There’s only so many times my voice can handle podcasting like that. You’re taking the experience away from other people. Welcome back to the podcast! Today, we’re going to be talking about A Hat in Time, a 3D platformer developed by Gears for Breakfast that was largely crowd funded and even published by Humble Bundle. 3D platformers are a novelty in recent years and this type of funding really speaks to how the community that wants them is underserved, and what we got was a game that really wears its inspiration on its sleeve. With a lot of design sensibility taken from other games and references sprinkled throughout, it would be easy to call this game derivative. In reality, though, the game is very earnest and genuinely does a lot to put its own spin on the genre. We’re going to be talking about the different platforming mechanics and where they feel right and wrong, how the player movement in the game informs what level designs work the best, and we try to get Andy a job. Thank you for listening today, we had wanted to talk about this game for a while and things fell into place this time around, so I’m pretty excited to hear if any of you guys played it as well and what you thought of it, given that the genre has been in retrograde outside of Nintendo for a number of years. Next time…well, next time we’re getting started with a bigger month than we’ve had in a long time. It’s October, so we’re going to be talking about some horror games both here and over on Pocket, but next episode specifically is actually somehow really our 100th episode. We’re going to be getting JJ, Dan, Janelle and Steven back on to talk about The Jackbox Party Pack, collectively, and probably get very sentimental and nostalgic about the podcast. And before that it’s coming up on the 3rd, which, if you didn’t know, is NOCLIP day and our 5th anniversary, so we’ll have a bloopers compilation coming out then as well. And we’ll follow that up with as many horror games as we can fit in the rest of the month and maybe even bleed into November because why not? Anyway, love you all, thank you for listening, hope you have a good weekend. Have some fun.
GamesBeat editor Jeff Grubb is back from vacation to get mad about people who don't like the GameCube with reviews editor Mike Minotti. The pair discuss that, Rocksteady's Suicide Squad, and Sony's State of Play -- turns out Spider-Man is an exclusive Temtem or something? Also, Nintendo and PlayStation are making a lot of money, and Apple doesn't want Microsoft to make money on iOS. Mike and Jeff have also spent time playing Fall Guys, which is a delight. They talk about the game's success and long-term prospects. They also discuss CrossCode, A Hat In Time, Flight Simulator, Frog Gractions, Panzer Paladin, and Carrion. Als 3D Jump 'n' Run Fan kommt man eigentlich nicht an "A Hat in Time" vorbei.

Hello, my spookies and cuties! This week on NEP, we have a special guest: Jonas Kaerlev of Gears For Breakfast, creators of A Hat In Time. Oni Dino and Galen chat with him about love for 3D platformers, game design philosophies, and a ton of underrated gems spanning across genres in gaming. In particular Jonas shares how they used their own branch of Unreal 3 on Switch, the necessity of trying new things in game development, and how they overcame Switch’s limitations and created an amazing experience without any big compromises. We then cover Doom Eternal’s delay news and all the new details we’ve yet to discuss with Luigi’s Mansion 3. Gooigi is still gross. Partner mechanic should’ve been Daisy. We stand by that. If you’re enjoying NEP, please consider giving us a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts, aka new iTunes. It’s incredibly helpful in getting us exposed to new listeners through algorithms, so we would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you for listening! Timestamps 03:19 – A chat with the creator of “A Hat In Time”: Jonas! Founder, director, designer, writer, programmer! 41:33 – News: Galarian Ponyta is an icon, a legend, and she is the moment. Exclusive to Pokemon Shield. Galen talks about the competitive play aspect, and Oni Dino accidently offends an entire fandom... 47:21 – Doom Eternal delayed on all platforms. Switch version coming later than others. Doom 64 as a pre-order bonus on all platforms. Industry crunch and the surprising move that Bethesda made. Also, what is a “port” exactly? 59:06 – Luigi’s Mansion 3 discussion! New gameplay, new trailers. Animations and art direction discussion; Canadian developers, Next Level Games, are knocking it out of the park. And a few concerns! And Gooigi is gross, it should’ve been Daisy. And inevitable talk about how much we love Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. 1:11:50 – Additional DLC (and Oni Dino offends another group of people) 1:18:59 – Listener mail: (Oni Dino accidentally offends our entire listener-base) Send us an email and we’ll discuss it! We begin our 3D Platformer Month with a modern loveletter to 90s platformers like Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario 64. Hat Kid runs afoul of the Mafia, and she must collect her hourglasses (which are spaceship fuel) from a planet full of colorful jerks. The game runs high on charm, but it also runs right into our fundamental problems with this genre. So we try to put on our "3D Platformer Appreciator" hats and see what's good here and what falls short.

