Alabama Department of Labor Secretary Fitzgerald Washington announced today that Alabama's labor force participation rate for July held steady at 57.5%. The percentage of prime-age workers increased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 79.3% over the month. Over the year, this number increased by one and a half percentage points from 77.8%. Prime-age workers are those aged 25-54 years. In the surrounding areas, Clarke County has a 6.1% unemployment rate, Monroe County has a 4.9%, Washington County has a 3.0%, Marengo County has a 4.0%, Choctaw County sits at 4.7%, and Wilcox County is at 8.8%. After a two-day trial, Jaylen Deon Slater, of Choctaw County, was found not guilty of the 2022 attempted murder of Deontae McGrew, also of Choctaw County. The trial for Slater took place from May 14 to 15, in the courtroom of Circuit Court Judge Robert Montgomery. After closing arguments from District Attorney Stephen Winters who represented McGrew and Defense Attorney Leroy Maxwell Jr. who represented Slater, the jury of 12 deliberated for less than an hour before returning with a not-guilty verdict. Clarke County's boys (4- 8) rolled to double-digit victories at Thomasville and against Choctaw County at home last week before getting routed by Jackson Saturday night. 33-year-old Caitlyn Rose Case is a Louisiana native who recently moved to Colorado to live with her brother.   Caitlyn made arrangements to buy a 2006 black GMC Envoy, so she takes a flight to Houma Louisiana, buys the vehicle, She's in constant contact with her parents throughout her travels. Early on, she tells family members the navigation system is giving her trouble and cell phone service is sporadic. As Case travels through Texas, she calls her father around 5:00 pm. She is lost and Gordon Case trys to talk his daughter back on course.  She is traveling northbound on Highway 271, about 5 miles southwest of Bogata, Texas. Just after 5pm,  Case's phone cuts out.  Unable to reach Caitlyn,  the family files a missing person's report with the Houma,  Louisiana Police Department. Cell tower tracking indicates that Caitlyn Case continues north toward Paris, Texas.  Shortly after 7:00 pm, her cell phone pings to cell towers in Pattonville, Texas, and south of Paris. At 9:17 pm, a license plate reader captures her car leaving Paris on the south loop of Highway 286 and traveling northwest to FM 79. Her cell phone last pings to cell towers in Choctaw County, Oklahoma. A two-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 5:25 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, has claimed the life of a Lamar, Ark. man. Eddie O. Bentrum, 35, was fatally injured when the 2022 Indian Challenger motorcycle he was operating collided head-on with a 2001 GMC Sierra driven by Christian C. Goodman, 22, of Grove Hill. Bentrum was pronounced deceased at the scene. The crash occurred on Alabama 114 near the sixmile marker in the Pennington municipal limits, in Choctaw County. One hundred ninety-three United Methodist churches in South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle officially disaffiliated, or withdrew, from the denomination Sunday, May 7. The churches are large and small and spread across the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. In Clarke County, only Gainestown UMC with five members present all voting for disaffiliation withdrew. Fruitdale UMC in south Washington County and Aquilla UMC in south Choctaw County also disaffiliated. All three Clarke County High School basketball teams defeated Choctaw County Friday night in Grove Hill and posted mixed results in home games against Wilcox Central Saturday night. The Varsity Boys (1-5) picked up their first win of the season with a 66-57 victory over Choctaw County 66-57. An arrest has been made in the Oct. 1 shooting in Whatley that injured an individual. Deontae McGrew, 22, was shot twice and suffered serious wounds to his back and arm, lawmen reported at the time. He continues to recover from his injuries. Organizers of Whatley Day were upset that the event on Saturday, Oct. 8 was linked to a shooting that happened at a party held the night before at the same venue in Whatley. Deontae McGrew of Choctaw County was shot mulitple times and severely injured. The shooting occurred around 1 a.m. and the Whatley Day event was held throughout the day Saturday. A Choctaw County man is in intensive care at University Hospital in Mobile with gunshot wounds he suffered when he was shot at a gathering in Whatley. Deontae McGrew suffered serious wounds to his back and arm, said Clarke County Sheriff De- Wayne Smith. Earlier this year, the First Judicial Circuit Special Response Team was formed through a cooperative effort of law enforcement agencies in Choctaw, Clarke and Washington counties. The multi-agency tactical unit employs advanced training and equipment to deploy to situations beyond the normal capabilities of individual patrol officers. The Millry High School Wildcats defeated Choctaw County High School on the road in Butler Friday, Sept. 