This week on GenX Journeys, I'm joined by the multi-talented and endlessly creative Will Padilla — host of the hit podcast 1980s Now, composer, writer, actor, and author of Totally Bogus But True: Tales of the 1980s. If you grew up loving breakdancing battles, MTV, Knight Rider, The A-Team, Beastie Boys, or the neon-soaked energy of the 80s… this conversation will feel like coming home. But this episode isn't just nostalgia. It's creative reinvention, GenX resilience, and the reminder that it's never too late to return to the passions you thought you left behind. ✨ In This Episode We Dive Into:
Folks, we are ditching our guests and talking about the Beastie Boys 3rd album and it will make you say "DAMN!" We talk about our various types of whips, the worst airplane movies, and Rob tries to talk Pat O'Brien. Then we sing along with Snow and go on a comment rabbit hole. Rob goes on a winning streak, Matt talks inflatables, and Big Daddy takes on the big Easy. Then we talk the boys playing their own instruments, the great music of the 90s, and whether or not an eclectic album is a good thing. Next week we are talking New Order "Power, Corruption, and Lies" and you should also listen to some versions of Blue Monday! 802 277 BECK

Josh Flanagan, Conor Kilpatrick, and Ron Richards were joined by special guests Gordon the Intern, Dr. Ryan Haupt, Jim Viscardi, Tom King, Chris Eliopoulos, Mike Norton, and Brian Michael Bendis… and thus, they didn't answer as many emails as they normally would have. So they're back to answer more! Running Time: 02:00:47 Audience Questions:00:02:26 – The tradition continues as iFanboy fields questions from the loyal iFanbase! Ken J. wants to know which comic book series and comic book related media has affected the iFanboys the most. Aldwin D. asks if it would be okay for publishers to use AI to fix inconsistent art in old comics, how Josh feels about a joke he made 877 episodes ago, and what iFanboy's legacy is among comic book reviewers. Matt C. wants to know who would win in an archery competition: Hawkeye or Green Arrow? Tharanga B. asks if Josh was a guitar, which guitar would he be and if Ron was a pinball machine, which pinball machine he would be and if Conor was an old movie, which old movie he would be. Kyle F. wants to know which moments from the show would make an iFanboy Anniversary Clip Reel. Marc B. wants to know how iFanboy would crossover Marvel and DC. Brad G. wants iFanboy to identify the Top 5 Patron Powers. Joe T. asks about revisiting childhood favorite comics and films. Monica M. wants to know if disliking a comic book could cause iFanboy to no longer trust that person's taste. Joe G. is curious what Ron thought about the Krakoa Era. Drew G. has questions. A lot of questions. Andrew B. wonders if Conor was stuck on a deserted island with a copy of Watchmen, would he finally read the pirate parts and from where he gets his comic book fandom sources. Didi P. asks if anyone boycotted Marvel over Jimmy Kimmel and how MorrisonCon went. John H. asks about PORNO comics. Darren C. is curious if the iFanboys have truly considered stopping. Damian S. wants to get granular about recording processes and programs and equipment. Roy S. asks about Find Ethel and the Beastie Boys. Eric C. wants to know if the format of the Pick of the Week show is responsible for iFanboy's longevity. Alan T. is in the middle of a complete Marvel Comics re-read and is looking for advice on where and when to stop. Bill S. wonders what the iFanboys think they did well in the video show era. Mike O. asks the iFanboys to pick their doctors from ER that they would want to treat them. Marc V. has dropped off of weekly comics and wonders if the iFanboys have ever felt the urge. Erik M. wants to know how Conor and Ron felt during the 2000 World Series. Who says taste can't evolve? This week, Andrew and Dr Sam go on a full-blown U-turn, confessing their love for bands they once treated with the kind of disdain normally reserved for traffic wardens and warm lager. Expect shocking revelations: Bonnie Tyler's absurdly overproduced 80s epic is now basically gospel. Cradle of Filth? Once unlistenable black metal, now "charmingly chaotic". The Beastie Boys go from party-clown pariahs to filth-toned bass gods. Deep Purple gets a love letter. And Split Enz? The band nobody asked for suddenly gets a sparkly redemption arc. Also: Finnish shopping centre linguistics How a Mercedes almost caused an international incident Traffic wardens, German police, and the time an entire road of cars vanished Folk music's stealthy mission to win your heart through Pete Seeger-related Stockholm syndrome Basically, it's the usual chaos with a theme loosely stuck on like a peeling gig poster on a damp venue wall. Stick around for ludicrous Hard-Ons album titles and an exploration of music that makes