Bonus song: Didn’t I walk on the water (Mark Lowry) [Verse 1]As I kneel in the darkness, in the middle of the nightI'm praying for assurance, everything's gonna be alrightLord I see another battle, out in front of meI'm afraid I won't be able, and I'll go down in defeat [Chorus]And He said I walked on the waterI calmed the raging sea I spoke to the wind, it hushed and I gave you peaceDidn't I run to your rescueDidn't I hear you when you calledI walked right beside you, just so you wouldn't fallDidn't I leave all of heavenJust to die for your sinsI searched until I found you, and I'd do it all again [Verse 2]And He said, Do you remember, where I brought you fromJust take a look behind you, and see how far you've comeEvery time you've asked me, didn't I deliver youSo why would you be thinking, that I would not see you through [Chorus] Didn't I walk on the waterDidn't I calm the raging seaI spoke to the wind, it hushed and I gave you peaceDidn't I run to you rescueDidn't I hear you when you calledI walked right beside you, just so you wouldn't fallDidn't I leave all of heavenJust to die for your sinsI searched until I found you, and I'd do it all again. [Verse 3]Now she's talking to her father, in a house that was a homeSays my bills are coming due, Lord, six days just ain't that long She hears a voice so still and low it says, I've moved like that beforeI'll do this little thing for you, and I'll give you so much more [Chorus] Didn't I walk on the water Didn't I calm the raging seaI spoke to the wind, it hushed and I gave you peaceDidn't I run to your rescueDidn't I hear you when you calledI walked right beside you, just so you wouldn't fallDidn't I leave all of heaven Just to die for your sinsI searched until I found you, and I'd do it all again Didn't I Walk on the Water · Mark LowryFrom the album: What's Not to Love?℗ 2017 Daywind Records

Life presents itself in many forms and fashions. And one way we participate in life, within our community, is by abiding by rules. But sometimes it's hard to follow the rules. Temptations jump in the way to distract our goals and confuse our minds. Even if we're grounded by our heart, it's still hard to follow the rules. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact Our children are tempted too, more so than ourselves. We can build restraint based on experiences and beliefs. But our children are lured and enticed by what they don't have. What you don't have, you want. Think about it from a food perspective. If you are told not to eat something, then what do you want? You only seem to crave THAT and you want what you can't have. Same goes for our children. The hardships that they face --- these hardships are greater due to the fact that they are still discovering who they are, what they want to be, their purpose in life. Too many unknowns that it can overwhelm them. Yet the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. If your child can become overwhelmed by the rules you've set, so can YOU become overwhelmed by the rules you've set. Now understand, I'm not saying to throw out the rules. You can't have a life without boundaries, even God sets boundaries for us as His children. So what is one to do when sometimes it's hard to follow the rules? *****SPONSORED BY: Health, Hope and Inspiration Podcast https://healthhopeandinspiration.com First, think about where the rules originated from. We grew up with rules; what you can and cannot do, when you have to go to bed, what you're allowed to eat and how late, and how you are allowed to dress. How are you using those rules in your life now? Pizza night because you had it growing up? Do you enjoy a late night snack? Look at how you organize your home. How meticulous are you with each room? How is this mirrored in your life? How are these rules and patterns carried out within your family? "We tend to follow what is set before us; part habit, part comfort." But is it really working for you? In life, we are working toward what? RESULTS!!! Results that bring us success. We want our children to succeed. With rules, you set boundaries that will set them up for success. Rules are not made for punishment. Rules are for safety and well-being, moral and ethical beliefs, religious beliefs. "Rules create a lifestyle!" So when you're challenged by following the rules, rewrite the rules. Sometimes you have to rewrite the rules to give you your desired outcome. There's deeper connection, cohesiveness. The K.I.S.S. ~ Rewrite the Rules! Rewrite the rules to open the door of opportunities that will serve your lifestyle commitment to you and your family. When you rewrite the rules, it's what is being given to you not what's being taken from you. Giving vs. Taking This is a different perspective to have a deeper connection and cohesiveness to the goals you desire; therefore the rules you set. Rules support your goals! What's NOT working? (Examples: bedtime, eating) Know the GOAL you are after. Define SUCCESS for that goal. Set up the STEPS for success - the how to, put the rule into action. Take A.I.M. Build consistency. Practice brings progress. And don't forget to ask for help (a coach, a mentor, your husband, a girlfriend, etc.). I know when you're seeking business advice, it's really easy to learn about the success of others; but no one really talks much about failure. A lot of people don't know I actually had some other businesses that have FAILED ever since I sold my agency. People think I've just jumped from one successful business to another. Not the case... In 1999, I became an accidental agency owner, like many of you. I was a solopreneur creating websites and DBA Swenk Technologies. That led me to the opportunity to get involved in a lot of other businesses. I owned 1031 Exchange along with a lawyer and an accountant. It failed. In 2000, I was involved with MiTowne which was social network for finding service providers in your local area. It failed. BUT... That's how I met my (future) business partner. He and I merged our businesses