help each other's students, it's like...    ...does it get any better than that?!    Steve: I don't know?!   Myron: You will meet joint venture partners and they can open doors for you that you can't open for yourself just by going to live events in general...    But OfferMind! Like really?!!    I mean where will an assembly (other than at Funnel Hacking Live) of this level of marketing and sales genius be converged in ONE place at the same time other than OfferMind?    If you're not there ...where else would you be?!    Steve: I don't know? I've asked the same question.    I'm like, “I don't know why you wouldn't show up to this, it's pretty ridiculous…”   Myron: Your life will change.    I love what JR Ridinger used to say, he is a guy who is the president of a network marketing company I used to be a part of.    He said, "You can change your life in two days."    How long is OfferMind? Two days or three days? Two days?    Steve: Two days.   Myron:    You can change your life in two days. You can get more accomplished in two days than you get accomplished in a whole year by being smart enough to get yourself to that next event. Steve: There’s something about it...   Myron:    It collapses timeframes   It gives you a synergy    It gives you a level of focus that you can't get...that's diffused when you're out here doing your own thing in the workaday world.    When you come into a space where there are that many people focused on sales, focused on marketing, focused on offer creation, dude, it changes everything.   Steve: Yeah.   Myron: Yeah, I'm speaking at OfferMind.    But I'm not just going to OfferMind 'cause I'm speaking, I'd be going to OfferMind if I wasn't speaking.   Steve: Yeah.   Myron: Let's not get it twisted, ladies and gentleman.    Steve needs to go to events, I need to go to events, Russell needs to go to events.    The teacher who has stopped learning has lost his right to teach.   Steve: Okay, amen.    I think about like wings on a plane.    I tell everyone, if you're being coached by someone who's not also being coached, stop listening to them!   They're not practicing the very thing they're teaching you.   Myron: Absolutely.   Steve: Get away from them.     Myron: Absolutely.   Steve: Oh man.   Myron: Don't get stuck like Chuck in a pick-up truck.   Steve: Well hey thanks so much for being on here, thanks for being in Sales Funnel Radio.   I'm just incredibly excited to have you on.   Myron: Me too.   Steve: Guys, go to OfferMind.com and grab your ticket.      By the time while I'm saying this right now, we're pretty much out of VIP seating -  stuff is filling up very quickly.    Go get your ticket and we'll see you September 2nd and 3rd!   You’ll get to listen to Mr. Myron Golden teach you how to offer the offer that I'm gonna teach you how to build on day one.   Myron: May I borrow one of your words?    Steve: Yes.   Myron: BOOM!   Steve: BOOM!   BOOM!    If you're just starting out you're probably studying a lot. That's good. You're probably geeking out on all the strategies, right? That's also good.   But the hardest part is figuring out what the market wants to buy and how you should sell it to them, right?    That's what I struggled with for a while until I learned the formula.    So I created a special Mastermind called an OfferMind to get you on track with the right offer, and more importantly the right sales script to get it off the ground and sell it.    Wanna come?    There are small groups on purpose, so I can answer your direct questions in person for two straight days.    You can hold your spot by going to OfferMind.com.    Again, that's OfferMind.com.

