This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Colleton County, South Carolina, to discuss the case of Cristina Pangalangan, a teenager girl living with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and scoliosis. She was non-verbal and depended on her mother, Rita, for all of her day to day needs. Although, Rita, who was a school teacher, had been on CPS's radar, nothing was ever done to remove Cristina from her care. But in August of 2019, tragedy stuck after Rita left her daughter in the back of her Volkswagen Jetta for 6 hours in the scorching Carolina heat in her boyfriend's driveway, while the two smoked meth and hooked up inside.  Support Our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/themiserymachine PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/themiserymachine Join Our Facebook Group: https://t.co/DeSZIIMgXs?amp=1 Instagram: miserymachinepodcast Twitter: misery_podcast Discord: https://discord.gg/kCCzjZM #themiserymachine #podcast #truecrime Source Materials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qBdYA7SIa8  https://people.com/cristina-pangalangan-hot-car-death-mother-boyfriend-abuse-11735335 https://www.kcrg.com/2023/09/03/couple-found-guilty-death-13-year-old-with-cerebral-palsy-left-car/ https://abcnews4.com/news/local/potential-settlement-reached-in-2019-colleton-county-hot-car-death-case-wciv-abc-news-4-cristina-pangalangan-rita-pangalangan-larry-king-south-carolina-department-of-social-services-walterboro-police-department https://www.spreaker.com/episode/disabled-daughter-left-in-hot-car-cristina-pangalangan-story-rita-pangalangan-interrogation--64665115 https://scsolicitor14.org/couple-who-left-quadriplegic-child-locked-in-car-guilty-in-childs-death/ https://www.live5news.com/2023/09/02/jury-finds-couple-guilty-death-13-year-old-colleton-county/ https://www.briceherndonfuneralhome.com/obituary/CristinaAnn-Pangalangan#tributewall https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/201925697/cristina_ann-pangalangan https://www.wikicelebs.com/cristina-pangalangan-wiki/ https://abcnews4.com/news/local/cristina-pangalangan-delayed-murder-trial-painful-for-loved-ones-of-walterboro-colleton-girl-left-to-die-in-hot-car-2019-wciv https://walterborolive.com/stories/cristina-ann-pangalangan,20757? https://www.islandpacket.com/news/local/crime/article284286478.html https://scdailygazette.com/briefs/difficult-conviction-after-13-year-old-girls-death-leads-to-bill-raising-age-limit-for-neglect/ https://www.live5news.com/2023/09/02/jury-finds-couple-guilty-death-13-year-old-colleton-county/ https://www.live5news.com/2019/08/07/authorities-identify-year-old-girl-who-died-after-being-left-car-2/ https://www.live5news.com/2023/08/29/testimony-begins-murder-trial-disabled-13-year-old-colleton-co/ https://www.yahoo.com/news/news/she-died-alone-hot-car-160000613.html https://www.walb.com/2019/08/12/woman-arrested-leaving-kids-car-week-after-mother-charged-with-murder-leaving-girl-car/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw1TKl6HNVY

Len to malo jednu chybu.

LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISON This is a podcast about trusting your Personal Guidance System. Guess what y'all? It's National Meditation Month… I get a little geeky about this because meditation has been such an important part of my life since the 90's. I started meditating because I was struggling and tired of the struggle. Back then there was no YouTube or podcasts or any of the really cool technology that we have now. I bought Shakti Gawain's CASSETTE TAPE called Creative Visualization which was a 30 minute program. I thought I was going to EXPLODE. Trying to sit and visualize for me was very stressful. You see, when someone walks me through a beautiful visualization practice, I don't see a thing, just the black behind my eyelids. Lol Meditation is such a personal practice. Some people see images, others are really impacted by sounds and other people, like me, are more connected to feelings and sensations when they practice. My meditation practice is one of the key steps I take daily as I walk that journey. My practice now is totally different than when I first started. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Michael Beckwith, is meditation is paying undistracted attention to reality, to the eternal, and to that which is real. It is learning to have dominion over your attention, so that you can place your attention where you want it to be. Science has now proven that what we focus on, our attention, and how we focus on it, our intention is what we manifest in our lives. If we focus on what we don't have, what we want, will not show up. I believe we all have what I call a PGS, Personal Guidance System. It is our own personal GPS, that navigates us around this earth. It is ALWAYS there even when we don't believe it is. It is there even if we don't listen to it. Early on in my meditation journey after I finished meditating, I believe it was in 1995/96, my PGS was very clear that I didn't need to go to work that day. There was nothing wrong with me, I was not sick. I had finished my 10 minutes a day practice and as I was walking around my apartment, I felt something in me that said… Don't go to work today. I remember it being very clear. Stay home. Guess what I did, I went to work. Just like the GPS will tell us something, and sometimes we ignore what the GPS says, the PGS will tell you something and it's up to you to listen and act. Just because we know how to get somewhere doesn't mean it is the best way to go at that moment. The mind chatter I had about not going to work that day went something like this. “ I can't just call into work sick, I'm not sick.” “ How can I call into work, or call out to work sick?”