The last quarter of 2024 is somehow already upon us, and while it's definitely too early to be putting up the Christmas decorations (bombastically side-eyeing my local pub there), it is the time of year when many of us stop buying so much stuff for ourselves so we can write wish lists, and/or start saving up our hobby money to spend on the people we love instead. Which makes this a totally seasonally appropriate episode and not an excuse for Rebecca to launch a thorough examination into one of her many special interests: free-to-play games. The free-to-play model has quite a few negative connotations associated with it, not entirely unfairly; but the Indieventure gang are here to make the case that to dismiss all F2P titles is to ignore the wide range of what's on offer in the space, especially amongst indie games. To that end, prepare for a big old chat about our favourite free indies, including Battle For Polytopia; Butterfly Soup; Doki Doki Literature Club; If On A Winter's Night, Four Travelers; Indigo Park; Interview with the Whisperer; Lily's Well; Marie's Room; Max Gentlemen; Our Life: Beginnings & Always; Pineapple On Pizza; Samsara Room (by Rusty Lake); Simulacra: Pipe Dreams; Slice and Dice; Start Again: A Prologue (prototype prequel to In Stars & Time and not technically free it turns out, but very cheap and just generally germane to the conversation); South Scrimshaw; Sucker for Love: Prelude; Supermarket Simulator: Prologue; and the mobile port of Vampire Survivors. Two things of note here: one, this is maybe the first time we've dedicated significant podcast chat to the subject of indie mobile games specifically; and two, everyone who feels like we're constantly trying to bankrupt them with wishlistable titles, rejoice! This episode doesn't need to cost you a penny. Unless, that is, you decide to keep listening to our new temporary segment! With GOTY voting rapidly approaching, we've decided that it's not enough to check in with what we've all been playing every couple of months, and instead we're going to start updating you on all the cool stuff we've been checking out in every episode. Rachel and Liam have both had their professional reviewer hats on to check out The Plucky Squire and Shogun Showdown, respectively; while Rebecca — fashionably late after several months dedicated to playing hefty AAA games for her day job — has finally arrived at Thank Goodness You're Here, which turns out to be brilliant! Who knew?! As ever, we end on hyperfixations — and would you believe it, we've all been playing some video games? Rebecca has finally completed her three-year-long mission to play all 10 visual novels in that iconic series about gay lawyers, having just wrapped up the recently-released Ace Attorney Investigations Collection. Liam keeps the Capcom hype train chugging along with his love for another of their latest game preservation projects, the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. And you'll be pleased to know that we're all being very on-brand, because Rachel has been playing Frostpunk 2, which may be one of the very few city building simulators out there to actually narratively justify getting a sequel. Hey Podtimists, Welcome to another Dayquil episode. Chase is just a little sick but is still here talking about these games. David played a cat game and Chase played the best early access game in the world (okay a little hyperbolic but come on). Then we dove into the wonderful experience that was Butterfly Soup. This game was suggested to us by listener Novachild. Thanks for your suggestion! Also chase mentioned a youtube video about n64 recompilation, so here's a link to that video. --- Timestamps: (0:00) - Intro (2:11) - What David has been playing (2:25) - Mario Party Superstars (3:29) - Hades (4:47) - Dave the Diver (7:01) - Little Kitty, Big City (16:05) - What Chase has been playing (16:29) - Animal Well (23:04) - Hades 2 (44:33) - Chase's Podtimistic thing of the week (52:24) - David's Podtimistic thing of the week (57:28) - Good Games! Dear listeners, do you remember your high school years? Do you ever think back on those days, in the 9th inning of Summer as school was just waiting for you at home plate? Were you ever caught up in the rush of young love and the discovery of your sexuality, wondering if you dared try to steal second base? Have you ever wondered what would happen if you asked a podcaster who knows less than nothing about baseball to write not one, but two separate opening gags for a baseball-themed episode? This week, Sara and Runa tackle (which i don' t think is a thing you do in baseball) the absolutely delightful Butterfly Soup 2 (2022), a sequel to the Butterfly Soup visual novel we covered in our 25th episode. We return to Oakland, California, primarily in 2008 and 2009, to follow our four young queer teens as they struggle through high school, navigate their difficult family lives, process the overwhelming world around them, and get up to a lot of baseball and baseball-adjacent shenanigans. Once again, we follow Diya, Min, Akarsha, and Noelle through their days as they play Mario Golf, film group project skits, play elaborate games of gay chicken, discover useful tips and tricks to confront their internal biases and