Hicimos un podcast titulado, “Los coches italianos, ¿son tan malos?”. Y me pedisteis éste.

This week on the Podcast: John Marcar sits down with PR Guru Wayne Bruce. Wayne, affectionately known to many as ‘Man Bat', is the Chief Communications and D&I Officer at Bentley Motors and is responsible for much of what we see, hear and experience from the Bentley brand alongside his team of colleagues. Before taking the leading comms role at Bentley, Wayne has also been at the forefront of executive automotive PR with roles at VW, SEAT, Nissan, INFINITI and perhaps one of the most significant chapters, McLaren Automotive, where in his time as Global Communications Director he oversaw the launch of the McLaren P1, 650S, 675LT, 570S, 570GT, 720S, Senna, 600LT, Speed Tail and the GT.Later, Wayne moved from the British new kid on the block (McLaren) to one of the most prestigious British brands - Bentley where since starting with the marque, has seen his involvement in bringing the hybrid Bentayga, the 3rd Generation Continental GT, and the latest Generation Flying Spur to market as well as reworking and relaunching the prestigious Mulliner brand. Bentley's Bentayga helped bring Bentley into the modern crossover battles when it surfaced in 2015. Bentley updated its hot-selling Bentayga in 2020 with some styling and tech enhancements to help make it even more competitive in a hotly contested luxury car space. Borrowing the styling direction from the rest of the Bentley lineup, the Bentayga doesn't look out of place in a Bentley fan's driveway. Available in standard and long wheel base versions, the Benyaga also packs an array of different powertrains. The top-flight W12 is at home in the Bentayga speed, where it sends 626 hp into an eight-speed automatic. Bentley also offers the Bentayga with its 3.0-liter V6 hybrid and a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8. This Bentayga tester packs the 542 hp V8 under the hood. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the 2023 Bentley Bentayga Azure and puts it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a guided tour of the Bentley and highlights some of its interesting features. Murphy also takes you along on a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Bentley Bentayga, its competitive set, and if it lives up to the Bentley heritage. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes the Bentayga special.

The Bentley Bentayga is one of the stars of the luxury crossover and SUV space. Bentley's beloved crossover joined the lineup in 2015 and saw its first serious overhaul in 2020. While Bentley's 12-cylinder-powered Bentayga Speed offers the most brutal performance in the lineup, the folks at Bentley recently introduced the Bentayga S. This S-variant of the Bentayga offers more performance than the base model without the price tag associated with the Speed. Powering this Bentley is a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 that sends 542 hp through an eight-speed transmission to all four wheels by way of an all-wheel-drive system. The Bentayga S also sports special bodywork and badging to remind folks that you're driving the performance version while it's sitting still. On this episode of Quick Spin, host Wesley Wren hops behind the wheel of the 2022 Bentley Bentayga S and puts it through its paces. Wren takes you on a walkaround of the latest Bentayga to show off the revised styling, its luxurious interior appointments and more. Wren also takes you along on a live-recorded drive review to let you know how the Bentayga S feels on the road. Adding to these segments, Wren chats with Autoweek's west coast editor Mark Vaughn. The two talk about the Bentayga, luxury crossovers and more. Closing the show, the two break down what makes the Bentley Bentayga S special.

MIKAEL B is the second artist featured in our SW X BENTLEY Art In Motion collaboration. The Art In Motion project hosted three young artists at our SW HQ to create unique pieces of work in their signature styles inspired by design elements of the new Bentley Bentayga SUV. The pieces created during this residency will be auctioned in late December with all proceeds going to Inner City Arts. Based in Los Angeles and originally from Copenhagen, Mikael B has developed his own unmistakable style deeply rooted in his early years as a graffiti artist. Using spray and acrylic Mikael creates complex conceptual works of art that transform impressions and experiences into an abstract design language. An avid practitioner of meditation and mindfulness, he is always working to make the most of the present moment to manifest future success. In this episode Mikael breaks down to Jimi his belief in positive thinking, law of attraction, the roots of his creativity and even pitches a Bentayga road trip.

In this episode he breaks down some of the childhood memories that led him to art, reactions to his work, the ephemeral aspects of creating and of course his experience driving the Bentayga during his residency.