to create Solar Velocity, the digital agency. It was mega successful. Look, you're going to have some failures but they will lead you to success. Don't give up! Fast forward 12 years when we sold Solar Velocity and I was trying to figure out what's next for me. I figured the money is at the product level, so I created a new company and a product. So I created Super Dog Apps and developed an app for journaling your daily meals. I hated it and it failed. Then... One of my former agency competitors came to me for some advice. Since they were no longer competition I was glad to help. I fell into the role of helping other agencies and eventually, it turned into 5 years of JasonSwenk.com becoming the #1 resource for digital agency owners. Now, this business has branched out into others... including Sales Pipeline Accelerator, as well as a few others in the idea stage. Look, it's easy to compare yourself to others and feel inferior. Especially when everyone just their wins and successes out there. I am telling you, I have failed at more business that I've succeeded at! You'll never fail -- you'll only learn or succeed. So tell me... what are you working on now? What's NOT working? Association Health Plans and the insurance companies that provide coverage will select the services included and their decisions are exempt from State laws. Creates a fund that will pay insurers to continue coverage if the plans disappears. The fund can be raided by the Executive Branch to pay for other things "whenever the Secretary determines that the moneys of the fund are in excess of current needs." A working group would be created to write the regulations. The applications for plans will include the States in which the plan intends to do business. Would become effective one year after being signed into law and enactment regulations would be created by the Secretary of Labor. "The jury shall note be informed about the maximum award for noneconomic damages." States will have the ability to adjust this number, up or down. Actual economic losses (such as medical expenses, past and future earnings losses, and loss of employment) in health care lawsuits will remain unlimited. Each guilty party in a health care lawsuit will only be held liable for the percentage of the damages in direct proportion to that party's percentage of responsibility. Doctors who prescribe a medicine that has been approved by the FDA can't be sued along with manufacturers, distributors, or sellers in product liability lawsuits Any statements or conduct expressing "fault" (along with apology, sympathy, etc.) made by a health care provider in regards to an unexpected medical outcome "shall be inadmissible" for any purpose as evidence of an admission of liability. States are allowed to make other communications inadmissible too. Both of these rules, or protections, went through a long process, and whether you agree with them or not, there was a process. Here we are; the committees with jurisdiction did no hearings on this, have basically—there’ll be no opportunity for review. We know what the outcome is going to be: two more closed rules. So it’s kind of this whole hearing is kind of pointless because, again, the process is going to be the most restrictive that it can be. 9:40 Rep. Tim Walberg (MI): As you know, Title X is the only domestic federal program that provides grants for family-planning services. Grants go directly to states and non-governmental organizations, which then distribute money among healthcare providers. Over half of the grantees are state and local governmental agencies, which serve as intermediaries to distribute funding to subgrantees. Prior to this rule, states were free to direct their Title X funds to healthcare providers that did not participate in abortion. When states had this freedom, they were able to choose to invest in women’s health care instead of abortion. The new rule blocks states from restricting grants to potential recipients for reasons other than the ability to provide Title X services. Under this rule, states are prevented from establishing criteria that would eliminate abortion providers from receiving Title X grant money. Hearing: H.R. 372, the "Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act of 2017", House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, February 16, 2017. Timestamps & Transcripts 10:15 Rep. John Conyers (MI): I am pleased that the subcommittee’s first hearing of this new Congress is on H.R. 372, the Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act of 2017, which repeals the antitrust exemption in the McCarran-Ferguson Act for the health insurance business. For many years I’ve advocated for such a repeal, so I’m heartened to see the bipartisan nature of the support for this position. 11:50 Rep. John Conyers (MI): Congress passed McCarran-Ferguson Act in response to a 1944 Supreme Court decision, finding that antitrust laws applied to the business of insurance, like everything else. Both insurance companies and the states expressed concern about that decision. Insurance companies worried that it would jeopardize certain collective practices like joint-rate setting and a pooling of historical data, and the states were concerned about losing their authority to regulate and tax the business of insurance. To address these concerns, McCarran-Ferguson provided the federal antitrust laws apply to the business of insurance only to the extent that it is not regulated by state law, which has resulted in a broad antitrust exemption. Industry and state revenue concerns, rather than the key goals of protecting competition and consumers, were the primary drivers of the Act. In passing McCarran-Ferguson, Congress, however, initially intended to provide only a temporary exemption and, unfortunately, gave little to consideration to ensuring competition. 