your genitals not catch fire (unlike Bonnie Tyler's). Beastie Boys' Anthology: Sounds of Science, Michael Diamond (Mike D) says: “We had all been influenced by Lee Perry's productions. We were into how on reggae recordings there would often be a ‘dub version' on the b-side of a single, a practice that got co-opted by a few punk and early hip-hop singles as well.” Who knew? When their debut “License To Ill” was released in 1986, almost 40 years ago - it was fresh and had a great sense of humour, playfullness that on the surface could be disregarded as white-boy rap, but if you took a close listen you'll notice the attention to detail in the music - the use of sampling, 808 Drum Machine, experimentation, mixing and overall production - this was groundbreaking. The lads and Rick Ruben had crafted something unique that had not been done before. In 1985, it was Run-DMC, Schoolly D, and LL Cool J, but by 1986, hip-hop had begun to transform, and part of that was due to this release. They'd pulled together all the elements of their musical inspirations, Run-DMC, WWF Wrestling (Rick Ruben is a known superfan of the sport), The Clash, Dub, Punk, along with a frat-boy, teenage FU attitude. They'd taken hip-hop to a level while still paying homage to those they'd learned from, borrowed from, sampled from and absorbed. Within the following year, you'd have more groundbreaking releases from Boogie Down Productions, Marley Marl & The Mighty Public Enemy. On their 1998 album Hello Nasty, Lee Perry is on “Dr Lee, PhD. Perry's fingerprints are evident: spring reverb, echo throws, and that cosmic feel only he could bring. They also collaborated with Mad Professor (the recording in question is the unreleased dub instrumental album that Mad Professor and the Beastie Boys made, presumably at some point between the releases of Ill Communication and Hello Nasty) from Beastiemania.com. Dub has woven its magic thread throughout so many styles of music, not to mention launching entirely new genres via direct inspiration and use of dub techniques and sampling, that we shouldn't be surprised to see that same link with the Beastie Boys. Barry Krutchik is an legendary Hollywood and pop culture journalist who has conducted over 2000 celebrity interviews across music, film & television over the past 40 years, capturing raw, unscripted moments — from Bob Hope to The Beastie Boys, Santana to Stevie Wonder, Jerry Seinfeld to Jay Z, Mick Jagger, Keanu Reaves, Dave Chappelle, Celine Dion ... basically, the biggest stars EVER! Whether backstage or behind the camera, Barry's authenticity & quick humor helped high-profile stars feel at home, resulting in raw, unscripted moments. Barry makes things fun! After a decade, he stopped doing interviews in 2002. “By the third time you're interviewing Peter Frampton, it might be time to try something else” he jokes, a surreal realization, considering that twelve-year-old Barry would've never believed he'd even meet Frampton. So, he launched Krutchie Entertainment and, using his vast trove of celebrity contacts, began booking talent and producing high-impact media events for the Grammys, MTV, BET, FOX, Cirque du Soleil, and more. Over the decades, as technology, public relations and the world of entertainment changed radically, Barry's professional opportunities also changed. He was no longer a hungry young journalist but a seasoned gentleman in an industry looking for youth and diversity. Then, Covid destroyed his live events business overnight. Terrified, Barry had to reinvent himself. This journeyman is now activating his extraordinary content. He has a new book coming out, Classic Conversations: ‘90s Hip Hop and R&B featuring his intimate, one-of-a-kind moments and quotes with hip hop and R&B royalty. Each interview includes entertaining commentary that only Barry has the ability to provide. In addition, Barry recently returned to interviewing with a one-on-one sit down with Lady Gaga. And, he has new projects in the pipeline harnessing his treasure trove of celebrity content

It's time once again to bow down to the ferocious ladies of rock! Our 8th episode in a series dedicated to women who bring the fury with style and passion. This time, we are paying tribute to the '90s and the Riot Grrrl movement of that decade. A movement all about women being empowered to express anger, rage, and frustration like never before. Piss off a man; you can fight it out and then go have a pint at the pub. Piss off a woman, and you will pay for it 10-fold. These are ladies that play loud and heavy with attitude and… balls? What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. These ladies bring it, and you owe to yourself to check them out! We hope we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Motor Dolls – “Little Brother” from Burning Memories (1996)Jucifer – “Long Live