It seems like just yesterday we were all complaining that there was no way Bentley could make an SUV that wouldn't look like crap. Well, years later, Bentley is still making the Bentayga and they've even just updated it! Which, of course, means we have to dig into what they changed... TESLA UPDATE LETS DRIVERS STREAM SPOTIFY, NETFLIX, AND YOUTUBE "On Thursday, the latest over-the-air software update, known as Version 10, started rolling out to Tesla owners. The update packs in a lot of fun features, mostly for when the car is parked or charging." reports the tech site Mashable: "Games like Cuphead are coming to the Tesla Arcade and a new "Tesla Theater" application houses all the streaming video options. Caraoke is like it sounds: a karaoke interface with lyrics on the screen so you can belt out your favorite tunes. A Summon update will let you "summon" your car from a parking spot if it's in your line of sight. This is only available for drivers who have the Full Self-Driving version or Enhanced Autopilot package. Other updates will streamline Sentry mode, and the new mysteriously named "Joe mode" lets you lower the volume for parking chimes and other alerts if you have a sleeping baby in the car. The mobile Tesla app that lets you control the climate, unlock the car, and other options was also updated and now you'll be able to remote-control windows on the Model 3 and Model X from the app. " ZDNet reports: "Along with Netflix, Tesla drivers will be able to view content from YouTube, and Hulu or Hulu + Live TV from the dash console. Tesla's self-driving capabilities aren't yet advanced enough for drivers to switch off and watch movies, and thankfully the company notes that you can "watch your favorite shows, movies and content right from your car while parked". The company says customers have praised summon it for its convenience after shopping, but notes that "those using Smart Summon must remain responsible for the car and monitor it and its surroundings at all times". The feature is available to drivers when the car is within their line of sight. Owners of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus and Standard Range vehicles will now able to stream Spotify, TuneIn, and Slacker when connected to Wi-Fi." And The Verge reports: "video recordings captured when Teslas are in their self-protect Sentry Mode are now stored in a separate folder from other camera content. A new “Joe Mode” is meant to avoid waking up sleeping passengers by reducing the volume of certain car chimes and alerts. And the Tesla mobile app can do a few more things and control even more aspects of the car remotely (like the windows)." SlashGear on China: "Tesla customers in China will soon get iQiyi and Tencent Video access in the car with more services promised in the future." Tesla says: "“We’re expanding our music and audio platform to enable Spotify Premium account access in all supported markets – one of the most requested features from Tesla owners. This will be in addition to Slacker Radio and TuneIn, which are also available in Tesla vehicles.”" If you pause the video which Tesla put online today, there's Car Wash Mode. But what is that? And on turorials: "Additionally, all customers will have access to Tesla tutorial videos to learn more about their vehicle." In fact if you play that YouTube video frame by frame it says this: Voice Commands Driving Visualization Maps Improvements Sentry Mode Improvements Software Update Improvements Application Launcher Updates YouTube Car Wash Mode Caraoke Spotify Cuphead Feeling Lucky Tesla Theater TESLA JUMPS ON REPORT MUSK AIMS TO DELIVER RECORD 100,000 CARS THIS QUARTER "Shares of Tesla jumped more than 5% after Electrek, an electric vehicle news website, reported that CEO Elon Musk said the company “has a shot” at delivering 100,000 cars this quarter, which would be a new record." says CNBC.com: "Musk wrote in the email: “We have a shot at achieving our first 100,000 vehicle delivery quarter, which is an incredibly exciting milestone for our company!” The CEO also reportedly added, “The challenge is making sure that we have the right car variants in the right locations and rallying as much as our company resources as possible to help with the end of the quarter deliveries.” The automaker is expected to report its quarterly vehicle deliveries in the next few days." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/tesla-jumps-on-report-musk-aims-to-deliver-100000-cars-this-quarter.html NORWEGIAN GAS STATION BECOMES FIRST IN WORLD TO REPLACE ALL PUMPS WITH ELECTRIC CHARGERS "Gas station" may no longer be an accurate description for a Circle K refueling outlet in Oslo, Norway, after it became the first in the world to replace all gas pumps with electric car chargers earlier this week." writes Newsweek: "The Oslo Circle K is one of the company's 16,000 gas stations around the world, but this location is the only one from any company to completely convert to electric fueling. The conversion to electric fuel "fast chargers" came at the same time as the United Nations Climate Action Summit was taking place this week in New York. Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian Electric Car Association, said in a press release that it "was extra fun to highlight this" at the same time world leaders were discussing climate change." https://www.newsweek.com/norwegian-gas-station-becomes-first-world-replace-all-pumps-electric-chargers-1461714 FIRST GAS STATION IN AMERICA TO DITCH OIL FOR 100% ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING "The first gas station in the U.S. that has been completely transitioned from a petroleum station to exclusively charging EVs opened Thursday in Takoma Park, Maryland." says CNBC.com: "RS Automotives, the local gas station, has been around since 1958. Depeswar Doley, owner of the station since 1997, said he was already unhappy with the way oil and gasoline companies structure contracts — such as limiting the use of multiple suppliers, including clauses that extend contracts when a certain volume of sales is not met and limiting maintenance support. These business factors already were pushing him to consider other options. A nudge from his daughter was the final step in convincing Doley to make the switch to EV charging. There are more than 20,700 registered EVs in Maryland, and the area also has an electric taxi service in need of more chargers for their business. The gas station conversion was jointly funded by the Electric Vehicle Institute and the Maryland Energy Administration, which provided a grant of $786,000." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/first-gas-station-to-ditch-oil-for-electric-vehicle-charging-now-open.html THE HYUNDAI VELOSTER N ETCR HAS HIT THE TRACK AND IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE A STAR WARS SHIP "Hyundai Motorsport hit the Hungaroring with its all-electric Veloster N to get the machine primed and ready for next year’s ETCR racing series. And man does it sound freakin’ cool." says Jalopnik: The Veloster N has a much higher pitch to its powertrain than fellow EV series Formula E. The company is turning its Italian HQ into an electric car centre of excellence, it says, confirming that all future Masers will be made in Italy." writes Tim Pollard for Car Magazine: "Maserati revealed that every new model in the pipeline will be either hybrid or full battery electric, and vowed that the switch from oil to volts wouldn't dent its commitment to 'innovation and the high performance embedded in the brand’s DNA.' It also committed to 'extended range and ultra-fast charging capabilities,' perhaps made easier by the brand's relatively late arrival into the electric car space." That’s provided by a 126 bhp electric motor, which is also used to eliminate turbo lag, while the power comes from a high-voltage battery that can be recharged in two-and-a-half hours." https://uk.motor1.com/news/373273/bentley-bentayga-phev-pricing-uk/ AUSTRALIA IS GETTING MORE ULTRA-RAPID CHARGING "Chargefox, which claims to be Australia’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, is increasing the number of ultra-rapid EV chargers it has in the country." as per Business insider Autralia: "The company revealed the target locations for all 22 sites in the first phase of its ultra-rapid EV charging network. WATCH THE 258MPH RIMAC C_TWO CRASH FIVE TIMES "WARNING: the following video contains footage that some viewers may find distressing. And by some viewers, likely it’ll be all of you. That’s because this video contains footage of the £1.5m+ Rimac C_Two hypercar crashing. A lot. Five times, in fact. It’s all a part of the C_Two’s homologation process to ensure it’ll be safe and road-legal across the globe. Still, five times." says Top Gear: "No lie, it’s never easy watching a super-rare, very desirable 1,887bhp self-driving electric hypercar being squished against some very solid things. Rimac reckons on 0-62mph in a frankly terrifying 1.97s, 0-100mph in 4.3s, a quarter mile time of 9.1s and 0-186mph in 11.8s." https://www.topgear.com/car-news/crash/watch-258mph-rimac-ctwo-crash-five-times QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… What do you want to hear on this podcast? Show #505 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 19th June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Hello to another new PRODUCER CLINTON DESVEAUX! And new PRODUCER NEIL BUTLER Clean Air Day with TryEV! Tesla Day tomorrow! WORLD'S FIRST HOMEMADE TESLA TRUCK "In a total boss move, Simone Giertz—who for a long time has wanted to own "an electric pickup truck, more specifically, a Tesla pickup,"—created her very own custom Tesla pickup, which she affectionately named "Truckla." says Popular Mechanics: "The project took a year of planning and required a complete teardown of the car's interior, including door panels and gaskets. Once that was done, the team moved on to frame modifications and used reciprocating saws and grinders to remove the Tesla's roof beams. Truckla's bed, for example, was originally the bed of a Ford F-150, while the rear window came from a GMC Canyon. https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/a28086506/homemade-tesla-truck-simone-giertz/ IRELAND TO BAN NEW PETROL AND DIESEL VEHICLES FROM 2030 "The Irish government plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030, as part of a major strategy to protect the environment." reports the BBC today: "The aim is to ensure that all new cars and vans on Irish roads in 11 years' time are electric vehicles. The proposed legislation was among 180 measures in the government's Climate Action Plan, published