HOT TOPIC Topic: Are the benefits for SA's agriculture sector in stronger trade with China Guest: Wolfe Braude, Agbiz Fruit Manager
Guest: Impact of Botswana's ban on fruit and vegetable from SA on the economy Guest: Wolfe Braude, fruit desk manager at the Agricultural Business Chamber of SA (Agbiz)
BPR Full Show 2/26: Jim "Meatball" Braude

Mark Braude's new biography, “Kiki Man Ray,” visits a place of perennial interest — Left Bank Paris in the 1920s — through the life of the singer, model, memoirist and muse. On this week's podcast, Braude says that his subject thoroughly captured the spirit of her age, “a mix of deep pain and a very deep love of life” that emerged after the First World War.We're used to reading about this age, Braude says, through the eyes of Americans in Paris, like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Kiki “represents something that sometimes gets overlooked,” he says, which is “the French contribution to this scene and to this moment. People like Kiki were part of the reason why expats found France and Paris so exciting.” She was “living on a completely different rhythm and in a completely different way. She was just undeniably herself, and wasn't putting on airs. And just loved life; she just wanted to do everything and meet everyone and go everywhere, and she did.”Also on this week's episode, Gregory Cowles and Elisabeth Egan talk about what they've been reading. John Williams is the host. Here are the books discussed in this week's “What We're Reading”:“River of Mountains” by Peter Lourie“Colony” by Anne Rivers Siddons“The Emperor's Tomb” by Joseph RothWe would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. Spiritualism Series, Episode # 4 of 4. When Ann Braude published her groundbreaking book Radical Spirits in 1989, critics did not like that Braude prominently linked the women's rights movement, particularly during the antebellum period, with Spiritualism. And even now, thirty years on, many histories still gloss over these important connections. So today we are exploring the close association of Spiritualism and the women's rights movement of the nineteenth century. Bibliography Braude, Ann. How do scientists study mediums? Science is not a body of knowledge; it is a set of tools for answering questions. Those tools can be applied to nearly any topic, even a controversial one like life after death. At the Windbridge Research Center, we use the scientific method to test hypotheses about mediums' abilities and characteristics and the impact of readings on the grieving. Competent scientists follow the data wherever they lead and do not make unfounded assumptions about what is possible or about how the world works in reality. If they did act on such assumptions, we would still think the sun circled the Earth. Assuming that we fully understand every phenomenon in the universe is illogical. Many phenomena exist that science can't explain. True science leaves room for discoveries. Just because something is “anomalous, the history of science suggests that this is simply not a good reason to ignore it” (Williams, 2019, p. 639). “Historically speaking, every major paradigm shift in science was literally a violation of the basic scientific principles of the time” (Westcombe, 2019, p. 619). All of the sciences, “including physics, periodically undergo conceptual shifts that account for previously unexplained observations” (Cardeña, 2019, p. 595). All practicing scientists don't believe that suggests “the existence of [psychic abilities] is somehow anti-scientific and thus can be safely ignored” (Braude, 2019, p. 543). One criticism of mediumship in general is that because we can't define clear mechanisms for how it works, any laboratory demonstration must be the result of fraud, error, chance, statistical manipulation, etc.

Dr Michelle Braude author of ‘The Food Effect Diet’ and ‘The Food Effect Diet Vegan’ is passionate about food and cooking working with her clients to make sure they can enjoy their food whilst achieving their weight loss goals. Working with a combination of science, choice and taste she has created the Food Effect Plan, a diet that is healthy and sustainable and has great results. Michelle shares some great advice in this episode from the importance of portion control to the benefits of whole grains, why starting the day with apple cider is beneficial and how to make your weight loss permanent. KEY TAKEAWAYS With the food effect diet, you can have what you want You will lose weight but the focus is on healthy eating and because it’s enjoyable it is sustainable as a lifestyle. People don’t always distinguish between healthy eating and healthy eating for weight loss Portion control is important even with healthy foods. Having two snacks is important and the mid-afternoon snack prevents overeating at dinner. You should aim to stop eating around 3 hours before sleeping A large part of the issues associated with gluten are actually about eating white refined bread and products filled with fats and sugars Whole natural foods are the key to a healthy diet A good quality probiotic has lots of benefits. Apple cider vinegar has been shown to have lots of benefits in terms of gut health, inflammation, helping with digestion. The Food Effect diet is completely balanced so whatever meals are selected there is no need to count calories or macros. In the attack phase, the intake is around 1,400 calories a day Sticking to the right foods is more important than counting calories. Stress is a huge factor, with higher cortisol levels leading to retention in fats. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’ve made the diet so it’s perfectly balanced and there is no need to count calories or macros’ ‘Lower and fat-free dairy always has a higher protein content than full fat equivalent ‘With The Food Effect Diet, you can have what you want’ VALUABLE RESOURCES High Performance Health podcast series Transform your sleep DNA optimization High Performance website The Food Effect website The Food Effect Dr. Instagram ABOUT THE HOST Angela Foster Angela is a Nutritionist, Health and Performance Coach. In this episode I interview Liza Braude-Glidden, co-founder and Executive Vice President of Culture and Sustainability at Beanfields Snacks in Los Angeles, which produces bean and rice chips. Beanfields is a family-owned business that was founded in 2011 by Reed Glidden, along with Liza, his wife, and Reed's brother, Roy Glidden with the aim of creating delicious, plant-based, non-GMO snacks, with beans as the primary ingredient. The company's products are sold across the US, Canada, Australia and other countries and in 2013 it became certified as a B Corp, cementing its commitment to business for good. While Reed and Roy Glidden brought more than 20 years' experience in the natural foods sector to the table, Liza was new to the business – although she's a natural entrepreneur with previous experience as part owner of a construction firm as well as having been active in a number of non-profits, including the Social Venture Network and the American Sustainable Business Association. Liza rolled out the first batch of bean and rice chips in the family kitchen before putting her background in arts, education, and writing to use in Beanfields' marketing campaigns. In this interview Liza discusses: • The benefits of B Corp certification • Why the business chose to be a (for-profit) Public Benefit Corporation • Contests as a way to raise your brand profile • How the company got featured on the Today Show • The one thing anyone contemplating leaving a salaried job to start a business should do • The importance of communities to grow your business • And much more Visit the Beanfields Snacks website Resources mentioned: Impact Hub Social Venture Network Brands mentioned in vegan business news roundup: Soul Burger Smith & Daughters Sainsbury's Bute Island Foods The Beer Plant PlantPure Nation FAIRR Coller Capital RESOURCES: My Online PR Course for Vegan Business Owners & Entrepreneurs: Vegans in the Limelight My book Vegan Ventures: Start and Grow an Ethical Business Follow Vegan Business Media on: Facebook Twitter Instagram Connect with me personally at: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn
