A week before the High Holidays, three rabbis find themselves in a room fighting to save a family by building a bridge between orthodoxy and modernity. One of these rabbis is Chava, the child of a dynastic Hasidic rabbinical family and destined to become a leader of the next generation before the revelation of her trans identity clashed explosively with the strictly gendered world in which she was raised. As we jump through memory—and wrestle with theology—truths and secrets emerge that ensure no one will read the old stories the same way again. Sarah chats with playwright, Emil Weinstein about this exciting new play, Becoming Eve. EMIL WEINSTEIN (Playwright) is a writer and director whose work spans theater, television, and filmmaking. He graduated from the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale, where he directed the first workshop production of Slave Play by Jeremy O. Harris. Romeo and Juliet reluctantly part ways at dawn before her mother enters to tell Juliet to prepare to marry Paris on Thursday. Juliet protests first to her mother and then to her father, who violently berates her for refusing to marry. Lady Capulet takes her husband's side and shames Juliet before departing, leaving her to beg the Nurse to intervene. The Nurse, however, advises Juliet to take Paris's hand and forget about Romeo. Juliet pretends to agree but secretly goes to Friar Laurence's cell, where she runs into Paris, who is seeking the Friar's services for their upcoming wedding. Juliet brushes off Paris's affection and after he departs, laments her woes, threatening to kill herself with a dagger she snatches from the Friar's chamber. The Friar consoles Juliet with a plan for her to drink a potion that will make it look like she is dead and that she will send word of the plan to Romeo. They will then free Juliet from the Montague tomb and together, Romeo and Juliet will escape to Mantua. Back at the Capulet home, the wedding preparations are well underway. Juliet returns and begs her father's forgiveness, then retires to her chamber where she dismisses her mother and Nurse before drinking the potion. In this episode, Adam and Budi kick of the first book club episode of the year with The Dutchman, by Amiri Baraka. We welcome Taylor Barfield to the discussion, as he joins Budi and Adam in dissecting this classic. Poet, writer, teacher, and political activist Amiri Baraka was born Everett LeRoi Jones in 1934 in Newark, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University and Howard University, spent three years in the U.S. Air Force, and returned to New York City to attend Columbia University and the New School for Social Research. Baraka was well known for his strident social criticism, often writing in an incendiary style that made it difficult for some audiences and critics to respond with objectivity to his works. Throughout most of his career his method in poetry, drama, fiction, and essays was confrontational, calculated to shock and awaken audiences to the political concerns of black Americans. For decades, Baraka was one of the most prominent voices in the world of American literature.Baraka's legacy as a major poet of the second half of the 20th century remains matched by his importance as a cultural and political leader. His influence on younger writers has been significant and widespread, and as a leader of the Black Arts movement of the 1960s Baraka did much to define and support black literature's mission into the next century. His experimental fiction of the 1960s is considered some of the most significant African-American fiction since that of Jean Toomer.________________________________________________________________________________________________Taylor Barfield is a dramaturg, writer, and theater artist from Baltimore, MD. He served as the Acting Literary Manager at Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, CT and the Literary Manager at Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ. Taylor currently works as a freelance dramaturg and consultant working with organizations such as the Guthrie, BMG, Portland Center Stage, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center, and Yale Repertory Theatre. Taylor received his B.A. in Molecular/Cellular Biology and English Literature from Johns Hopkins University and is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, where he earned his M.F.A. and D.F.A. in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism. His scholarly work explores how contemporary Black American playwrights re-imagine and re-stage Black theater history. The cast assembles at the recording studio to create the Play On podcast series, “Romeo and Juliet”. Two actors take on the roles of Sampson and Peter, members of the house of Capulet, as the rest of the cast pretend to be the people of Verona milling about in the streets. When Balthasar and Abraham show up from the House of Montague, Sampson and Peter pick a fight with them. Benvolio, a friend of the House of Montague, tries to break it up, but Tybalt, a firebrand from the House of Capulet, escalates the violence. The Prince arrives on the scene and finally ends the melee, warning the rival factions that if there's another brawl, they'll pay for it with their lives. In the aftermath, Lady Capulet asks Benvolio about her lovesick son, Romeo. Benvolio promises Lady Capulet he'll try to talk him out of his melancholy. Romeo appears, strumming his guitar, and confesses to Benvolio that his crush, Rosaline, has sworn to live a life of chastity as a nun. Benvolio tells Romeo to start looking for other women to woo, but Romeo says it will only remind him of his heartbreak. Back at Lord Capulet's house, Count Paris asks Juliet's father for her hand in marriage. Stephanie Hsu is a familiar face on both the stage and screen, maybe best known for originating the role of Christine in Be More Chill at Two River Theater, and