There's a big difference between the two, so let's get into it.Hey traders, Andrew Mitchem here from The Forex Trading Coach with video on podcast number 311.Read the chartsAnd I want to talk about something that's very topical right now, especially when you think about the British pound. And I want to talk about the importance of why, to be a good trader and a successful trader, you should really trade what you see on your charts and not what you think should or might happen to a currency path. The Brexit exampleI'll give you a great example. So here we are today, 1st of March, 2019. Now I live in New Zealand, but on the other side of the world far away from me we're having that Brexit issue still dragging on. It just seems like it's been going on for months and months and months. And all I read on the news is Theresa May might be doing this, Corbyn might be doing that. Are they going to leave? Yes or no? Brexit, is it going to carry on with the vote that everybody wanted to leave, or the majority wanted to leave? Are they going to change things? What's happening with Ireland? Europe's getting involved. And to me, as an observer, it just seems like a complete and utter mess, and nobody seems to know what's happening. You kind of get that with I suppose a lot of politics around the world. But it seems a particularly big mess, and dragging on and on and on.So you think about that logically. What could or should that be doing to the British pound? Well, to me I'm thinking, well uncertainty. Nobody knows what's happening. Are they going to leave? Are they going to make big exit fees to leave Europe? The Pound should be falling, or not?The pound should be absolutely crashing. All these big businesses, and industries, and banks, they're all saying, "We're going to leave Britain if they leave Europe," or the Eurozone. And everybody should really be thinking the pound has to fall. It has to fall. It has to crash. Yet you go and look at your charts for this year, for the first two completed months of this year, and all we've seen is the pound against the US dollar has rise about 950 pips. Against the Australian dollar it's risen about 1100 pips. Against the Yen, it's risen about 1500 pips. And it's almost a straight line. It's just gone straight up when everything that you think should say it should be going straight down. It should be doing the opposite. The importance of trading what the charts show youSo we talked about this on my webinar last night with my class. And it's all about the importance of trading what you see on the charts, because if you think about this fundamentally or almost logically, you'd be just taking sell positions, or thinking you should be looking for sell positions all the time on the pound. Yet this year, so many weeks of this year so far, I've said to my class, "On a weekly bars, I'm looking for buy/trades on the pound/US, or pound/Yen, pound/Aussie, pound/Kiwi," because that's what we're seeing. And then you take that down to a slightly smaller timeframe and you look at each day, and many, many times we've been saying buy/trades on the British pound pairs because that's what we're seeing. And that's the important thing here. Look at what the charts are doing. It doesn't matter what you think, or what someone else thinks, or what CNN thinks, or what some fundamental trader thinks. It does not matter.

Let's talk about that and more right now.Hey, traders, Andrew Mitchem here, the Forex trading coach with video and podcast number 307.Now I've got a really interesting topic to discuss today. How much of your savings should you trade? Now it came back from an email here from a client of mine and we talked about this in quite some depth on my latest live Webinar with my clients that I hold each week and it was all about what should we do with our funds. And basically this guy said, "Should I put my savings and take money out of my bank account and put it into my trading account based on the fact that, we trade a strategy that works and based on the fact that we trade low risk per trade?" What should I do? And he said, "Well, basically, really is there any advantage one way or the other what I do?"The 2 different options for youSo the two scenarios would be one, I take out a funds and additional savings, put it into my Forex account, trade it really low risk. And probably make way more than the bank are ever going to pay me in a year, I'm probably going to make that in a month and that would be very fair pull. The other thing we discussed was, why don't you maybe look at putting half of that money that you would allocate to your Forex account into your account and half leave with the bank where sure, short may be earning very, very low interest rate but also, I suppose you could say it's secure or secure as you can get. So there's two different options. And if you took that second option, of course you could say, let's pick some numbers.Trading exampleLet's say I had $100,000 to try up at $50,000 and with my broker, 50,000 in the bank. And I'm assuming when I trade, I'm trading a 100,000, so I'm doubling up on my normal risk. So you've got a couple of options there and you can play around with the numbers as it suits you. This is a discussion – NOT financial adviceThe important things are this, there's two things really. Number one, I've got to say this is not financial advice. I'm not saying you should go and do this. This was purely a discussion that we had on the live Webinar and I just wanted to share it with you because I think it's something that a lot of people don't give you that normal everyday experience. And this is coming from experience. This is not a suggestions or advice, really important that point. The second point is that I'm assuming that if you're thinking, "Hey Andrew, which way do I go?" That you can actually tradeAnd that's another really important point. The guy that I was talking about, he can trade, he's been in all my course for awhile. He's doing really well, low risk, et cetera. He's not gambling, he's not doing silly things. So there's a couple of assumptions there. I'm assuming that you can trade profitably, consistently and you're taking low risk. So assuming that comes into play, and if you can't do that, then you need to come and see me first of all. But assuming you can then, which way you go?Which is the best choice for you?Well the choice of course is really yours, but just a few things to be aware of, here in New Zealand as a company that I've been using over the last year or so. It's called Halifax and Halifax in Australia had something happened back in around October, November,

