The Hamilton Today Podcast with Scott Thompson: Coming up on April now, and who will be the great April fool? According to the feds, it's those who drink! 6.2% increase in taxes on beer and spirits set for April 1st. In a recent piece that ran in the Hamilton Spectators, some local microbreweries – like Fairweather Brewing – are saying it won't have any marketable impact on their product, even if they are not happy with the tax existing. But that may come down to a personal choice for the businesses. Franco Terrazzano of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation gives Scott the skinny. Dr. Ian Lee, Sprott School of Business, helps Scott answer the question of how will China's relations – particularly business relations – with Canada and other nations change due to their strengthening ties with Russia, a nation whose leader now has an ICC arrest warrant hanging over his head? Telford to testify!! That's the breaking news this afternoon out of the ongoing story of potential foreign interference by the CCP. Tim Powers of Summa Strategies has his piece ready for Scott. It is all coming up on the Hamilton Today Podcast! Guests: Franco Terrazzano, Canadian Taxpayer Federation Federal Director. This is through the involvement of guests from the world of music, art, literature, science, etc... Vedanta is not a religion. Vedanta is a philosophy, the Mother of all world philosophies and religions. The Bhagavad Gita is the most representative text of Vedanta, one of the most widely read books ever. We celebrate the teachings of the eminent philosopher Swami Parthasarathy (he is 96 years old) who founded the organization Vedanta Global, and who has authored numerous best sellers including Vedanta Treatise - The Eternities and the invaluable commentary on the Bhagavad Gita. Training the Brain: Sensory Substitution

