Eric G is about to drop some serious wisdom on kitchen and bath design that you won't want to miss! With 35 years of experience under his tool belt and his prestigious certification from the National Kitchen and Bath Association, he's got the goods to elevate your home game. This hour, we're diving deep into his top tips and tricks for creating stunning, functional spaces that will make your friends green with envy. From the essential kitchen triangle to the must-have bathroom features, Eric's insights are not just practical; they'll save you time, money, and a whole lot of headache during your remodel. So grab your notepad and let's get ready to turn your home into the oasis you've always dreamed of!Kitchen and bath design might not sound like the most thrilling topic, but trust me, when Eric G dives into it, it's like watching a master chef at work—if that chef were also a wizard with a measuring tape! Eric, with his 35 years of experience and a badge of honor as a Certified Kitchen Designer, shares his trade secrets in this episode that'll make you rethink the way you look at your kitchen and bathroom. Ever thought about the kitchen triangle? Well, Eric says it's outdated! Instead, he's all about zones—imagine a prep zone, cleanup zone, and cooking zone, all working in harmony like a well-rehearsed band. And don't even get him started on ventilation—if you think you can skip a proper range hood, you're in for a rude awakening. He'll have you believing that proper air circulation is the key to a happy kitchen. Plus, he's got the scoop on hiring certified designers; spoiler alert: it's a must if you don't want to end up with a cabinet catastrophe. Trust me, by the end of this show, you'll be itching to grab a pencil, a notepad, and maybe even a sledgehammer to get started on your own remodel!Takeaways: Eric G emphasizes the importance of hiring a certified kitchen designer to avoid costly mistakes during renovations. He suggests that kitchen design should focus on creating functional zones rather than just the classic triangle layout. Proper ventilation and the right exhaust systems are crucial for modern kitchen designs to comply with building codes. Bathroom upgrades should include adequate electrical outlets, especially for future-proofing with features like bidet seats. This year, KBIS brought a whole new energy. This new energy and vibe was brought on by a number of issues on the minds of both design creatives, their clients and the brands that hope to be included in future projects. I think it was also fueled by a discomfort. One that many if not most of us are feeling by the political chaos created by this new administration. Now listen, before you get tribal on me, hear me out. Regardless for whom you voted, when a new administration comes in, they get to make the changes they see fit. And it doesn't really matter if you agree or disagree, it is a fact of life and elections have consequences. That was the topic of discussion that elevated above all others and I believe that this discomfort being felt has motivated many creatives to reengage in their business and recommit to to their craft despite the head winds headed our way. And you are going to hear some of those conversations! KBIS, the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, in partnership with the National Kitchen and Bath Association is one of the few “must attend” shows. The event itself is 3 days of brands, talks, programming, events and happenings while combined with the International Builders Show in the same footprint of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Every first-time attendee to the show is gobsmacked by the sheer volume of people and product. Even those who are veterans of the event seem annually surprised by the amount of walking, talking and lack of physical preparedness required to fully navigate this show. KBIS is on my list of annual must-attend events for specifiers, designers, architects and design-build firms. Why? There are a few reasons for this and following is a comprehensive, possibly incomplete, but significant nonetheless. Networking - If there is someone in the industry that you are hoping to meet, there is a very good chance that they are at KBIS. Even if they aren't, you will certainly meet others with whom you can find strategic opportunities. The event itself is optimally conducive to unplanned “run ins”, scheduled meetings and introductions. Surprise and Delight - Finding new products, materials and services are what makes the idea of a trade show so enticing. You don't know what you don't know and an event of this size makes the process of discovery fun and effective. The amount of product interaction over 3 days in over 1 million square feet of convention space is certainly an opportunity to find new products to incorporate into your designs. Learning and Education - The amount of programming that takes place over these three days is significant. There are opportunities to learn a great deal about a vast number of topics in a short period of time making this one of those rare opportunities that matches your preparedness and willingness to learn equal to the number of opportunities available. In other words, there are more available to you than you could possibly attend. We explore what's cooking at this year's KBIS. John shares what SKS is most excited about, the can't-miss products from the brand, and even reveals which SKS products he has in his own home. Plus, we dive into the future of SKS, discuss creative design installations, and get John's take on the latest trends in kitchen innovation. Topics discussed include; The SKS advantage What is a Technicurean Advantages to cooking with modern appliances Product design How SKS supports the design community through opportunity and education Benefits of a national service team Technological approach to cooking