Hello and welcome to today’s episode which is called “Becoming A Freelance Writer – A How-To Guide To Pitching Articles & Getting Them Published” I get a lot of emails from those of you who want to submit articles to publications or be featured on podcasts or other media in relation to your work, particularly while you are working on your book.So this week’s podcast is all about that.I’m going to go through some steps to take, what research is important to do, the strategy behind your pitch letter and tips that have worked for me and for people I have worked with and various campaigns I have worked on. I’ll tell you a little bit about my background and the experience I have with this kind of thing and then we’ll jump in.But before all of that I want to say a couple of things about the mindset you might choose to adopt in approach to all of this.It can be so uncomfortable for many of us, myself included, to put ourselves “out there” in the world. It might be a fear of being judged or rejected, a fear of being more visible in the world or any other number of things. Sometimes, it’s simply not very nice when you share someone that means to you with someone and they say no.So here’s what can help:If you believe in what you are doing and sharing, stand in the truth of that – regardless of the outcome you may get.Next, focus on what you can give, on how you can help. When you genuinely feel like this and this is your focus, other people can feel it too. A generous and giving approach feels good to all involves. The opposite is when you are needing a particular response, trying to get something. That doesn’t feel good for anyone. As much as possible, be unattached to the response. Adopt attitude of possibility and curiosity. Do your best and be interested in how you can learn, adapt, change, improve your pitching and your suggestions.Again… don’t get disheartened when you get rejections. Notice I said “when” not “if”, because rejections will happen. Years ago I did acting training and actors get a brutal amount of rejections from auditions, but my teachers used to say to me. Remember that if you go in an do the audition of your life, blow everyone away, but Hamlet is cast and he’s 5 foot 4. If you’re 6 foot tall, they’re probably not going to cast you as Juliet.Sometimes what you are offering is just not what people are looking for for what they are working on at that particular time, no matter how good it is. That’s ok.Be patient, be persistent and your work will pay off.So, 60 seconds about my background in all of this. My training is actually in Journalism. I’m a qualified Journalist. I’m working, through My Message Is Love, as a book editor and book coach, a copy coach and an occasional copywriter. I write copy for myself and others, and I’ve worked on PR campaigns for my own projects over the years and for other people and companies and bands too. So I’ve have lots of experience pitching and getting articles featured and multi-media placements and all of that and today I’m going to help you with all of that too.So here is my advice for you:1. Get clear in yourself and your own brand.Know what you are all about. Know what you stand for, know what you have to share with the world, know who your work is for, know how you can help, know the story behind why you came to do what you do, know what is unique about you and what you do, know what your “zone of genius” is (that’s a term from the book, “The Big Leap”, by Gay Hendricks) and it refers to the areas where you shine, skills that come naturally to you, but that you absolutely love to do.Having this clarity is fundamental. The clearer you are in relation to yourself and what you want to promote and share, the clearer other people will be in relation to you and the more likely they will be to want to connect with you.So before you begin any pitching, be really clear about how you want to present yourself to the world. You can answer these questions in relation to your art or project or business or brand – or whatever it is you want to promote: What do you do? Who is it for? Who is best helped through your work? What do you I stand for? What is the story behind how you came to do what you do? (Your “why?”)What is unique about you and what you do?What is your “zone of genius”, those areas where you shine, skills that come naturally to you, but that you absolutely love to do? That’s your starting point. Get really clear and make sure all of this rolls off your tongue in conversation and that it’s obvious that you are absolutely grounded in what you are doing. If you believe it, we’ll believe it.2. Prep work - make your list.Start by making a list of publications and podcasts you would like to be featured on. Don’t think at this stage, just put everything down on the page. When you’re making your list of where you’d like to be featured, include the specific name and title of the people who are in charge of the area where you want to be featured – for example the contact name for the overall editor of the health and wellness section or something like that.Don’t rule out smaller publications and podcasts. When you’re featured in smaller publications, you build experience and your body of work. When you’re featured in smaller podcasts, you get practice doing interviews and can really improve as an interviewee. Also, a lot of these kinds of things can come down to relationships and connections. As people, we