Pixar's Up: Show, Don't Tell Your B2B Marketing Message

Remarkable Marketing

So many marketers use dialogue as a crutch. They spell out what their product is, how their audience could benefit from it, and wrap things up with a run-of-the-mill CTA.But you don't need dialogue to make a powerful B2B marketing campaign. In fact, you might not need words at all. This week, we're looking at the iconic opening montage from Pixar's “Up.” The “Married Life” scene tells the story of the film's main character, Carl's marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Ellie. We follow them from youth to old age – and Ellie's death. These moments have no dialogue, instead letting the music, color, and shape tell Carl's backstory. The animators didn't tell us about Carl's life – they showed it to us. The result? Perhaps the most iconic scene in Pixar's storied history – and that's no easy feat. And we think your B2B marketing can leverage these same techniques to communicate your message so much more effectively than a voiceover ever could.About Pixar's “Up”“Up” is a 2009 animated movie by Pixar. It was directed by Pete Docter and co-director Bob Peterson, who also wrote the story along with Tom McCarthy. The original score is by Michael Giacchino.“Up” follows 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen as he rigs up his house with balloons in an attempt to fly to Paradise Falls and fulfill a promise to his late wife. He is joined by Russell, an 8-year-old Junior Wilderness Explorer, who has stowed away by clinging to the porch as the house lifted off its foundation. Together, they navigate the treacherous journey to the falls. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Pixar's “Up”: Let music do the emotional heavy lifting. The “Married Life” montage tells the story of Carl's marriage to Ellie. Though the two tragically discover they can't have children, they find hope in their childhood promise of trekking across the world to Paradise falls. The scene ends with Ellie's funeral – and the promise left unfulfilled. These emotional moments are even more powerful because of composer Michael Giacchino's score. In an interview, Giacchino said that the “Married Life” montage was the most difficult scene to write for. In order to make the scenes most effective, he wrote simple music for the scenes – or even opted not to score some of the most emotional moments. This restraint gave the scenes a gentle, melancholic feel, rather than a melodramatic one.Tell a story with color and shape. Whether they know it or not, viewers use basic visual cues to put together and understand a scene nearly instantaneously. So much of a scene can be told through these basic visual cues like color, and shape. In “Up”, each character is designed around a shape and color that conveys something about their personalities. Carl is blue and a square, Ellie is pink and a circle, and Russell is yellow and egg-shaped. The animators also adjusted the color palettes for scenes based on their emotional content: they used saturated colors in joyful scenes and drab colors in sad scenes. These visual cues may seem basic, but the connotations of specific colors and shapes will create instant context for your ad's viewers.Focus on facial expressions and body language. We don't just communicate with our words. The “Married Life” montage uses body language to show Carl and Ellie's feelings towards each other. When Ellie points at a cloud, we see Carl's blissful expression. We watch Ellie flinch as Carl smashes their savings jar again, telling us everything we need to know about how Ellie feels at that moment. Through intentional camera composition, editing, and directing, you can communicate a story with no words at all.Key Quotes*”By showing, not telling, especially in this example, it forces you to fill in the blanks with words that you understand or emotions that you can connect with.” - Dane Eckerle*”When you show a story without any V.O., we have no idea where we're going. So each thing happens sequentially and it builds on itself. You don't know where it's going. But by the end of it, you totally get it.” - Ian Faison*”If you go on TikTok, they're telling, not showing at all. There's someone speaking to you, there's captions, there's big text on the screen and you're seeing and hearing everything [being] spoon fed to the point where now, moments like this land that much harder, because I'm not used to using my imagination as much. This technique will work better now than it would've 15 years ago because people are so used to being spoon fed stuff. So it's all the more relevant today.” - Dane Eckerle*”It comes down to B2B companies seeing their audience as people first and not just other businesses. You are talking to people who have real needs and different personas and different target audiences.” - Anagha Das*”You're marketing a journey. So as a marketer, take a snapshot of your target customer at the midpoint of their journey, and then show the story of their journey.” - Ian FaisonTime Stamps[2:12] Tell me more about Pixar's "Up"[5:35] How did Pixar get audience buy-in within the first few minutes?[10:37] How did composer Michael Giacchino craft music to tell a story?[13:07] How did the storyboard artists use color and composition to convey meaning?[14:55] Why is showing-not-telling more powerful today than ever?[16:45] Examples of show-don't-tell in marketing[19:27] How do I market a customer journey?LinksWatch Pixar's UpLearn more about how Michael Giacchino wrote the scoreHow did Pixar design the characters?See how Apple used show-don't-tell in their accessibility campaignAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to Matt Asner, son of seven-time Emmy winner, actor Ed Asner. Of course, most of us know Ed Asner as Lou Grant from The Mary Tyler Moore Show as well as the dramatic series Lou Grant that followed. But as Matt told us on this episode, Ed Asner was generational. To some, it was his seventies and eighties television work that made an impact. To others, it might be his work (and his voice) from a host of animated series in the 90s from Batman or Superman or Spider Man. Some know him as Santa in the Christmas classic Elf. Others know him as Carl Fredricksen in Pixar's Up. Still others know him as the bad guy from the sixties film They Call Me Mr.Tibbs and even others from mini-series like Roots and Rich Man, Poor Man. Regardless of how you know the gruff but lovable actor, Ed Asner was known as a consummate professional, head of the Screen Actors Guild, tireless activist for a variety of causes, and Matt tells us all about them on the latest episode. We also get to hear about Gavin MacLeod's bubble gum obsession, “Uncle” Ted Knight, The Compass Players who Ed was a member of that birthed Second City, Paul Newman & Fort Apache The Bronx, death threats as well as family LA haunts like Art's Deli, Madam Wong's West and The Ed Asner Family Center. The Center promotes self-confidence, balance and wellness in differently-abled individuals and their families. And it's all next on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a listen. Oh Mr. Grant!

The Binar-1 satellite was launched into orbit on Sunday afternoon (Perth time) aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, US. The craft, which takes its name from the Noongar word for fireball, will now head to the International Space Station, where astronauts will release the satellite into low-Earth orbit. It marks the first time a WA-made satellite has been launched into space. Phil Bland, the director of Curtin University's Space Science Technology Centre, which built the device, says it won't be the last. "You're not succeeding in space unless you're flying stuff, so we are building the technology that is going to allow us to fly all the time," Mr Bland said. The Binar team are hoping to launch at least seven small spacecraft over the next two years, to prove their technology works. If it does, it could make a massive difference to the way Western Australians are able to access space. Binar researcher and PhD student Ben Hartig wrote about how important that would be for Australia. In a career of remarkable longevity, Asner acted into his 90s. Asner was integral to the success of the situation comedy Mary Tyler Moore, which ran on CBS from 1970 to 1977 and boasted one of the best assemblages of actors and writers in US TV history. Later in his career, Asner became a successful voice actor for animated TV shows and films and played Santa Claus in several projects, including the 2003 Will Ferrell comedy Elf. In the sentimental 2009 animated film Up, Asner provided the voice for the main character, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen, who after the death of his beloved wife ties balloons to his house and floats off to fulfil his fantasy of exploring South America, only to find he has a youthful stowaway. The movie won an Oscar for best animated film and a nomination for best picture. Asner remained a busy actor into his 90s with appearances in such series as Dead to Me and Cobra Kai. He died of natural causes at his home in the Tarzana, Los Angeles.1st September 2021 – 15th anniversary of Idiocracy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy The film, written by Beavis & Butthead creator Mike Judge and Tropic Thunder co-writer Etan Cohen, imagines a world 500 years into the future, when civilization has all but collapsed