The King” from Calling All Cars On The Vegas Strip (1999)Jack Off Jill – “Swollen” from Sexless Demons And Scars (1997)Lunachicks – “Bitterness Barbie” from Jerk Of All Trades (1995)Sugarsmack – “Venus” from Tank Top City (1998)Sleater-Kinney – “Stay What You Are” from Call The Doctor (1996)7 Year Bitch – “Hip Like Junk” from Viva Zapata! Barry and Abigail try something a little different with newly minted Three-Timer Jeff “Jafo” Shettler, who previously appeared on Jukebox: Wish There Were Beer (Pink Floyd and brewLAB) and Bonus: Pink Floyd Leftovers (Pink Floyd and brewLAB Leftovers). Barry called out Rice Rice Baby.Jafo suggested pairing The False Prophet with Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones, Bitches Brew by Miles Davis, or Ripple by Grateful Dead. Other suggested song pairings we heard included California Dreamin' by The Mamas & The Papas, Caravan by Van Morrison, Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young, Banana Pancakes by Jack Johnson, and Worst Comes to Worst by Dilated Peoples.Barry suggested pairing Jafo's homebrewed Maple Bacon Bourbon Porter with Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen. By the way, you can hear our discussion of this album in our episode Dark Beer on the Edge of Town from 2021.Abigail wasn't drinking, but she plugged I Don't Want to Know by Fleetwood Mac.Dave, one of the brewers and the beertender the night we “stopped by,” suggested pairing The False Prophet with (Got) Everything to Shine by Saudade Experiment.Up next… Brothers in Arms by Dire StraitsJingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

Dan, Manny, & Billy talk about the recent shutting down of MTV music channels in the UK and what that means for the future of MTV, while putting some iconic music videos that aired on MTV in the 80s and 90s to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “MTV created culture.” -Manny After hearing about MTV music channels being shut down in the UK after 40 years, the guys had to call an audible and to talk about what they think this means for the future of MTV, music videos, and the cultural impact that MTV had on pop-culture. They also talk about what this means for MTV in the US? The episode then dives into a celebration of iconic music videos that aired in MTV from the 80s and 90s, like Michael Jackson's “Thriller,” Beastie Boys' “Sabotage,” Peter Gabriel's “Sledgehammer,” and Duran Duran's “Hungry Like the Wolf.” There's also the classic Nostalgia Test Podcast tangents, Billy's hot take about Pearl Jam, and so much more. Le 4 novembre, Marjorie Hache propose une RTL2 Pop-Rock Station percutante, entre énergie brute et curiosité sonore. L'émission s'ouvre avec The Charlatans et leur titre "Deeper and Deeper", issu du nouvel album "We Are Love". Suivent The B-52's, David Bowie pour l'anniversaire de "The Man Who Sold The World", et The Trashmen avec le classique "Surfin' Bird". Les moments forts s'enchaînent : Nine Inch Nails livre "As Alive As You Need Me To Be", extrait de la bande originale du film "Tron Ares", avant Florence + The Machine et "Buckle", coécrit avec Mitski. Welcome back to the Captain's Quadrant, where warp speed opinions meet photon torpedo-level takes! Today, Jason Roy Gaston and VHS Jase beam into the Kelvin timeline to dissect the third installment of the rebooted Star Trek franchise: Star Trek Beyond. If you enjoy the show please consider becoming a Patreon! Returning VHS JaseStar Trek Beyond boldly goes where Into Darkness stumbled. With Justin Lin at the helm and Simon Pegg co-writing, this entry trades convoluted villain reveals for classic Trek vibes: exploration, camaraderie, and a dash of philosophical musing. The Enterprise crew is stranded, the stakes are personal, and the villain Krall (Idris Elba) brings a gritty menace that feels earned.Chris Pine channels a more seasoned Kirk, balancing swagger with introspection.Zachary Quinto's Spock is emotionally layered, especially in scenes with Karl Urban's McCoy—who absolutely steals the show.Sofia Boutella's Jaylah is a breakout star, giving the franchise a fresh, fierce energy.Jason Roy Gaston notes: “This is the most ‘Star Trek' of the Kelvin movies—it's not trying to be Star Wars, it's trying to be Starfleet.”VHS Jase adds: “Jaylah is the MVP. She's got the attitude of a rogue and the heart of a Federation officer.”Lin's action chops shine in kinetic sequences, but it's the quieter moments—like Kirk's reflection on his father's legacy—that give this film warp core depth. The visuals are stunning, the score (with a killer Beastie Boys callback) pumps adrenaline, and the pacing never drags.Absolutely. Beyond feels like a love letter to The Original Series while still pushing the Kelvin timeline forward. It's not perfect—Krall's backstory could use more polish—but it's a thrilling, heartfelt ride.