love to refer people we know, so mutually beneficial relationships are always a good thing.3. The researchResearch the people and publications you are targeting really, really well. Dig into their past issues and episodes, check for most regularly featured themes, see if there is an overall style of writing that they seem to favor, be alert and analytical.Research the contacts for the area you want to be featured in. Research the past articles your contact has written so you have an insight into what types of articles they’re interested in or if they have causes or hobbies that they are passionate about that you can weave in to your suggestions for articles in some way.Know which publications will most likely be interested in what you have to offer and which ones won’t and make an educated choice about where is best for you to target.Publications have a strict adherence to a brand ethos and will be very careful about who they feature, so do your research and make it a no-brainer that they feature you! 4. Drafting your pitch emailThere are a few key rules here:- make it personal- make it beneficial to them and their audience- make it easy to contact you- make it concise- make it clear that they can trust youSo let’s go through those key rules one at a time.“Make it personal” means to make it absolutely clear to the person you are contacting that you know all about their publication, who it’s for, what they are looking for in terms of articles and so on.Get a direct contact. I can’t over-emphasize the difference this makes. You can research people on social media, especially on LinkedIn. If necessary, make a phone call to or email the publication or podcast or wherever to confirm you have the right contact.Make it clear to them that you have a real interest and understanding and have done your research.“Make it beneficial to them and their audience” means that when you are suggesting articles or features you can create you are doing it with them - with the publication - in mind.Introduce yourself to them briefly and share what you are about in one or two sentences (as we went through in point 1).Suggest two or three ideas only of how you feel you could contribute for them in a way that will be really of interest and benefit for their audience.Generally, publications like when you can come up with a slightly different slant on something they are talking about. You can say something like “I notice some of your biggest features are in relation to X and Y. I have an idea for Z that introduces a new perspective on this.”Another thing you’ll notice from features in magazines is where an article is based on an overall theme and three or four perspectives are introduced through the stories of people who work in different areas of that. For example, an article might have a theme of introducing the business of coaching and might feature perspectives and life stories from a book coach, a fitness coach, a mindset coach and a financial coach. That sort of thing. So you could team with 2 or 3 friends or colleagues to pitch something like that to a relevant publication.“Make it easy to contact you” means to be sure that wherever you are asking people to link to or wherever you are asking people to call WORKS. Perfectly. If you’re including a link to your website, make sure it’s in the best shape possible and that all links work. Make sure that your best content or most worthy stuff - basically what you want them to see first - is prominently displayed.“Make it concise” is a rule that shows you respect the person you are contacting, that you respect their time and that you are, again, thinking of them and getting to the point of what you have to offer. It’s so much more valuable when people want to find out about you and go doing their research on you because you have piqued their interest and curiosity than including paragraphs and paragraphs about yourself that they haven’t asked for.Everything I have mentioned, really, ties in to “make it clear that they can trust you”. When you show you are well researched, that you have your ducks in a row in relation to your own projects and that you are thinking of their audience and that all the links you send them to work… that inspires a level of trust in you and your ability that is crucial when you are pitching.5. Remember to follow upEmails get lost. Other projects take over. Deadlines take priority. Life happens. So don’t be afraid to politely follow up with someone about your email, ask if there is any additional information you could provide or if they would like you to call back on a day when they have time to talk.Every person is different, so make your best judgment about how receptive someone might be to a suggestion like this or whether it’s best to just move on.6. If you hear “No”. Please don’t be discouraged if people say no to you. It is going to happen. You can reframe this as an opportunity to learn, to take a fresh look at what you’ve submitted and make sure to identify improvements you can make, to recommit and to go again. If you have had direct contact with the person who said no, you can ask him/her if they might be able to help you by sharing why they passed at this time and ask if there is anything you could change for future submissions. The bottom line is to just keep going and improving until you get the result you are looking for. The possibilities are really endless.Ultimately, you want to make it a no-brainer for somebody to feature an article you suggest or feature you or collaborate with you.So there you go! I hope this has been really helpful to you and feel free to reach out to me if you have any further questions. You can pop over to the blog and post a question in the comments so everybody can learn from what you ask and we can continue the conversation there.Thank you for being here and for reading and I wish you lots of success with your pitching and please do let me know how you get on!Wishing you, as always, lots and lots of happy writing,Aoife************ Want to write a