because humanity has become irretrievably stupid. It illustrates how this happened with a voice-of-God narrator and a comparative case study: the high IQ yuppie couple who sensibly wait and wait to have kids until they can't anymore on one side, and the trailer trash meatheads (really no other way to describe them) with the giant brood of neglected children and Maury Povich-esque sex life who keep procreating at an alarming rate on the other. The film was not screened for critics, and the distributor, 20th Century Fox, was accused of abandoning it. Despite its lack of a major theatrical release, which resulted in a mere $495,000 gross at the box office, the film received positive reviews from critics and has become a cult film. During the 2016 presidential primaries, writer Etan Cohen and others expressed opinions that the film's predictions were converging on accuracy, a sentiment repeated by director Judge during the general election. At the time, Judge also compared Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump—who later won and became President of the United States—to the film's wrestler-turned-president, Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho. When asked about predicting the future, he remarked, "I'm no prophet, I was off by 490 years."Remembrances31st August 1965 – E.E.Smith - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._E._Smith Edward Elmer Smith, publishing as E. E. Smith, Ph.D. and later as E. E. "Doc" Smith, was an American food engineer (specializing in doughnut and pastry mixes) and science-fiction author, best known for the Lensman and Skylark series. He is sometimes called the father of space opera. Smith's work is strongly identified with the beginnings of US pulp sf as a separate marketing genre, and did much to define its essential territory: galactic space dominated by Galactic Empires, these usually being run by humans, though Aliens appear frequently, not only as Villains; Space Opera plots, featuring Heroes and their Inventions, are the norm; Wars rage across the parsecs. But although Smith's his protagonists fit comfortably into this universe, it is the case that his greatest protagonists, the Lensmen, are also soldiers: willing employees in a higher cause. His earlier heroes may be freelance, and seem in retrospect singularly detached from the universes they dazzle, but his later heroes – like Kim Kinnison himself – advance through promotion, and rule their universes as dictators in all but name, for the cause of Good. When in 1915 Smith began to write the first novel of his Skylark series with Mrs Lee Hawkins Garby, a neighbour seconded to help with feminine matters such as dialogue, no prior models existed in popular fiction to source the combined exuberance and scale that The Skylark of Space (written 1915-1920; August-October 1928 Amazing; 1946; rev with cuts 1958) demonstrated when it finally began to appear in Amazing Stories, two years after the start of that magazine, in the same issue as Philip Nowlan's "Armageddon – 2419 A.D." (August 1928 Amazing), the story which introduced Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. It was not until he began to unveil the architectural structure of his second and definitive Series that Smith was able to demonstrate the thoroughness of his thinking about Space Opera. And it is with the Lensman series – or The History of Civilization, the over-title for the 1953-1955 limited-edition boxed reprint of the original books – that his name is most strongly and justly associated. The Lensman series inspired one of the earliest of sf WarGames, Lensman (1969). Two Japanese Anime adaptations, the film Lensman and the Television series Galactic Patrol Lensman (1984-1985), unfortunately poisoned Hollywood interest in Western versions of the saga. Smith was widely read by scientists and engineers from the 1930s into the 1970s. He was posthumously inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2004. He died at the age of 75 in Seaside, Oregon. Famous Birthdays 31st August 1821 – Hermann von Helmholtz - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermann_von_Helmholtz A German physicist and physician who made significant contributions in several scientific fields. The largest German association of research institutions, the Helmholtz Association, is named after him. In physiology and psychology, he is known for his mathematics of the eye, theories of vision, ideas on the visual perception of space, color vision research, and on the sensation of tone, perception of sound, and empiricism in the physiology of perception. In physics, he is known for his theories on the conservation of energy, work in electrodynamics, chemical thermodynamics, and