26:15 Rep. Austin Scott (GA): Be definition, health care and health insurance are not the same thing. But when one insurance company controls such significant portions of the cash flow of all of the providers in a region, no provider can stay in business without a contract with that carrier. Therefore, the insurance company gets to determine who is and who is not able to provide health care: sign a contract with a competing carrier, and we’ll cancel your contract. Accept the lower reimbursement, or we’ll cancel your contract. It’s closer to extortion than negotiation. Hearing: Legislative Proposals to Improve Health Care Coverage, House Committee on Education and Workforce, March 1, 2017. Witnesses Allison Klausner: American Benefits Council, which represents Fortune 500 companies Lydia Mitts: Associate Director of Affordability at Families USA, a consumer advocate org. Jay Ritchie: Executive VP of Toko Marine HCC-Stop Loss Group & Chairman of the Self-Insurance Institute of America Jon Hurst: President of the Retailers Association of Massachusetts Timestamps & Transcripts 25:50 Rep. Virginia Foxx (NC): Ultimately, they are fighting to maintain government control—government control over the kind of health insurance you can buy, government control over the kind of health insurance employers can and cannot offer workers, government control over the doctors you can see and the doctors you can’t see, and government control over certain healthcare benefits that many individuals may not need. Yet despite the cost and pain inflicted on so many Americans by Obamacare, the answer for some is still more government control. 47:35 Lydia Mitts: The second bill I would like to speak to is the Small Business Health Fairness Act. This bill would exempt association health plans from adhering to critical state and federal requirements for small-group coverage. These requirements have benefited small employers and their workers alike. They include protections that prevent plans from charging small employers exorbitantly higher premiums because their employees have poor health, are older, or are disproportionately women. They also include requirements that plans cover comprehensive benefits that meet the needs of a diverse workforce. By allowing association health plans to ignore these key protections, this bill would increase premiums and threaten stable access to comprehensive coverage for many small employers and their workers. Employers with a young workforce that is in pristine health may be able to get lower premiums. However, the rest of small businesses would see coverage become less affordable, whether they sought it through an association or the existing small-group market. On top of this, employees move to association plans would be at risk of facing skimpier coverage that doesn’t cover the care they need. 1:41:20 Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (OR): Ms. Mitts, the ACA included, as we know, unprecedented new consumer protections for patients, such as eliminating annual and lifetime limits, preventing insurers from dropping people when they get sick, charging women higher premiums. What will happen to these protections in association health plans? Lydia Mitts: Under the bill put forth to you today, those association health plans would no longer have to comply with so many of those rating protections that have been a huge benefit to many small businesses that prior before the Affordable Care Act actually had a really hard time finding affordable coverage for their employees because they employed employees who actually had healthcare needs, who were maybe older, and the market didn’t work for them before. And so we would move back to a situation where we’d have a segmented market, and people who are healthy, in pristine health, could move into an association health plan. I think the thing that’s important to keep in mind is that that doesn’t mean that association health plan would always be there and work for that small employer. If their workforce got older, claims went up, they might find that that association health plan charges them more, and it’s not a viable option for them anymore. Bonamici: Can you address—I know there’ve been some solvency concerns about some of the association health plans. Can you address that concern as well? Mitts: Yeah, there’s historically been concerns about association health plans not having adequate solvency funds. They have leaner, less rigid requirements than typical health insurance coverage. Partially state oversight was added to that to help address some of these problems, bigger problems, where they were just under ERISA. And when an association plan goes insolvent, their employers and their workers are still left with all of those unpaid medical claims and then on the hook for them. And if the plans are not under state jurisdiction, they won’t be able to benefit from state guaranty funds that help pay those claims, so they’ll be left on the hook for them. Hearing: H.R. 1215 Hearing-Part 1, House Committee on the Judiciary, February 28, 2017. Timestamps & Transcripts 44:20 Rep. Steve King (IA): One of the drivers of higher healthcare spending is defensive medicine. It’s a very real phenomenon confirmed by countless studies in which healthcare workers conduct many additional costly tests and procedures with no medical value that are charged to the federal taxpayers and to other consumers simply to avoid excessive litigation costs. 45:25 Rep. Steve King (IA): They include the following: a bedside sonogram with an “official sonogram” because it’s easier to defend yourself to a jury if you’ve ordered the second sonogram; a CT scan for every child who bumped his head, or her head, to rule out things that can be diagnosed just fine by observation; x-rays that do not guide treatment such as for a simple broken arm; or CT scans for suspected appendicitis that has been perfectly well diagnosed without it. In fact, I have an orthopedic surgeon who has said to me that when he has a knee injury, 97% of the tests that he orders are protection from malpractice. He knows what he’s going to operate on before he actually starts the surgery. 