think about gender, and think about the cataclysmic gulf between their lives and the lives of their parents and families. We left these kids last time after Diya and Min had reunited after many years apart, finally confronted their feelings for one another, started dating, and got all four of the main characters banned for life from the ice cream and snow cone shop near campus. In this direct sequel, we begin by following Akarsha's rapid descent into distraught gay turmoil as she realizes she's falling hard for Noelle, who might even be straight for all she knows! What's more, Akarsha adamantly refuses to put herself at risk and expose any vulnerability, which makes her plans to seduce Noelle... a bit obtuse. Meanwhile, Diya and Min are dating happily and spending every day together in gay joy, apart from the moments when Diya tries, and fails, to connect with her own mother in even simple ways and struggles to even conceive of a day when she might come out to her. Min, on the other hand, still struggles with the abuse of her father, fears that she might fall into similar patterns of outrage and anger, and the difficulty of confronting intracommunity racism and bigotry. Noelle takes a trip to Taiwan for her grandmother's funeral and, while there, confronts the distance between herself, her parents, the rest of her family, and a culture she struggles to grasp even when she's reaching for it with both arms. Then, to make matters worse, it seems that Akarsha has saddled her with some...unnecessary feelings. How will any of this go, and most importantly: Will they win their no stakes baseball game against another high school club!?As always, if you enjoy our episodes please give us a rating and write a brief review wherever you listen to podcasts - we don't have an advertising budget so your reviews and recommendations are one of the main ways new people find out about our show! Strike! You're out! Because you were too flustered talking to your crush in class and now everyone at baseball club knows you're gay! This week, Sara and Runa experience the unbridled joy, the tumultuous ups and downs of high school baseball for a group of queer Asian-American kids living in Northern California - In short, playing through Butterfly Soup. While one of our hosts knows a fair amount about baseball and the other knows almost nothing (though a fair amount about Blaseball), Butterfly Soup is full of extremely relatable and at times painfully familiar experiences. As we follow a group of awkward teens navigating high school in 2008, we shift through the perspectives of Diya, Min Seo, Akarsha, and Noelle to see how each of them is dealing with the stress of life, parental expectations, trying to sort out their sexuality, and also oh my god where did you get that knife put that down!?Butterfly Soup (2017) by Brianna Lei is an amazing, concentrated hit of dopamine paired with a postcard from your high school self, all wrapped up in a perfect pastel color scheme and paired with a recorder cover of My Heart Will Go On. Set largely in the fall of 2008 in Oakley, California, the story follows four girls through their awkward and anxiety-filled daily lives. Filled with a pitch perfect balance of humor and poignancy and set against the backdrop of the political news of the late 00's as gay marriage rights were heavily embattled on the local and national stage, Butterfly Soup is an amazing experience that works both as a timeless coming-of-age story and an excellent period piece capturing the experience of a queer Asian-American teen growing up when Proposition 8 and the San Francisco marriages were in the headlines. As the story kicks off, we first meet Diya: a tall, strong, and athletic girl who's also timid and bad at interacting with just about everyone in most circumstances. She opens up more easily to her friends though, especially Min Seo, who she's known since childhood. Min Seo is short, rowdy, aggressive to the point of violence, charmingly over-confident at times, and completely smitten with Diya. Early on, however, Min Seo's parents move away to Florida and she and Diya are separated - just before they part, though, they promise to keep playing baseball so that they can one day be reunited on the field.Back in high school, in 2008, Diya meets up with her friend Akarsha, who is an endearing memelord wearing an iconic 90's windbreaker, and then later with Noelle, a girl who tries to be strict and rational but often fails miserably as she gets drawn into bickering with Akarsha or supporting everyone's antics. Their daily lives are stressful but routine for a time, until two major events shift the trajectory of Diya's life: A baseball club starts recruiting at school, and then at this baseball club meeting she reunites with Min Seo. Oh also she realizes about this time that she's a Lesbian, which is just one more thing to figure out as she tries to make it through the year.As always, if you enjoy the show please rate us and write a review if you have time - it helps tremendously and we read and appreciate each one! It's the first episode of 2019 and we're all very unfocused! But that didn't stop us from talking about Butterfly Soup, which is a very enjoyable visual novel that we liked quite a bit! Wowee.
