Tonight on Trackside, we recap a thrilling and historic Indianapolis 500! Curt and Kevin give all the details on Josef Newgarden's second 500 win in a row, the last lap pass on Pato O'Ward, details you may have missed, and more! Kevin and Curt delve into the TV ratings, and what caused them to shoot up the way they did. They talk about the likelihood of moving the start time later, and how that wouldn't be a good idea, and how accurate weather predictions were the day before the race. Later in the the first hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about how historically impressive it was for Josef to win two in a row, the first time since Helio Castroneves in 2002. They go over some historical stats to show how important the race was in the history of the 500, and how Newgarden is the first American to win back-to-back since Al Unser in 1970-71. They also hit on the fact that Dixon has led more Indy 500s than anyone. To round out the first hour, Kevin talks about Stewart-Haas shutting the doors of their NASCAR team. They talk about what may happen to the drivers on the team, and if Haas plans on leaving F1 and if Andretti will buy the F1 team to get on the grid. In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk about if the race was one of the best ever. Regardless, the fans were entertained. They talk about the red flags during the race last year, and how this year felt more natural and proper as the last part of the race had a long green flag stint. They talk about IndyCar drivers competing in NASCAR races, and the likelihood of more of these cross overs in the future. They also answer listener questions about why the race was so competitive and talk about Sting Ray Robb's performance. Later in the second hour, Kevin and Curt talk about Kyle Larson, and how he believes he let everyone down. We hear about the tug of war between Larson's NASCAR team and his IndyCar team. Larson has not received his waiver, and if he will come back next year to race after this year's let down. Kevin and Curt end the show going over what they missed and answering listener questions. 12-9-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program laughing at the baseball writers for their meltdowns over their attempt to cover the free agency of Shohei Ohtani. John breaks down the simplicity of what the writers are trying to do (be the first to report it). Is it really important? And John thinks it would be even more hilarious if Ohtani decided to return to play professional baseball in Japan. John brings up the first round of the MLB draft of 2014 and the NBA draft of 2020 and points out the similarity before spending a couple of minutes talking about the NBA In Season Tournament- why it is good for the sport and when teams should start putting up banners (if at all). During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about the National League (Baseball) prohibiting uniform numbers, the Heisman Trophy, the All American Football Conference and the Cleveland Browns, Frank Robinson, Old Hoss Radbourn, Dick Butkus, Kurt Angle, the fact that Rube Foster and Branch Rickey were equal baseball pioneers, Archie Moore, Al Unser, and Demaryius Thomas.
By the last race in the 1985 Indy Car Series, the drivers' championship had come down to a single point – between Al Unser and his son, Al Unser Jr. Al Unser Sr was already an accomplished racer, with 3 Indy 500's and two National Championship wins under his belt, whereas his son's career was just beginning, and a championship win would cement his place in the world of IndyCar racing. Al was faced with a unique decision – he could pass his rival to his third national championship, or keep his spot and let his son take the crown. It was at this moment that Al Unser Sr had to make a choice – was he a father or a racecar driver? But how did the Unser family earn their reputation in the world of automotive racing? What made them arguably the first family of Indy racing? And what does the future of racing hold for the new generation of Unsers? Today on Past Gas, we're talking about the Unser family. 4-19-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program talking about Draymond Green's unwillingness to respond to the fact that the league and its officials look at him as a problem. It did not matter that Green could have been right about his beef with Damontas Sabonis getting away with extra physical play. When Green stepped on Sabonis- his reputation alone was getting ejected and suspended, whether he was in the right initially or not. Green has to know this now and understand he is getting judged differently because of his reputation. Though he may have been right in his criticism of the officials treatment of Sabonis, he HAD to have known this was going to be the result of his actions at the expense of his own team and teammates. John then makes a case that most pitchers could be in a similar situation that Max Scherzer was in when he was ejected and eventually suspended for possibly rosin and water or sweat. John believes that MLB has to do a better job of ruling on exactly what can and cannot be part of the check between the umpire and the player and simply leave it up to the umpire to opine. During today's Saving Sports History segment, John talks about the first Boston Marathon and what led to it, two undefeated MLB teams after ten (10) plus games, Michael Spinks, Al Unser, Jr., Candace Parker, and Maria Sharapova.

