See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of The 5G Factor, our series that focuses on all things 5G, the IoT, and the 5G ecosystem as a whole, we review the early market inroads and impact that Telco GenAI is delivering. The major takeaways consist of BT Group using Amazon Q's coding companion, Amazon Code Whisperer, to provide GenAI coding assistance to its software engineers, Amazon and Microsoft combining Amdocs amAIz platform and Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service to bring verticalized GenAI to telcos, and the debut of the Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF system that integrates a dedicated 5G AI Processor and 5G-Advanced-ready architecture to achieve key breakthroughs across NB-NTN satellite communications, 6-antenna architecture for smartphones, 6X carrier aggregation, and AI-based mmWave range extension for FWA CPE. Our analytical review spotlighted: Amazon CodeWhisperer Shows BT Group Early Benefits. At MWC24, BT Group announced that it deployed Amazon Q's coding companion (Amazon CodeWhisperer) to provide generative AI coding assistance to its software engineers. Specifically, Amazon CodeWhisperer generates code suggestions ranging from snippets to full functions in real time in the customer Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The solution is already providing 15-20 suggestions of code per active user per day for BT Group, with an acceptance rate of 37% by its software engineers who are using the platform. We see this as an encouraging example of the value, efficiency, and support generative AI can offer to a communication service provider (CSP) organization.   Amdocs and Microsoft Ready GenAI Specifically for CSPs. Amdocs expanded its strategic alliance with Microsoft to further bring verticalized GenAI capabilities to the telecommunications industry, combining Amdocs amAIz platform and Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. The duo has established a dedicated lab and center of excellence to further productize GenAI capabilities with the goal of accelerating adoption of GenAI technologies for CSPs. The collaboration is designed to bolster business outcomes by combining deep expertise in the communications industry with GenAI technology and industry verticalization that can produce carrier-grade business outcomes. Amdocs has built Customer Engagement Platform, which includes multiple copilot products, including sales, order enrichment, care, proposals, and other key functions, like configure price quote (CPQ), which we view as integral to providing an interconnected GenAI-infused experience across the entire CSP organization. Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 Ties Together AI and 5G Progress. During MWC24, Qualcomm unveiled its new Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System. The offering features new AI innovations based on a dedicated tensor accelerator to improve data speeds, latency, quality of service (QoS), coverage, location accuracy, spectrum efficiency, power efficiency, and multi-antenna management. it integrates a dedicated 5G AI Processor and 5G-Advanced-ready architecture to achieve what we see as several important industry milestones, including the first 5G modem with fully integrated NB-NTN satellite communications support, 6-antenna architecture for smartphones, 6X carrier aggregation, and AI-based mmWave range extension for fixed wireless access CPE.

An Assessment of Key 5G-IoT Ecosystem Developments including Open RAN Prospects, Smartphone's New Lead Role in Mobile Shopping, and 6CA Progress In this episode of The 5G Factor, our series that focuses on all things 5G, the IoT, and the ecosystem as a whole, The Futurum Group's Ron Westfall is joined by colleague and fellow analyst, Todd R. Weiss, for a look at the top 5G developments and what's going on that caught their eye including the 2023 Open RAN winners and delve into 2024 prospects including Vodafone and DT's plans, Adobe Analytics declaring smartphones the new champion of mobile shopping in the holiday 2023 season, and T-Mobile, Ericsson, and Qualcomm kicking 2024 off with a breakthrough six-carrier aggregation (6CA) test that can deliver improved performance and spectral efficiency across the T-Mobile network in providing a greater 5G user experience. Their conversation focused on: Open RAN Ends 2023 with a Flourish. Open RAN is still percolating as it makes progress across the 5G ecosystem, picking up pace in North American and Europe in 2023, and indications are that we should see further deployments of the technology in 2024. In December 2023, AT&T and Ericsson wowed the market with their $14 billion, 5-year Open RAN deal. Notably, Vodafone has been one of the more active operator advocates of Open RAN to date with more to come as the operator confirmed that it is on track with its goal to deploy 2,500 open RAN sites. DT said it plans to operate more than 3,000 O-RAN-compatible antenna sites by the end of 2026. We assess how Open RAN's mobile ecosystem progress in 2023 and sets the table for tangible gains in 2024 and beyond. Adobe Analytics: Smartphones Lead 2023 Holiday Online Shopping. Adobe Analytics came out with a most interesting take on mobile shopping during the holiday season of 2023. Driven by people shopping on their smartphones, online holiday spending reached a record $221.1 billion over the 2023 holiday season. Mobile shopping surpassed desktop shopping for the first time as spending increased 4.9% from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, compared to the same time last year. Abode Analytics indicated that 51.1% of shoppers confirmed their deals through the smartphone, setting the pace for online purchases. Mobile made up 47.1% of holiday sales in 2022. We explore why the breakthrough of smartphone online shopping represents an event horizon for why retailers need to give top priority to optimizing the smartphone shopping experience.   T-Mobile Pushes Speed Limits with Breakthrough 6CA Test: T-Mobile unveiled its first six-carrier aggregation (6CA), also described as six-component carrier aggregation (6CC), call using sub-6 GHz spectrum on its live production 5G network, describing it as a world first. Collaborating with Ericsson and Qualcomm, T-Mobile reached remarkable speeds above 3.6 Gbps in the test – fast enough, for instance, to download a two-hour HD movie in less than 7 seconds. This follows on T-Mobile announcing in May of 2023 that it was rolling out four component-carrier aggregation across its 5G Standalone network, which it stressed can achieve peak speeds of 3.3 Gbps. We assess why the 6CA milestone can deliver improved performance and spectral efficiency across the T-Mobile network in providing a greater 5G user experience.   Open RAN, RAN, 5G, 5G SA, 5G Advanced, cloud O-RAN, smartphone, analytics, mobile shopping, 6CA, 6CC, carrier aggregation, Vodafone, Ericsson, AT&T, Nokia, Adobe, T-Mobile, Qualcomm, Deutsche Telekom AG (DT), 1&1

Industry trade group GSMA stated that more than 88,000 people attended its recent MWC Barcelona 2023 event, a number that might be hard to verify but seems legitimate considering the masses of people spread throughout the multiple halls of Barcelona's cavernous Gran Via. While attendance might not have matched the 109,000 people GSMA said had attended the last pre-Covid event in 2019, many in attendance were still amazed by the strong turnout for the mobile telecommunication industry's largest annual event. On this week's SDxCentral 7 Layers podcast, I am joined by Reporter Julia King to take a look back at the MWC Barcelona 2023 event, highlighting some of the bigger news and trends to emerge from the show. This includes: • The network API push highlighted by GSMA's Open Gateway initiative that has so far attracted nearly two-dozen operators and vendors attempting to squeeze more revenue from 5G networks. • The differing dynamics between vendor heavyweights Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia. Ericsson's event splash was somewhat subdued due to ongoing operational challenges; Huawei looked to counter ongoing geopolitical struggles with sheer mass; and Nokia deconstructed its logo to emphasis its operating momentum. • There was considerable open radio access network (RAN) news from the event, especially from European-based operators that have been aggressively trialing different open RAN solutions and have staked out deployment benchmarks. • And what would a telecom focused event be without looking toward the future. In this case, it was expected benefits from soon-to-be-available 5G-Advanced specifications and further-down-the-road 6G technology. We are still at least a year away from the former, and at least five years away from the latter, but what fun is a trade show if you can't dream a little.
