So was its breakthrough sales strategy: the Tupperware Party.Led in part by a charismatic housewife turned business innovator, Tupperware pioneered more than the party. Brownie Wise, and the company she came to represent, are behind a core sales technique that we might now recognize as influencer marketing. The company was so successful at its peak, it reached almost cult status. But it didn't last. On our latest episode: Tupperware's success and the company's demise. And how its descendants — in products, and in sales strategies — lived on. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

July 2, 1957. At the annual Tupperware jubilee in Florida, company VP Brownie Wise is admiring her handiwork. 1,200 people have convened on her private island for a luau—complete with live lobsters, orchid leis and prizes for Tupperware's top sellers. Most of the people here owe their job to her. That's because Brownie perfected a sales strategy that has made the innovative plastic product famous. Not to mention a cash cow. She's famous, too: Fortune and CBS News have hailed her as a savvy corporate leader. But tonight, at this fabulous celebration of the company's glittering success, storm clouds are gathering. How did a single mom from Michigan turn a simple household product into a juggernaut? And how did all go wrong? Special thanks to our guests: Alison Clarke, design history professor at University of Applied Arts - Vienna and author of Tupperware: The Promise of Plastic in 1950s America; and Bob Kealing, author of Life of the Party: The Remarkable Story of How Brownie Wise Built, and Lost, a Tupperware Party Empire. Up first, how about a bedtime story? This week it's the forgotten Story of Brownie Wise, the Ingenious Marketer Behind the Tupperware Party. Earl Tupper invented the container's seal, but it was a savvy, convention-defying entrepreneur who got the product line into the homes of housewives.
Up next, King Kong calls his agent to complain about all the headlines linking him with Eli Lily's new obesity drug. Let's end today's show with a heartwarming conversation between Frank and Dolores. Last time we visited with our favorite 1950s power couple they were talking about M&Ms going woke. This week they are here to share their observations about the homelessness crisis.

This week's episode begins with Craig's latest article for the Washington Post looking at the history of Seminole oversight of gaming in Florida. With a new gambling compact agreed to between the tribe and the state, the Seminole are expect to reap an even greater financial windfall due to the introduction of sports gambling in Florida. Our guest this week is Florida author Bob Kealing. Bob wrote a book all about one of Florida's most underappreciated entrepreneurs, Brownie Wise, who in the 1950s helped the Tupperware company build an empire by staging in-home Tupperware sales parties. Tupperware moved its corporate headquarters to the Orlando area in the 1950s and continues to be located there today. The book is titled, "Life of the Party: The Remarkable Story of How Brownie Wise Built, and Lost, a Tupperware Party Empire."

The Cookware Manufacturers Association has the privilege of having incredible people as our members. In this What’s Cooking with the Cookware Manufacturing Association episode, we are kicking off our Women in Housewares series in celebration of women’s history month. Host Fran Groesbeck has a conversation with Senior Principal Engineer of Amway, Sue Hoff, and the Transitioning Managing Director of the CMA, Penny Rosema to discuss their journey in the cookware industry. They share insights on how they moved up the ranks in the housewares industry and give advice on what they had learned as they achieved their milestones. Do you know the story of Rosalind Franklin? In 1962, three men received the Nobel Prize for their work on DNA. Not so surprisingly, a fourth member of the team went unacknowledged: the woman whose data and photographs led to their discovery. Essentially erased from scientific history, Rosalind Franklin was a focused and bright young scientist who was determined to make her presence known. What about Brownie Wise? The original girl boss, Brownie Wise capitalized on postwar optimism to build an empire that has made its way into every home in America. Though she did not invent Tupperware, she elevated it from random accessory to a suburban must-have by hosting parties that demonstrated its use. As sales soared, she became the first woman to appear on the cover of Business Week. These stories are examples of the power of women in industry. Bob Kealing | Life of the Party | Book Review by Lisa Woodruff On the last Monday of every month, my book review will highlight a female founder or business owner. This week, I am sharing Life of the Party: The Remarkable Story of How Brownie Wise Built, and Lost, a Tupperware Party Empire. This is the story of Brownie Wise. Although she was not the founder of Tupperware, she moved sales from a door to door model to the in home party sales we know today. She helped to create the direct sales model and influence the role of women working from home. You can also watch this as a video review on YouTube. Follow me on Goodreads! When Earl Tupper invetned 'Tupperware' he pulled off some impressive product and process innovation, turning waste from oil refining into bright housewares with a powerful seal which made them perfect for storing food. Yet the product didn't really sell - until he encountered Brownie Wise and her sales magic. At the heart of this fascinating success story of scaling innovation is the Tupperware party sales model - essentially setting out the basis of what we recognise today as 'social marketing' via networks. This podcast ezplores the story; you can find a transcript here.

Award-winning broadcast journalist and historian of Florida’s popular culture, Bob Kealing will discuss his book Life of the Party, about the charismatic businesswoman, Brownie Wise. Ahead of her time, Wise was the driving force making Tupperware into a household name, but was written out of the Tupperware history.
In this Food Non-Fiction episode, we tell the incredible true story of the Tupperware Party. Every few seconds, someone somewhere in the world is hosting a Tupperware Party. In a world where everything is sold online, Tupperware sells their product through Tupperware Parties. If you haven't attended a Tupperware party, it's unlikely that you own actual Tupperware brand Tupperware. That's right - Tupperware is a brand. It's one of those brands, like Frisbee and Kleenex, with a name that has become synonymous with the product. If Tupperware Parties didn't exist, it's possible that tupperware would not exist. And without tupperware, we might still be covering our dishes in shower caps. When tupperware first hit the market, it was a huge dud. Even with tons of marketing, the inventor, Earl Tupper, could not increase sales. However, while no one was buying tupperware from stores, people were buying tupperware from independent sales people hosting parties, utilizing the "party plan" sales method. This is because back when people were not familiar with tupperware, it had to be demonstrated for people to recognize what a great product it was. Brownie Wise was a superstar at selling tupperware through Tupperware Parties. Earl Tupper hired her to create a sales force and she created a huge and loyal network of salespeople.