non-fiction or self help book? Let's talk about that and more right now.Hey Forex traders, it's Andrew Mitchem here. The Forex Trading Coach video and podcast number 273.The high paced action of the 1 and 5 minute chartsAnd I want to talk about the high paced action, where all the action happens in the one and five minute charts. Because that's what you need to trade if you want to be a scalper, don't you. And do you want to be a scalper? Well, that's what I get told by so many people. I had another email just this morning saying, "Hey Andrew. Please, can you teach me strategies so I can be a scalper?"I'm going to talk about the pros and cons of scalping. And by the end of this video and podcast, you can make your own decisions. But let's talk about it. What is it? It's trading five minute charts, maybe one minute charts. And it's looking for small, incremental gains all the time. Sounds real cool. Sounds amazing, because as Forex traders, we think that we need to be sat there watching the charts all the time, taking every little pip up and down. And that's unfortunately what so many new traders think.Look, I did the same, 15 years ago. All I wanted to do was to take little trades, watching every pip move up and down. The reality is much differentI can promise you the reality is that, on those shorter time frame charts, the probability of you using a really high quality trade set up on that pair that you're trading at that time that you happen to be looking at your charts is quite slim. And with hindsight, with the benefit of hindsight, I can go back through on five minute charts and go, "Oh look, that was a great set up here and there's a perfect set up there." But the chances of me being at the computer at that time, is quite slim. So, the reality is that most people then start to force trades to happen. Because I'm sat there ready at my computer. So I'm ready, so where's the trade? And that's what most people think. The reality is that the market will show the right set ups when the market is ready. Not when you're sat there ready. And that's quite a hard thing to understand for many new traders. So therefore, what you start to do is you take trades that are not really that great a set up.The spread becomes such a big part of your tradeThen the problem being is the spread becomes such a big part of your trade. So let's say as an example, you are wanting to take a 10 pip profit target. Now, I don't know who you pick 10 pips, but most people seem to think 10 pips is because it's an easy round number. The problem is, let's say you're trading British pounds, US dollar, and you've just paid two pips on the spread, the difference between the big and the [inaudible 00:02:32] cost of taking the trade. So now, your 10 pip profit target, is that 12 pips away? Because you've already paid two pips, so you're basically minus two. So to get to 10, you have to actually make 12. That's not quite so exciting. If you make 10 pips and you've just paid two as a spread, well haven't you just, and let's say hit the profit, haven't you just lost 20% of your total profit to the cost of the spread. The reverse of that is the stop loss. You want a 10 pip stop loss. So, does that mean that once you've taken your trade, you're now minus two, let's say effectively, that means you're only eight pips away from the stop loss. So,

Episode 163: What High Schools Do Colleges Visit?

USACollegeChat Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2018 17:39

Welcome back to our new series entitled Looking to Next Year.  Today, we want to look at a well-known college recruitment practice and its ramifications.  That practice is the visiting of high schools by college admissions staff.  Maybe our discussion today won’t come as a surprise to you; but, whether it does or doesn’t, it’s a sad commentary on the U.S. in 2018.    1. A New Study Just a few episodes ago, we quoted from an article in Inside Higher Ed by Scott Jaschik, and today we find ourselves doing that again.  This article is forebodingly titled “Where Colleges Recruit . . . and Where They Don’t."  Here is the story: [F]or many colleges, reaching out to students in person at high school events is a key part of the recruitment process. And even for the [elite colleges], this is an important part of outreach and regularly results in applications from those who might not have otherwise applied. But where do the [colleges] go to recruit? A new study being presented at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association suggests that these visits favor those who attend high schools where family income is high. And these high schools are likely to be whiter than the population as a whole. Two of the researchers--Ozan Jaquette, an assistant professor of education at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Karina Salazar, a doctoral candidate at the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Arizona--published a summary of their findings in The New York Times. (quoted from the article) So, let’s look at that opinion piece in The Times by Mr. Jaquette and Ms. Salazar.  They wrote about their findings, based on data from college visits--not any other kinds of student recruitment--made in 2017 by 150 colleges.  Here are some of those findings in their own words: The clearest finding from our study is that public high schools in more affluent neighborhoods receive more visits than those in less affluent areas. Only about a third of households across the country earn more than $100,000 annually, but nearly half of high schools receiving visits by private colleges and universities were in neighborhoods where average incomes were higher. Connecticut College visited neighborhoods with an average median household income of $121,578. Private colleges also disproportionately visited private high schools over public high schools. Andy Strickler, dean of admissions at Connecticut College, said the school targets high schools that have historically provided students, or other schools that have a similar profile. He said there was a good reason Connecticut College doesn’t always visit other areas: “There’s a trend for these students to stay closer to home for college.” (quoted from the opinion piece) I get that colleges understandably visit high schools that have sent students in the past or schools with demographic characteristics like those high schools.  