Let’s place is currently under a curse of us not being able to record in a timely manner and the editor has been sick and also busy with American Thanksgiving festivities so this is getting uploaded as soon as it could be reasonably done. Anyway, it’s time to give a leg up to one of the most poorly received genres on this show: Visual novels. Guests Emily and Frankie have joined forces to help us right this wrong. And it ends up being a little too righted. YOUR GAMES THIS WEEK ARE: Butterfly Soup, for PC; one night, hot springs, for PC and Mobile; Lone Wolf, for PC; We Know The Devil, for PC; And Hustle Cat, for PC. You can find the complete list of ranked games at bit.ly/letsplace.
This week, in honor of Election Day, we’re talking all things politics and games! Specifically, we’re talking about how games address (or don’t address) social issues. Topics include: Night In the Woods’ depiction of Appalachian poverty, Butterfly Soup’s handling of Prop 8, and how poorly games like Red Dead 2 handle all sorts of things. We hope you all voted, sweet babies! Follow us on Instagram!Or Facebook! How about Twitter?Or shoot us an email at ifitsgayweplay@gmail.com!
On this final episode of IndieComplete, the crew jumps into indie game Butterfly Soup!
Riding our segues into oblivion, we switch between talking about BTUs, people hogging DDR machines, advanced gungeoneering, and light gun games of all shapes and sizes. Ancient food mascots are coming back in force, and we find out what games everyone feels the strongest about so far this year. Games include The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, Yo! Noid II: Enter the Void, Trials Fusion, Enter the Gungeon, Spider Ponds, Butterfly Soup, Splatoon 2, Tetris, Mario Bros., Battletoads, Killer Instinct, NFL Blitz 2000, Time Crisis III, Frogger, Galak-Z: Variant S, Caves of Qud, and Overwhelm. Hi Allan. A: Ich arbeite gerade für Wooga. LGBTQI-Themen in Videospielen. A: Ja, da gibt es heutzutage glücklicherweise mehrere.

We have a chill post-Memorial Day Weekend episode and go over the very chill “cute girls camping” anime series Yuru Camp, before getting deep into the trippy sci-fi film Contact. Discussion topics include the horrors of being an introvert and other people wanting to do things with you, anime food porn, the gripping drama of scientists trying to get funding, and how the “eccentric technocrat billionaire” trope has not aged well in our current dystopian times. We've got a bevy of games to talk through in our May preview, but how many of them will make the cut into our top picks? Meanwhile, Bobby's been gaming on the go while he was out town with Chrono Trigger and Owlboy, and has been mainlining God of War and Swords of Ditto when he has been home. Chase, on the other hand has been trying a few new things: Minit, Code of Princess and Butterfly Soup. We're one away from Episode 100 on this edition of The Casual Hour! Let's Talk! CW: mention of suicideIt’s a baseball pun! This week, we think video games are an inherently queer method of telling stories— find out how you feel about that! Topics include: Gone Home, Butterfly Soup (for the baseball pun, get it?), Kai’s very successful performance, gender policing in Breath of the Wild (again). ...Hey, did you get the baseball pun? We take a break from the long and complicate for the short and fun this month as the reading crew crack open the delightfully breezy Butterfly Soup, by Brianna Lei. Baseball, childhood pressures, the way the 90s taught us racism, and more all take their turns at bat as we slide into home with this funny, charming little game. Sports metaphor.
