Professor Carrie Lambert-Beatty is a contemporary art historian. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of History of Art and Architecture and the Department of Art, Film and Visual Studies at Harvard. She's the author of some of the most influential arts writing of the 21st century, including the award-winning book Being Watched, Yvonne Rainer in the 1960s and the essay, Make Believe: Parafiction and Plausibility (pdf). Carrie is also a co-editor at the illustrious arts theory journal October. Her current research is on 30 years of fiction presented as fact in contemporary art, asking what happens when artworks deceive their audiences? What do the experiences of artists' trickery teach about contemporary ways of knowing? Driller Killer's Back! But He's Different...It was inevitable with the successes of The Slumber Party Massacre and Slumber Party Massacre II that Roger Corman would want a third film made. Again, he chose to have a female writer and female director which is a nice change from the norm – particularly for the era. But why does this one feel separate from the first two? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we conclude our Slumber Party Massacre series with a conversation about Sally Mattison's 1990 film Slumber Party Massacre III.Here's a hint at what we talk about.This film drops any connection to the story and characters from the first two films. Why? Where do we then find connective tissue in this trilogy? Is it just because we have a killer with a drill? It seems thin. And the fact that we have characters named the same from the first film just isn't enough. We miss the parody elements and feminist approach too. It feels like they decided to just make a straight-up slasher film. They even go so far as to give the killer what feels like tropey psychological damage from sexual abuse suffered as a child at the hands of his uncle. It could've been interesting, but they only add just enough to make it feel cliche. It's fairly disappointing.Regardless, it still gives us plenty to discuss. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. But is feeling safe the same as feeling protected? Why does this difference matter? Serenity is Flow | 9:09 It's the inner flow of creativity, where we are drawn to what interests us, not what we should do to fit in or be accepted. Serenity is Surrender | 9:29 In many ways, serenity is the absence of pursuit. So if we search for it, it disappears. It's a sense of peace in the present. It's about HOW we go, do, and be, rather than WHERE we go, WHAT we do, and WHO we are. Serenity is Acceptance | 10:39 Disturbances are inevitable in life. Serenity allows space for an authentic reaction to the noise. While simultaneously holding space to pick from an ever-expanding library of potential responses we have chosen to build. Serenity is an Inner Home| 11:12 Like a home that comes with us wherever we go, it's something we grow, nurture, and reinforce within ourselves. It's built from the inside out with acceptance, connection, meaning, creativity (a spirit of expansion and possibility), and playfulness (inviting the time to stop and engage unproductively). Serenity is The Calm After a Storm | 12:26 Serenity is that feeling afterwards when everything is out. The emotions can be named, held, and let go. The clouds can disperse and dissipate. Serenity is not just the calm after the storm; it's surrender to the storm itself. It knows that to process life, sometimes a storm needs to happen. The Difference Between Serenity and Tranquility | 14:00 Serenity helps peace flow from the inside to the outside. Tranquility aims to invite peace from the outside to the inside.
QR codes are not inherently dangerous. They're effectively links we can click in the real world using the camera app on our phone. Like hyperlinks on a web page, QR code "links" can take you to good websites or bad websites. They can also disguise their ultimate destination by using URL shortening services like bitly or owly. But now "free" QR code generator websites - that is, sites that will let you create one of these QR codes by entering the HTTP link you want it to take people to - are using these redirects to basically hold your QR code for ransom. The QR codes they give you use the redirect links to insert themselves into the middle - and after some time, they will stop working until you subscribe and pay them money. If you've already printed these codes on hundreds of business cards or dozens of plaques for your restaurant, they they've really got you over a barrel. I'll help you avoid these scams. The new Hollywood film “Judas and the Black Messiah” is based on the lives of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and the person who betrayed him, FBI informant William O'Neal. The film's director Shaka King has credited documentaries for playing a key role in his research. One of his main influences was “Eyes on the Prize II” (1990) that scored the journalistic feat of interviewing O'Neal after he had gone into a federal witness protection program. In Episode 4 we meet with Filmmaker Assia Boundoui and human rights attorney Christina Abraham to discuss the award-winning documentary "The Feeling of Being Watched". After spending the beginning of her career as a journalist for BBC, VICE, and CNN, Assia discusses her transition to filmmaker and her first project—looking into the FBI surveillance of her own Bridgeview, Illinois community. Assia takes us through her investigation, including uncovering tens of thousands of FBI documents proving that her Arab-American community was the subject of one of the largest counterterrorism investigations, code-named “Operation Vulgar Betrayal”, conducted on U.S. soil before 9/11. She then leads us on her journey to end the government’s secrecy over their four decade investigation and discusses the impact that constant surveillance – something Big Tech is racing to make happen -- has on individuals. Is Judge Richard Posner correct when he argued that “privacy is mainly about trying to improve your social and business opportunities by concealing the sorts of bad activities that would cause other people not to want to deal with you?” Or does being constantly monitored take away some quintessential truth about the American experience?

Sociologist Associate Professor Gavin Smith’s day looks like that of most other academics. He delivers lectures, does research, answers emails. The afternoon is when his day departs from the norm. That’s when he’ll go off to handle a snake that someone has found in their laundry or backyard.Here, Gavin talks about how he got into snake-catching, the connection he has with these feared and misunderstood creatures, and the snake-related sociological research he’s embarking on.Associate Professor Gavin J.D. Smith is the Deputy Head of the ANU School of Sociology where he researches the complex nature of tracking cultures in health, penal, work and familial contexts. This project is founded on conceptual ideas he has published in his monograph *Opening the Black Box: The Work of Watching* (2015, Routledge) and in influential papers such as Surveillance, Data and Embodiment: On the Work of Being Watched and Data Doxa. A key focus of his work is the examination of how people differentially experience forms of surveillance: from the perspective of watching and being watched. In his spare time he is a licensed snake catcher and educator with ACT Snake Removals.