I get that colleges need to recruit as cost-effectively as possible.  I get that kids in high schools in less affluent neighborhoods probably do “stay closer to home for college,” for better or worse.  But I still am a bit disappointed by all of it.  Nonetheless, let’s not single out Connecticut College.  There is a chart in the opinion piece that shows that plenty of other colleges do exactly the same thing--that is, visit high schools in neighborhoods with higher median incomes than high schools they don’t visit.  And, what’s worse, lots of those colleges are public universities.  Let’s look back at what Mr. Jaquette and Ms. Salazar write about that: While public research universities visited rich and poor neighborhoods nearly equally when recruiting in their home states, they visited the same affluent high schools targeted by private colleges when recruiting elsewhere. Most public colleges also visited far more high schools out of state than in-state. The median income of areas where the University of Pittsburgh recruited out of state, for example, was $114,000, compared with $63,000 for areas that were not visited. . . . The attention public universities lavish on wealthy out-of-state schools is a response to state policy. Over the past decade, many states have cut funding for higher education, forcing public universities to become more dependent on tuition revenue. Research shows that public universities responded by enrolling more out-of-state students, who often pay two to three times more than state residents. And of course, only well-off students can afford that. . . . In their out-of-state visits, our data also suggest, public universities were more likely to visit predominantly white public high schools than nonwhite schools with similar levels of academic achievement. For example, [in the Boston metropolitan area], the University of Colorado Boulder visited Dover-Sherborn Regional High School, which is 88 percent white and has about 154 students with proficient math scores, according to the federal Department of Education. But it did not visit Brockton High School, where just 21 percent of students are white but about 622 students have proficient math scores. “In order to be good stewards of our funding, we consistently recruit at schools that have historically given us applications,” said Colleen Newman, admissions director at Boulder. “Given our limited funding, we are unable to expand our traditional recruitment efforts to all regions and all high schools that have academically talented students.” (quoted from the opinion piece) Well, as loyal listeners know, I love recommending Boulder.  I think it is friendly to students from the East Coast and a great all-around university.  But I have to admit that I am not crazy about this recruitment strategy, though I understand the reasoning, of course.  Here are some more things I did not know, however.  I guess that I might have figured this out if I had thought about it, but I just never did.  I am wondering how much you have thought about this, parents.  Listen up: Colleges don’t treat recruitment lightly. It’s big business for colleges and the firms they hire. Most colleges identify prospects by purchasing lists of students and their backgrounds from the testing agencies College Board and ACT. They can also hire enrollment management consulting firms, which integrate data from the university with data on schools and communities. This helps them decide which schools should be visited and which should be targeted with emails and brochures. One consulting firm we spoke with even knows information about individual students such as their family income and net worth, and the value of their home. If colleges have all this data, why aren’t they better at targeting talented poor students and students of color? The most common explanation is that there aren’t enough of them applying (the so-called achievement gap). Another explanation we hear is that talented students don’t apply because they don’t have the right guidance (called “under-matching”). . . .   Our data [suggest] universities are determined to court wealthier students over others, and they expend substantial resources identifying and reaching them.  There are many students from poor communities who get excellent grades but end up going to a community college because no one bothers looking for them. If colleges are serious about increasing socioeconomic and racial diversity, they should look for merit everywhere, not just in wealthy, white communities. (quoted from the opinion piece)  It’s hard to disagree with that conclusion.  It’s especially hard to disagree with that conclusion for public universities, which have a mission to serve the taxpayers in their own states.  It’s concerning that public universities might be pricing themselves out of the market for the students who need them most in their home states--or even for the students who need them most from other states.  In putting together his article, Mr. Jaschik corresponded with Mr. Jaquette about his study.  Here is part of that correspondence:  Jaquette, via email, said there is a contradiction between colleges’ statements that they are doing everything possible to recruit low-income, disadvantaged students and the findings of the new study. “Scholarship on organizational behavior--on all types of organizations--finds that organizations publicly adopt goals demanded by the external environment,” he said. “But these public statements are poor indicators of actual organizational priorities. How they spend real resources is a better indicator.” (quoted in the article) In other words, colleges might say that they are looking hard to bring in more low-income students because it is the politically correct, or even morally correct, thing to say.  