“ I don't have a personal emergency.” “ I need to go to work.” I went back-and-forth in my head with my mind about calling in because I was not sick. There were no wellness days back then. I think I had so much chatter because I had a wonderful boss who would have been fine with me taking the day. And again, I didn't trust my PGS. I was stalling and I was late leaving for work. I worked in downtown Atlanta and drove to the train station to go into the city. I turned left out of my apartment complex to drive to the station that was about five minutes closer than the usual station I went to. All that mind chatter had me flustered. I wanted to get on the train earlier, so I turned left. It was a split second decision to make that left turn. When I turned left a car came from around the curve and T-boned me. A little backstory. I was driving my 1990 silver Volkswagen Jetta, which I didn't care for. My whole life I had owned Japanese cars, they were very quiet. I wanted to try something different so I tried a German car. The truth is I DID NOT like that car, it was very loud. Look at that attention thing rearing its head. This was before I even knew about the power of our thoughts. Keep listening. THE WEEKLY DRIVER
#285, Hagerty’s 40-year celebration

THE WEEKLY DRIVER

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2024 29:56

Tarra Warnes and her husband once owned two Yugos. The sub-compact three-door hatchback and two-door convertible are often cited as the worst vehicles in history. The Yugo enthusiast family's idea was to use one vehicle to provide parts for its counterpart's restoration as a race car. The outcome isn't as relevant as the irony of Warnes telling the tale. She's vice president of creative strategy at Hagerty. It's the insurance company, marketplace, magazine, website publisher and automotive event organizer focusing on classic cars and their owners. Tarra is our guest this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I interview Warnes about Hagerty's advancement from a small company to its current status with more than 1,700 employees. The company began in 1984. Husband and wife Frank and Louise Hagerty couldn't find satisfactory insurance coverage for their wooden boats, so their new Michigan company did. Insurance for cars and other vehicles followed. The couple's son McKeel Hagerty became CEO in 2000. "We started as a niche insurance company; it was built by people who love cars and it was built for people who love cars," said Warnes, a 15-year employee. "We have grown now in 40 years to insure about 2.4 million vehicles and we are a community and hub for millions of classic car lovers." From its insurance beginnings, Hagerty's magazine, the company reports, has 815,000 print subscribers and a "robust" online presence with social media channels. Hagerty is also the "steward" for multiple automotive events. The brand's most recent offering is Marketplace where consumers can buy and sell vehicles. Live auctions are also held via Hagerty's relationship with Broad Arrow Auctions. The company also owns the Greenwich Concours d'Elégance, Concours d'Elegance of America and the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. It also established MotorsportReg.com and Hagerty Garage. The magazine's success has prompted substantially increased public brand awareness. The publication debuted nearly 25 years ago, but it was renamed Hagerty Drivers Club Magazine in 2020 and it's part of member benefits. It's also available as a stand-alone subscription. Published six times per year, the country's largest automotive publication has a lifestyle slant. It's largely absent of engine performance nuances, gear ratio analyses and other automotive complexities. Columnists include renowned collector and entertainer Jay Leno and Wayne Carini, the car restorer and television personality whose prominence arrived with the 2008 debut of the documentary series "Chasing Classic Cars." Warnes' responsibilities encompass marketing the Hagerty brand. The company's approach is far removed from heavy-handedness. "We are not trying to hit people over the head with direct marketing or product all the time," she said. "I think that really great brands can create really compelling content that people enjoy seeing and that bring a smile to their face, that puts a tear in their eyes and that sort of connects with them on an emotional level." Recent article headlines provide ideal examples: "Tattoo artist's '56 Bel Air Sport Sedan is a rolling marquee," "This restored 1969 Ford Torino is staying in the family," and "Blind at 58, one man chose to keep loving life—and his classic Plymouth." Hagerty's year-long anniversary campaign includes a television commercial, broadcast on various networks, titled "Keepers of the Flame." It's "to signal to the automotive world that Hagerty has 'plenty left in the tank' for the next 40 years." What vehicles qualify is subjective. The Warnes sold their Yugos when they moved and downsized their garage space. They no longer own a classic, but may have a future purchase. Tarra Warnes drives a red Volkswagen Jetta turbo diesel wagon. But she desires a car from her childhood, a station wagon from the mid-1980s or a minivan from the early 1990s.