51:55 Steve Cohen: And if we want to make health care cheaper, which we should, and make it more affordable, we ought to have a single-payer system. That would make it more affordable. And if that’s the nexus that makes this law applicable for the federal government to usurp the states, and the Chairman said that the nexus was that it makes things cheaper and anything makes health care cheaper is so important that we need to take it away from the states, well, if you’re concerned about cost, you should be for a single-payer system, and that would make it cheaper and take profits away from insurance companies that right now are paying for ads to get people to buy drugs and making immense profits and having their executives draw salaries in the areas of 40 and 50 million dollars. This bill takes away from people who are hurt by medical malpractice in ways that are artificial and wrong, and we should not be on the side of those people who commit medical malpractice and cause injuries to others. With all of that said, I respectfully suggest that the agenda we’re following is not the agenda of the American people at the present time, and it’s the agenda of the American Medical Association, who’s here today, and this is the bill du jour. Hearing: Tom Price, HHS Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Request, Senate Finance Committee, June 8, 2017. Timestamps & Transcripts 44:37 Sen. Tom Carper (DE): And I like those ideas. I studied a little bit of economics at Ohio State as navy ROTC midshipman. I like market forces. I like trying to harness market forces and make them work. You came up with a good idea in 1993, and I just wish to heck that you would work with us to try to make sure that those good ideas have a chance of working. And the reason why the marketplaces are failing in places, like you mentioned Ohio in your statement, Mr. Chairman, the reason why they’re not working, we’ve basically undermined the individual mandate so that people will know if they really have to get coverage. Young people aren’t. We’ve taken off the training wheels, so to stabilize the marketplaces and insurance companies. They lost their shirts in 2014 because of it. They lost less money in 2015. Got better. They raised their premiums, they raised their copays, they raised their deductibles, and they did better in it. And tells that rather than the marketplaces being a death spiral at the end of 2016, they’re actually recovering, until a new administration came in and said, well, we’re not sure if we’re going to enforce the individual mandate, and, by the way, we don’t know for sure whether they’re going to extend the cost-sharing arrangements. That provides unpredictable lack of certainty for the insurance companies. What do they do? They say, we’re going to raise our premiums more. What you’re destabilizing, the very idea that these guys came up with 24 years ago. Sen. Orrin Hatch (UT): Well, if I could just interrupt for a second. Those were ideas that were against—it was part of the anti-Hillary care bill, and it— Carper: They were good ideas. Tom Price: Well— Carper: And I commend you for them. If my life depended on telling what Hillary care did, I couldn’t tell you. But I know what your bill did, and, frankly, there were good ideas, and now we’re undermining undercutting them. Why? Dr. Price, why? Price: Senator, I appreciate the observation. I would add to that that there are significant challenges out there, and there were so before this administration started. In your state alone, premiums were up 108% before this administration started. In your state alone, there were fewer insurance companies offering coverage on the exchange before this administration started. So what we’re trying to do is to address especially that individual and small-group market that is seeing significant increases in premiums, increases in deduct— Carper: What are you doing? What are you doing to doing? How are you stabilizing the marketplaces? Price: Well, we— Carper: Just give us some ideas. The three Rs. What are you doing on those? Reinsurance, risk adjustment, risk corridors. What are you doing there? Price: We passed it—or we put in place a market-stabilization rule earlier this year that identified the special enrollment periods and the grace periods to make certain that they were more workable for both individuals and for insurance companies. We allowed the states greater flexibility in determining what a qualified health plan was, to try to provide greater stability for the market. We put out word to all governors across this nation on both 1115 and 1332 waivers and suggestions regarding what they can do to allow for greater market stabilization in their states, and we look forward to working with you and other senators to try to make certain that all those individuals, not just in the individual and small-group market but every single American has the opportunity to gain access to the kind of coverage that works for them and their families. Sen. Mazie Hirono designated February 3rd as "National Wear Red Day." This is what she wore. Wilson, MA, MHC, CPHQ, Public Speaker and Trainer — Diversity and Inclusion, Cultural and Linguistic Competence, Health Equity Are patients and family members feeling more positive about the experiences they’re having in the US health care system? Are they feeling more connected to their care teams? With so much attention being paid to improving patient satisfaction scores, and with patient-centered care so central to just about every health care organization’s strategic goals and mission, you’d think the answer would be a resounding yes. But the picture is decidedly mixed, according to recent surveys and many champions of person- and family-centered care (PFCC). Research and anecdotal evidence suggest that too many patients continue to have negative health care experiences — even when providers feel that they’re making improvements and actively engaging patients. We explored the disconnect and the dynamics of the patient experience on the October 6 WIHI: Improving Patient Experience — What's Working, What's Not.

