In this episode, JF and Phil continue their conversation on the wedge, their figure for the epistemological divide between approaching reality from the heart and exploring it with the mind. As the discussion unfolds, the wedge begins to reveal itself not as a rigid binary but as a spectrum—one that stretches from ultimate thickness to ultimate thinness. Could thinking, then, may be the art of navigating this epistemic gradient, seeking the sweet spot where the self meets the world, each on the other's terms? In this episode I am joined by Duncan Barford, occult practitioner, counsellor, and author of ‘Occult Experiments in the Home'. Duncan discusses his own journey into the occult including reality-bending experiments with Chaos Magick, invocation of his holy guardian angel, identifying and relating to entities, and meeting his long-time collaborator, the magician and spiritual teacher Alan Chapman. Duncan recalls his first encounter with Daniel Ingram's “Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha”. He explains how he combined Daniel's approach with Western occult methods and rituals to attain arhatship for himself. Duncan declared his enlightenment on the internet and began teaching awakening in a short-lived venture called “Open Enlightenment”. Duncan reflects on the strongly negative reactions that both his declaration and teaching project received. Duncan also comments on demonic affliction, both his own experiences as well as those of recent podcast guest Mattias Daly, the influence of social class and geographic location, navigating kundalini crisis, the intersection of mysticism and magick. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep265-occult-experiments-duncan-barford Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:19 - Occult experiments in the home 02:38 - Duncan comments on Mattias Daly's demonic affliction 04:34 - Demonic or kundalini awakening? 06:27 - - Duncan's own kundalini crisis 08:44 - Seeking guidance from Tara Springett 11:39 - Identifying entities 14:19 - Duncan's specialism in counselling those having unusual occult experiences 17:05 - Finding the best paradigm 19:38 - Does Duncan prescribe magickal practice? 21:50 - Spirituality vs everyday life 24:42 - Meeting Alan Chapman and sustained interest in the occult 26:59 - Invocation of the Holy Guardian Angel 27:57 - Encountering Daniel Ingram and bringing awakening back to magick 30:31 - Duncan's childhood interest in the supernatural and strange 33:13 - Gothic horror and psychoanalysis 33:52 - Beginning to explore magickal practice 35:03 - Moving from intellect to feeling and emotion 36:32 - Abandoning a PhD, meditation frustration, and life crisis 44:12 - Encountering Chaos Magick and leaning to bend reality 46:26 - Envy of Daniel Ingram and reception in the Chaos Magick community 49:40 - Are mysticism and spirituality compatible with magick? 51:09 - Using magick to induce mystical experiences 52:44 - Declaring arhatship and attaining the four paths 57:45 - Powerful experience with Andrew Cohen 01:01:43 - Advice from Christopher Titmuss 01:03:50 - Dreaming of Gary Numan 01:05:25 - Is arhatship the end of enlightenment? 01:07:09 - Duncan asks Steve's opinion 01:09:07 - Did Duncan and Alan keep pace in their awakening path? 01:10:03 - The 3 doors and awakening with visions 01:13:39 - Fire kasina retreat with Daniel Ingram 01:16:26 - Why did Duncan declare arhatship? 01:17:59 - Ego inflation through magickal practice 01:19:08 - Negative responses to declaration of enlightenment 01:19:54 - Failure of Open Enlightenment and the compulsion to share one's awakening 01:24:49 - Is UK conducive to spiritual and magickal work? 01:27:27 - Reflections on being working class 01:28:33 - Travellers vs locals 01:29:15 - Comments on the spectrum of entities 01:31:09 - Discount code for the Baptist Head Compendium

The Hanged Man is arguably the most enigmatic card in the traditional tarot deck. Divested of any archetypal apparel – he is neither emperor nor fool, but just a man, who happens to be hanging – he gazes back at us with the look of one who harbors a secret. But what sort of secret? In this episode, JF and Phil discuss the card that no less august a personage than A.E. Waite, co-creator of the classic Rider-Waite deck, claimed was beyond all understanding. The musical interludes in this episode are from Pierre-Yves Martel's recent album, "Bach." VYS0039 | Try Not To Be A Dick Shall Be The Whole Of The Law - Vayse to Face with Duncan Barford - Show Notes After a 3 month break, Vayse returns for an interview with a person who inspired the podcast before it was even a podcast - writer, podcaster and psychodynamic psychotherapeutic counsellor, Duncan Barford. Duncan's book Occult Experiments in the Home was a major influence on Hine and Buckley's views on magick and mysticism but for this interview they zero in on aspects of his career as a therapist, focusing on mental health and how this can affect and be affected by the occult and occult practices: Why do so many prominent figures in magick seem to have mental health issues or addictions? Where do you draw the line between mystical experience and mental health disorder? How do you maintain a magical practice when your mental health isn't good? Is it safe to have a magical practice at all? and most importantly... what kind of deep-seated psychological damage is preventing Hine from remembering the name of Duncan's new book? (Recorded 12 June 2024). S3E16 - For the Glory KC is back with the 81st episode of the show! Sort of... [This is a weird request, but if this is the first time you've ever listened to the podcast, don't. There