Bob Brown on Al Unser Sr. celebration of life 5/27/22.
Mark Glover, the long-time Sacramento-based journalist, will continue his passion for motorsports this week. He will attend the Indy 500 for the 58th time. It will be a family affair. Glover's son will accompany his father for the 30th time. The 106th Indy 500 is scheduled May 29 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Glover is our guest on this episode of The Weekly Driver podcast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I talk with the Indy 500 historian about his legacy at the race, the event he first attended with his father when he was a young boy. Glover was also our guest on Episode #39 in 2018. We also talk with Glover in Episode #227 about iconic drivers. From four-time winner A.J. Foyt to Hélio Castroneves and his chances of breaking the career-win record shared by Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears. Indy 500: Veterans, Rookies Intriguing We also discuss changes in the race and its evolving cars, Mark's favorite drivers and memories from the race "I'm kind of chomping at the bit because I missed the two," says Glover, of the Covid-19 altered event. "Of course, no one could go in 2020; And last year, they didn't want you to go through airports and it was still shaky and I didn't go. "I am literally starving for my Indy 500 fix. What really intrigues me this year is the mix of veterans and young folks. You have some very capable older drivers, multiple winners of the race, names that are instantly recognizable throughout the field and then you have a lot of kids. Indy 500: Unknown Winner? "It is possible this time around that on Sunday race day you could have a winner, a young man who 98 percent of the sporting public has no idea who he is." Glover is also a long-time automotive columnist. Read his new car reviews and automotive features on his website AutoGlo. The 106th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled Sunday, May 29. Winning an IndyCar race is nothing new for Scott Dixon, particularly this year. But getting to celebrate as fans cheered him on for the first time all year made his victory at Road America particularly sweet."To see fans and hear fans cheering again was definitely a lot of fun," the 39-year-old New Zealander said after winning the opening race of a weekend doubleheader. This marked the third IndyCar event of this pandemic-delayed season — Dixon has won all three of them — and the first to admit fans. Spectators hadn't been permitted for Dixon's previous victories in Fort Worth and Indianapolis. Those fans got the opportunity to watch Dixon's most improbable triumph of the year.Dixon was a season-low ninth in qualifying and well off the lead pack for the first half of the race, but he took the lead for good shortly after a caution flag and beat Will Power by 2.5386 seconds. They were followed in order by Alex Palou, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Colton Herta."It was very unexpected," said Dixon, a five-time season champion for Chip Ganassi Racing.Dixon is the first IndyCar driver to start a season with at least three consecutive victories since Sebastien Bourdais reeled off four straight to start the 2006 campaign. The only other drivers to open an IndyCar season with at least three straight victories are A.J. Foyt (seven in 1964) and Al Unser (three in 1971). Dixon is the first driver to win three straight races at any point in the season since Simon Pagenaud in 2016.Power had a narrow lead over Dixon when Jack Harvey went off the track to produce a caution flag on the 38th lap. Dixon pulled ahead of Power coming out of the pits on the restart and stayed ahead after two more caution flags."Mishap in the pits, had a bit of an issue," Power said. "Had a wrong gear in the car, too, making it difficult to get a good restart to challenge Dixon."Dixon has 49 career victories, putting him behind only Foyt (67) and Mario Andretti (52).The second race of the doubleheader gets underway at 4.00am tomorrow morning.

Two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr joined me in May to discuss the 1989 race where he came incredibly close to earning his first victory before a clash with Emerson Fittipaldi sent his Galles Racing Lola-Chevy into the Turn 3 wall. The incident, and his unfathomable response to Fittipaldi after climbing from the battered car is, as he shares, no less remarkable 30 years after it took place. Power dominated the Grand Prix of Portland on September 1, leading 52 laps to score the 37th victory of his career. That ties him with four-time Champ Car Series champion Sebastien Bourdais for sixth on the all-time victory list. Next up is Al Unser, with 39 wins. The Portland win was the second of the season, all coming within the last three races. RACEDAY's Bruce Martin caught up with Power after the race to talk about that and other topics on today's Honda IndyCar Report.

Howard Holley Presents Against All Odds: How Successful People Overcome Adversity
Rick Rinaman's entrée into the world of Indy car racing came by way of racing go-carts outside of Pittsburgh, PA and carrying tools for Paul Newman's engine builder. Eventually, he landed an entry level, truck-driving position for Penske Racing in Reading, PA. From there, Rick went on to be one of the most successful Chief Mechanics/Crew Chiefs for Indy 500 winning teams that included Helio Castoneves, Emerson Fittipaldi, Al Unser, and Rick Mears. Rick had great successes while with Penske, but he did not achieve success on his own. In 2009, Castroneves said of his crew, “Some of those guys have been here 10 years. They know my style; they know what I like, and they know what I don’t like. But the good news is that we’re a team. We lose together; we win together." In this interview, Rick shares his thoughts on the importance of teamwork, and he reminds us all that sometimes failure just isn't an option.
