Dr Chris Wells speaks & teaches about positive disintegration, Dabrowski's theory that (among other things) provides an alternate explanation for some mental illness. While the theory is not entirely about giftedness, it helps many gifted people make sense of their experiences.Dr Wells also talks about their journey, which included being on disability for many years. It's a reminder that while labels can change, they can also hold an enormous amount of power! Learn about our neurological excitabilities, our physiology and why entering periods of deeply intense darkness are healthy parts of our psychological growth and individuation. By navigating the dark parts of life, without pathologizing our experiences, we can learn to embrace all of who we are, and how to best nurture and support the body and brain that we are born with. This week's show is with Chris Wells PhD, LSW, a neurodivergent writer, social worker, and Dąbrowski scholar with a passion for studying and applying the theory of positive disintegration. They are also the founding president of the Dąbrowski Center and co-host of the Positive Disintegration Podcast. In this episode, Chris and Lian explored the topic of ‘Over-excitability', the body of work initially created by Dąbrowski. And together they explored the concepts of over-excitability and positive disintegration in the context of neurodivergence. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Over-excitabilities are intense and heightened experiences in five areas: psychomotor, sensual, intellectual, imaginational, and emotional - which seem to map to different neurodivergent traits, challenges, and capabilities. Over-excitability and positive disintegration are concepts that provide a different lens to understand neurodivergence and personal growth, and the intersection between them… in other words how neurodivergence might in itself provide a path to self-illumination, transformation and integration. Understanding and celebrating over-excitabilities, and the unique ways they show up in individuals, can lead to compassion and a better understanding of oneself and others, and ultimately serve our journey of wholeness. I have such a fascinating conversation for you today. A few months ago, I heard about something called the Theory of Positive Disintegration — a theory created by K. Dabrowski, whose name I was familiar with because of his bringing attention to the idea that gifted children have inborn traits known as overexcitabilities – and I was instantly curious. Positive Disintegration – what does that mean exactly? It sounded complicated, and good, but also messy. So I wanted to know more. That's when I learned of the work of Dr. Chris Wells, who is the founding president of the Dąbrowski Center and who is dedicated to sharing knowledge and resources about this profound theory and the psychology of giftedness. I invited Chris on the show to explore the Theory of Positive Disintegration with us, and fortunately for all of us, they said yes. And I will just say upfront — there is a lot that goes into understanding this theory and the implications it has for our differently wired children. So in today's episode, we are only scratching the surface of this theory. But I am so excited for the opportunity to share this conversation because I believe this fascinating framework has the potential to offer a new perspective on neurodivergence and mental health that is important for families in our community to explore. One last thing, this episode includes mention of suicidality and suicide attempts, so if those are trigger topics for you, please take care of yourself while listening. About Chris Wells Chris Wells, PhD, LSW, is a neurodivergent writer, social worker, and Dąbrowski scholar with a passion for studying and applying the theory of positive disintegration. She may not tell you everything in the books (and in some cases, she tells you very little), but ideally she leaves you wanting more. Welcome to Big & Salty, a podcast of stories by me, Chris Wells, told before a live audience. Many of the stories I'll be sharing were written for The Secret City, a secular church of art I founded in New York City in 2007. The first season will be 12 episodes with a new episode every two weeks. Graphic: Cathy James and Anni Poppen School just got out for the summer. I'm a gay teenager growing up in the Mojave desert when two friends invite me to try out for the musical over at the Palmdale Cultural Center. What song will I sing? Will I be asked to dance? And what's up with all the strange characters attracted to community theater? It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week next week and we are diving into neurodiversity and what it is like to figure out you are neurodivergent as an adult. Today we talk Dr Christiane Wells and Emma Nicholson, hosts of The Positive Disintegration Podcast to unpack why you need Dabrowski! We answer – are Overexcitabilities still relevant? What is positive disintegration? What is The Theory of Positive Disintegration? What impact can all this have on the neurodivergent & gifted community? Hit play and let's get started! Memorable Quotes “So it's been eight years and I can tell you that now, I no longer think of myself as gifted and mentally ill. I see myself from a whole different framework that has, like I said, changed my life, thanks to Dabrowski because I realized that the difficult times I had when I was younger, were not signs of mental illness so much as struggles that I have reframed as periods of positive disintegration.” – Christiane Wells “I accidentally fell into a dark night of the soul and this life-changing moment and... I went to Google for answers and typed in something like why does my brain feel like it's falling apart and stumbled upon positive disintegration quite by accident, and overexcitabilities. I broke down in tears, finding the answer to who I was finally after all this time. And I understood why I had been the way I was as a child and why basically struggled to adult successfully as I put it.” – Emma Nicholson Resources Chris Wells - website Chris Wells Linktree Emma Nicholson - website Emma Nicholson - Youtube channel Reexamining Overexcitability: A Framework for Understanding Intense Experience by Michael Piechowski and Chris Wells The Origins and Conceptual Evolution of Overexcitabilityby Chris Wells and Frank Falk Emma's Iron Man Blog - The Curse of Tony Stark Emma's Jerry Maguire Blog - The Disintegration of Jerry Maguire ‘Neurotribes – The Legacy of Autism and How To Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently by Steve Silberman The Positive Disintegration Podcast Apple Substack Spotify Bio – Chris Wells Christiane Wells, PhD, LSW is the president and founder of the Dąbrowski Center, an organization that provides reliable information and resources about the theory of positive disintegration and the psychology of giftedness. Streaming is a subject that's often left weirdly opaque, but this week's guests bring industry insights that are illuminating and informative. The starting point is a new series on the Criterion Channel called Close to Home in which filmmakers drew inspiration from their own homes and everyday lives, from Martin Scorsese to Maya Deren to Blake Edwards to Chantal Akerman. It was co-programmed by Nellie Killian, programmer at Screen Slate, and Chris Wells, who works at MUBI in distribution. They discuss what's different about programming for streaming, and the specific challenges and opportunities posed by the past year's upheaval and the reopening of movie theaters. Both are also voracious movie-watchers, so they also talk about their endless pursuit of titles on streaming and beyond.
