Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 10 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. This week Catalyst features an interview with the founder of the Blueprint Stan Experience, Maya Kaspi. Kaspi, a veteran of the music industry, has created the Blueprint Stan Experience to be a fan events, fan services, and fan marketing company dedicated to amplifying the enjoyment of the fan experience. Interviewing Kaspi this week is Emily Paris. Emily discusses with Maya how she first started in the music industry as a digital marketer working at Crowd Surf for one of her favorite bands. The two also talk about how Maya's early experiences combined with her desire for inclusivity, safety, reward, and excitement for music led her to create the Blueprint Stan Experience. The two touch on the subject of fandom in terms of driving the creative and cultural industries and how fans can be utilized as such for social change. To wrap up the interview Kaspi discusses how she is trying through the Blueprint Stan Experience to provide opportunities for fans to be actively involved, engaged, and appreciated in this industry while making music and concerts more accessible to fans of all walks of life.

In the context of influencer marketing, there's a big difference between an influencer and a celebrity. My definition of that difference has always been that an influencer is someone who built an audience on social media by creating content on social media. A celebrity is someone who built an audience on social media because of something else. They're an actor. Or singer. Or politician. Or athlete.  Social media content is not their primary thing.  Now, before I go further, let me circle back to the very premise of this show and my approach to influence marketing. An influencer, broadly defined, is someone who can persuade an audience to take action. That can be someone offline. Not on social media. But for the sake of this discussion, we're confining the definition to a social media influencer.  So celebrities have big audiences on social media, but not necessarily because of their social media. However, celebrity social media can be quite compelling and certainly advantageous to their career and visibility if managed properly.  A lot of times, that's where Cassie Petrey comes in. She is the CEO of CrowdSurf. It is an entertainment industry firm that handles social media content for big stars like Britney Spears, Camila Cabello and The BackStreet Boys.  Cassie founded Crowd Surf with a friend after managing MySpace pages for country music stars back in the mid-2000s. She came to prominence in the music industry and quickly realized there was opportunity in handling these emerging online content platforms for the stars. That was 17 years ago.  It's that depth of experience with celebrities and social media that compelled me to ask Cassie to come on the show. It's insightful for us to hear what the upper echelon of creators are doing, even if they aren't the types of creators we in the influencer space are typically dealing with.  Winfluence is made possible by Cipio.ai – The Community Commerce Marketing platform. What does that mean? It's an influencer marketing software solution, but it has additional apps that function to tap into your brand community to drive commerce. Community Commerce Marketing moves beyond influencers to fans and followers, customers, employees and more. With Cipio.ai, you get the vital social media discovery and data you need for your typical influencer marketing effort. But additional apps help you uncover raving fans in your own community to increase sales, retention and engagement. The best thing about Cipio.ai? You can start using it for free. Influencer discovery and list building doesn't cost a thing. Go to jasonfalls.co/cipio and see the software that was so good, I joined the team. Learn more about your ad choices. Photo: Mike Krstic My guest this week is Cassie Petrey who's been behind the social media marketing for some of the music's most iconic artists including Backstreet Boys, Camila Cabello and Britney Spears.  Cassie is the co-founder of Crowd Surf, a leading marketing and music management firm. She started at age 12 creating a newsletter for the Backstreet Boys that reached fans worldwide — then years later she helped re-introduce the band to new generation of fans.  At age 17 as a college rep for Warner Music Group, Cassie was among the first in the music industry to recognize the vast marketing potential of nascent mid-2000s platforms Myspace and Facebook.  Today, her company Crowd Surf has worked with tech giants Apple and Google, and labels such as Universal, Disney, Sony, Warner and more.  Cassie is a Forbes 30 Under 30 and Billboard 30 Under 30 recipient, and she is a leading social media and artist management Hollywood powerhouse. During the interview we spoke about convincing a major label about the value of social media, motivating artists to post, how artists may compromise their brand on TikTok, getting artists to establish their brand, and much more. I spoke with Cassie via zoom from her office in Los Angeles, CA. On the intro I'll take a look at the new radio artist royalty bills before Congress, and Google's new Project Caviar.

At age 12, Petrey ran an AOL Backstreet Boys newsletter that had over 10,000 subscribers, which led to being a serial super fan of several different artists.By age 17, she landed a job at Warner Music Group as a College Representative. Shortly after signing on board, MySpace made its debut and Petrey capitalized on this avenue by setting up a page for one of the projects she had been assigned from Warner. This page was one of the first major label ventures into leveraging MySpace, and this led to a full time position in the Digital Department at Warner Bros.Records office in Nashville. In her role, she oversaw social networking campaigns for label stars such as Faith Hill, Blake Shelton, and many others. When Petrey graduated college, the role of "Community Manager" didn't exist at companies. She knew social media platforms were more important than they were given credit for. Always seeking new and innovative ways to create organic, meaningful connections between artist and their fans, Petrey went on to form Crowd Surf in 2007, with long time friend Jade Driver. At 25 years old, she was selected to be featured on Billboard's “30 Under 30” list. This highlights executives making an impact in the industry and driving business forward. As a member to YEC (Young Entrepreneur Council), she has been quoted in numerous media outlets such as Huffington Post, Inc., Business Insider and more.Today, their company has evolved into a 35-person team, with four offices and revolving roster of accounts boasting a collective social footprint of approximately 800 million followers. Stay up to date with Cassie Petrey:Website - http://crowdsurf.net/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/cassiepetrey/Crowd Surf Facebook - https://www.linkedin.com/company/crowd-surf/

Surviving the Music Industry

Making it happen when an entire world is telling you it's not going to happen with Crowd Surf co-founder and co-host of the podcast "How I Got Backstage", Jade Driver. We talk about digital strategy and what's really popping in 2019. Social media marketing, crisis management, finding yourself as an artist, but most importantly we talk about mental health in the landscape of working in the industry.    The history of Jade has a pattern of making it happen and passion. I also found that Jade has been pretty true to herself. A true fan, passionate about her work, and no stopping her. Early in her career, working in radio promotions, she met what would be her future clients. From there Warner Bros. came calling because of a revolutionary idea that Jade was already doing. Using social media as a tool for the music industry. In the time of Myspace's zenith, Jade and her team focused on capitalizing the platform to push their clients further in their careers. Soon Crowd Surf was born. Crowd Surf is a fan-centric marketing company, with offices in LA, Nashville and NYC, which specializes in entertainment marketing, artist management, digital strategy, content production, publicity and digital crisis management. Clients include Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Why Don't We, Andy Grammar, AJR, NCT-127, Becky G, Loren Gray, Michael Buble, Max & Harvey, Jenna Raine and EBEN.    In our conversation, we chat about our brands and how to utilize that on social media. In the digital age of social media, how do you go that next level at no matter your current status? Then there's the trap of comparisons but no matter what sticking to who you are. There can be mental health concerns.  Jade and I connect on when and how to get help.    For more information about Crowd Surf visit  and subscribe to "How I Got Backstage" in your favorite podcast platform.
