Episode Summary: In this special episode, Solar Maverick Podcast co-host Li Wang turns the microphone on Benoy Thanjan, who shares his experience as a 9/11 survivor and how that day changed the course of his life. Benoy recounts being inside the World Trade Center when the first plane hit, the chaos of escaping, and the lasting impact of witnessing tragedy up close. He opens up about gratitude, resilience, and how the experience pushed him to pursue work that makes a difference. Key Takeaways Living with Gratitude: Surviving 9/11 instilled a daily appreciation for life and the present moment. Purpose Beyond Profit: The experience inspired Benoy to leave a purely financial career path and dedicate himself to renewable energy and making an impact. Legacy of 9/11: The tragedy continues to affect survivors' physical and mental health, but it also fuels determination to live with purpose.   Biographies Benoy Thanjan Benoy Thanjan is the Founder and CEO of Reneu Energy, solar developer and consulting firm, and a strategic advisor to multiple cleantech startups. Over his career, Benoy has developed over 100 MWs of solar projects across the U.S., helped launch the first residential solar tax equity funds at Tesla, and brokered $45 million in Renewable Energy Credits (“REC”) transactions. Prior to founding Reneu Energy, Benoy was the Environmental Commodities Trader in Tesla's Project Finance Group, where he managed one of the largest environmental commodities portfolios. He originated REC trades and co-developed a monetization and hedging strategy with senior leadership to enter the East Coast market. As Vice President at Vanguard Energy Partners, Benoy crafted project finance solutions for commercial-scale solar portfolios. His role at Ridgewood Renewable Power, a private equity fund with 125 MWs of U.S. renewable assets, involved evaluating investment opportunities and maximizing returns. He also played a key role in the sale of the firm's renewable portfolio. Earlier in his career, Benoy worked in Energy Structured Finance at Deloitte & Touche and Financial Advisory Services at Ernst & Young, following an internship on the trading floor at D.E. Shaw & Co., a multi billion dollar hedge fund. Benoy holds an MBA in Finance from Rutgers University and a BS in Finance and Economics from NYU Stern, where he was an Alumni Scholar. Li Wang Better every day. That's the way I aspire to live. I was born in 1973 in Philadelphia. My parents immigrated from Taipei and my dad's first job out of graduate school was in Philadelphia. I'm a die-hard Eagles fan and being raised in that city has shaped my identity. Hip-hop culture served as my first artistic influence. Run-DMC, Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys shaped how I created my own environment. During the summer of O.J. trial I interned at the Philadelphia Daily News. I became hooked on journalism. I went on to another internship at the Des Moines Register and started my career as a business reporter for the Times of Trenton. I was the arts editor for the Honolulu Weekly and then the film critic for the Harrisburg Patriot-News. Website design I could see the end of the print industry so I decided to get a professional certificate in digital marketing from New York University. I started an agency with a partner doing SEO, PPC , content creation and website design. My partner decided to focus on software development and I turned my attention to website design. Today I help small business owners shine online with compelling websites to resonate with their target audiences. Personal interests I'm a fitness enthusiast (CrossFit), watch collector (14060M, PAM112, SBGA085), and father (Matthew and Noemi).   Stay Connected: Benoy Thanjan Email: info@reneuenergy.com  LinkedIn: Benoy Thanjan Website: https://www.reneuenergy.com   Li Wang Linkedin:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/liwang22/ Website:  https://www.littleoxworkshop.com/

Welcome to “Music Speaks,” the When Words Fail Music Speaks podcast where we battle depression with the power of music. In today's episode we kick things off with a quick shout‑out to our sponsor, BetterHelp—your affordable, on‑your‑schedule mental‑health ally offering listeners 10 % off the first month of therapy. We dive straight into a lively conversation with Milwaukee's own Alan Hales—radio host, founder the independent‑music hub Breaking and Entering, and the mastermind behind the tongue‑in‑cheek “Bad Pitches Only” series that spotlights the most cringeworthy artist submissions. Allen walks us through:The gritty reality of band‑to‑radio submissions (missing ISRC codes, un‑licensed MP3s, and why a simple artist bio is a must). How his weekly “Love Local Radio” hour on FM 101 gives Milwaukee's DIY talent a dedicated airtime—and the art of curating an hour‑long, genre‑spanning playlist that keeps listeners tuned in.The evolution of the indie music landscape from the 90s to today's streaming‑driven world, and why the internet may actually be a bigger equalizer than any record label ever was.The rise of merch on Amazon, t‑public, and the challenges of quality control when you're a one‑person shirt empire. We also explore the future of music creation, tackling the hot‑button debate around AI‑generated—sharing Allen's own viral AI‑track that racked up millions of plays before anyone realized it wasn't human‑made. All of is threaded together with humor, personal anecdotes about skate‑boarding, Tony Hawk video games, and Allen's ultimate “Mount Rushmore” of musical influences—from the Ramones to the Beastie Boys and local legend Twan Mac.Stay tuned for actionable tips for aspiring artists, a glimpse into the Milwaukee‑vs‑the‑world music scene, and a reminder that when words fail, music always speaks.Grab your headphones, hit play, and let the conversation—and the beats—begin.

