“We're fighting to make the world less boring. Our planet used to slap us about the face-cheeks with iron fists of adventure every day. Maps had edges to walk off. Whole continents lay undiscovered. But now, the entire surface of the Earth has been scanned by satellites and shoveled into your mobile phone, tagged with twattery about which restaurant serves the best mocha-latte-frappeshite. We live to find ways to make the world a bit more difficult. To bring chaos into our over-sanitized lives. To create adventures where you don't know what will happen tomorrow or if you'll even make it. Because we think there's no greater moment than those seconds as you leap into an abyss of uncertainty and disaster.” Tom Morgan, The Adventurists This is how a group called The Adventurists describe themselves, and today we're speaking with one of their founders about the trip that inspired it all. It's called the Mongol Rally, and the premise is to drive from London to Mongolia, in a car that costs not much more than a cup of tea, with no plan and no back up. In this day and age, with the technology we have in our pocket, there's a tendency to plan things out to the nth degree. The Adventurists offer an important counterpoint to that. Maybe adventure should have an element of risk? Maybe embracing the unknown is an essential part of exploration? What if we're denying ourselves something important in our over-sanitized lives? Today's guests Jenny Hunter talks about this and lots more, as she takes us 10,000 miles from a bar in Shoreditch to Ulaanbaatar. SIGN UP FOR CHAOS Believe it or not, you can actually do the Mongol Rally yourself, as well as a bunch of other mad cap adventures. Check out theadventurists.com to find out more. Alastair is an author, Narrator, Adventurist, and Double Lung Transplant recipient. Alastair immigrated to Canada from England by himself when he was 19. He became a typical yuppie – family, a house in the suburbs, and a big job in the corporate sector. Following London Life's Freedom 55 plan – he retired at 57 and went to live in the country. Disillusioned with retirement's passivity, he shed his material possessions and lived for two years with a small First Nations band in a remote fly-in location in the Northwest Territories. Cultural differences and a challenging environment ignited in him fresh perspectives, and inspired a new way of being, and fueled his soul searching. The experience changed the direction of his life, which he wrote about in his memoir Awakening in the Northwest Territories. He left the north two years later and, motivated to help others, went to Bangladesh on a two-year assignment as an International Development volunteer. With his new partner, Candas Whitlock, they next went to Jamaica and Guyana as International Development volunteers on one-year assignments. They co-wrote Go For It: Volunteering Adventures on Roads Less Traveled. Two years later, between volunteering assignments, they spent four months backpacking Central America and Southeast Asia and co-wrote Budget Backpacking for Boomers. They were part of a Reconciliation Canada project. In 2016, they went to Alert Bay, B.C., on a four-month volunteer placement with the Namgis First Nations. This was part of a Reconciliation Canada project. The experience was so profound that they felt compelled to write about it in a memoir entitled Tides of Change. Candas and Alastair became entertainers for the next three years, presenting their audio/visual shows based on their books to audiences in retirement residences, service clubs, libraries, and community centers throughout Ontario. Alastair's double lung transplant in 2020 enabled him to finish writing his novel The Soldier and the Orphan and narrate it as an audiobook. While narrating his other books (his three memoirs), he learned that there is a demand for his type of voice–senior male with a British accent – as a narrator and voice-over artist. Alastair has three children and seven grandchildren and lives in London, Ontario. Canada. Mann's impressive military biography includes being a decorated combat veteran; Corpsman; SEAL Special Operations Technician; jungle survival, desert survival, and arctic survival instructor; small arms weapons instructor, foreign weapons instructor, armed and unarmed defense tactics, advanced hand-to-hand combat instructor; and Survival, Evade, Resistance and Escape Instructor; in addition to other credentials. Mann is the author of 22 books including the New York Times Best Selling autobiography Inside SEAL Team SIX: My Life and Missions with America's Elite Warriors. When Osama bin Laden was assassinated, the entire world was fascinated by the men who had completed the seemingly impossible mission that had dogged the U.S. government for over a decade. SEAL Team SIX became synonymous with heroism, duty, and justice. Only a handful of the elite men who make up the SEALs, the U.S. Navy's best and bravest, survive the legendary and grueling selection process that leads to SEAL Team SIX, a group so classified it technically does not even exist. There are no better warriors on earth. Mann knows what it takes to be a brother of these ultra-selective fraternities. As a member of SEAL Team SIX he worked in countless covert operations, operating from land, sea, and air, and facing shootings, decapitations, and stabbings. He was captured by the enemy and lived to tell the tale, and he participated in highly classified missions all over the globe, including Somalia, Panama, El Salvador, Colombia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. As a training coordinator for several civilian SEAL training programs, and as a former Training Officer of SEAL Team SIX, he was directly responsible for shaping the bodies and minds of SEALs who carried out the assassination of Osama bin Laden as well as many other classified missions. But to become a SEAL, Mann had to overcome his own troubled childhood and push his body to its breaking point–and beyond. At the podium and in Inside SEAL Team SIX, he shares a high-octane narrative of physical and mental toughness, giving unprecedented insight to the inner workings of the training and secret missions of the world's most respected and feared combat unit. Don Mann has over 40 years (1,000+ races) worth of competitive racing experience, completed 2 Ironman triathlons in a day and was once ranked 38th in the world as a triathlete. Mann received a Master's in Management from Troy State University, in Troy, AL, a B.S. in International Relations & Criminal Justice, from Florida State University, in Tallahassee, FL, and a B.S. in Liberal Science, from State University of New York. He lives in Cape Charles, VA.