The newest kitchen and bath ideas are always introduced at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show that was combined with the International Builders Show which was held in Las Vegas. The combined attendance for both shows was over 117,000 people who viewed more than 2,400 exhibits and walked 678,000 square feet. Whew! That is a lot of walking. Jason Miller, current president of the National Kitchen & Bath Association's Arizona North Chapter, is back with us to talk about the new trends and ideas that impressed him and will most likely be available in 2024. Sustainability from many of the manufacturers seemed to be the common theme at the show. Jason talks about the sustainable methods from some of the manufactures and what we can expect in that forum. Natural, warmer, calming colors seems to be prevalent in many of the booths but appliances and plumbing fixtures introduced their colorful items to add to the softer color palettes. Jason also described cabinet ideas for kitchens and bathrooms and new applications for countertop materials. Listen for more innovative, unique and fun ideas for your home. Most homes in America are woefully underlit. Codes are no help, because they have minimal requirements (would you believe the International Residential Code only requires ONE light in a kitchen?). Despite energy mandates requiring high efficiency LED's, there is little guidance on what kind of LED's to use and more importantly where to place them. The missing element in this discussion is how much light we need, as the population ages. A 60 year old needs 3 times the illumination as a 20 year old to see! Drawing on ten years of original research and volunteer work with both the Illuminating Engineering Society and the National Kitchen & Bath Association, architect Doug Walter will discuss optimal lighting strategies and layouts for each room in the home using the latest technologies, illustrating them with actual case studies. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Learn how to maximize lighting and daylighting in homes to support Circadian rhythms and provide adequate illumination for all age groups. 2. Attendees will understand why each end user might have different needs, and how to provide them the control and choice they require from low tech to high tech. 3. Look at residential lighting standards and industry recommendations critically, and set your own evidence-based metrics. 4. Know where to look for further learning on the topic of lighting, especially kitchens and baths, the two most critical lighting environments in the home.

LuAnn Nigara and Lori Carpenter's Ah-Ha Moments “Had I not gone to the custom home furnishings academy, I don't know what would have happened. That was the turning point for me. After that, I didn't shy away from anything.” - Lori Carpenter “It drives me crazy that consumers will ask about what the designers pay for window treatments, and even crazier that designers will answer the question.” - LuAnn Nigara More About Lori Carpenter: Lori Carpenter is an award-winning, full-service interior design professional known for her outstanding service to homeowners in Arkansas and southern Missouri. This year for the second year in a row I visited the Design & Construction Week festivities, which includes the International Builders Show (IBS) and the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS), owned by the National Association of Home Builders and National Kitchen & Bath Association, respectively. Last year's return to an in-person show in Orlando was big, but this year's event in Las Vegas was record setting. Hear about some of the innovations, trends and technologies as I discuss the event with executive editor Chelsie Butler and managing editor Leslie Claggett of CE Pro sister publication KBB, in this week's podcast episode.

It’s no secret that most seniors in America want to maintain their independence for as long as possible. In fact, according to the Disabled Living Foundation, the majority of seniors say they fear losing their independence more than they fear death. For many, a main hallmark of independence is being able to age in place. A survey by AARP revealed that 90% of Americans age 65 and over want to stay in their home and 80% believe their current residence is where they will live until they die.Other statistics show 27% of seniors currently live alone – and that number is projected to keep growing as Baby Boomers age. So, a crucial key to empowering seniors to maintain their independence, especially if they live alone, is the use of technology to monitor their health and well-being.Ryan Herd – founder of Caregiver Smart Solutions and CEO of 1 Sound Choice (a company specializing in smart home automation) – joins host Stan Massey of Transcend Strategy Group in this engaging discussion on remote monitoring technology and its increasingly important role in caregiving.Whether you’re a professional provider of home-based care or a concerned family member wanting to keep tabs on a senior loved one, existing and emerging technologies are making remote monitoring easier and more effective. Ryan and Stan cover a variety of significant factors for remote monitoring, including fall detection, looking for changes in living habits, tracking clinical vital signs and much more. With 30 years of experience in smart home technology, Ryan consults with the home building and healthcare industries and is a sought-after speaker. Because of his expertise, he was selected by the National Kitchen & Bath Association to be a 2019 NKBA Insider to assist in educating its members about the importance of collaboration between technology integrators and the design community.Ryan offers unique insight into smart home technology, the Internet of Things (IoT), and the significance of technology in the home today. He also is the author of “Join the Smart Home Revolution,” Amazon’s #1 best-selling smart home book.