Punk music branched out in the late 70s / early 80s into a harder, faster, thrashier style than its earlier predecessor. If (as is often claimed) the original wave of punk was a reaction to the complexity of prog and the lack of danger in other forms of popular music, then hardcore was the next phase of that during the era of post-punk. It was about catharsis and screaming out about injustice. Then there was Bad Brains. Welcome to episode 129 of See Hear Podcast. Tim has selected the 2012 documentary Bad Brains: A Band In DC for round table discussion. Bad Brains brought something different to the table for their time. In America in the early eighties, punk bands generally weren't playing reggae music as a regular part of their sets. Certain British bands were combining punk energy with a reggae outlook in their music. Bad Brains had gone from being influenced by the jazz fusion stylings of Return To Forever to being converted to punk via the Sex Pistols (already making them unique). Seeing Bob Marley perform made them convert to Rastafarianism and incorporate reggae as well as hardcore punk into their music – not a hybrid, but two sides of the same coin. The documentary goes back and forth between current day events (at the time of filming) and archival footage of the band to tell their story. We get a worrisome start with a “how-did-we-get-here?” approach to the rest of the film.....a trope I'm quite fond of. In a way, the Bad Brains tale could be the story of millions of bands, but they're seen as hugely exciting pioneers of what they do. Many important bands that followed sang their praises as an influence (Beastie Boys, Nirvana....) HR, their “lead throat” gradually became more and more unstable in his behaviour, and in a time where no one was using the expression “mental health”, his behaviour was probably explained away as “that's just HR”, rather than investigating if there was something wrong. Sadly, Kerry wasn't available, but Tim and I discussed positive mental attitudes, wearing motorcycle helmets on stage, not showing up to gigs, punk that wasn't nihilistic, and much more. Many important bands that followed sang their praises as an influence (Beastie Boys, Nirvana, Black Flag....) HR, their “lead throat” gradually became more and more unstable in his behaviour, and in a time where no one was using the expression “mental health”, his behaviour was probably explained away as “that's just HR”, rather than investigating if there was something wrong. Sadly, Kerry wasn't available, but Tim and I discussed positive mental attitudes, wearing motorcycle helmets on stage, not showing up to gigs, punk that wasn't nihilistic, and much more. Fresh off the Badlands gathering in Deadwood, the duo recounts highlights from the trip, including visits to Wild Bill Hickok's haunts, old-west photo shoots with fellow Badlanders, and the electric premiere of Brad's new documentary. Mixing stories from the road with a handpicked soundtrack, Brad and Jay spin everything from Clint Eastwood tributes and Beastie Boys classics to Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Volbeat, Kid Rock, and Bon Jovi. They cap it off with Thin Lizzy and spaghetti western flair, capturing the spirit of Deadwood's wild past and Badlands' vibrant present in one jam-packed episode.

KT recalls a legendary NFL Combine trip where Jeff Cavanaugh ate five sliders… and immediately paid the price.

Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to returning (or is it returning, returning, oh well, whatever, never mind), guest Eric Bonerz, son of actor/director Peter Bonerz. We had such a good time talking to Eric in our first conversation, we brought him back to discuss more of the wild and the wacky things we connected on the first time around. Of course, like many of our guests, we discussed the weird and wonderful connection we have to the Oakwood School like so many of our past guests. Be it Peter Rafelson, Carnie Wilson, Jason Everly or many others nothing bonds us closer than Gorilla Glue like Oakwood. But this time around we delve deep into more on his dinner with cartoonist Chuck Jones as a small kid, what it was like mixing a track with Trent Reznor at the infamous house where Sharon Tate was murdered (really),  befriending director Harmony Korine while running the X-Large store in New York for The Beastie Boys, and drumming for Free Kitten from then Sonic Youth's co-hort Kim Gordon & much much more. This is the Rarified Heir podcast and everyone has a story.