However, their actions (in this case, their spending habits) speak louder than words.                                                                          2. What Does This Mean for You So, what does this mean for you?  Possibly nothing, if you live in a relatively affluent neighborhood and your kid attends a high school with relatively affluent classmates.  The chances are good that college recruiters are going to come calling both now and in the fall. But if you don’t live in a relatively affluent neighborhood and your kid does not attend a high school with relatively affluent classmates, the chances are good that you are going to have to look harder to investigate colleges and make your kid known to them.  It might mean that you will need to visit colleges in order to get colleges to notice your kid (although I wish you didn’t have to until after your kid is accepted and you all are trying to make a final decision).  Oh, unless you live in one of the places identified in a 2012 study by Caroline M. Hoxby and Christopher Avery and cited by Mr. Jaschik in his article: [The study] found a tendency by colleges to recruit only at high schools where they will find a critical mass of talented low-income students and not the many others where academic achievement may be more rare. The high schools having success at placing students in competitive colleges are in large metropolitan areas (generally from 15 cities) and their students are “far from representative” of the academic talent among low-income students, the authors write.  So it’s not that colleges don’t recruit at low-income high schools, but they favor the magnet over the typical high school--even though there are many students with ability who do not attend magnet high schools. (quoted from the article) Indeed there are, and your kid might be one of them.  3. 100% Jodi: How to Create Milestones & Metrics to Measure Progress

Women Taking the Lead with Jodi Flynn

Happy New Year!! I hope it is going great for you thus far. There has been so much energy and excitement around 2018 and what’s possible I can’t help but feel this is going to be a great year. And it’s all within our power, right? I’ve also been feeling the momentum as I am running the Tolerations Detox Challenge. Ultimately, 112 people have registered and as of the day this episode is released we are on Day 8 of 10. And as I expected people are reporting feeling more empowered, more energy, momentum and enthusiasm for their goals, the coming year and life in general. Most of the activity has been playing out in the private Facebook group so if you a woman (sorry guys) and you have not joined us yet go to https://womentakingthelead.com/group to join the conversation and get support from other go-getting women just like you. Okay, in the last 100% Jodi episode that came out a couple weeks ago I shared a process to create goals that are worthy of you. Near the end of that episode I touched upon creating the milestones and metrics of each goal but having listened back on that episode I realized I didn’t give those topics their due. Since I am in the process of creating the milestones and metrics for the focus areas I’ve chosen it made perfect sense to continue this series on goal setting and in the next 100% Jodi episode I have the final piece that will bring all this together. Choose a Goal that Represents Success for You So for this to all make sense I’ll share with you what I’ve been doing with my focus areas. Since focus areas are not always specific you need to choose a goal that represents success in the focus areas you have chosen. I’ll cover the focus areas I chose in the original episode on creating goals that are worthy of you and then I’ll share what I chose as a specific goal and we can use these to get into metrics and milestones. Here are my focus areas and the goal I chose to indicate what success would look like for me in this area. 1. Build more strength and endurance. Goal: do 300 Spartan-regulation burpees (belly and chest to the ground) in one session. Separately, do an unassisted pull-up. 2. Be in a relationship. Goal: be in a committed (monogamous) romantic partnership with a man. 3. Increase profitability in my business. Goal: have a net income (earnings minus expenses) of $80,000 minimum. 4. Do WTL branded local paid workshops Goal: this morphed into doing a full-day event. 5. Outsource Goal: (contingent upon profitability goal) outsource social media content creation and email inbox management. Metrics to Gauge Progress Metrics are measurements like dials on the dashboard. They are indicators of how you’re doing, tracking your progress toward goals. An example of a metric would be how many burbees I can do in one workout session. They would let me gauge where I am on a given day or week and allow me to track my progress. My clothing size is technically a metric, however, since my focus area is to increase strength and endurance going down a clothing size is nice yet irrelevant. When determining the metrics for your goal you want to make sure they are relevant to the focus area and the goal you chose. Something that lets you know you’re making progress. Now, for my goal to do an unassisted pull-up as a sign of success in building strength, dropping a few pounds may be a part of my strategy to achieve that goal. Essentially, my thinking is if I am a little lighter it will be easier to do an unassisted pull-up. Some of you might be thinking that’s counter-intuitive because if I’m dropping weight I would be pulling less weight, thus undermining the amount of strength I can build. However, during the progression of a pull-up, from hanging from the bar to pulling your chin over the top of the bar, you transition through different muscles in your back, arms and shoulders. Being able to do the full progression of the pull-up is what I’m looking for and being a little lighter will make