Hello Monday Morning... and YOU!  Thanks for coming back to listen to this week's No More Excuses podcast! It's May 1st... 7 months left in the year. Lots of time to learn, grow, make mistakes and SUCCEED!  The last month I've referred to FOCUS a lot. Why? Because it is the epicenter of your success. If you don't stay focused, what happens? In this week's podcast I ask you to go back to #53 and make sure you've made a list and figured out something you could do differently or try. And now how has that been going? What's worked? What's NOT worked? And, as the quote for today's podcast says: "Deciding what NOT to do is just as important as deciding what TO do." ~ Steve Jobs I'm currently working with a client who wants to grow his business. He needs one of his staff people to focus on a specific area, but he also needs things taken off of HIS plate. And he has another staff person who isn't playing at the level he needs him too, so what can he do? MAKE A LIST! Yep! He needs to know what he is doing himself that he can pass off, and to which staffer. AND WHY! And it all starts with a list.  So my challenge to you, yet again, is to make a list of what's been working, not working, what you love and don't love about what you do. We've all made "pro's and con's list"... so just like that. And then tell me (post here or email me) what that is and how you can utilize the next 7 months (244 days) to the best of your ability and to your advantage to accomplish YOUR goals, achieve YOUR success. And if you can't figure it out - contact me or another Coach to do a strategy session so you can end this year saying "That kicked ASS let's do that again"!  Have a great week! And PLEASE SHARE this podcast! Oh and if you have not connected with me click here for my Facebook page and LinkedIN or Twitter and get the weekly posts with questions, articles and info to make you THINK! Cheers! Sandi

Regular guest host, Craig Schneider, joins Bob and Dale this week. Bob interviews Bryan White from 13th Floor cigars. The guys offer differing opinions about the Cigar of the Week, the 13th Floor Foundation Series Robusto. Also this week, Dan Welsh, owner of New Havana Cigars is the guest on"What's Hot, What's Not, What's Next." Cigar of the Week - 13th Floor Foundation Series Robusto 13th Floor is a very new cigar from Bryan White. The cigar features a flavorful Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Ecuadorian binder, and filler from Nicaragua. Bryan worked with Willie Herrera at El Titan de Bronze to develop this cigar. The Foundation Series comes in three sizes: Robusto (5X50), Toro (6x52) and Churchill (7x50). You can follow Bryan on Twitter as smokinonthe13th and the web site is http://www.13thfloorcigars.com/. Dark Side - CUABA DIVINOS Rob from Friends of Habanos has this to say about the Cuaba Divinos: With older siblings like Traditional and Generoso plus parents like Diadema and Salomones....you may think that the baby Divino will carry on the anemic flavour bloodline. Not so. I sit here before you smoking a March 07 Divino and it is a wild child of the highest order. What a mongrel it is. Full of pepper spice and deep rich tobacco. Full bodied powerhouse whose only intention is to smack you in the mouth. How embarassed of its famiy it must be....no doubt it will be seeking a court hearing to disassociate itself from the bland siblings and Brady Bunch parents. Outside of some opening bitter chocolate I got nothing out of this Divino except tobacco, pepper and pain....I am thrilled. Way too young to evaluate but it will be a cracker of a cigar with some time to age. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Hoyo de Monterrey Reposado Robusto, 5.25" x 54 - Packaged in cedar sleeves with a total of 3 bands, this cigar screams up from the shelves "buy me!". The cigars are rested in cedar for 4-6 months while aging, thus the Reposado en Cedros moniker. Medium bodied with an intense cedar aroma and flavor, the cigar is quite pleasant for the first 2/3. Not many other flavors can rise up above that strong cedar woodiness. Room 101 - A more reasonably sized Toro than the monster I had a couple weeks ago. Still strong, but this time with flavor and no harshness. I really enjoyed this one. Liga Privada Flying Pig - the cigar I ended up smoking as my quiet time/birthday cigar. What else have you been smokin' Craig? Tatuaje SW Reserva Maduro - Absolutely excellent experience. Possibly the best Tat I've ever had. Tatuaje Boris - A good cigar with nice 'baking spice' flavors. This has matured and started changing in the year since its release. Not as full flavored as it once was but it is shaping up to be a cigar that performs well with its age. Diamond Crown Maximus Robusto - Lovely honey core with decent strength and terrific flavor. Worth trying. Worth trying AGAIN. What else have you been smokin' Bob? La Herencia Black Label, Red Label, Yellow Label, White Label - Manufactured in Ybor City by a father / son team. (See our interview with Abraham and Roberto on smugmug.) Excellent construction, the cigars range in strength from mild to full but all exhibit soft shoulders from being well blended and aged. Smoke is smooth and flavorful across the line. Also available on-line and Tabacalera Ramirez is now opening a factory in Nicaragua while working to begin distribution across the country. If you are in the Tampa area, stop and say hello and get a deal on some fine cigars. Joya de Nicaragua Classico - Joya de Nicaragua was once an extremely popular cigar here in the US. Then came the Sandinistas and an embargo to suddenly shut off their largest market and their factory. But the people behind JdN were stubborn and they fought to reopen the factory with new ownership and developed new markets around the world to wait out the political whims of their own and our governments. When JdN returned to the US