This is the second half at a look at the stories behind some of the most iconic album covers of all time…on part one, we looked at the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Depeche Mode, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Smashing Pumpkins, all in chronological order, ending in 1993. Now we're going to pick things up in 1994. This is part two of a show that looks at some of the most iconic-looking albums in history, along with some secret stories they contain. Titled after the Kendrick Lamar feature in the latter portion of the installment, welcome to I'm Dying of Thirst. The newest episode curated by your favorite internet disc jockey, DJ Witwickatron. A hip-hip majority installment starting in the 90's and ending at current features. I do love the Jai Paul demo soundcloud playlist, but outside of that? My favorite portions of this episode would be Wu-Tang's Black Diamonds, Beastie Boys live on David Letterman, Paul Wall Sittin' Sideways on vinyl and the Jay Electronica run featuring the closing stanza of Eternal Sunshine. Boylife in EU by Yung Lean makes me smile as well. I really ended up enjoying this episode, I hope you did the same. In other unrelated news, just yesterday I was lucky enough to give a really nice, beautiful lady a bouquet of roses for the first time in my life. Peachy, dusty pink roses that I spent time picking out, found a vase at a separate fancy location and really enjoyed the whole process. No reason in relaying this message to my internet populous other than to let you know that DJ Witwicky is out here balling out of control in real life. Thank you, as always, for being here. I'll be byck with another handful of game next weekend.Polka King of the Midwest,DJ Witwicky
It's hard to imagine an album more well-respected than Goodie Mob's debut, Soul Food. It gets well-deserved love from rap enthusiasts from all over the map: the south, backpackers, people who like a little bit of spirituality in the mix, beat heads, lyric lovers, pretty much everyone. Goodie Mob never quite got the shine that their close compatriots Outkast did, and maybe that's part of the reason why underground fans still hold this album dear 30 years after its release. This week on the show DBRP hosts David Ma, Demone Carter and Nate LeBlanc are examining this classic record which still sounds fresh after severl decades. After some contextual table setting, we use our patented rubric to try and assign numerical scores to our feelings about this work of art. We have done this several times, most prominently on our Beastie Boys series over the summer, but we have never had a final score result quite like this one before. Tune in! We meet Sean Ono Lennon to explore his music and life with art, plus we discuss the forthcoming box set Power to the People, that Sean has produced, of his parents' Yoko Ono and John Lennon's 1972 fundraising live New York concert. We consider activism in art, especially the legacy of John and Yoko's timeless work together (as also documented in the recent One to One documentary).Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York City on 30 August 1972, the Power to The People box set includes 31 Live Tracks from John & Yoko's two historic sets at the One To One Concert backed by Plastic Ono Band, Elephant's Memory and Special Guests. They were John Lennon's only full-length concerts after leaving The Beatles and the last two full-length concerts that John & Yoko performed together. Released from 10th October 2025. He came of age in the kaleidoscopic '90s, working with Cibo Matto and issuing his first solo album, 1998's Into the Sun, on the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal label, while beginning a long stint playing in his mother Yoko Ono's band. In the following decade he formed the psychedelic duo the Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and the improvisational prog group Mystical Weapons. As his musical interests expanded further, he teamed with Les Claypool to form the hard-to-categorize project the Claypool Lennon Delirium, branched out into film scoring, explored more mainstream territory as he worked with artists like Lana Del Ray, Lady Gaga and Lily Allen, and delved into jazz as well. His first foray into that style was 2024's Asterisms, a fully instrumental album of electronics-fused jazz and psychedelic soundscape music. The son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Lennon was born in New York City in 1975. During his childhood, he was educated in Swiss boarding schools, but occasionally appeared on his mother's albums and sang on the 1984 Ono tribute Every Man Has a Woman. In his early teens, he was occasionally seen decked out in a plastic Thriller jacket and hanging out with Michael Jackson, but his first official step into the spotlight was in the form of filmed interviews for the 1988 documentary Imagine: John Lennon. Three years later, he organized -- with Ono and Lenny Kravitz -- a star-studded re-recording of his father's "Give Peace a Chance" as a protest to the Gulf War. That year, he also appeared on Kravitz's album Mama Said.” Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi.In 2025, Sean is working on a new Claypool Lennon Delirium album (their 3rd) and is directing a documentary film on the crazy genius fashion designers 3as4, who have designed outfits for Bjork and Yoko among many others.