that easier. Now, making a progress is awesome but as you know we can stretch progress on endlessly and take forever to finally hit our goals. This is why milestones are so helpful. Milestones to Motivate Progress Milestones make a plan to achieve a goal specific and concrete. They are the mini-goals you are looking to hit on your way to achieving the bigger goal. Milestones can be dates, deadlines, tasks, and budgets. Metrics will allow you to track progress all you want but if you don't have something specific you are looking to achieve and a date by which you want to achieve it, you can find yourself feeling like you’re not getting much traction toward your goal. For my goal of doing 300 burbees in one workout session I’m going to start by seeing where I am now. I want to know how many burbees I can do before I just can’t do another burpee with good form. I haven’t done this yet but say I can do 50 burpees maintaining good form before I start to feel my back bowing as I come up from the ground while doing the push up. That means I have a gap of 250 burpees to hit my goal. I also need to know by when I want to achieve this goal. If my goal is to do this by December 31 my milestones are going to be different than if my intention is to achieve this goal by June 30. There’s no time like the present so I’m going to shoot for June 30. Based on the date I am releasing this episode and my guess that I can do 50 Spartan-regulation burpees in good form as of today that gives me a little less than 6 months to increase that number by 250. January 31 – 100 February 28 – 150 March 31 – 200 April 30 – 250 May 31 – 300 Yes, you see that correctly. I am shooting to achieve my goal ahead of schedule to give myself some wiggle room in the last month for the unexpected. Always put some cushion in your plans for the unexpected. This is where we high-achievers can get ourselves into trouble. We don’t account for the unexpected and they feel like complete failures if we didn’t achieve our goal according to the original plan. Remember to be a little bit flexible so you can pivot and tweak your plan if you need to. This is your goal and you get to decide how and when achieve it. Other things to consider when making your plan: What other activities do you need to consider that will support your goal (i.e. core strength)? What other resources or support do you need to achieve your goal (education, coaching, personal trainer, etc.)? When will you review your metrics and milestones (I will do a burpee workout 1x per week)? When are you going to execute your plan (time-block your calendar!)? If you don’t have metrics and milestones for your goals yet, no worries! Put some time on your calendar in the next week or two to get it done. This can be an eye-opening experience in that you may realize your goal was a bit unrealistic or you may realize it’s more easily achieved than you first thought. I’ll be continuing to build out the plan to achieve my goals and would love to hear where you are in creating your goals and forming the plan. We live in America where gyms are plenitful and fat to burn is also in a full abundance. A quick perusal of Instagram and you'll have no trouble finding fitness sites or before and after pictures of amazing success stories. These are inspirational and a welcome site for me, to see such an interest in health. Kind of... I am in a very fortunate position, in that I get to talk to patients every day about spinal health and health in general. Weight loss is a very common topic...very common. It has been for as long as I can remember. When I did a survey last month, the number one topic people wanted info on was....weight loss. Even from people who don't need to lose weight. So, lets switch hats. You be the doctor. Dr. You--"So, John Doe, what have you tried to lose weight?" John-- "Well, I started exercising, stopped snacking, and ate less in general." Dr. You--"Awesome John, keep up the good work." See... You know how to lose weight. This is like me telling a smoker, "Hey, cigarettes are going to kill you". They know that. They smoke any way. Here's what I want to avoid, just telling you the same old stuff, you know already. I want to delve into deeper issues. These are psychological issues, hormonal issues, and fundamental nutrition issues.  One of the big problems is that you don't just wake up chubby. You don't go from a high school athlete to an extra 200lbs, overnight.  People slowly drift of course. You don't fall of course, you drift, ever so slowly, you don't realize it. This whole series is going to be focused on the little things that push you of course. -being busy -added stress (I'll tell you my story later) -skipping breakfast -even tap water -etc... Real weight loss isn't about tricks, diet pills, special diets, exercise, or meals in a box from a MLM diet company. Rewind...I wish I could make that cool rewind noise in writing. You can lose weight with the above and most people do, but is that real? Yes, exercise is a sacred cow here in the land-o'-10,000 gyms. So, DO NOT misunderstand, exercise is good for your body, and can cause weight loss, but, it is often misused. Exercise for fitness and strength is awesome, but exercise for weightloss is inefficient. Being fit and being healthy are actually different. Exercise is very good at hiding underlying problems. We talked about it in the Chronic Pain article. In relationship to weight loss, two scenario's show up.  I hear these complaints weekly in the office. #1 If I don't exercise, I'll gain weight. #2 I exercise everyday and don't lose a pound. If you identify with either of those statements, then the month of September could be very good for you. Especially #1. People who identify with #2 already know something is off, they just haven't found it. The #1's are blessed that exercise still makes a difference. Here is something to think about. It is a very common statement for trainers / fitness guru's to make, that "abs are made in the kitchen". The full article is at SLCSAW.com