they found their old distribution channels gone and a new generation of smokers that did not recognize the brand. Undeterred, the factory family (jobs are obtained through family members and personal recommendations) drove on creating the Antanos, the multi-wrapper Celebration, and in 2000 a reblend of their flagship, the Classico. Available in five sizes, Churchill, Toro, Lonsdale, Torpedo and my selection the Robusto. This is a mild-medium flavored cigar with a Nicaraguan grown Criollo wrapper. JdN is a finely crafted cigar (some of the rollers have been there for 50 years) that is skillfully aged with great attention to detail and finish. This cigar has been made in the same factory since its introduction in 1963 and by a proud ensemble of workers that fought for the survival of the brand. This pride is evident in every cigar bearing the name. Great aged tobacco flavors with slight leather and nuts. Excellent smoke. Illusione Cuchillos Cubanos - Thanks to Joe Fuller of Fuller's Pullers for sending these out. A mixed filler cigar with nice flavors and a respectable price. Easy recommendation as a value cigar at just over $3 each in five packs. What's My Band? - #927 from Bruce Berg; Punch London Club September Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Kris Allen from Mineral Wells, Tx won the classic black Palio Cutter. Don Kiki Brown and Green - Not something I would have normally picked up to smoke as they do not resonate with me; well they didn't before now. This is really a well made cigar with smooth flavors of tobacco, very slight spice and a light savoryness that made for a very pleasant smoke. Di Fazio Red Label - Honduran Puro La Aurora 107 Robusto Tatuaje La Verite - Thanks to Tobacconist University for providing me with this fine cigar to review. I was fortunate to see these cigars while still in the aging room at My Father Cigars in Estelli. Pete was like a proud Papa when he showed us the shelves full of these beautiful sticks. For those of you that may not know, the la Verite is a special project of Pete Johnson and Pepin Garcia to produce a cigar containing only tobacco from a single year and a single vega (farm). Something that has not been done or even considered in the cigar business before now. When the project was first announced it caused a wave of discussion amongst cigar enthusiasts, not for its proposed recipe but for its proposed sales methodology. Pete had intended to sell futures in the cigar much like is done with wines. In the wine business it is common for certain vintages to be 'pre-sold' prior to being tasted outside of the vineyard. This is in essence a speculation on the final quality of the product with the hope that the investor will realize financial gain by buying in early at a discount and that the final street price will be higher. It was a revolutionary concept for the cigar industry and unfortunatley for Pete and Pepin, it was not well received by enough of the consumer market to be a success. Nonetheless, the cigars were being produced anyway and now they are available to the public with a production of 20,000 cigars - 400 boxes of 25 and 1000 boxes of 10. This cigar has a very nice body and a clean burn. It tastes very peppery with a grass undertone and a metallic retrohale. But the pepper was the dominant flavor. Pepper is easy to identify once you learn to recognize the sharpness on the edges of your tongue and the back of your jaw. One thing I really enjoyed was the aroma of this smoke. It was beautiful through the nose, intensifying the flavor without being overpowering. The entire smoke was consistently smooth. There was a bit of a dry finish but nothing harsh or unpleasant to me. Cedar was especially prominent at the beginning of the smoke, but more complexity with earth flavors came forward as the smoke continued. This is not a powerhouse, but a medium bodied smoke with some lovely characteristics. At $20 a stick it isn’t a daily smoke, but one for special occasions. As they are from a single crop and vintage, they are limited. I think this will be a nice addition to the Tatuaje line. What's My Band? - #932 from Liz; AJ. Kurt lets us know what his customers are buying and what new releases he is expecting in the upcoming weeks. Cigar of the Week - Dona Flor Selecao SELECAO ROBUSTO - 5x52 Mata Fina Maduro wrapper. All Brazilian Dark Side - ROMEO Y JULIETA CHURCHILL Churchill - 7" x 47 (178 x 18.65 mm), Julieta No. 2, a churchill Romeo y Julieta marque was established in 1875 by Inocencio Alvarez and Mannin Garcia. The brand is named for Shakespeare's famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. Between 1885 and 1900, the brand won numerous awards at different tasting exhibitions (as still evidenced by the gold medals on the brand's logo). However, the brand truly bloomed after it was acquired by Jose "Pepin" Rodriguez Fernandez, former head of the Cabañas factory in Havana, and his firm, Rodríguez, Argüelles y Cia, in 1903. Being a very cosmopolitan man, Rodriguez constantly travelled across Europe and the Americas, actively promoting his brand, and entering his horse, the aptly named Julieta, in racing events across the world. As a result of his salesmanship, the brand became exceptionally popular around the world among wealthy customers, many of whom demanded personalized bands for their cigars. At its height, as many as 2000 personalized cigar bands were produced for customers. The brand was also known at this time for specializing in figurado cigars, such as perfectos and pirámides, with over a thousand such shapes believed to have been in production. Sir Winston Churchill was perhaps the brand's most famous devotee. The flagship vitola of the brand is named in his honor, a long 7" by 47 ring gauge cigar known as the Churchill. Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first woman to serve as governor of a state in the U.S., also frequently smoked them. After Rodriguez's death in 1954 (he was 88 years old), the revolution, and the subsequent nationalization of the tobacco industry, the brand was moved to La Romana in the Dominican Republic, where production of a Romeo y Julieta cigar for the American market continues today under the direction of Altadis SA. The Cuban government nationalized the brand and still produces and distributes it worldwide as one of its top-selling global brands. In 2006, a new addition was made to the regular Romeo y Julieta lineup. The Short Churchill size, a Robusto, was introduced at the 8th Annual Habanos Festival in Havana, Cuba in 2006. Romeo y Julieta also produces three machine-made cigarillos: minis, clubs and puritos. What else have you been smokin' Dale? La Caridad Del Cobre - the new blend from Frank Herrera. A very nice cigar with tons of flavor, great construction and available in several sizes. Deep, rich flavors that excite the pallate with full body and medium strength. Leans to the earthy, savory flavored side of the spectrum. Room 101 - Probably the strongest cigar I've smoked in a long time. The blend has it's moments, but is not well balanced. The strength overpowers and is several notches above a LFD Air Bender or Double Ligero. Avo Heritage Short Robusto - Outstanding complexity and depth of flavor! Definitely my favorite AVO cigar, this new line has a well balanced kalidascope of flavors that features some great spice, some mellow sweetness, a wonderful grain/bread flavor and varied earthy notes. The wrapper is oily & elegant, the construction & burn is perfect. Rocky Patel Fifteenth Anniversary - Truly very good and fully pleasurable cigar! Coffee, nuts, a touch of citrus and faint fruity sweetness combine for a mini-vacation for the senses. Bad Dog Patch 56 Cain F Habano Joya Cubana Padilla Miami What else have you been smokin' Bob? Hemingway Short Story - another of my old favorites that I had not smoked in a good long while. The Hemingway line from Fuente is an old favorite of mine. Abandoned in the 70's and resurrected in the 80's, what was once the Fuente TALES line, became the Hemingway. Originally a line of Cuban Perfectos, the resurrection ocurred when the Fuentes opened shop in the Dominican Republic. The line had been abandoned in part because the master rollers who knew how to roll these magnificent cigars had all retired or passed away. Carlos Fuente Sr. was the only one left who knew how to make these shaped cigars and with a little prodding from Jr, he dug up the old molds in Ybor City and began to teach a new generation how to make the Cuban Perfecto shapes that give this line a unigue character. My favorite in the line is the funky Short Story. At 4.5" x 46/49 it is a marvelous shape to behold. When you first light up the little nipple tip, the draw is resistent, even difficult but within seconds as the burn line advances towards the shoulder on this tiny foot, the draw opens up and the flavors begin to swell in your mouth. This is the experience that I look for in every perfecto I smoke, that crescendo of flavor as the cigar opens up. Grab yourself a Short Story and experience not only a blast of history, but that experience of blossoming flavor. Man-o-War Ruination - Manufactured at Tabacalera Fernandez in Nicaragua, Man O’ War is by far one of the best full-bodied cigars currently available. Man O’ War was developed by Abdel "AJ" Fernandez, a protégé of Don Alejandro Robaina, the man who is considered to be the “Godfather” of tobacco. After spending most of his life studying in Cuba under Don Alejandro, Abdel Fernandez moved to Nicaragua to begin producing his own cigars. After only 6 years, Abdel currently produces Rocky Patel’s Fusion, Indian Tabac 10th Anniversary, Padilla Habano, and Sol Cubano Cuban Cabinet. However, of all the cigars produced at Abdel’s factory, he personally considers Man O’ War to be his best blend. Habano Ecuador wrapper - The leaf is taken from the upper middle portion of the plant, known as viso, These viso leaves are then put through a three-year fermentation process that is personally overseen by Fernandez himself. Once this wrapper is ready, it is combined with a blend of aged Nicaraguan filler, harvested from three separate farms. Man O’ War produces hearty, earthy flavors with hints of cashews and almonds that are masked by a peppery aftertaste and a touch of sugar. Liz smoked an Oliva G Maduro Robusto and loved it. She enjoyed the sweetness. This is one of the all time value cigar choices at $4.50 per on average. Liz also enjoyed these brands this week: Brun del Re Premium; Davidoff Lancero; Guillermo Leon; Monte Pascoal; Elogio Lancero; and Carlos Torano Virtuoso. What's My Band? - #931 from Liz; A. Cigar of the Week - Di Fazio Maduro We did an interview with these folks almost a year ago before any one had heard of the cigars. We liked what we smoked then and now they have become a hot stick getting reviewed by all the major blogs and such since an appearance at the International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers (IPCPR). Dark Side - Punch Punch - Ramon Allones What else have you been smokin' Craig? New Tatuaje releases: Veracu #5(unbanded 4x40), Petit Cazadores (uncut wrapper) & Petit Reserva - 4x28 was the most enjoyable. 1998 Punch Monarcas en tubo Hunters & Frankau Selection. