This episode discusses the fundamentals and profound benefits of the diet for those that are looking for a sustained change in their lifestyle choices.
Today, we're talking about five healthy exercise hacks when you're short on time. Sure, we all get busy throughout the day, but it's all a matter of being intentional because if there's a will, there's definitely more than one way! HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Tip #1: Look at your week ahead. You need a system because your calendar can be your best friend only if you adhere to it. And your habit tracker can be your best friend if you have allowed enough time to do each task per day. Tip #2: Make your time work for you. Re-evaluate your time and make sure you are still keeping happy. And is it how you really want to spend it? Make sure you're spending your time effectively and beneficially at home or at leisure. Tip #3: Work your exercise in your daily routines and activities. Safely park as far away as you can so you can walk. And be sure to walk quickly to boost your heart rate! If you're watching TV, do some burpees or jumping jacks in between commercial breaks. Or do push-ups every time you come out of the bathroom. Be creative! Tip #4: Food first, workout second. Food is really where you get most of the results. Think about what you spend on caffeinated drinks in the middle of the day. Tip #5: Make sure you're getting enough sleep. Don't sacrifice sleep in order to get a workout in. Bonus tip: Squeeze in your workout somewhere! Set a goal to work out either early in the morning or at least do yoga before going to bed. There are several ways you may be cutting down on your NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) – especially when you're on the computer most of your time. In this episode, find out ways you can stay NEAT active even when you're just inside the house. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis refers to all the activities that you do when you're not sleeping. It means you're always burning calories, whether you're fidgeting or exercising, or walking around. Get up and do something to keep your NEAT up such as walking the dog, washing the clothes, cooking, cleaning the house, and doing other chores around the house. If you're not keen on housework, do things like walking your dog, going up and down the steps, or walking back and forth when brushing your teeth. The best step days are errand days like grocery shopping. There are all kinds of ways to get your NEAT in, you just have to be mindful of it! How do you make the right and the best food choices right after the holidays or major life events where you felt you went a little off track? Things can happen that take you out of your already wacky life and make it a little bit wackier – and that could last for a little while. But you know things have got to stop at some point. Today, we're giving you some tips on how to keep it as normal as possible. HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Tip #1: Manage your expectations and keep your expectations within reason, but don't go extreme. Be realistic about your priority. Set some minimal goals to keep you on track and make sure to forgive yourself if things don't go your way. Instead of trying to stick to your meal plan and failing, and then you go into this vicious cycle of feeling guilty and binge eating, just go in with the expectation that there are days you're going to have to eat crap. Tip #2: Make a plan. Set a time period and allow yourself some leeway to get your butt back in gear, but not a whole month. Give yourself a grace period of around 2-3 days, but not a whole month. Tip #3: Tell your buddy what your plan is. It's very beneficial to have an accountability partner to help you get and stay on track. Planning and the buddy system go hand-in-hand. You can plan events together to keep you motivated. Be comfortable in your own body but be sure to be mindful of your health. Make room for allowances. Show NotesRick Bassman was born in Northridge, California. Rick had some major trials as a young man, chiefly being given a terminal cancer diagnosis. Rick was not expected to survive the year, but he did. Rick beat cancer and went on to pursue his dreams of being in the entertainment industry. Rick started Bassman Productions which created and organized various events, including concerts and shows with such bands as The Clash, The B52's, The Go Go's and more. While working for Disney, Rick won an Emmy for his work on the CBS special, Flash Back.A life long fan of pro-wrestling, Rick dived into the industry by assembling a “dream team” of wrestlers called Power Team USA, which featured members who each embodied the USA in some way. Among the Alumni of Power Team USA were individuals such as Sting and Ultimate Warrior, who became some of the biggest, most recognizable names in pro-wrestling history. Rick's pro-wrestling promotion, Ultimate Pro Wrestling, and wrestling school, Ultimate University, launched the careers of many of the top names in pro-wrestling, and was the top place for the major companies to scout and recruit talent. Rick has had his ups and downs in life, and is very open and honest about his journey.Rick fell into the pitfalls of addiction and lost his fortune more than once. He survived another terminal