on a mechanical foundation of thermodynamics. As a philosopher, he is known for his philosophy of science, ideas on the relation between the laws of perception and the laws of nature, the science of aesthetics, and ideas on the civilizing power of science. His first important scientific achievement, an 1847 treatise on the conservation of energy, was written in the context of his medical studies and philosophical background. His work on energy conservation came about while studying muscle metabolism. He tried to demonstrate that no energy is lost in muscle movement, motivated by the implication that there were no vital forces necessary to move a muscle. This was a rejection of the speculative tradition of Naturphilosophie which was at that time a dominant philosophical paradigm in German physiology. In fluid dynamics, Helmholtz made several contributions, including Helmholtz's theorems for vortex dynamics in inviscid fluids. Helmholtz was a pioneer in the scientific study of human vision and audition. Inspired by psychophysics, he was interested in the relationships between measurable physical stimuli and their correspondent human perceptions. For example, the amplitude of a sound wave can be varied, causing the sound to appear louder or softer, but a linear step in sound pressure amplitude does not result in a linear step in perceived loudness. The physical sound needs to be increased exponentially in order for equal steps to seem linear, a fact that is used in current electronic devices to control volume. Helmholtz paved the way in experimental studies on the relationship between the physical energy (physics) and its appreciation (psychology), with the goal in mind to develop "psychophysical laws." Helmholtz studied the phenomena of electrical oscillations from 1869 to 1871, and in a lecture delivered to the Naturhistorisch-medizinischen Vereins zu Heidelberg (Natural History and Medical Association of Heidelberg) on 30 April 1869, titled On Electrical Oscillations he indicated that the perceptible damped electrical oscillations in a coil joined up with a Leyden jar were about 1/50th of a second in duration. He became interested in electromagnetism, and the Helmholtz equation is named for him. Although he did not make major contributions to this field, his student Heinrich Rudolf Hertz became famous as the first to demonstrate electromagnetic radiation. He was born in Potsdam, Province of Brandenburg, Kingdom of Prussia, German Confederation.Events of Interest31st August 1422 – King Henry V of England dies of dysentery while in France. His son, Henry VI becomes King of England at the age of nine months. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_VI_of_England#Child_king He succeeded to the throne as King of England at the age of nine months on 1 September 1422, the day after his father's death; he remains the youngest person ever to succeed to the English throne. On 21 October 1422, in accordance with the Treaty of Troyes of 1420, he became titular King of France upon his grandfather Charles VI's death. His mother, the 20-year-old Catherine of Valois, was viewed with considerable suspicion by English nobles as Charles VI's daughter. She was prevented from playing a full role in her son's upbringing. In reaction to the coronation of Charles VII of France in Reims Cathedral on 17 July 1429, Henry was soon crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey on 6 November 1429, aged 7, followed by his own coronation as King of France at Notre Dame de Paris on 16 December 1431, aged 10. He was the only English king to be crowned king in both England and France. It was shortly after his crowning ceremony at Merton Priory on All Saints' Day, 1 November 1437, shortly before his 16th birthday, that he obtained some measure of independent authority. This was confirmed on 13 November 1437, but his growing willingness to involve himself in administration had already become apparent in 1434, when the place named on writs temporarily changed from Westminster (where the Privy Council met) to Cirencester (where the King resided). He finally assumed full royal powers when he came of age at the end of the year 1437, when he turned sixteen years old. Henry's assumption of full royal powers occurred during the Great Bullion Famine and the beginning of the Great Slump in England. 