Setting it apart from all its non-luxury in-class competitors is merely the fact that it's a German car affordable to any American.  Jetta's are immediately recognizable to most drivers, especially 30 years and older.  Because it's been Volkswagen's top seller for more than four decades. ⇒ iDriveSoCal's VW Dealer Is Ontario Volkswagen New For 2024 Volkswagen Jetta Being refreshed in 2022 the 2024 Volkswagen Jetta continues its Euro-stylish-ness.  All Jetta's are now receiving the German carmakers IQ.Drive driver assistance feature suite standard.  Base-model S trims receive an eco-leather trimmed steering wheel plus a gearshift knob.  Also rain-sensing wiper technology.  Additionally, Sport-trimmed Jetta's now receive heated front seats. 158 hp & 184 lb-ft of torque [powerpress channel="podcast" post_type="podcast"] Trims And Prices - 2024 VW Jetta Volkswagen likes to group Jetta and its more sporty brethren Jetta GLI in its literature.  However here at iDSC, we prefer to separate the vehicles.  Because there are several differences that we feel are significant enough to warrant the separation. So throughout this article, we're just talking about the Jetta.  And for 2024 Volkswagen offers it in 4 trim configurations. 2024 VW Jetta Trims & Starting MSRPs: S $21,435 Sport $22,585 SE $24,875 SEL $28,825 Engine, Transmissions & MPG For 2024 VW's Jetta keeps its 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.  Intercooled and with 16 valves it's delivering 158 horsepower with 184 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is the only way Jetta comes.  But you have your choice of manual or automatic transmission.  Which, for many drivers, just the idea of three-pedal driving delivers a sense of enjoyment.  Even if you decide to go with the automatic trans. The manual transmission option is a 6-speed.  While the more commonly accessed automatic trans is providing eight gears. Either way, Jetta delivers solid fuel economy.  Depending on your trim and transmission configuration.  Jetta is rated, at the high end, of using 29 miles per gallon in the city.  (That's with a manual transmission, automatic actually rates better at 30 mpg.)  Then in the best scenario, Jetta sips as little as 41 mpg on the highway.  Combined it's between 33 and 34 mpg. 2024 Volkswagen Jetta - What's It Look Like? The 2024 Volkswagen Jetta appears bigger than its compact sedan designation.  And being refreshed in model year 2022 Jetta hasn't changed much from the past two model years.  Jetta enjoys a comfortably athletic stance with sleek lines. Since Jetta was the top-selling Volkswagen for more than forty years.  It's quintessentially VW to almost anyone 30 years or older. Both the S and Sport trims deliver cloth seating surfaces.  While the SE trim gives you leatherette seating surfaces. For real leather seating surfaces you need to bump up to the top-trimmed SEL model.  But that also gives you standard ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel.  Plus 10-color ambient lighting.  Heated front seats come with the SE and SEL.  But only the SEL gives you heated back seats. Accent stitching on the gearshift knob and steering wheel is included with the SE and SEL trims.  But only the top-trim SEL additionally comes with interior accent stitching that's not available on lower trim levels. A six-way power seat comes with the SE while the SEL gets an 8-way power seat with memory. Interior dimensions: Headroom 38.5/37.2 Shoulder room 55.9/54.0 Hip room 53.0/51.4

NYC's Andrew Devlin takes a break from his usual dance floor facilitation to offer us a poolside soundtrack inspired by a recent stay at The Standard hotel in Miami Beach. Q. Where do things currently sit on @thelevelparty front, and what other projects have you been busily chipping away at? A. What's that line? “We've been coming to the same party for 12 years now, and in no way is that depressing.” I think we're nearing 10 now. In any case, the party feels like it's in a really good place. After doing it more or less solo for a minute, I brought 5 residents on board who I love dearly–Alien D, KFeelz, Nigelthreetimes, No Sir, and Yibing. Everyone has so much range and energy, it's been special getting the group together. I'm really excited for our Glen Falls House weekender upstate in July (14-16). We get to take over this little hotel in the woods for a weekend and stretch out. It's a dream. Big shoutout Josh Houtkin at Good Room for all his work making that a reality. Past that, we've got some shows at our usual spots, Le Bain and Good Room, as well as a couple of day parties at Public Records' new Nursery and a July 4 BBQ at Mansions. Would really like to bring the group of us to some other cities soon. I dream about heading back to New Orleans, doing Level Miami, Level Mexico City, Ibiza, etc…Anyone reading this wants to get in touch, let's build ;) Personally, I run a small sound company here in NYC, so I'm trying to grow that business and maintain my sanity. I'd like to get back into making music soon, even just a few cheeky edits. Start a podcast (I know, I know). And eventually open up a venue. A pub of sorts with good food and music. Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when putting the mix together? There is, in fact, a pretty specific one. This mix is dedicated to the pool at the Standard in Miami. I went in January for the first time and recorded this when I got home. The vibe there is so strong. You're sitting outside, eating the best caprese salad of your life, there's a 2' iguana crawling on a palm tree, you've got a green juice or a margarita in one hand. Everyone is having a good time and partying in this really respectful way. They're just sipping on a cocktail or walking to the hot tub or making out in the pool. I thought a lot of that had to do with the soundsystem and the music programming–there are speakers everywhere (including underwater) playing at like 6/10 volume. The music is on a sort of soulful r&b/ balearic tip. I was on Shazam all weekend. So this mix is a dedication to that–if someone gave me 80 minutes to DJ the Standard Miami pool, this is what I would play. Q. Are there any records in the mix that are particularly close to your heart, or old favourites that you've been keeping up your sleeve for the right moment? A. Definitely. To run through a couple… ”Wall Street” I discovered reading Dub by Michael Veal. Great book for anyone interested in DJ'ing, soundsystems, production, etc. I got really into Jackie Mittoo reading that, and have been playing that track since. The Lauryn Hill track, “Sweetest Thing” I heard in a coffee shop in Amsterdam in 2009, forgot about completely, then recently re-discovered. “Don't Break my Heart” is a big song for my wife and me. We both stumbled on it when we started dating at the beginning of 2020. We almost chose it as our first dance at the wedding, but thought the lyrics were a little dark. Anyway, big tune at the house. And the last track, the Mike Huckaby remix, is close to my heart. I was lucky enough to meet Mike a few years ago and gave him a ride to his hotel after a gig. He had just played for 3 hours and all he wanted to talk about was my Volkswagen Jetta. He was really such a sweet, warm guy, and this track always makes me think of him. R.I.P. Thanks so much for having me on this! Been a huge fan of MDC for a long time, and the radio shows and mix specials got me through lockdown over here. Means a lot to be a part of it. Much love.

Supreme court rules capping damages did not violate sexual assault victim's rights

The Supreme Court of Georgia announced it ruled that state law capping punitive damages at $250,000 did not violate the constitutional rights of a Cobb County sexual assault victim. The case stems from an April 2012 sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl while she was living at the Devereux Foundation's behavioral health treatment facility in Kennesaw. The girl filed a civil lawsuit against Devereux. In this case, she is represented by the executor of her estate. The assault was perpetrated by a Devereux employee, Jimmy Anthony Singleterry, who was criminally prosecuted and pleaded guilty to several charges, the MDJ previously reported. Singleterry was sentenced in October 2013 to 20 years, 12 to be served in prison. In 2019, a Cobb jury returned a verdict for $10 million in compensatory damages, finding both Devereux and Singleterry at fault, and $50 million in punitive damages against Devereux. But a Cobb trial court later capped the punitive damages at $250,000, a standard set by state law. The plaintiff appealed, Devereux cross-appealed, and last October, the high court heard arguments in the case. Lawyers for the estate argued the cap violates the plaintiff's constitutional right to a trial by jury in this case. The court disagreed in a majority opinion authored by Justice Sarah Hawkins Warren. But the court also ruled against Devereux's arguments, deciding that there was evidence to support awarding punitive damages and attorney fees to the estate. Police arrested a suspect in connection with the Sunday morning crash which injured two pedestrian construction workers in Marietta. The suspect has been charged with DUI, hit and run and several other charges. Malik Branch is accused by police of hitting the two workers while driving drunk on Roswell Road under the Interstate 75 overpass, then fleeing the scene on foot before first responders arrived. According to police, the crash occurred around 1:40 a.m. Sunday. Workers Jimmy Varraza and Oscar Aguilar were struck while placing a message board on the roadway for a lane closure. Branch, of Dallas, was driving a gray 2019 Volkswagen Jetta eastbound when he struck the workers, per police. The workers were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. While Aguilar is recovering and has been released from the hospital, Varraza remains in critical condition, police said Wednesday. Marietta Police arrested Branch Tuesday night and booked him into the Cobb County jail, where he remains. He is not eligible for bond. According to an arrest warrant, police obtained video surveillance footage of Branch leaving Sage Restaurant and Lounge shortly before the crash, “stumbling and almost falling in the parking lot with a beer bottle in his hand.” The restaurant on Roswell Street is less than half a mile from the crash site. The car Branch drove had two bald front tires, two rear tires inflated to double the recommended tire pressure, and a rear tire which was the wrong size, according to the warrant. Atlanta United 2 announced Wednesday that it had signed midfielder Alan Carleton, a Powder Springs native, to an MLS Next Pro contract through the 2024 season. The 17-year-old Carleton was a member of the first Atlanta United Academy team to take the field in 2016 at the Generation Adidas Cup. He has continued to progress through the academy ranks and made his professional debut for Atlanta United 2 on April 3, 2022, in a 2-1 win at Hartford. His first start came Aug. 10, 2022 at New York Red Bulls II. Carleton finished his first professional season with 12 appearances, including two starts, and 276 total minutes played. Carleton's older brother, Andrew, was Atlanta United's first homegrown signing in 2016 and went on to play 10 games for the MLS club and 29 games for Atlanta United 2 from 2017-19. He is now part of the Las Vegas Lights of the USL Championship league. Atlanta United 2, marking its first season with the MLS Next Pro circuit after previously being part of USL Championship, will open the season March 26, hosting New England Revolution II at Kennesaw State's Fifth Third Bank Stadium.  