Before we give you a descriptive break down of the episode, the boys would like to apologise for the audio quality this week. They didn't have their usual equipment and had to make do with using the microphone built in to the laptop. We hope it isn't too much of a struggle to get through, but as you'll see now, the content SHOULD make up for it. - As the episode begins, Tobe and Luke make it clear that recording on the release day of Spider-Man was not ideal, and they want to go home and play. Ron hadn't downloaded it. - Questions take them out of their need for Spider-Man as they're asked if they starred in, or directed, a pornographic movie what would the name be? This quickly turns into a pun-off. - Then they discuss where they would be positioned in a Human Centipede situation. So expect some pretty gross conversation during this question. - Luke Cage season 2 is briefly detailed by Luke, we bet you can't guess where he lands on it? - They talk trailers, after missing the opportunity to talk about Predator last week, and Luke mentions the new Halloween trailer. - More puns. - Captain Marvel news is discussed, and Ron chooses the worst week to eat crisps on the mic. He assures us he's sorry now, but would you believe him? - They then move on to the announcement of who will be playing Geralt of Rivia, from Witcher. More puns to follow. - Luke talks "A Hat in Time", while Ron accidentally googles images of the PC mods, instead of actual images. Ron talks "The Escapists" again, and what a bargain they were. What better way to celebrate Halloween than talking about a movie series that birthed a million cosplays? (I guess we could have talked an actual horror series, but whatever.) Patrick Fleury finally returns to the show and records alongside John once again, kicking things off with Patrick's thoughts on Destiny 2 so far, with a sprinkle of Star Wars Battlefront 2 beta impressions thrown in for spice. John also dishes out his thoughts on the adorable indie platformer A Hat in Time to balance out all the gunplay. After that, the two take a deep dive into one of their favorite film series, as we tackle Christopher Nolan's iconic take on Batman in order of release. Expect observations on character reinventions, brief thoughts regarding other Batman series, what each entry does better and worse than the others, Patrick's adoration for Bane, John's adoration for The Dark Knight in general, A smorgasbord of Christian Bale impressions at the end, and possibly the first recording of someone wiping their nose with a laptop caught on microphone. And it probably goes without saying that we spoil the crap out of each movie, but fair warning regardless. (As well as a fair warning that John being both tired and excited while recording this led to a lot of very fast talking on his end.) 07:12 - Destiny 2 thoughts 16:55 - A Hat in Time thoughts 27:44 - Batman Begins/The Dark Knight/The Dark Knight Rises talk (Spoilers for all three) Show Twitter (Send feedback, questions, and requests!): https://twitter.com/sketchwatchplay Show Facebook (Send feedback, questions, and requests!): https://www.facebook.com/sketchwatchplay Show homepage: http://sketchwatchplay.blogspot.com/ John's Twitter: https://twitter.com/Behonkiss Patrick's Twitter: https://twitter.com/fleuryp Chris's Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChristopTheWade Watch John's video review of the indie platformer A Hat in Time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vx_SSu2V_E

First there were Donkey Kong 64 2ish rumors. Then Hat in Time. Lobodestroyo. New Banjo-Kazooie rumors. Okay, okay, you get the point! So what's the big deal? Well, listen up! Because there's a new dynamic studio from the creators of Donkey Kong Country and GoldenEye that's ready to kick some serious excitement into 3D platforming. IT'S PLAYTONIC GAMES!

Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright HD (there are some small issues but the first case is free-to-play) What is Alice Playing? Monaco (Multiplayer is fun, single player is a bit lacking) Prime World: Defenders (Not sure she recommends it) Persona 4: Arena (Total recommendation) What are we looking forward to? Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Dual Destinies Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (and the BlazBlue anime!) A Hat In Time (you can still back the Kickstarter!)