31st August 1956 – The Forbidden Planet landed in Ireland - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049223/ On this day in 1956 (in Ireland), Forbidden Planet arrived in Earth's theaters. Here's the plot summary: "When Adams and his crew are sent to investigate the silence from a planet inhabited by scientists, he finds all but two have died. Dr. Morbius and his daughter Altaira have somehow survived a hideous monster which roams the planet. Unknown to Adams, Morbius has made a discovery, and has no intention of sharing it (or his daughter!) with anyone."First mainstream film to have the music performed entirely by electronic instruments. The famous poster for the film shows a menacing robot carrying a struggling pretty girl - a staple of "monster movie" posters from the 1950's. In fact, no such scene occurs in the film itself and the robot portrayed in the poster is of course actually the very likeable Robby the Robot.Robert Kinoshita, who is credited with building Robby the Robot, was also Art Director for the TV series Lost in Space (1965). Many of the "Lost in Space" robot's features are similar to Robby's: glass "head" with animated elements; rotating antenna "ears" (although the "Lost" robot's ears rarely moved after the pilot episode); flashing light "mouth"; chest panel with more animated elements. For that matter, much of the layout of "Forbidden Planet"'s spaceship is mirrored by "Lost"'s Jupiter 2: saucer shape; integral landing gear/entry stairs; lower external dome with animated lights; central, plexi-domed navigation station; vertical hibernacula arranged along perimeter. In addition, Robby and the "Lost" robot had a couple of "family reunions" in two "Lost in Space" episodes: Lost in Space: War of the Robots (1966) and Lost in Space: Condemned of Space (1967).Robby the Robot was originally operated by stuntman/actor Frankie Darro. He was fired during filming after almost falling over while in the expensive prop, following a five-martini lunch. With the death of James Drury (Crewman Strong) on April 6, 2020, Earl Holliman (Cookie) is the last surviving member of the cast.According to Anne Francis, Walter Pidgeon loved to disrupt takes by reciting dirty limericks in the middle of his dialogue.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us on Facebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comSupport via Podhero- https://podhero.com/podcast/449127/nerds-amalgamated See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In 2009, Disney and Pixar changed the course of animated movies forever with comedy-adventure flick, Up. Up shares the story of Carl Fredricksen, a curmudgeon widower who is holding on to memories of his recently passed wife by holding out on selling the home they met in and shared for many years. After it becomes clear that there is no stopping progress, Carl turns his house into an airship using a whole lotta balloons, and unwittingly takes Russell the Wilderness Explorer with him. Carl and Russell befriend a bird and a talking dog, but soon find that meeting your childhood hero may not be all they are cracked up to be. Spending over 5 years in development, Up both a critical and commercial success, grossing $735M off of a substantial $175M budget, winning Academy Awards for Animated Feature and Original Score. But does it hold up? Listen as Jon, Colin and Brent debate grumpy old men, overnight trips to other continents, and talking dogs as we see if adventure is out there, or if we should stay home and yell at hippies all day.

Krisha & Frank are back with a super-sized Thanksgiving Special. Their normal schedule resumes on Monday.  Frank points out that the balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade are inflated, not “blown up.” Next-door neighbor Nancy is often in the Macy's Parade. This year, Dolly Parton will be in the parade. Krisha recalls her older cousins drinking beer in the driveway on Thanksgiving. Frank would learn a new magic trick to entertain his grandparents before Thanksgiving dinner. Santa Joe Moore sent a special greeting to Krisha & Frank. You can schedule a video chat with Santa at JingleRing.com. Use the JingleID code Jingle301 to talk with Santa Joe. Frank saw local meteorologist Becca Sweet report from a children's museum in which they inflated balloons using vinegar and baking soda. He and Krisha do the experiment in the backyard. Put baking soda in a balloon. Put vinegar in a bottle. Put the balloon on the bottle and drop the baking soda from the balloon into the vinegar. Krisha brought crayons and construction paper to make handprint turkeys. Frank has never made one before. Frank's wife looked up some turkey fun facts. A young male is a jake and a young female is a jenny. The wattle dangles under a turkey's chin and the snood is over the beak and sometimes drapes down. Daniel Leach of Snipe Hunt Media sent an email with his Thanksgiving greeting. Krisha & Frank met him at the Gatlinburg Improv Fest. Frank bought some local hard cider to try. His wife Jere made gluten-free pumpkin chocolate-chip cookies. She used