then on Broadway. She previously made her Broadway debut as Karen the Computer in the original cast of Spongebob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical. Her TV and Film credits include The Path (seasons 1-3), Set It Up, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Awkwafina is Nora from Queens, Asking For It, and Mei in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Born in Torrance, CA, Stephanie shares that it was mostly just her and her mom growing up. The two clashed at times - her mother was not sure America was built for her as an immigrant, while Stephanie was “adamant about being an American.” As a child, Stephanie was very into basketball, and fought against the urge to become a “drama geek”. But when a fellow classmate in high school arranged an audition for her with the drama teacher, it “launched everything”, including heading to NYU to study acting.  Stephanie stresses the importance of visibility in the arts, and candidly talks with us about her role on The Marvelous Maisel - Mei, who as a bilingual, strong and independent Chinese American woman in the 1960’s, was “unlike any character” she’d ever seen in her life. During our conversation, Stephanie continues to bring us back to themes of “love”, sharing, “Love has always been my favorite thing in the whole world,” (her college thesis was about love). When she was recently commissioned by Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, to create a piece of self expression, she found herself in the silence of the pandemic trying to understand “if being in love is ok”. Stephanie walks us through the creation of her piece “Another Love Letter”, where she battled between feeling the desire and responsibility as an artist to be productive and to make something big, but also feeling drawn to explore the poetic parts of quiet simplicity.  In this episode, we talk about:  Creating her virtual commission “Another Love Letter”  Her thoughts on polyamorous relationships  One of her favorite things to do at museums  Working on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel The importance of making work you care about with people you care about  Her journey to landing a role in the new film Everything Everywhere All At Once Connect with Stephanie: Watch Another Love Letter IG: @hsulace Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Ross Baum is a lot of things. He's a composer, arranger, producer, vocal coach, and a performer and does ALL of those incredibly well. The reason why I wanted to sit down with him NOW is because the new musical Gun+Powder, which he wrote the music for, began rehearsals this week for the world premiere production that will open at the Signature Theater in DC this January. I felt like capturing how he's feeling right now and hearing where he's at as an artist and in his life, would make for not only great conversation, but an incredible time capsule for this moment before his first step into what he refers to as, “The Big Leagues.” In our conversation we hit on things like collaboration, community, success, momentum, the starving artist mentality, and the difference between writing pop and theater music. Ross and I, before this recording, had only spent one-on-one time together, once. I'm extremely happy to say that since we sat down for this, he's become much more integrated in my life and listening back made me feel deep gratitude for the opportunity that this podcast has afforded me in a short amount of time. I'm excited to continue on in 2020 and I couldn't have asked for a better guest to close out the decade with. + + + Ross Baum is a composer, performer, and music arranger. It's a musical about a woman on her own in the Old American West – disguised as a man named Jo. "The Ballad of Little Jo" opened Friday, June 9th at Two River Theater in Red Bank, and runs through June 25th. Based on the 1993 film of the same name, the show is directed by Maggie Greenwald, who based her story on the real life experiences of a woman named Josephine Monaghan. In the story, Josephine becomes Jo to survive in a time and place in which women are openly preyed upon, and lynch mobs are a cold fact of life. Shunned by her East Coast family when she refuses to deny that she has given birth to an illegitimate child, Josephine heads for the edge of civilization – the Wild West – in late 1800s Idaho to re-invent herself, make her way in the world, and be re-united with the son she had to leave behind. We recently spoke to the musical's co-writer and lyricist Sarah Schlesinger about creating this production with composer Mike Reid in 2000 at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, and collaborating with Two River Theater's Artistic Director John Dias to bring it to a 2017 audience.

Kevin Kline is one of the most acclaimed entertainers working today. So how did the kid from St. Louis end up with an Oscar, two Tony awards, and a career that has intersected with those of Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, John Cleese, and Kenneth Branagh, to name just a few? He says that, at Juilliard, the answer came in the form of a pair of tights and lots of dance practice, as well as a merciless culling of his midwestern elocution. Kline's career accelerated early: a cross-country tour with the soon-to-be renowned acting company founded by the great John Houseman led to Tony-decorated roles (three years apart) in "On the Twentieth Century" and "The Pirates of Penzance." His first film role soon followed, opposite Streep in "Sophie's Choice." Kline's stage and screen stock hasn't dipped since. He recently spoke with Alec Baldwin in front of a live audience at the Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey, where he assessed some of his many marquee performances, and demonstrated the most important thing he learned at Juilliard: how to do a theatrical bow from every era since the Renaissance.