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Bad Dog Maduro Torpedo God of Fire Robusto (2006) Fresh Rolled LGC, Leo Perez What else have you been smokin' Bob? Zino Platinum Sceptor Master Edition 2009 Maduro from Davidoff - One fine smoke with terrific flavors of sweet peppers and subtle but charming hints of cocoa. Zino Platinum Master Edition 2009 Maduro cigars come in a variety of shapes and sizes inspired by the urban, pop-culture spirit. The blend consistes of 3 Dominican filler tobaccos, a rare Peruvian filler leaf, a 4-year-aged Connecticut binder and a 1-year-aged Ecuadorian wrapper. Really a great smoke. Tatuaje Havana VI (red label) Nobles - The 5x50 Nobles is an excellent example of the cooperation between its maker, Don Pepin Garcia and the creator Pete Johnson. The Havana VI is the product of Pete Johnson's vision and Pepin Garcia's craftsmanship. A Nicaraguan puro, the filler is a blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos (the Havana VI blend), the binder is from Nicaragua and the wrapper is Nicaraguan Corojo 99. It is a medium- to full-bodied cigar released in October 2006 in 6 models. The cigars have a simple red band with white print. La Aurora 107 Robusto - Still one of my favorite go to cigars for great Dominican taste. Full of flavor but not too strong, these cigars fit the definition of and are a testament to the great blending skills of Jose Blanco and Guillermo Leon. EP Carillo Short Run Populares - I only hope that the Short Run runs long enough to get some more sticks from the hands of EP Carillo. Makes you wonder what we may have missed out on all those years he was working at General Cigar. EP is taking advantage of a new environment that allows him to make cigars in smaller batches, taking advantage of tobaccos that are in limited quantity but of outstanding quality. Hoyo de Monterrey Reposado en Cedros - Actually was looking forward to these after seeing them at IPCPR, unfortunatley I find they are not my cup of tobacco. The flavors seem to be disjointed and in opposition. Too much going on in this complex cigar to let the smoker get comfortable and relax. What's My Band? - #930 from Liz; La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero; 6 x 52 Chisel tip, nice dark oily wrapper. August Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Dave Wallace won a gold Palio Cutter in the August contest. Enter the September contest now to win a classic black Palio Cutter. This week Colin Ganley of CigarTourism.com and Bob talk about the January 2011 trip to Nicaragua in which Bob will be participating. Also this week, the debut of "What's Hot, What's Not, What's Next" - Cigar retailers from around the country share buyer passions and passes and let us know what new releases are on order. This week Michael Herklots from Davidoff of Geneva, New York city stores (Madison Avenue and The Shops at Columbus Circle); Heather Haddad from Fumee Cigar Lounge in Austin, Texas; and Doug Fiore from Winston's Humidor in Midlothian, Virginia share their insights. Cigar of the Week - Esteban Carreras 5150 - The Esteban Carreras 5150 series is a medium bodied Corojo with an Ecuadorian grown Sumatra wrapper and Nicaraguan fillers and binder. Dark Side - RAMON ALLONES SMALL CLUB CORONAS Length: 110 Ring: 42 Format: Minuto Ramón Allones is one of the big names in the history of Habanos. Founded in 1837, it is also one of the oldest brands in production. A Galician by birth, Ramón Allones was the first cigar manufacturer to pack his cigars in boxes decorated with labels and stamped with his brand's emblem. He was the pioneer of the packaging that we know today. All of the Ramon Allones cigars are filled with a blend of tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region, characterised by their intense and complex taste. What else have you been smokin' Colin? Cruzado Mario What else have you been smokin' Dale? Torano Single Region Serie Jalapa Robusto 5 x 52 - One of the most exciting releases from IPCPR if you are into understanding how tobacco from one specific region tastes. In this case, all the tobacco in the Jalapa series comes from one farm in the Jalapa area of Nicaragua. It's very hard to make a deep, rich, complex blend from just one area, but Torano has done it with this cigar! Well balanced in strength, roundness and body, with earthy flavors & natural sweetness. The room aroma is a touch spicy and intoxicating! Try one of these to sample the character of Jalapa tobacco. Don Francisco Lancero - A gift to me from ER Doc during his visit last month, this cigar was perhaps the most flavorful cigar I smoked this week. Layer upon layer of tastes kept building, providing one of the most complex cigars I've had in a long time. Superb construction allowed a slow, cool smoke. Full bodied and medium in strength, the list of flavors noted is way long, but in the main; nuts, citrus, espresso, cedar and vanilla were the highlights. Casa Magna Colorado and Casa Magna Sungrown What else have you been smokin' Bob? CAO La Traviata Maduro - La Traviata Maduro is everything the La Traviata cigar should have been last year; why it took CAO a year to make the right cigar is beyond me. They ruined the Brazillia by making it in a monster 60 rg; however, this cigar makes up for it. The La Traviata Maduro proves that CAO can make good cigars without going all Hollywood. Torano Master - New blend from the Torano family. Carlos Torano has broken the mold at Torano CIgars and produced a slightly more full flavored cigar that is complex and pleasing. An outstanding cigar with complex flavor and great construction. Year after year the Torano family continues to put out fine cigars and now they are once again in charge of their own distribution. If you thought they only did mild-medium cigars, smoke this and you will change your mind. Macanudo Cru Royale - For me this was the biggest surprise of the IPCPR; it has flavor; it has style; and it has great construction. I want more of these. The Cru Royale demonstrates that General Cigar is not stuck in the past nor are they afraid to take a chance. I was disappointed in the results of using Ometepe tobacco in their other blends and this cigar shows you don't need trickery or gimmicks to make an excellent cigar. The PUNCH Upper Cut was a bland result of too many taste tests and committee work that resulted in a bland and disappointing cigar. The Cru Royale landed a hook on the Uppercut to put it on the mat. What's My Band? - #921 from Liz H. Upmann Reserve Maduro 5x50 Robusto with wonderful pre-smoke barnyard aromas. August Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Dave Wallace won a gold Palio Cutter. Enter the September contest to win a classic black Palio Cutter.