butter instead of coconut oil. You can find the original dairy-free recipe at https://meaningfuleats.com/gluten-free-classic-pumpkin-chocolate-chip-cookies-dairy-free/ Frank recalls that his dad bought a favorite pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving but accidentally ruined it when he got home. Their friend Bean objected to A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving because the bird Woodstock eats turkey. Frank sent him a list of dozens of birds that eat other birds, including turkey vultures. Krisha & Frank both love eggnog from Weigel's, a local convenience store. Frank thinks Kurt Weigel should buy ads on the podcast. Frank put a National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation moose mug on his Amazon wish list. You can order one here: https://amzn.to/2IZuwe6  For the show finale, Krisha & Frank host their own Thanksgiving Day parade featuring actual helium-filled balloons, including SpongeBob and Elmo. People smiled at Krisha when she carried the balloons. Frank thinks he would look like Carl Fredricksen, the old man from Up. Krisha wanted to be a Radio City Rockette and tries to demonstrate. Courtesy of Neda Shahghasemi "BLM" by artist Neda Shahghasemi, one of the artists whose work is included in the virtual gallery at the Twin Cities Iranian Culture Festival. One food-based connection opportunity is a virtual tea house or chaikhaneh, which allows people in Minnesota and Iran to share tea and conversation over Skype. People also may sign up to attend or host socially distanced backyard picnics through the month of September. The Iranian Cultural Collective will provide Iranian food and music for cross-cultural conversation and celebration in your backyard. Watch a performance by Niloofar Hadi Sohi on YouTube Retired educator Bill Fried of Spring Grove is looking forward to visitors — both in-person and virtual — to the first Spring Grove International Film Festival, which runs Friday through Sunday. The festival includes 50 films that range in style from comedy to drama to documentary. Both shorts and feature-length films are included. Films will run throughout the day on Friday and Saturday at three Spring Grove locations or available online with a festival ticket.  Actor Ed Asner has a film in the festival and will attend in person. He’ll take questions following his film early Friday evening. You’ll need a ticket to attend. Moviegoers may know Asner as the voice of Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar film “Up.” St. Paul actor Greta Grosch recommends catching a roof-top production of “My Funny Quarantine” from Theater Unmasked this weekend. Husband-and-wife team Jen Maren and Peter Simmons wrote and will perform the 40-minute show about surviving quarantine with your spouse day after day after day. It’s a lighthearted comedy, complete with music and sword-fighting. Grosch calls the interactive show “kid-friendly and parent-approved.” You can see the show on the newly refurbished green roof of the Bakken Museum in Minneapolis on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 5:30 p.m. The show is free, though reservations are required to ensure social distancing. Theater Unmasked requests $5-15 per person donations, with 20 percent going to the Bakken Museum.

Hello and welcome to eleventh episode of Fanboy Nation’s Toon-In-Talk, your rendezvous for animation interviews. Whitney had the pleasure of interviewing a legendary actor of screen and stage, the incomparable Ed Asner. Asher is famous for not only playing Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but he has lent his voice to many animated shows and movies. You might recognize him as Hudson on Gargoyles, Granny Good from the DC Animated Universe, and as Carl Fredricksen from Up. He even tells Whitney he hates her spunk to her delight! Show Notes Ed Asner has a prolific career ranging over fifty years, including Broadway, TV, movies, and more. He was the voice of Carl Fredicksen on Up, he was also on Freakazoid!, Captain Planet, Gargoyles, Spider-Man, and Batman: The Animated Series. The villain on Batman scared Whitney as a child. He started out as a radio actor and when he switched over to visual performances, Ed had to retrain himself on using his voice. They talk about the weather, the various places where Ed has lived, and how he dislikes New York. On Gargoyles, Ed was intimidated by his fellow voice actors because of their talent. The show had a great staff and he especially notes Greg Weisman as a writer. Ed sings the Jeopardy theme as Whitney searches for a number. He loved playing Granny Good from the DC Animated Universe. When he plays a villain, Ed draws influences from the characters in the Dick