are some audio issues, and I wouldn't want to leave you with a bad impression. Sheena and I's audio tracks are out of sync and I'm responding to things she said, but she hasn't said them yet because of a delay. We recorded on Sunday night, and she hasn't had time to re-record. We polled Twitter and they said release it, so here you go!] Sporting Kansas City ended their homestand leaving us wanting more. We commiserated on what went wrong on the goals as well as what went right on the ones Sporting KC scored. But we simply can't avoid discussing Peter Vermes' somewhat stunning postgame comments after the draw against St. Louis City SC. He either thinks the media, or the fans, are too worried about not closing out games. But he isn't worried. Wild! We have thoughts! Then, much like PV snuck into his presser, Sporting KC were playing against more than just St. Louis City. He didn't say it, but he meant the referees. It was one of the worst officiated games in recent memory. Alan Chapman called ticky tack fouls early, nothing for a huge stretch, then back to the ticky tack at the end. Inconsistent. 21 fouls to St. Louis. No yellows during the run of play. No persistent infringement. Either let them be physical or don't. And Taylor Twellman, noted St. Louis native, and about everyone else who isn't a St. Louis mark thought this Klauss challenge on Willy Agada was a foul. But Chapman saw nothing in it, immediately calling it shoulder to shoulder, and a goal was scored right after. I will say, this gif some St. Louis fan made was pretty amazing. Thanks goodness there are other KC soccer teams though. The Kansas City Current continued their winning ways with a 5-2 thrashing of Bay FC. Sheena has found her favorite KC Current player and it's an embarrassment of riches on that talented team. In sad news from the game, Alex Loera announced she tore her ACL against her former club and will miss the rest of the season. In the Digital Crawl, we hit a few topics, including: When Sporting KC can sign players next SKC's trip to Union Omaha for the US Open Cup Ozzie Cisneros going out on loan SKC II's game and a signing Loera's ACL tear Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): I Refereed a game! - 2:08 SKC/St. Louis atmosphere, chants, tifos and a draw - 6:10 Peter Vermes thinks we're too worried about the blown leads - 22:49 PRO: Consistently Inconsistent - 34:34 Kortne Ford retires - 47:16 Thank God for the KC Current - 50:39 Competing KC soccer events - 1:04:26 What is the MLS Icon rule? - 1:10:24 Digital Crawl - 1:13:15 Upcoming Schedule: KC Current at Angel City FC - Friday, April 26th @ 9:00 PM Sporting KC at Minnesota United - Saturday, April 27th @ 7:30 PM KC Comets vs. Chihuahua Savage - Sunday, April 28th @ 4:05 PM Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on "Listener Support." S2E42 - For the Glory KC is back with the 49th episode of the show! I have never once cared about this silly Soccer Capital nonsense, but because it eats at St. Louis, much like Sporting Kansas City, I'm going to lean in hard when these games are played each time. We talk about Round Two in this budding rivalry, and Sporting KC's big win. The atmosphere was amazing (full credit to the road fans), the game was exciting, and the refereeing definitely happened. Peter Vermes said he thought Alan Chapman officiated the game well. We'll have to agree to disagree on that one Peter. I'll cite my sources. It's not all SKC as the KC Current get some (negative) attention. Their season isn't officially over, but the loss against Angel City all but assures it is. There is still plenty to play for in this week's Challenge Cup semifinal and (hopefully) final. But after that, it's time to pick a permanent coach. We discuss.  Plus, we dig deeper on the Jenni Hermoso/Luis Rubiales controversy, talk international windows (including Miami's brutal list of absences) and much more! Happy Wednesday, guys. Let me take you back to 12 months ago, to the couch where it all started. It was the morning of May 5 th , 2021. I made the decision that I would change my life. I decided that the life I was living of instant gratification is over and it's time for a change. Those changes at the time were massive mindset shifts for me. When I was kicked out of my ex's apartment with my clothes and belongings, I knew that that moment in my life wouldn't change unless I did. One of the first things I did was tell every person I partied with drugs, that I am focusing on bettering myself. I cut off all toxic relationships. The second thing I did, was I joined Apex in which I found a community of people who wanted to be more than average and excel in everything that they did. I surrounded myself with winners. The third and most important is I met Marlon Lockyear, Sam Kehayias, and Alan Chapman, who saw the vision for Limitless Coaching. I learned from the best and I was always a student. The funny thing is, Limitless Coaching was second on my priorities as I started a real estate investment firm with Charles Rezac. Soon, you find what you are truly passionate about and for me, that's seeing people believing in themselves as someone had a belief in me. When I first started, I didn't know everything and you never will. The only thing I knew, that as long as I continued to be consistent, disciplined, and listened that in time my vision would become a reality. For those of you just starting your journey, I soon learned, not everyone will understand you. Not everyone will support you. Not everyone will agree with you, but you're not everyone. Once you have a vision so big it scares people, you know you're doing something right.