on Monday. The hope is that by the time the petrol and diesel vehicle ban is introduced in 2030 there will be 950,000 electric vehicles on Irish roads. The government is set to invest in a "nationwide" charging network to power the new vehicles. By 2025, at least one recharging point will be required at new non-residential buildings with more than 10 parking spaces." https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-48668791 BENTLEY TO ELECTRIFY ALL MODELS BY 2023; EV COMING IN 2025 "according to a new report from Car and Driver, the company has a timeline for its electric plans with the company's first fully electric vehicle debuting in 2025." says Motor1.com: "Along with its first electric vehicle, Bentley plans to hybridize every model in its lineup – the Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Mulsanne. The company will likely use the same turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 in the Bentayga that's also rumored to power the Continental GT hybrid. Customers fearful a hybrid would neuter the brand need not worry. In the Bentayga, the gasoline-electric powertrain makes 443 horsepower (330 kilowatts) and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) of torque, propelling the hefty SUV to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 5.5 seconds up to a top speed of 158 mph (254 kph). Plus, the added torque boost from the 17.3-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery will feel stupendous." https://www.motor1.com/news/355621/bentley-electrify-models-2023-electric/ NIO BEGINS DELIVERIES OF NEW ES6 ELECTRIC CROSSOVER IN CHINA "Nio announced on Tuesday that the first ES6 electric crossovers have been delivered to their owners in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. It's the automaker's second mass-production model, following the larger ES8, but the company also has the EP9 electric hypercar in its portfolio, which is impressive in its own right." writes CNET: "With five seats onboard, the ES6 is smaller and shorter than the ES8, but its wheelbase is the same. Buyers have a choice of two powertrains: A pair of electric motors putting out 430 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, or a beefier pair that puts out 536 hp and 535 lb-ft. Buyers can also choose between a 70-kilowatt-hour battery and an 84-kWh battery, the latter of which can reach up to 317 miles by NEDC estimates, which are usually higher than EPA estimates." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/nio-es6-electric-crossover-deliveries-china/ 2020 PEUGEOT 2008 DEBUTS WITH BOLD SUV LOOKS AND AN EV OPTION "After a successful first generation, Peugeot's second-generation 2008 SUV breaks the code somewhat from the familiar formula, not the least of which is a fully electric e-2008 model we'll touch on later." according to Motor1: "The new electric Peugeot is visually the same as its internal-combustion-powered sibling, with the same interior space. In place of a fuel tank and engine, you'll find a single electric motor generating 136 horsepower (101 kilowatts) and 192 pound-feet (260 Newton-meters) of instant torque. It's driven by a rather modest 50 kWh battery, which Peugeot says is good for a range of approximately 193 miles (312 kilometers). Recharge times vary depending on the power source, but a 100kW terminal can recharge the e-2008 to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes." TESLA TO CHANGE DEFAULT MODEL 3 COLOR TO WHITE "Elon Musk has announced that Tesla will be switching the Model 3’s standard color from Solid Black to Simple White. After these changes are implemented, Musk noted that the Model 3’s black paint option would command a $1,000 price, similar to Midnight Metallic Silver." says Simon at Teslarati: "Utilizing a Simple White color for the Model 3’s standard paint option could play to the electric car maker’s advantages. While not as stunning as the Pearl White Multi-Coat, Simple White paint would likely attract attract far fewer scratches than the current standard Solid Black. This would likely make the Model 3 far easier to maintain, ultimately benefiting both the vehicle’s owners and Tesla itself." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-energy-reduces-residential-solar-costs-drops-us-rankings/ TESLA ARCADE IS HERE, LETTING YOU PLAY DRIVING SIMS WITH YOUR CAR'S STEERING WHEEL "Tesla has begin rolling out an update that will effectively turn its cars into a proper gaming platform. Tesla Arcade will make games powered by the Unreal and Unity engines playable on dashboards to keep you occupied when you're sitting around waiting for your car to charge" writes Tech Radar: "CEO Elon Musk teased Tesla Arcade at this year's E3 game show, revealing that Bethesda's Fallout Shelter would soon be available to play on dashboards, and for the official launch the company released a trailer demonstrating its first ported game, Beach Buggy 2." https://www.techradar.com/news/tesla-arcade-is-here-letting-you-play-driving-sims-with-your-cars-steering-wheel COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Wednesday 7th March 2018. Coming up today, more manufacturers stop selling diesels in favour of hybrids whilst one very large one commits to diesel. Plus more from today’s Geneva Motor Show like the Hyundai Kona which you and I will to on the