It was all relief for Commissioner JoAnn Birrell this week as she and her peers on the Cobb Board of Commissioners approved more than $9 million in funding for a rebuild of Gritters Library in east Cobb. The project will take it from an aging 7,000-square-foot building to a new 14,000-square-foot facility that will also house community and workforce resource centers. Major features of the new building will include reading and study rooms, expanding an existing multipurpose room, creating an outdoor programming space, and consolidating services into a one-stop service desk. Birrell said the rebuild is needed because the current one is too small for the surrounding community, not to mention outdated: Gritters was built in 1972 and opened November 19, 1973. According to the county, the current facility has dealt with mold and mildew problems as well as plumbing issues, and it has become increasingly challenging for the county to maintain. The library will be closed during construction, at which time patrons will be directed to other county libraries. Cobb's mobile book service will also assist in serving the surrounding community. Travis Stalcup, the country's property management director, said he expects construction to start sometime this spring or early summer and last around 14 months, though that schedule is subject to change. Marietta High School and IT company Apto Solutions are teaming up to provide exciting job training for students with disabilities. The newly converted lab space welcomed students, teachers, Board of Education members and community members to a ribbon cutting in February. With input from industry experts, this cutting-edge lab equips students with skills they wouldn't normally get in the classroom. The Apto/MPower Learning program was designed to help students transition into post-secondary life after high school and provide them with soft skills they need for lifelong employment. The six students currently enrolled learn how to safely and effectively dismantle and dispose of electronic devices such as laptops, servers and cell phones. Students break apart and sort device components and send them back to Apto for recycling. In addition to Apto Solutions, MCS also collaborated with Blue Star Recyclers and Parallel International Consulting's Founder, Meaghan Timko to create the program. With municipal elections in Mableton less than a week away, one of the four services the city will offer is gaining more scrutiny than the others: trash. That's trash hauling, to be more specific, and rumors are swirling that a set of pro-Mableton cityhood advocates are pushing for a one-hauler-for-all system. While it is disputed what exactly those advocates said in a recent meeting with trash haulers, residents have begun to question how sanitation will look in Mableton. Since one of the four candidates for mayor will be leading the city's policy, the MDJ polled the candidates on their proposals. Aaron Carman, who has been endorsed by proponents of de-annexation from Mableton, said that from the start, he did not want sanitation to be one of the four services the city offered, a stance he maintains. Currently, the county allows residents to negotiate with individual haulers on their trash service. Carman said he has heard from residents that they are happy with their haulers. Michael Murphy, a former aide to the late Cobb Chairman Mike Boyce who is also in the race for mayor, said he is focused on making Mableton more sustainable in regard to trash service. He wants to divert the trash thrown out by Mableton residents away from landfills, though he supports letting residents continue to choose their own trash haulers. In an email to the Journal, candidate LaTonia Long, a public policy manager stated she thinks Mableton should enter into a contract with Cobb County to extend the current services and management options to Mableton residents for at least one year. Mayoral candidate Michael Owens, former chair of the Cobb Democratic Party, speaking at a meet and greet last week, offered his vision on trash collection in Mableton. It involves the city requesting proposals from small trash haulers for offering their services to each of the city's six districts, an idea he said would not risk putting smaller haulers out of business. Mableton elections will be held on Tuesday. Murphy said he is happy for all the Georgia players, especially quarterback Stetson Bennett.Despite a controversial ban on tailgating around SoFi stadium, including no pop-up tents or grills, Murphy said fans had a drink or two at their cars before entering the stadium. He added that, despite heavy rain, there were still some fans tossing a football in the parking lot prior to kickoff. In honor of the University of Georgia's historic feat, Times-Journal, Inc. is publishing a commemorative championship edition with a special poster page, stories, highlights and photos from the national title game defeat of TCU. The edition was in Tuesday's home-delivered MDJ and will be available for purchase for $3 at the MDJ office, at 47 Waddell Street. The first Board of Commissioners meeting of 2023 was derailed Tuesday as the board's two Republicans refused to vote on county business amid Cobb's ongoing redistricting controversy, and were asked to leave the dais by Democratic Chairwoman Lisa Cupid. Republican Commissioners JoAnn Birrell and Keli Gambrill said they would not cast votes while the county remains at odds with the