Carl Ruiz, Vic Henley and Sherrod Small 3/22Joined by Vic Henley, the Mad Cube, and culinary maestro Carl Ruiz, the studio is buzzing with hilarious debates and nostalgic tales. They dive into a spirited discussion about music covers, sparked by a bluesy rendition of the Beastie Boys' classic by The Record Company. Is it a tribute or a travesty? The gang spars over whether iconic tracks like 'American Pie' or 'Stairway to Heaven' should ever be touched, with Carl staunchly defending the originals and Vic championing creative spins. From there, the conversation spirals into uproarious stories of youthful mischief—think roller-skating escapades with glitter wheels, Central Park's eccentric skaters, and Opie's days as a golf caddy pulling off 'Black Ops' pranks, like tossing golf balls and snapping putters during high-stakes matches. The crew doesn't stop there, diving into heartfelt and frustrating memories of family, shady business deals, and entrepreneurial dreams gone awry, all laced with their signature irreverent humor. It's a rollercoaster of laughs, nostalgia, and raw storytelling that'll keep you hooked! The final year of my radio journey holds a special place in my heart, made even more poignant by the loss of my cherished friends, Carl Ruiz and Vic Henley. Reflecting on that time, I rediscovered the pure passion and exhilaration that drew me to radio in the first place. Amidst the chaos and challenges, we found endless moments of hilarity and camaraderie. Alongside Carl, Vic, and Sherrod Small, we shared unforgettable experiences both on and off the airwaves, our tight-knit bond shining through every episode. That year also marked Carl Ruiz's meteoric rise to stardom, inspiring me to launch the Opie Radio podcast with him. I'm immensely grateful to Erock, Clubsoda Kenny, Paul, and Louis for joining us on this wild ride. Get ready to dive into the rollercoaster of emotions—the highs, the lows, and the laugh-out-loud moments—that defined my last year in radio.

Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Musicians have been inspired by alcohol since the days of traveling troubadours. Booze is a loosener of lips, a loosener of hips, and a shared experience for many adults – although respect to our sober brothers and sisters, especially in these challenging times. The summer months in particular have long been associated with adult beverages. Margaritas on the deck. Wine on the beach. A nice cold beer at a barbecue. I can still remember being in high school in the early 90s and having my mind blown by seeing the video for Fishbone's "Sunless Saturday" on MTV's 120 Minutes and going to my local record store (R.I.P., Twisted Disque on Jamaica Ave) to get their album The Reality of My Surroundings, and then walking around Queens with it blasting in my headphones, mesmerized by the way they melded genres like ska, funk, punk, metal and more. Fishbone is one of the bands that showed me what was possible, as far as breaking down both genre and racial barriers in music. SO! When I learned that Fishbone were getting ready to release their first full-length album in almost 20 years, their awesome new LP Stockholm Syndrome and that they would be doing interviews, I knew I had to make it happen. It was a blast connecting with Angelo Moore, who is the only permanent member of Fishbone — the only one who has been in the band for its entire 40 year history, while others have left or joined or left and re-joined — for the conversation in episode 125. We talked about his earliest experiences with creativity — he started out pop-locking and street dancing in Hollywood before he started playing music. He wanted to get a keyboard but his dad insisted on saxophone, and thus the seeds for Fishbone were planted. Angelo talks about meeting his bandmates in eighth grade and schlepping on the bus more than two hours each way from where he lived in the Valley to band practice in South Central LA, working up to their first show at Madame Wong's and eventually scoring a major label deal that turned out to be a mixed blessing. We also delve into the ups and downs of their career, what he remembers about early encounters with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys, and what inspired Fishbone's new album, which is a true return to form — the sound of a band that has never been afraid to be completely themselves, in all of their bright, brash, political, genre-melding glory. (You might start by listening to the Stockholm Syndrome single "Racist Piece of Shit" to get a sense of the album as a whole.) One caveat: You'll notice that the audio sounds a little rough. The band had just begun a run of dates on Less Than Jake's Summer Circus tour, and when Angelo joined our Zoom, he was on the road. Literally. He called while driving himself to soundcheck for a show in Florida. So it was a little more chaotic than the usual interview, with him attempting to navigate while answering my questions. You'll also hear him stop for a pee break, mid-interview, which was hilarious. Fishbone are on the road through late August and you can get tickets here.

It's summertime, the living is easy, and we figured why not play a doubleheader? Today on Dad Bod Rap Pod, hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc with help from Producer Cutso break down the final albums in the Beastie Boys' Catalog. First up is the Mix Up from 2007, the only official instrumental LP in their catalog, since In Sound From Way Out is a compilation. The Boys established a dress code and payed homage to their favorite wordless acts and we have thoughts about it. Is it "classic material" or "placid material?" There's only one way to find out. Then we turn our attention to 2011's Hot Sauce Committe pt 2, the Beastie Boys' last album. In some ways it is a return to form, bringing back their signature processed vocals and combining eclectic musical styles in the way that only they can. We also spend some time discussing the elaborate record nerd mythology they attempted to establish in the liner notes. While we have discussed, dissected, debated and ranked every Beasties album, we are not quite done yet. Tune in next week for the Beastie Boys song draft, a celebrations of a great rap group, featuring selections from our hosts and calls form friends of the program from around the world.