We've finally done it, we've finally played a bad game! It only took three episodes. But that doesn't mean it's a bad podcast, as the Novelettes all pile in for a lengthy episode about the ups and downs of drink making and people chatting in Glitch City with the cyberpunk mess that is VA-11 HALL-A. A whole array of 'delights' await you in this episode, as we talk about our least favorite tropes and lament men writing 'cool' women as a thing because it never, ever works. Next month we're playing the lesbian baseball visual novel Butterfly Soup! It's available for whatever price you seem appropriate on itch.io!You can support Jen and Six on the Scanline Media Patreon, and support Em and the network on the Abnormal Mapping Patreon. You can find Novel Not New on iTunes! Please send all your questions and comments about this game or anything else to podcast@abnormalmapping.com!
We haven't played too much of it, but that doesn't stop us from talking Monster Hunter: World! Celeste gets called out as an early GOTY contender and we jump back into Horizon Zero Dawn with the Frozen Wilds DLC. Everyone has a little high school flashback with our visual novel game of the week, Butterfly Soup. Out of Bounds covers a wide range this week with talk on Devilman Crybaby, Distant Worlds, Movie Pass, and Friends at the Table. Play next episode's free game, The Tearoom. Sarah, Chris, and Ruben couldn't let the greatest year of video games (ever) pass by without comment. GOTY lists are so last year, but that doesn't them from giving props to Horizon Zero Dawn, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Super Mario Odyssey. They also make resolutions to rescue PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, and NieR: Automata from the game backlog pile. In the second half, they talk Rogue One vs. The Last Jedi, Awesome Games Done Quick, and weekly livestreams from Adobe. The recommended game of the week for next time is Butterfly Soup. Music: "Intro" by Slime Girls, "AM2R Title" (modified) by Milton Guasti, and "Uplifting Pop" (modified) by Sounds Like An Earful
Suggested Talking points: Mario Odyssey, Wolfenstein II, SteamWorld Dig 2, Gorogoa, Prey, Heat Signature, Floor Kids, SUPERHOT, Rimworld, Tumbleseed, Blossom Tales, Celeste, Quadrilateral Cowboy, Rimworld, Heroes of the Storm, World of Warcraft, Little Nightmares, Butterfly Soup, Subsurface Circular, What Remains of Edith Finch, Labo, Dark Souls Remaster, The World Ends With You
Happy New Year, everyone! We get 2018 off to a perfectly smooth start as Anita leaps us forward in time by launching us right into a conversation about the Doctor Who Christmas Special, which marked both the end of Peter Capaldi's tenure as the Doctor and the introduction of Jodie Whittaker, the first woman to ever fill the Doctor's shoes. We also talk about Carolyn's favorite game of last year, the heartwarming and hilarious Butterfly Soup, look at some of the latest entertainment news, and conclude with the customary round of "What's Your Deal?" So make some hot cocoa, toss a few more coals on the fire, and get cozy with us for the first Feminist Frequency Radio of the year! You can find Butterfly Soup at https://brianna-lei.itch.io/butterfly-soup
On this week's episode, host Josiah Renaudin is joined by a familiar cast to determine the top 10 games of 2017. The crew includes podcaster, past GameSpotter, and current freelancer, Tom Mc Shea; the managing editor at Feminist Frequency, podcaster, streamer, and writer, Carolyn Petit; and game designer and writer for Divinity Original Sin 2 and former GameSpot reviews editor, Kevin VanOrd. They discuss games such as Universal Paperclips, Hellblade, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Resident Evil 7, The Evil Within 2, Butterfly Soup, and much more.
Siempre me confundo. Suenan: LCD Soundsystem: 45:33 (Pt. 2) Mark Bothersbaugh: Thor: Ragnarok Led Zeppelin: Inmigrant Song

It's too hot and we're having trouble thinking straight on this week's episode. Despite the heat, we manage to talk about Destiny 2, The Witness, Absolver, and Butterfly Soup.