This week, we're digging into the Armchair Explorer archives to bring you one of our favorite - and most ridiculous - stories. If Monty Python went on a road trip, this is what it would be. Follow along with journalist Simon Parker as he travels 2,500-miles and two weeks across the length of India … ...in a rickshaw. You read that right. The rickshaw is perhaps the least suitable vehicle on the planet for long distance travel. Used commonly across many parts of Asia, it's basically a three-wheeled moped with a roof on it and room for a couple of passengers to squash in the backseat. It has no sides. It falls over often. It's essentially a glorified lawn mower. Dreamt up by a load of nutters called The Adventurists, the Rickshaw Run is all about challenging yourself with proper adventure, whilst belly-laughing at your own ridiculousness at the same time. Simon and four of his friends traveled from the far reaches of northern India, in the shadow of the Himalayas, all the way to the steamy jungles of Kerala on the southern coast. There was no set route. No pre-planned stops or hotels. No convoy or safety car or back up of any kind. Smart phones are scoffed at; Google maps are barred. They simply set off with a pocket map of India and a vague sense of where the finish line was. What would happen in between? Nobody was certain - that was the point. FIND SIMON AND THE ADVENTURISTS Follow Simon's work and see his photography on his website, SimonWParker.co.uk, or on Instagram and social media @SimonWiParker. Considering a rickshaw run yourself? This yarn is part 1 of a 2 part episode with extreme solo adventurist Mike Atkinson. Some may know him as Outback Mike from Alone Australia season 1, however Mikes story runs far deeper than that.Part 1 we learn of Mikes monumental solo expedition where he hand carved a 5 meter dug out canoe from a huge hoop pine tree (worked full time on it for 14 months) before sailing it solo 1500 kms to the tip of Australia via Cape York living off nothing but the land using 1840's equipment. Mikes inspiration for the extreme adventure came from early Australian settler James Morrill, who survived a 42-day sea voyage off the Queensland Coast in 1846.This incredible story of dedication, skill and mental resilience against all odds is nothing short of amazing and will inspire others to chase their dreams. Mike also shares his transition from fast jet military pilot to extreme solo adventure film maker and shares some of the survival skills he learned from his time in the military. This is his story. Author Richard Butner joins the show to celebrate his marvelous first book, The Adventurists and Other Stories (Small Beer Press). We get into the F&SF story that started him on the writing path, his love of the Fantastic in fiction, his background in engineering & how he has to throw it out the window when it comes to writing, and the theme of return that runs through his stories and the unfinished business it implies. We also talk about his history with Sycamore Hill Writers Workshop & how he ended up running it, how critiquing others' stories can teach you more than having your own work critiqued, and his love of the short story as a form. Plus we discuss writing & performing theater and how he balances that collaborative art with the solo process of writing, his experience in immersive theater, the impact of Kurt Cobain's suicide on him & his friends, my observation that changed the way he sees his stories, and a lot more. Bertrand Piccard is a psychiatrist and explorer and made history by accomplishing two aeronautical firsts – flying around the world non-stop in a balloon, and more recently in a solar-powered airplane without fuel. As Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation, he has succeeded in his mission to select 1000 profitable solutions to protect the environment and support clean growth. Some interesting insights from this episode: Meeting the astronauts as a kid opened his eyes that anyone with a passion who wanted to achieve their dreams could do it. When reflecting on his decision to become an explorer, he knew there had to be new frontiers yet to be discovered. “It's like a compass showing the unknown, showing what has never been done.” The writer Paulo Coelho once said: “If you believe that adventure is dangerous, try routine. It is deadly.” He would perform self-hypnosis to relax when stressed and stay awake and vigilant while flying through the night. “Our life depends on the way we think. Once we're aware of that, we're free to think in every direction.” Failing so quickly and in such a public way on his first around the world balloon attempt liberated him, as he learned to no longer care what others thought. Why did they succeed in the around the world balloon flight when so many others failed? They never failed twice for the same reason. It took 13 years to complete the around the world solar flight starting with the initial announcement. While there were moments of doubt, that doubt allowed them to continue to refine their approach, adjust course, and surmount obstacles along the way.
In episode 66, Roy laid a foundation for the Enneagram personality system, explaining its incredible importance and value. The Enneagram describes nine personality types, or nine faces of the ego and it is the deepest and most accurate personality system in the world today. Knowing your type allows you to uncover the unique way you sabotage yourself in relationship and what to do about it. In this episode, Roy goes into detail on the final three types: The Observer, The Loyalist and The Adventurist. Listen in and find out if this is your type and how it might be holding you back from “attracting lasting love.” For further study... Quite literally: of the 5,788 people to have summited Everest since Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary raised their flags there in 1953, just 653—around 8 percent—of climbers have been women.*And, Cokie Cox is one of them. Cokie's mantra over the last number of years has been "Perfect day". It's what she seeks, it's what she encourages others to pursue, and it's the message that she preaches. What if we all really did pursue every day a "perfect day" for us? How would life be different? How many regrets would be eliminated? Cokie doesn't sit around talking about her perfect day - she goes for it. Even if it means putting herself at insane risk in places like the side of a very large mountain. Listen in, this is a story sure to inspire! *(https://www.sidmartinbio.org/what-percentage-of-everest-climbers-are-women/)