16. The 46-20 win improved Millry's record to 4-1 and 3-0 in the region. A single-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. Sunday, July 24, has claimed the life of a Gilbertown woman. Dorothy D. Abston, 84, was fatally injured when the 2010 Toyota Highlander she was a driving left the roadway, struck several trees, and overturned. Abston was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The crash occurred on Choctaw County 14, approximately seven miles southeast of Gilbertown, in Choctaw County. Drug Task Force Agents of the 17th Judicial Circuit stopped Sheldon Williams of Chicago, Illinois on Interstate 20/59. He ran. Work is progressing on putting down a natural gas pipeline to serve PowerSouth's new Lowman Electric Plant at Leroy that is nearing completion. The old plant used coal to generate electricity but it is being replaced with a natural gas-fed plant. The gas had to come from somewhere and a large line that crosses central Choctaw County was tapped and a 51-mile line from it will feed the new plant. Voters returned State Rep. Brett Easterbrook to office in House District 65, giving him 6,675 votes, or just over 70%, to Choctaw County newspaper publisher Dee Ann Campbell's 2,836 votes. Work is visible in the northern Washington County area of a new natural gas pipeline path that is headed toward the new Lowman Energy Center plant on the Tombigbee River in Leroy. The old coal-fired PowerSouth Energy Cooperative plant has been removed and a new natural gas-fired plant is replacing it. A source of natural gas with a large enough pipeline to supply the new plant had to be found. A single-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. Thursday, March 24, has claimed the life of a Butler man. Derrick R. Wilson, 22, was fatally injured when the 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis he was driving left the roadway and struck a utility pole. Wilson was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The crash occurred on Choctaw County 32, approximately 15 miles northwest of Butler, in Choctaw County. Traffic was backed up heading East and West Tuesday midday when a log truck from Culbert Trucking in Quitman, Miss. overturned on U.S. Highway 84. The wrecked truck was on the long stretch in Choctaw County close to the Tombigbee River bridge at Coffeeville. The unidentified driver was taken via Choctaw EMS for medical treatment.Article Link

Clarke County dispatchers received a call Monday, Nov. 29 at approximately 9:07 p.m. that a male was screaming, making threats, and firing a gun on Hickory Street in Coffeeville. Coffeeville Police officers, Clarke County deputies, Choctaw County deputies, Jackson Police officers, and Grove Hill Police officers were dispatched to that location. While deputies and officers were en route, dispatchers received multiple calls from the suspect, Nakias Causey, threatening to kill officers when they arrived. A single-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 1:32 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, has claimed the life of a Silas man. Daniel Kendall Gunn, 28, was driving a 2012 Yamaha ATV when it struck a tree in the roadway. The crash occurred on Choctaw County 6 approximately one mile east of Silas, in Choctaw County. A man shot and killed by Baldwin County lawmen early Sunday morning, July 18 in Malbis had been a Choctaw County prisoner who was held in the Clarke County Jail. District Attorney Spencer Walker contends that he was incorrectly released from the jail. Clint Dearman, 35, was shot numerous times by Daphne police and Baldwin County sheriff's deputies at a Chevron gas station along Highway 181 off of Interstate 10. The Hurricane Baptist Church in the Hurricane community of Choctaw County, near the Mississippi line west of Gilbertown, was destroyed by fire Thursday night, July 15. Lightning from a storm may have been the cause of the fire. Fire departments from all over the county responded along with the Choctaw County Sheriff's Department but the fire could not be extinguished. A new contract was recently signed to provide medical and healthcare for inmates in the Clarke County Jail. The cost went up about ,000 a month. The county is paying ,574.43 a month, or 6,893.16 annually. As a result, Clarke County Sheriff Ray Norris said he is going to try and cut down the inmates housed in the county jail to just those of the county and county municipalities in an effort to try and control costs. On this special explosive and in-depth edition of Light ‘Em Up we investigate the facts of a cold-blooded murder. Our guest today is Ms. Kimkeshia Johnson-Byron. She’s the mother of Ter’Rion Dunn, a young man who has been charged with capital murder in the robbery-shooting death of Brandon Howard.  We dig deep and investigate behind the scenes and ask why is Ter’Rion Dunn being charged with capital murder – when we believe he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time?  