show tomorrow. BENTLEY LUXURY HYBRID But first of all something I teased at the start of the podcast yesterday, as it was being announced, was the first ever electrified Bentley. The Bentayga Hybrid will come with a 3.0 litre petrol engine combined with a plug in hybrid system capable of 31 miles of silent running. Bentley said this was the “worlds’ first luxury hybrid”. Let’s just give Land Rover a call and see if they would class their recent Range Rover Sport Plug In as either luxury or hybrid. I’m thinking they would. The Bentley can be selected to drive in EV mode, or the common Hold mode, should you be driving into one of the urban areas soon to ban or charge a levy for driving diesels, you can hold the charge and opt run on electrons when you need to. Charging is what you would expect for a battery around 10-15kWh, they said it would fully fast charge in 2hr 30mins, although nowhere could I find the size of the battery or the motor. The combined power from the electric motor means it should get 75g/km on the NEDC measurement here in Europe. A reminder that from later this year all cars will have to move to WLTP standard which is much more like real world driving, and is said to be far less flattering on those big engine luxury cars which have been adding small batteries to achieve theoretical low emissions. The Bentayga is coming in the second half of 2018. http://www.thedrive.com/new-cars/18987/bentley-gets-electrified-with-the-new-bentayga-hybrid https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/bentley/bentley-bentayga-hybrid-2018-suv-price-specs-and-release-date/ http://www.evo.co.uk/bentley/bentayga/20890/bentley-bentayga-phev-revealed-at-geneva-bentley-s-suv-goes-hybrid HONDA AND TOYOTA NOT DOING THE DIESEL DANCE It has been a busy day of statements from car makers, any one of which would be headline news on another day, but the new kept on coming. First I heard that Honda announced they were cutting diesels from their model line ups. And then Toyota popped up in my news feed, as they said they would stop the sales of diesels in Europe and shift all their focus on electric hybrids, from this year. They said it was due to customer reaction and you can see why, with less than 10% of their fleet being diesels, they’re hardly making a sacrifice. However it will not only generate good publicity but add to the pain for other car makers who commit to diesel, and Toyota are said to be one of the only ones who might achieve the strict new EU rules. More on that later on the show. Toyota has sold over 400,000 hybrids in Europe and are committed to soft hybrids rather than plug in. They aren’t expected to market pure BEV’s until at least 2020. In fact their recent TV ads featured charging stations covered in cobwebs, as they actively tried to take aim at those who want to plug in their cars, with campaigns for their luxury Lexus brand saying they charge themselves. Which sounds like you’re stretching the truth about as far as you can. They’re not magical, they just burn fossils https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Toyota-to-phase-out-diesel-cars-in-Europe-starting-this-year HONDA CONCEPT TO BE MADE Next do you remember the Honda Urban EV Concept unveiled a few months back at the Frankfurt Motor Show? It’s the cirlcle-eyed, tech laden concept with two bench seats for passengers. And now today at Geneva, Honda confirmed “a production version” is coming. Speaking during Honda’s 2018 Geneva motor show press conference, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe, Philip Ross confirmed the news, “A production version of this highly acclaimed concept will be introduced to Europe during late 2019, and in response to the positive feedback to this model, we expect to open order banks for the Urban EV during early 2019.” https://www.just-auto.com/news/geneva-show-honda-confirms-urban-ev-for-europe-in-2019_id181549.aspx BMW ADD i4 TO THEIR ELECTRIC RANGE Talking of concepts which have been confirmed, BMW said in Geneva the concept they showed off in Frankfurt will be coming. It’s part of a line up of 25 full BEVs or electrified cars. The concept was, what BMW called, the future of e-mobility. Now it will be made in Munich as the i4. And then they noted the specs which, at concept stage, don’t mean too much to be honest. 0-62mph in 4secs, top speed 120mph, 373 miles ranges and a new battery system made of magical fairy dust. Really the specs don’t mean a thing apart from what sort of segment they might be aiming this at, plus add a little range for optimism. So this puts it in Model S territory. However there’s no date set, and all they say is their range will be complete by 2025. So really having a car which can do what a Tesla did 10 years before it, isn’t too much to boast about. I wonder sometimes if auto execs and their PR handlers know things like this before making these kind of statements. Tesla was so far ahead of its time and continues to innovate, with increasing autopilot sophistication and the Model 3 interior, it doesn’t blow me away to hear a BMW will match a Tesla by 2025. https://www.motor1.com/news/235082/bmw-i4-electric-vehicle-confirmed/ PORSCHE CROSSOVER INTO, ER, CROSSOVERS Onto a car which is here, almost. The Porsche Mission E will be here in 2019 and plans are well advanced, including the installation