This week's WE RISE episode is featuring Markie Tuckett, founder of Timber + Plumb!Markie was recently named one of the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s (NKBA) Top Thirty Under 30 as well as the DesignHounds Kitchen Design Influencer of the Year! As accomplished as she is thus far, Markie has always had a love for anything design related. From a young age, her passion for design developed into more than just a hobby and she started applying her personal design style to participate and even win awards. It was there, that she realized her true passion in design was working with interiors and she started her post-secondary education focusing on that. Once starting her college education, Markie had another realization, she didn’t love all things interiors but cabinetry and kitchens were her forte. She then aimed to use her coop experience to learn more about kitchen design and cabinetry and from there was hired full-time right out of completing her education. She worked very closely with a well-known, published kitchen designer who took her under her wing to learn and grow as an individual for several years. From working in her small home-town of Midland, Ontario - Markie craved more, so she moved to the GTA and started designing and project managing for her own set of builders. Growing more and more as a leader, she was recruited to manage a team of designers and projects for a growing kitchen design firm and even designed two of their showrooms in the GTA. Entrepreneurship was always craved by Markie, so she moved to Windsor in 2018 and started her business and from there Timber + Plumb was born.We talk about:- Moving to a new location and starting a business - Finding her clients- The local business community - Being named NKBA Top 30 under 30 and Designhounds kitchen design influencer of the year- Who inspires her in the industry - Creating an inclusive brand - How she finds inspiration - The hustle culture of entrepreneurship - Advice for an aspiring designer- Her new local business grant- And more!Resources:www.timberplumb.comSponsored by:www.paglioneestatewinery.com

Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
Are you a designer struggling to figure out your brand identity? Joan Ravasy was in the same position—and decided to make a bold move and completely redesign her brand. Darla and Natalie played a hand in helping her transition her business into something bold that reflects who she is. Listen to this episode of the Wingnut Social podcast to learn some tips to help you nail down your brand identity. Joan Ravasy is a luxury interior designer performing interior miracles for clients in New Jersey, New York City, and Florida areas. She loves a vintage aesthetic and her goal is to help people transform their houses into homes that are classic and transcend time. She is on the board of directors for the New York chapter of ASID, sits on the Design council of LG’s Signature Kitchen Suite, and is an active member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [4:02] Joan Ravasy’s background in the design industry [7:21] Trying to find your brand identity [10:32]What terrified Joan the most [12:09] Women are afraid to “play big” with branding [13:43] How Joan’s brand has evolved since rebranding [17:19] Characteristics of Joan’s brand that changed [19:13] WHY did Joan rebrand a successful business? [20:36] How to assess rebranding your business right now [24:20] What up Wingnut round! [29:52] Blooper Reel! Connect with Joan Ravasy Joan’s website Connect on LinkedIn Joan’s Pinterest Page Follow Joan on Instagram Joan Ravasy Design on Facebook Resources & People Mentioned Book: Why Men Love Bitches: From Doormat to Dreamgirl National Kitchen + Bath Association Defining your brand identity Joan was impacted both personally and professionally when a big life change disrupted her world. She decided it was time to take a serious deep-dive into her brand and make some drastic changes—which meant completely rebranding. It wasn’t about money, but about increasing exposure and recognition for her body of work. Are you struggling to nail down your unique brand? Joan recommends that designers have a close friend or family member observe them and describe who you are and what your brand is to them. You can also ask someone less familiar with your brand to share their opinion. Getting an outside perspective can help you really hone in on what you want your brand identity to be. Joan wanted to take her brand—including her website—and make it more modern. It was high time she became up to date on the latest technology trends—including social media. It was a learning curve, but she knew it was worth the work. She recommends defining your brand logo and tagline, the colors you’ll use for your website, and even how you create your graphics and work to keep them consistent across platforms. Don’t be afraid to be larger than life Joan shared that she was like most people in that she strove to be modest when asked: “What do you do?” But she realized that it’s okay to share your accomplishments—it’s part of your brand and who you are. When Darla and Natalie first met Joan, they were awestruck by her sense of style—bold, vintage, and larger than life. Natalie flat out told her that SHE was the brand. Nothing about her appearance says she plays small and her brand needed to reflect that. Women are often afraid to “play big” with branding, but it often limits their potential. Women are trained to sit there and look pretty and be people-pleasers. Joan is brave, admittedly an “all-or-nothing” type of person. She stated, “I want to do it big and I want to do it well” and was ready for her personal branding to reflect that. Joan admits the process has been a learning curve for her, but well worth the effort. She had to learn to let go and share who she is and what she does with the world. So how should designers who are considering rebranding navigate the journey right now? What direction is the design industry moving in? Listen to the whole episode as the ladies discuss finding your brand identity in a changing world. In the world of social media influencers, the stakes are high and the territory confusing to maneuver. But it doesn’t have to be, said Elle H-Millard, interior designer and insider for the National Kitchen and Bath Association. In this episode of the AEC Podcast, host Shelby Skrhak sat down with H-Millard to sort through the truths and myths of working with social media influencers in design, and tips for becoming one too. “Long gone are the days of print ads,” H-Millard said, remarking that even attention for digital ads is waning. The social media influencer said it’s important to remember that quality is better than quantity when it comes to measuring an influencer’s social following. H-Millard explained in her case, when she posts about her favorite products or manufacturers such as HanStone, her followers‘ followers can make all the difference in influencing others in the industry. This is especially true in design, where the industry runs on trusted word of mouth suggestions from other professionals, and influences are extremely visual. For that reason, keeping your social media accounts updated and current with content posts and social interaction is imperative. But she acknowledges that’s no easy feat — posting interesting and relevant content to all your various social media accounts. Her advice: Do the best you can.