It is scary, this can happen to you. “An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  This case has kept me up at night. I have prayed and prayed over this and spent hours over the case file and given it much thought. With our Criminal Justice Foundation called “Justice Rolls Down”, we wanted to lend our voice to this cause where we could. Something doesn’t sit well with me.  Something in this specific case is off, way off! The fact pattern is: Monday, December 2, 2019 was just another day in Butler, Alabama, 35 miles or so southeast of Meridian, Mississippi.  Thoughts were starting to turn towards Christmas.  The “Christmas on Courthouse Square” parade and festivities were a few days away.But all that was about to forever change for a number of young people, their families and friends.  Ter’Rion Dunn goes over to visit a friend, Brandon Howard.  Just before 9 p.m. a knock came on a door at the Bedford Pines Apartments.It is 23-year-old Ollie Curtis III.  He’s armed and there to rob Brandon Howard.  A struggle ensues, Howard is fatally shot.  According to subsequent statements, Curtis then put his gun to Ter’Rion Dunn’s head, demanding money and drugs. He threatened harm to Dunn’s grandma if he didn’t comply.  It was the 1st murder in Choctaw County, Alabama, on the 336th day of the year.We examine: ● What do you do when the system is so corrupt that it would permit a glaring conflict of interest whereby the prosecuting attorney is the brother of his court appointed defense attorney?  ● You know you are innocent but no one will listen to you.  What do you do if you are wrongly accused --- having your liberty robbed from you?  ● The alleged gunman was granted and posted a $150,000 bond last March.  Ter’Rion Dunn -- who had no knowledge of the robbery before or during -- was only visiting with a friend, but has been stuck in prison – charged with capital murder!  Things like this happen all across our country, but most especially in wee little southern towns like Butler, Alabama.  Race and class play a role in everything in the United States of America. We have to pause for a moment and remember where all this is happening.Alabama, one of the poorest states in the union.  A state where >300 African-Americans were lynched from 1877 to 1943.   A state whose population is just over a quarter Black, where >1/2  the people in custody are Black, according to Alabama Appleseed.Alabama makes consistent choices that prioritize punishment and deprivation over prosperity.  The consequences of refusing to invest in education, healthcare, and equitably distributed infrastructure have been devastating for many communities.  But make no mistake: by design and in practice, those consequences are borne most brutally by Black Alabamians.  The details of this case are disturbing and troubling.  If “Justice delayed is justice denied”, this case is crying out for justice.  A young man’s life hangs in the balance. You will not want to miss this explosive episode!Tune in and be enlightened, educated and empowered!      Thanks so much!   Phil Rizzo  Executive Producer

A Coffeeville man has been arrested and charged with using a chain saw to cut down power poles carrying live electrical wires in Choctaw County. Noah Pugh was charged with three counts of “Damage to Utility of Cable Property.” Choctaw County Sheriff Scott Lolley said Pugh was interviewed and confessed to the crimes. Pugh turned himself in Friday, March 12. He was booked in the Clarke County Jail, used by Choctaw County because its jail is closed. He posted a ,000 bond on each count and was released. The son of a popular Choctaw County minister murdered in his home on Jan. 8 has been arrested for the murder in Texas and will be extradited to Choctaw County. On Tuesday, March 2, 2021, warrants were obtained for Shannon Xavier Pearson for murder and conspiracy to murder Rev. Tim Pearson at his home in the Melvin community. If we believe that all children are a gift, not a problem and that they are capable of achieving excellence, our communities will grow and prosper.  I believe I am best to fill the position of Alabama State Board of Education, District 5 for many reasons. I love the state of Alabama, and all of its children; I have decades of firsthand experience and success working with Alabama's school children. A Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory, Wallis Willis, wrote "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" ,in what is now Choctaw County, near the County seat of Hugo, Oklahoma sometime before 1862. He was inspired by the Red River, which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah's being taken to heaven by a chariot (2 Kings 2:11). Many sources claim that this song and "Steal Away" (also composed by Willis) had lyrics that referred to the Underground Railroad, the resistance movement that helped slaves escape from the South to the North and Canada.Alexander Reid, a minister at the Old Spencer Academy, Choctaw boarding school, heard Willis singing these two songs and transcribed the words and melodies. He sent the music to the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.