state government, and embroiled in a constitutional dispute, over its effort to redistrict itself via its home rule powers. The two Republicans were ultimately asked to leave the dais by Cupid, who cited county rules requiring commissioners vote on every item unless they are faced with a conflict of interest. The duo would spend the remainder of the meeting seated in back of the room while the board's three Democrats carried on with voting. Tuesday's was the first meeting since two conflicting county commission district maps took effect on January 1. The first, passed by Republicans in the General Assembly last year and signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, sparked controversy as it drew Democratic Commissioner Jerica Richardson out of her seat midway through her four-year term. The second is a map the Democratic commissioners adopted in October in an untested assertion of its home rule powers, which the county says allows it to amend state laws including redistricting. That map would keep Richardson safely within the boundaries of District 2, which she currently represents. The county's map has been subject to a legal challenge from east Cobb activist Larry Savage, but Superior Court Judge Ann Harris has yet to issue a ruling. A man was seriously injured in a crash on I-75 early Wednesday morning after his motorcycle collided with a parked car, Marietta police said. Brian Vaughn, 36, of Chatsworth, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle in the northbound lanes near Delk Road when he struck a parked and unoccupied Volkswagen Jetta, per Officer Chuck McPhilamy. The crash occurred around 12:40 a.m.; police said they do not know why the collision occurred. Vaughn was ejected from the motorcycle and was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries, according to a news release. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Investigator Gunkle. State Rep. David Wilkerson, D-Powder Springs, will host a town hall this month on the efforts to de-annex portions of Mableton from the newly created city. The town hall will be held at the Cobb police training center at 2435 East-West Connector, starting at 6 p.m. on January 18. Wilkerson has been a vocal critic of Mableton cityhood and told the MDJ last week he would file legislation this year to remove portions of the city from its boundaries. The areas in question are in the city's northern precincts, where a majority of residents voted against cityhood. Across the whole of the proposed city, 53% of residents voted "yes" for cityhood in the November referendum. Elections for mayor and City Council are set for March 21. A news release advises that residents "who now reside within the corporate limits of Mableton have the option of requesting de-annexation and, if approved, returning to unincorporated status." Interested residents can learn more at deannexfrommableton.org. Lassiter's wrestling team won its first region duals title since 2018 on Saturday, beating Pope 42-39 in the Region 7 6A finals. It went down to the final matchup. After a first-round bye and a 60-22 win over tournament host Johns Creek, the Trojans edged out the Greyhounds behind a crucial pin by Carter Brickley in the 126-pound weight class. Brothers Casey and Riley McElligott were among the standouts for the Lassiter on Saturday. Casey, a junior, and Riley, a freshman, both nailed down important wins, along with a key pin from Carter Brickley. Jacobee Connell also energized the team, beating a rival and adding key points to a one-match decision. Lassiter was a top-six team in the state last season and the final team remaining from Cobb County in the Class AAAAAAA tournament. Despite graduating more than 20 wrestlers over the last three years, the Trojans have remained relevant and continued that trend with just five upperclassmen on the 2022-23 roster. On Saturday, Lassiter will host Morrow in the opening round of the Class 6A state prelims, and if it wins, would match up with the winner between River Ridge and Tift County. The champion of that bracket will head to Gainesville for the state tournament January 21. Atlanta cellist-songwriter Okorie “OkCello” Johnson and Georgia Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Conductor Timothy Verville will present the world premiere of a new work for cello and orchestra on February 25. The piece, titled “Liminal: an Atlanta Concerto” was co-written by Johnson and Verville and will be first performed at the Georgia Symphony Orchestra's “You Shall Hear…” performances celebrating the works of black composers. The music offers a unique perspective on Johnson's creative life here in Atlanta, and his exploration of what contemporary African Diasporic stories and song forms sound like through an orchestra. This three-movement composition is comprised of music originally written by Johnson for solo looping cello which has been adapted for solo cello and orchestra. Two of the utilized pieces within the work are the results of previous commissions from Atlanta Organizations: the National Black Arts Festival and Freedom Park Conservancy. Participants can hear these pieces on February 25 at 8 p.m. and February 26 at 3 p.m. at the Marietta Performing Arts Center. Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKdeO4IodggpSLyhWVdcWKw   Episode Details: Sarah Stempky-Kime, an experienced trial lawyer and managing attorney at Christensen Law in Michigan, discusses how she secured justice for Vaylma Dorado, a woman who suffered a TBI and sustained other serious injuries after she was rear-ended by a cement truck. On September 17, 2010, Vaylma sat in her Volkswagen Jetta waiting to make a turn when she saw a cement truck in her rearview mirror that showed no signs of stopping. The 66,000-lb cement truck –– driven by a distracted company employee –– crashed into the back-end of Vaylma's car and propelled her vehicle into a utility pole. As a result, Vaylma endured three spinal fusion back surgeries, hip fusion surgery and shoulder surgery, making her unable to live independently or remain employed. On today's episode, hear how Sarah Stempky-Kime focused on McCoig Concrete Company and the driver's admitted liability at trial and kept the jury's attention on the extent of Vaylma's injuries, while countering defendants' attempts to minimize those injuries. On June 11, 2014, a Wayne County, Michigan jury awarded Vaylma $17,800,000 in damages, marking the second-largest verdict or settlement in a Michigan courtroom in 2014.  Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents   Guest Bio: Sarah Stempky-Kime Sarah is the managing attorney at Christensen Law, where she recently celebrated her 12th anniversary. Integral to the successful operations of the firm, Sarah has been working alongside founder David Christensen since 2009, partnering on major trials protecting the rights of accident victims. Sarah is responsive and compassionate when it comes to her clients, and a strong litigator with a history of successful verdicts won in challenging court situations. Sarah has far more trial experience than her years in practice would suggest, making her stand out as one of the state's best young trial attorneys. “I've learned that everyone deserves the same attention. People who have been hurt are going through the extreme stress of trying to heal while dealing with the added stress of being in a lawsuit. They've been wronged, and they need someone to represent their interests. That's where I come in.” A native of Cheboygan, Michigan, Sarah graduated from Alma College in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Her psychological background makes her an effective communicator and helps her empathize with clients who are recovering after traumatic automobile accidents. Sarah attended Michigan State University College of Law, graduating in 2010 with a certificate in Trial Practice from the Trial Practice Institute. While in law school, Sarah demonstrated remarkable advocacy skills, and reached the finals in several national Mock Trial Competitions. She also captained the Arbitration Team, which won the regional competition in Omaha in 2009. Her success in law school has continued in the courtroom. She has won several multiple million-dollar trials and settlements, improving her clients' lives after auto accidents impacted their ability to work or live independently. In 2014, Michigan Lawyers Weekly named one of Sarah's victories second-highest on its list of 2014 Million Dollar Verdicts. Her skills as an orator and success at trial have continued to attract statewide recognition and accolades and awards. She sits on the executive board for the Michigan Association for Justice , a top advocacy organization committed to making Michigan's justice system fair, effective, and accessible to all the state's residents, and is a regular presenter for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Sarah and her family reside in Birmingham, where they are active members of the community, participating in annual neighborhood cleanups around Detroit and various charitable outreach programs. She also provides guidance for other parents experiencing the challenges of childhood brain injury and epilepsy, and supports the Brain Recovery Project and Detroit Horsepower. Jetta Review - Real Test-Driver From Loma Linda, California Bert Chancellor from Loma Linda, California test-drove the all-new Volkswagen Jetta. He was among a handful of lucky drivers who attended Ontario Volkswagen's Jetta Launch party. "I love the experience that it's truly centered towards the driver." And Bert's family has owned many Jettas.  Plus other VW's too.  Even so, Bert had quite a bit of praise for the all-new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. Continue reading or click play below to listen to the podcast versions of this Jetta review from a real Southern California commuter in Loma Linda. ***Transcript*** Recorded @ Ontario Volkswagen More Real-Driver Jetta Reviews: Riverside Driver Family from Corona Inland Empire Driver Riverside VW Enthusiast Jetta Review From Loma Linda, CA Bert: We've owned several Jettas, I love the experience that it's truly centered towards the driver. And it's obvious when you set down in the car that it's about the experience of the driver. I love the customized, having it to the fob, and you move in and out from the seats, etc, you can set there and use that. I love the fact that they went a little bigger with the car. "...first of all, I'm really jealous. I liked the test drive." Tom: Welcome to iDriveSoCal, the podcast all about mobility from the automotive capital of the United States, Southern California. Tom Smith here and we are at the Jetta launch party, the 2019 Jetta launch party at Ontario Volkswagen in the Los Angeles suburb of Ontario, California. I am joined by Bert from Loma Linda who just got back from a test drive of the 2019 Jetta. Bert, what'd you think? Bert: Well, first of all, I'm really jealous. I liked the test drive. Driver-Focused Jetta Cockpit It's a wonderful car. We've owned several Jettas, I also own an eGolf, and just really enjoyed the drive. More than anything, I loved how the experience of driving the car was centered towards the driver. Center Stack Angled Toward the Driver From the dash, from the controls, from the way even the center console sort of leaned in, that was my favorite thing about it. "I love the fact that they went a little bigger with the car." Tom: Feels like the cockpit kinda feeling to it. Bert: It did, it did. We had a 2014 Jetta, we have a 2016 Jetta, and I have a 2017 eGolf. And the controls, the, in the eGolf, they haven't really brought, until this Jetta model, that technology and that look and feel back down to the Jetta line. Wonderful. Jetta's Digital Cockpit Review I love the interaction, the UI's great, and I love the customized way you can tie everything back to a key fob. It's very helpful. Tom: So the key fob, I agree with you 100%. It's a lot of car for the money. And I was just chatting with your wife.  