We wish we had better news as we come back from an unexpected sick week off, but the industry continues to downsize, with news of a long running gaming magazine in the US ceasing production suddenly. The horrible language of internal communications has been exposed by the larger gaming media, leaving many of us to again question the competence of so many executives in this industry. The topic comes up yet again- are we headed towards another Video Game Crash? Or are we in one. We discuss this and much more, including SOME positives, like DarkSakura's trip to California Extreme on another episode of the longest running video game podcast, Orange Lounge Radio! Joseph Goodman runs Goodman Games. He has written a number of RPG titles, including DCC RPG, DragonMech, and many dungeon crawl adventures. His best work, though, is mentoring the amazing group of creators who have come to publish their work through Goodman Games. Joseph is also well known within the DCC RPG community as the Dark Lord, but in a very dear way. I had the pleasure to work with Goodman Games a few times, but I've always been an admirer of not only their work with games, but especially in the way they ciultivate creativity and community. In this chat we talk about many great topics, including game design, doing business as a game, creativity, nature as inspiration, the famous Appendix N, and parenthood. This was a fantastic chat, Joseph is always very generous with his wisdom so I recommend you listen to this one closely! So, listen up, and get weird with us! It was announced this week that after 18 years, the Xbox 360 Online store will be closing. Does this officially make the Xbox 360 consoles a brick now? Not at all really, as it turns out. We talk about what Microsoft is closing access to, but also the surprising amount of ways content will still be available as we kick off tonight's show. This week I delve into the controversial and extreme haunted attraction known as McKamey Manor, an extreme haunted house attraction that has sparked intense debate and controversy. Located in Summertown, Tennessee, McKamey Manor is not your typical haunted house attraction. It bills itself as an extreme haunt experience that challenges its participants physically and mentally. The experience is not for the faint of heart; it involves extreme simulations of torture, confinement, and other traumas. What I'm trying to say is, you have to have at least one loose screw to want to participate. Participants must sign a 40-page waiver, undergo a background check, and pass a physical and mental exam before being allowed to take the tour. Once inside, participants are subjected to a grueling, hours-long experience that includes simulated drowning, extreme temperatures, and physical and psychological torture. The attraction has garnered significant criticism, with some describing it as a form of torture and exploitation. The owner, Russ McKamey, has defended the experience as a form of "survival horror" that pushes participants to their limits, claiming that no one has completed the experience to this day. However, many former participants have spoken out against the attraction, describing their experiences as traumatic and violating. Some have accused McKamey of manipulating and gaslighting participants and have criticized the attraction's lack of transparency and oversight. Exploring the complex issues surrounding McKamey Manor, including the ethics of extreme haunt experiences, the role of consent, and the legal and regulatory challenges posed by extreme attractions- this episode will force you to ask yourself, “how far is too far?” Have you checked out the new, super blank website? TikTok looks to be taking further steps to embed games within the platform. This comes after recent acquisitions for the parent company. What might be the long term vision for TikTok? Could this potentially include cloud gaming in the future? Why does social media try so hard to inject gaming into it anyway? TCW Podcast Episode 080 - Vector Lights We look at the arcade industry and the circumstances that led to the use of vector monitors in arcade games. While not as well remembered today, and with fewer systems still around, vector played an important role in the development of video games. Vector provided the detail and capabilities that were not yet available in traditional raster-based systems. However in due time Raster met, and then exceeded, the capabilities of vector systems, and with the lower cost of maintenance for raster vector has faded into history. hen it it’s hot, and nothing new is happening, the day just goes by slower, I mean, what exactly do you do with that kind of time? We have a few suggestions, but we decide to try and poll our answers together like a bunch of assholes; Press Pause Radio has the summer doldrums, and we talk about what our plans are during this break in games—and of course, our stupid backlogs too. Aside from talking about stuff like the World Cup, The ‘Noid, and EVO 2014; we also argue over Mighty No. 9’s stupid funding campaign, Watch Dogs, California Extreme, Shovel Knight, Potato Salad, Mario Kart 8, and World of Warcraft—it was an episode that had a lot more range than usual. Persona 4, The Wolf Among Us, Bravely Default, Another World, and other games also get talked about a lot, along with Andrew being a new daddy and the idea of actually going outside…on a video game podcast? Yeah, it’s true, we really do entertain the subject. Last weekend, Jorge, Hanah, and I went on a field trip to California Extreme. Best described as "a classic arcade games show," it's a celebration of historical video and pinball games and a chance to literally play with history without having to worry about running out of quarters. After spending some time on the show floor, we regrouped to talk about our some of the standout games, our arcade wishlists, and the future of classic gaming. We cover a lot, but it's impossible to do justice to everyone's favorite arcade games, so feel free to jump into the comments with your thoughts! To listen to the podcast:- Subscribe to the EXP Podcast via iTunes here.