Tracy comics. Carl Fredricksen wasn’t specifically made for Ed, he had to audition like everyone else. Ed says that avuncular is the best way to describe old grumps. The entire recording session for Up lasted about six to eight sessions totaling about four-six hours each. Ed took a big spill in the Pixar recording room, but he went back to work without a problem. Actors are regular people who love to play certain parts and indulge in certain character traits, but they especially love to keep people surprised. Ed thinks of Up as a double love story, the first is with Ellie and the other is when Russell. He wishes that dogs and cats could communicate with humans like Dug in the movie. Welcome to another episode of The Behind The Scenes Show with Eric Fell and Shaun Stewart. This week we take a special long look at Cannes and check out the 'UP' premiere with ace correspondent Phillip Nakov! Cannes isn't only for movie premieres though, aspiring directors will go there to present their projects and try and get them funded, as was the case with Iron Sky. Finally we take a look 'Wrong Side of Town' starring WWE superstars Rob Van Dam and Batista, check it out! First off we are in Cannes for the premiere of 'UP', correspondent Phillip Nakov was AT the premiere! Its the first time an animated movie has opened the festival and its gotten pretty good reviews. Its the movie about Carl Fredricksen. He spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Junior Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. Next we have 'Iron Sky'. This one is a bit of an enigma because its still in pre-production without funding! But it looks HILARIOUS so we'll give it a shot! Towards the end of World War II the staff of SS officer Hans Kammler made a significant breakthrough in anti-gravity. From a secret base built in the Antarctic, the first Nazi spaceships were launched in late ‘45 to found the military base Schwarze Sonne (Black Sun) on the dark side of the Moon. This base was to build a powerful invasion fleet and return to take over the Earth once the time was right. Now it's 2018, the Nazi invasion is on its way and the world is goose-stepping towards its doom. Finally we end the episode with 'Wrong Side of Town' which is a movie that MovieSet has Exclusive access to the set. Check out all our videos of behind the scenes footage and the teaser trailer. Ex-Navy Seal Bobby Kalinkowski lives apeaceful life as a landscape architect in an LA suburb with his wife Dawn and 16 year old daughter Brianna. On a night out with his wife Dawn is accosted a club owner, Ethan Bordas. When Bobby intervenes and accidentally kills Ethan defending his wife, his enraged older brother, Seth, puts a bounty on his head. Now Bobby must escape LA while being pursued by every criminal, wise guy and thug in the city.

Hello MovieSetters and welcome to our all-Cannes edition of The Behind the Scenes Show with Eric Fell and Shaun Stewart. This webisode we are looking at some of the different movies that are being focused on in Cannes. Specifically we are going to talk about the new Pixar movie 'UP' followed by a look at Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' and the new movie 'Taking Woodstock'.First off we look at 'UP' which is the opening film for the Cannes International Film Festival. Its the first time an animated motion picture has been the opening film for the prestigious festival so its quite an honor. By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.'Inglourious Basterds' begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own..."Taking Woodstock" is a 1969-set story, based on Elliot Tiber's memoir, about a man, Elliot Tiber (Demetri Martin), who inadvertently played a role in making the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival into the famed happening it was. Working as an interior designer in Greenwich Village during culturally and politically exciting times, Mr. Tiber felt empowered by the gay rights movement. But he was also still staked to the family business - a Catskills motel. Upon hearing that a planned concert had lost its permit from the neighboring town of Wallkill, NY, Mr. Tiber called producer Michael Lang (Jonathan Groff) at Woodstock Ventures to offer his family's motel, the El Monaco, to the promoters. Soon the Woodstock staff was moving into the El Monaco; half a million people were on their way to Mr. Tiber's neighbor's Max Yasgur's (Eugene Levy) farm in White Lake, NY; and Mr. Tiber found himself swept up in a generation-defining experience that would change his life, and American culture, forever.Be sure to check out more Behind the Scenes as well as Previous Episodes!Subscribe to behind the Scenes in iTunes or by Email