diagnosis. At one point Rick was homeless and living in his car. He always found a way out though. Rick's resilience and fortitude was continuously tested, and his many tribulations forged the character and strength of the man he is today. Currently Rick resides in the beautiful mountains of Maui with his pack of pit-bulls. He is an author, having published his memoir called Little Big Man. He is the host of the podcast Talking Tough, which dives into the toughest times of some of the strongest people in the world. Rick works with actress Linda Blair in bully breed rescue called Linda Blair's Worldheart Foundation, and is an outspoken advocate for the breed. Mike “Gormy” Gorman is the prolific podcast host of the show, The Fat Guy Forum, which interviews men who are at various stages of their fat loss journeys. Jessie Greger left her marketing job in order to take on the challenge of hiking the 2,500 miles of The Pacific Crest Trail, and against the advise of others, tackled the challenge while on a keto diet. Jessie Greger left her marketing job in order to take on the challenge of hiking the 2,500 miles of The Pacific Crest Trail, and against the advise of others, tackled the challenge while on a keto diet. Toney left his career in wind farm energy about ten years ago to become a full time caregiver for his mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and lost the ability to live independently. Toney has dedicated his energies to finding ways to manage his mother's symptoms while charting new pathways of care after losing his father to the same horrible condition years before.Toney tried all the conventional treatments and dietary guidelines commonly prescribed by modern medicine, but was watching his mother rapidly decline in brain and physical health. The diet the medical community promoted to treat Alzheimer's not only seemed to make the symptoms worse, but also caused Toney's mom to balloon in weight and have worsened bi-markers associated to overall health.Toney did his own research, put his mother on a high fat ketogenic lifestyle, which Toney and his wife also follow, and subsequently saw marked improvements in his mother's cognitive function and emotional health as well as body composition. About 20 years ago, after the birth of her youngest daughter, Nurse Kate O'Connor began to gain weight on her small 5'2” frame and noticed that if she ate any carbohydrates during the day it would make her especially sleepy. Diet-induced sleepiness was a difficult challenge for a full-time working mother of three! This caused Kate to restrict her carbs and as the extra weight disappeared, she also noticed that she had much more energy. Kate maintained that weight loss and felt better for quite some time, but gradually, as her children left the house and she was able to have a slightly more relaxed lifestyle she moved towards eating more carbohydrates again.Fast forward to a few years ago Nurse Kate was 52 years old, Peri-menopausal with hot flashes, having difficulty sleeping, and taking two different medications for Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well as another for high blood pressure. Kate happened upon the podcast Keto Talk with Jimmy Moore and Dr. Adam Nally. She binge-listened to all of those episodes because the science made sense to her and she was eager to change and to learn. A light-bulb went on for Kate from that period, and she gradually started to change and adapt to the keto lifestyle. Rather quickly Kate lost the weight she had gained, started having better sleep and best of all experienced far less brain fog and found she had her energy back for the first time in years.Today Kate takes less than half the thyroid medication that she did three years ago and has not had a hot flash since she became fat-adapted. Her quality of life is much higher.Always a lover of science Kate completed a BS in Biology from Worcester State University. Kate's study in biology lead to an appreciation of physiology and the amazing abilities of the human body, which resulted in her pursuit and completion of a Nursing degree. Kate spent about 10 years working in the float pool of UMass Medical Center, which means that she worked on every floor of a bustling hospital, enabling her to learn constantly about the many different aspects of patient care. Kate spent another 5 years working in urgent care at UMass, where she was again in a position to see a broad spectrum of health concerns and treatment. This experience led Kate to the conclusion that Hippocrates' words still ring true, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.In 2018 Kate completed the NASM and AFAA approved Keto Coaching certification course and became a Certified Keto Coach.In early 2019 Nurse Kate completed the Nutrition Network LCHF (low carb high fat) Certification Program offered by the Noakes Foundation. This online training was the first of its kind and is presented by national and international medical and allied healthcare experts in their field, on a range of topics related to LCHF nutrition and its implementation into clinical practice.Today Kate O'Connor continues to research and learn more about the benefits of the ketogenic lifestyle. Markus Wolf is a personal trainer from Canada who takes a non-flashy, no-nonsense approach to fitness and nutrition.