On Tech & Vision With Dr. Cal Roberts

This podcast is about big ideas on how technology is making life better for people with vision loss. Today's big idea centers on the place where big ideas get born — the human brain. In today's episode, Dr. Roberts and his guests explore theories of brain plasticity, sensory substitution, and sensory augmentation. Dr. Patricia Grant discusses the BrainPort, which uses sensory substitution in this case, the nerve fibers in the tongue, to send information to the brain instead of the optic nerve. Dr. John-Ross Rizzo is developing a device to be called the Sensory Halo, which is supported by sensory augmentation. Both guests share what is being learned about sensory substitution and augmentation through these technologies and how this understanding will help perfect future devices to enable people with vision impairment to see better.   The Big Takeaways: The BrainPort is a headset device with a camera that picks up visual input as the eyes would. It uses the theory of sensory substitution by sending stimulation to the nerve fibers on the tongue. The device picks up visual formation in grayscale imagery: lighter areas of the images produce high stimulation on the tongue, while dark areas produce none. This contrast allows users to identify objects in their environment. The BrainPort device is meant for people who are blind so it's not crowding out a person's residual vision. And surprisingly, both users who are congenitally blind and users who have seen before and have a visual memory — have performed the same in clinical trials.  This shows that users are not experiencing a memory of sight. They are learning to interpret the camera's image through stimulating the nerve fibers on their tongue. In the future, there are opportunities for collaboration between BrainPort and other technologies to continue to enhance the user experience to create more autonomy. Another device being developed that draws on some aspects of sensory augmentation is the Sensory Halo. Using a device with sensory augmentation is more intuitive to use than a device that uses sensory substitution. The Sensory Halo is designed to empower the wearer by delivering key pieces of information to safely and independently navigate their environment.   Tweetables: “We put the brain port on him and started training him, and we were doing some mobility tasks...And I was walking around the room and he would just scan the room. Then all of a sudden, I could feel when he perceived me.” — Dr. Patricia Grant “The great thing about the BrainPort is that it gives a person their own sense. It's something that they can experience on their own, and that is of great value to a person who is blind.” — Dr. Patricia Grant “Simply put, I just want to amplify your existing senses and augment what I can give to you right now so that you can have a richer experience.” — Dr. John-Ross Rizzo   Contact Us: Contact us at podcasts@lighthouseguild.org with your innovative new technology ideas for people with vision loss.   Pertinent Links: Lighthouse Guild BrainPort Assistive Technology & Advanced Wearables by John-Ross Rizzo, MD, MSCI   Guest Bios: Patricia Grant, PhD, Director of Clinical Research, Wicab, Inc. Dr. Grant joined Wicab, Inc. as Director of Clinical Research in February 2014. She previously served as Co-Investigator for Wicab's FDA clinical trial and currently serves as the Principal Investigator of a clinical trial, funded by the US Department of Defense, investigating the safety and efficacy of the BrainPort for people who have been blinded by traumatic injury. Her future research goals include demonstrating the value of the BrainPort in the workplace, in addition to teaching spatial concepts to children. Prior to joining Wicab, Dr. Grant was the Director of Research at the Chicago Lighthouse for People Who Are Blind and Visually Impaired and a Research Specialist in the Low Vision Research and the Applied Physics laboratories in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition to her work at Wicab, Dr. Grant has contributed to research in the areas of methods for assessing loss of vision due to retinal disease, treatments to optimize remaining vision, the psychological effects of vision loss, and the measurement of retinal image quality and ocular aberration. She earned a BA in Psychology, an MS in Public Health Sciences, and PhD from the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, with a concentration in behavioral science and eye health promotion.   John-Ross (JR) Rizzo, MD, MSCI, Director of Innovation and Technology, Assistant Professor Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and Department of Neurology, NYU Langone Medical Center John-Ross (JR) Rizzo, MD, MSCI, is a physician-scientist at NYU Langone Medical Center. Jessica Young, PhD is a biostatistician in the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School who joins the show to discuss the ins and outs of her interesting and important work. Tune in to learn the following: How confounding factors in a study can influence the findings of the study, and how/why the gold standard of randomized trials can address this What is meant by the “fundamental challenge of causal inference” and how this explains why assumptions are always necessary in order to claim that a statistical analysis is unbiased Why large subject numbers or data points can't overwhelm biases; why bias is a function of the thing being studied Dr. Young's job is two-fold: she works on both the applications of statistical methods for public health and clinical medicine, and also on the development of methods in these areas. She focuses on causal inference, which is the formal process of understanding how to estimate causal effect from data collected in real-world studies. Through examples including a longitudinal study on nurses starting in the 1970s to present day studies revolving around the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Young discusses confounding factors in studies and the effect they have on interpretations of findings, the importance of randomization, the presence of bias regardless of how statistically significant a finding is, meta-analyses, where she sees the field of biostatistics heading in the near future, and more.   To learn about the basics of causal inference, Dr. Young recommends reading The Book of Why: The New Science of Cause and Effect. Karen L. Lee, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology, NYU Langone, delivers an overview of her important work in the fields of neurology and sleep medicine.   Dr. Lee holds board certifications from the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (Sleep Medicine), 2013, and the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (Neurology), 2012. At NYU Langone, she specializes in treating patients who suffer from sleep disorders.    Dr. Lee discusses her background in neurology and her personal story. During her extensive medical studies, she found the study of sleep to be particularly fascinating from a neurological perspective. As she explains, while you might think of sleep as a shutting down period, there are actually many important processes taking place during our sleep.   Dr. Lee talks about sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. As she explains, restless leg syndrome is sometimes hard to diagnose because many people who suffer from it have difficulty truly describing exactly how it affects them, but it typically manifests in discomfort, either in the legs, possibly arms as well, or other parts of the body. She discusses the many ways that sufferers describe it, like discomfort or a tingling sensation, a prickly feeling, or soreness. She explains when it often occurs and talks about treatment options, and how many people experience relief by moving their legs, though relief may be only temporary.    Dr. Lee details sleep apnea and explain how it affects the upper airways. She elaborates on the symptoms and treatments, and the many options for apnea sufferers. Poor quality sleep is related to multiple conditions and various diseases, such as stroke, anxiety and depression, headaches, poor concentration, chronic pain, heart disease, dementia, obesity, hypertension, and more.   Dr. Lee has a keen interest in treating patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, and other disorders related to sleep.

In this week's episode, Michael and Cornell PhD Candidate Van Mai Tran sit down with Erin Lin, Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University, to chat about her research into the legacy of US bombing from the Vietnam War on the land and agriculture in Cambodia, and the ways that different groups within Cambodia deal with the effects of undetonated bombs on fertile rice paddies in their country. Using a dataset of declassified US Air Force records and an agricultural survey of over 3,600 rice paddies across Cambodia, I show that in highly fertile soil, this mechanical failure still poses risk from the unexploded ordnance, and farmers are deterred from efficiently using their land.