I mentioned that I have a six-month-old son.  And you guys have a nine-month-old daughter. But, getting in and out of the vehicle, the way me and my wife experience, I'm sure it's the same with you... Multi-Profile Digital Cockpit It's like, 'okay, I've gotta readjust this, readjust that, whatever.' So the key fob thing, where we have customization for both, is fantastic. I love that. It's a lot of car for the money. Bert: It is a lot of car. Tom: One of the things that we do on iDriveSoCal when we review vehicles is top three things. And it sounds like you're a big enough car guy that you might be able to pull off the top three things just off the top of your head here. What are your top three things for the 2019 Jetta? Bert From Loma Linda's Jetta Review - Top-3 Bert: Yeah, top three things... Driver-Focused Cockpit: I love the experience that it's truly centered towards the driver. And it's obvious when you set down in the car that it's about the experience of the driver. That's the first thing. Multi-Driver Profiles: The second thing I love, again, the customized, having it to the fob,

2018 Volkswagen Jetta GLI The 2018 Jetta GLI is the enthusiast's compact car from Volkswagen. Great European styling with sport acceleration, braking, and handling plus fuel efficiency on top of it all. While the all-new 2019 Jetta's get ready to make their debut, if you're looking for the sport version, this very well may be the car for you. iDriveSoCal's Professor, Clinton Quan, picked one up from our friends at Ontario Volkswagen for a complete analysis – hear it all in this iDSC Podcast. 2018 Volkswagen Jetta GLI   ***Transcript*** Recorded in Los Angeles, CA 2018 Volkswagen Jetta GLI - Compact Sports Sedan Clinton: This car is for someone who wants a compact car but wants something that's sportier, more fun to drive than your typical compact car. So if you're looking for something that's also fuel-efficient but that's fun to drive on the highway and on mountain roads, and you like going on scenic drives, this is the car for you. "This car is for someone who wants a compact car but wants something that's sportier, more fun to drive than your typical compact car." I think the three-spoke steering wheel is my favorite feature of the car. Love the large, sporty gauges. It handles really well. And the power, 210 horsepower 207 pound-feet of torque. Tom: Welcome to iDriveSoCal, the podcast all about mobility from the automotive capital of the United States--Southern California. I'm Tom Smith. And joining me for another vehicle review is our good friend "the Professor" Clinton Quan. Say hello, Clinton. Clinton: Hi, Tom; it's great to be back for another automotive review.   2018 VW Jetta Courtesy of Ontario VW Tom: Always happy to have you, my friend. Today we are reviewing our first Volkswagen from our newest dealer partner, our good friends out at Ontario Volkswagen. And, Clinton is going to review the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta but the sporty version, which is the GLI. Before I throw it over to you, Clinton, I want to give a shout out to Earl Reed, who is the general manager out at Ontario Volkswagen. Thank you for coming on board. And Randy Halcomb, who is marketing guru, thank you for coming on board. Clinton, tell us about the 2018 VW Jetta GLI! 2018 Volkswagen Jetta Trim Levels & Prices Clinton: I test drove the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta GLI. The Jetta is Volkswagen's compact sedan. The GLI is the sport version of the Jetta. And there are six trims in the Jetta family and three engines. "...features a 2.0-liter engine turbocharge inline 4 and that produces 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.  That starts at about $30,000." The base Jetta is the S which starts at about $19,000. Then you have the Wolfsburg edition at about $20,000, the SE at $21,000.  And, all three of those trims feature a 1.4-liter inline 4-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 150 horsepower, 184 pound-feet of torque. Then you move up to the SE Sport which is about $23,000 dollars, and then the SEL which starts at about $26,000. Those two trims feature a 1.8-liter inline 4 turbocharged engine producing 170 horsepower. It's also rated at 184 pound-feet of torque. And then you move up to the top of the line trim which is the Jetta GLI, the one I drove, and that features a 2.0-liter engine turbocharge inline 4 and that produces 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.  That starts at about $30,000. 6th & 7th Generation VW Jetta - aka Mk6 & Mk7 Tom: Another outstanding feat of granular recollection of detail. Folks, Clinton and I are just sitting here talking. I, of course, have my pen in hand, notepad in front of me. Clinton is just going off the top of his head with these details of the vehicles, so that's why we call him "the Professor." Thank you much for all those details, as always. You drove the GLI, the sporty version. "It's got plenty of power, especially with that 270 pound-feet of torque and 210 horsepower." And to clarify, not long from now,