On the night before this episode of Weird Studies was released, a bunch of folks on the Internet performed a collective magickal working. Prompted by the paranormal investigator Greg Newkirk, they watched the final episode of the documentary series Hellier at the same time -- 10:48 PM EST -- in order to see what would happen. Listeners who are familiar with this series, of which Newkirk is both a protagonist and a producer, will recall that the last episode features an elaborate attempt at gate opening involving no less than Pan, the Ancient Greek god of nature. If we weren't so cautious (and humble) in our imaginings, we at Weird Studies might consider the possibility that this episode is a retrocausal effect of that operation. In it, we discuss the show that took the weirdosphere by storm last year, touching on topics such as subterranean humanoids, the existence of "Ascended Masters," Aleister Crowley's secret cipher, the Great God Pan, and the potential dangers of opening gates to other worlds ... or of leaving them closed. In the paper discussed in this episode, Phil Ford coins the term "diviner's time" to denote a particular feeling that will be familiar to anyone who has engaged in divinatory or magical practice, namely the feeling that it all means something, that the universe, with all its chaos and randomness, nevertheless contains -- or is itself -- a kind of music. This episode goes deep down the rabbit hole as Phil and JF try to wrap their heads around conceptions of time, causality, and meaning that are very different from our usual understanding of those terms. Alan Chapman is a Western magick practitioner, and the author of the newly released book, Advanced Magick for Beginners. Alan found his way into the field of Chaos magick through the work of Aleister Crowley and since has worked with a powerful technique called “the Holy Guardian Angel,” which very much like the guru yoga techniques of the Vajrayana schools, allows one to surrender to an external guide on the path to enlightenment. Alan shares with us the details of the Western occult tradition, including its core purpose of enlightenment, which he calls “the great work” of magick. He also connects some of the spiritual practices of magick with the Buddhist maps and models. Finally, he shares with us some of the details of a project he has recently launched called Open Enlightenment, whose purpose is to promote a transparent and open discussion surrounding the nature of enlightenment throughout the world’s mystical traditions. In this episode we discuss gods and aliens and the ideas surrounding Ancient Astronaut Theory. Do you believe in extra-terrestrials? Do you think they visited and helped ancient human civilizations? Are you a supporter of Ancient Astronaut Theory? If your answer is a resounding YES, then this episode is not for you, because I take a look into some of the propositions made by Ancient Astronaut Theorists and offer my thoughts on the matter which may not jive with you and your alien putty, but do not worry there is always Stonehenge! Later in the episode, I discuss the only alien abduction case I have helped with as a paranormal investigator. Hear the details as I share my diagnosis and methods of addressing the issue in my effort to help a friend. In A Corner in the Occult we learn about Lam, Aleister Crowley’s favorite martian, as well as the Typhonian Order which focuses on working and communication with extra-terrestrial entities, The Great Old Ones, as well as some of the darker aspects of metaphysics. We hear a track from our featured artist and future guest Alka, an electronic music composer who incorporates magick, occultism, and estoric practices and systems into his music making process. We discuss evocation in the Essence of Magick. I read listener email and talk about James Randi. We see which two lucky listeners won copies of Etched Offerings, and to close we ponder the origin of deity. This episode is really out of this world!