The National Kitchen and Bath Association conducts one of the most comprehensive kitchen competitions I know of. Many designers I have spoken to are not even aware of the competition so I wanted to shed some light on the subject. Elle H Millard is a certified kitchen designer and Industry Relations Manager for the NKBA. She joined me for a conversation about the NKBA and the kitchen competition. I enjoyed my chat with Elle and I was reminded that designers and architects need only search for opportunities that allow them to showcase their work using the marketing power of other organizations. The NKBA provides a great opportunity to do that. ________________________________ Before we get into this conversation with Elle, I want to thank you for listening and invite you to join in the conversation, you can find us @ConvoByDesign on twitter and @ConvoXDesign on Facebook and Instagram. Matthew Ferrarini: The Next Wave of Kitchen Design Today in The Lounge, Nick talks shop with Matthew Ferrarini of Ferrarini & Co, Kitchen and Bath Designer. Matthew works out of Philadelphia, but today Nick is catching up with him on location for a client in Miami. Turns out Matthew has interior design in his blood as the son of an interior designer mom and a contractor for a dad. Find out more, in this episode of the Chaise Lounge. Breaking the Ice Nick opens up about a favorite topic for a lot of guys…automobiles. Matthew is a fan of Tesla as an everyday vehicle and Ferrari for a higher end wow-factor. When asked about recent movies, Matthew shared that he recently got the chance to watch the movie Ma Ma with Penelope Cruz. Perfect segue to Nick's recent trip to Spain with Porcelanosa. Turns out Matthew been to Barcelona a few times and is also a big fan of Spain's rich heritage, culture, friendliness and just overall coolness. Getting Into the Business Matthew attended Temple University (go Owls!) for a pre-law degree. Temple is well known for their law school, but somehow Matt just couldn't shake the calling of design. While at school, he also pursued a certificate in interior design and construction management. He joined forces with his Mom and worked in the family business while still attending school. Upon graduation, he started his own company focusing on kitchen and bath with mom, Donna, as a partner. From Humble Beginnings to Starting an Empire Starting out was rough; very humble beginnings. Having lost substantial assets upon the split of his parents, Matthew made a grassroots effort to grow his business. Local marketing with flyers and an open mind is how Ferrarini & Co got off the ground. In the beginning, no project was too small and the business took pride in the work they did and the ensuing referrals. Good work and excellent customer service got them from a home-based business to a design office and showroom staffed with 5 people that accept clients nationwide. What it Takes Matthew credits his success with clients to the broader view that he takes when designing his kitchen and baths. He doesn't just focus solely on the space that he is tasked to redesign, but incorporates all adjacent areas to ensure a seamless flow. His knack for design really comes to light in space planning and problem-solving. Here is where his passions shine. He has made it a point to stay within his strengths and delegate the things he isn't so passionate about to team members that are. Accolades and the Way of the Millennial Matthew Ferrarini's point of view has earned him the National Kitchen and Bath Association's (NKBA) '30 under 30' award. He believes in being progressive in his business and for a Millennial, that spells ‘tech' heavy. Ivy is his software of choice to keep his business running smoothly. He transitioned from using a program that was more builder/construction directed and hasn't looked back. He also uses Dropbox for file storage and Houzz as an avenue to work with clients using their lookbook feature. What seals the deal for a lot of his clients, is the use of photo-realistic renderings of what the space will look like prior to even lifting a hammer. As a value-added feature today, Nick is predicting that this will become standard in the coming years and you won't be able to call yourself a designer without it. Matthew believes in spending the time to find out as much about a client and their lifestyle as possible and creating one show-stopping design to present to them. Now that the business has grown, the marketing approach has certainly changed from the local flyer days. Ferrarini credits his storefront, referrals, and digital marketing through the website and online presence as the avenues that have gotten his name out there. His website is user-friendly, visually captivating and has something for every client. Even those that may not be ready to pull the trigger on a remodel just yet,