of 800-volt charging stations at all their dealerships in North America to make use of the 350kW charging in the Mission-E. Yesterday at Geneva Porsche showed off a new model called the Mission E Cross Turismo. This is a crossover utility vehicle, which has all-wheel drive, four doors and room for cargo. The specs mirror that of the Mission-E so 310 miles range with 250 miles added in just 15 minutes of charging time. Although a future model, Porsche says it’s road-ready as it’s built on the work they’ve already done. Given the price it will be up there with Tesla Model S and X territory so will have to be very special, from the pictures, it does look it. https://techcrunch.com/2018/03/06/porsches-mission-e-cross-turismo-is-the-ev-crossover-you-want/ ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA ELECTRICS Aston Martin confirmed at Geneva they’re bringing back their legendary Lagonda brand for all their future electric cars. CEO Andy Palmer explained: “We believe people associate luxury in their cars with a certain traditional and even old fashioned approach because, to date, that is all that’s been available to them. Lagonda exists to challenge that thinking and prove that being modern and luxurious are not mutually exclusive concepts.” So they’re going more the way of Tesla than Bentley, in that automation and pure electrification. Their aim is to work with solid state batteries, they think 400 miles range is the sweet spot and they want to find a way to use induction charging to top the battery in 15 minutes. If some of that sounds a little pie in the sky, it is, because Aston Martin don’t have the deep pockets of their rivals. so they’ll need a partner to achieve those ambitions. https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1115581_aston-martin-to-make-lagonda-a-premium-ev-brand VW CHIEF SAYS GOVERNMENTS NEED DIESEL And now, if you felt the room go a little cold, let’s finally get onto someone who made big headlines yesterday – Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller. The more I think about this statement the more I don’t think he would have wanted the press to pick up on one phrase, when English is his second language. However let’s see what he said to Bloomberg: “Diesel will see a renaissance in the not-too-distant future because people who drove diesels will realize that it was a very comfortable drive concept. Once the knowledge that diesels are eco-friendly turns up in people’s minds, then for me there’s no reason not to buy one.” “The rules of the game in the EU in relation to climate protection and emissions goals on CO2 are so challenging that governments cannot do without diesel,” he said. And this from a company which would have an extra $30billion in the bank were it not for Dieselgate. From that we’ve seen cities introduce diesel bans in the future, other makers run away from the fuel, and even in Germany they’re talking about bans. The problem comes from European Union regulations to cut carbon dioxide. CO2 was the focus of pollution many years ago and diesel at the time was seen at the answer, without the full dire consequences on public health realised from particulates and Nitrogen Oxides. The next target on the horizon is an EU rule that fleet emissions from all cars sold by each brand should be 95g of CO2 per km by 2021. Meeting that would be slightly easier with diesel, but since Dieselgate, public opinion has turned. Saying that, Mueller told reporters VW won’t miss those targets. Which doesn’t make sense – if VW can hit the targets, why the panic? Because these are hefty fines coming for those that miss the target. Diesel sales fell 19% in Germany last month, and in the UK last month were 35% down from 50% in 2014. Last October investment research house MSCI warned all carmakers apart from Toyota are at risk of being fined by the EU for missing targets https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-05/volkswagen-ceo-predicts-renaissance-for-embattled-diesel-cars https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-autoshow-geneva/diesel-collapse-gives-automakers-carbon-headache-idUKKCN1GI0QN?utm_source=applenews WHILST THE UK GOVERNMENT SAYS THEY DON’T NEED DIESEL Finally, I don’t often read a government tweet, but this one caught my attention. In the UK a tax exemption for taxi drivers starts next month in April, to get an extra £1550 off a new electric cab. Zero emission taxis also have no road tax to pay. Each London diesel cab replied with an electric REX saves 7 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, and there are 75,000 on the roads. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond said: "This is a victory for the environment and new technologies, which I am determined to support as we build an economy fit for the future. Ensuring the air in our bustling towns and cities is free from pollution is part of our quest to become the first government to leave the environment in a better state than we found it. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/tax-break-to-help-black-cabs-go-green https://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/black-taxi-drivers-offered-1550-to-dump-diesel-a3782761.html?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#link_time=1520338376 Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
