As a budding gardener myself, I realize how important it is to have representation in the horticultural space (as EVERY space needs adequate representation). Today's featured sustainable brown girl is doing exactly that with her podcast Black in the Garden. Colah B Tawkin is comedian, life-long nature lover, and host of the Black in the Garden podcast. Using her extensive horticultural knowledge, her endless love for Black people, and her keen ability to teach in a spirit of joy and kinship, she has built a village of Soil Cousins and is taking up space in the plant industry! It's been such a joy having fellow podcasters join me in the pod as they never disappoint and have such wonderful insights about plant parenthood and plantrepreneurship. I met this episode's guest in 2020 and figured it was time to have her back on to catch up and explore a concept she'll be tackling on the next season of her show: the past, present, and future of black people in horticulture. Colah has created an amazing brand called Black in the Garden that has blown up in the last couple of years, and created a space for so many people to feel seen within the plant community. Brother.earthh, the Botanical Brotha, Brayan discusses how plants were an integral part of his transition from Puerto Rico to New Jersey. We learn how plant shops aren't necessary in Puerto Rico because of the rich biodiversity on every corner. He lies about his houseplant count yet keeps it beautifully transparent about culture shock and coming to terms with queerness as a teen in New Jersey. Colah and Brayan attempt to dismantle patriarchy as it relates to the disconnect between appreciating nature and perceived masculinity. Spoiler alert: it's hard out here for a femme! . . #costagate lead to the very significant revelation about tropical biodiversity as it relates to our Blackety black history. Shout out to Blackmenwithgardens for bringing that to the forefront! Colah and Brayan get into the impact of #costagate on the black plant community, scoff at white privilege and celebrate the dope contributions of Africa's biodiversity to our collective houseplant collections. On Episode 8 Colah B Tawkin shouts out our non binary peeps and insists we embrace Kwanzaa365. We tap dance on politics and climate change as opposed to being politically neutral. Colah charges wildfires and global decay to white supremacy then encourages us to seek refuge in plants! Giveaway winners are announced! We start with her transition from long time beauty blogger @clumpsofmascara to the plant lady we've come to cherish who still be fightin anxiety attacks and keeping it quite 100. Colah and Brittany recall their warm(hey FL hey) and mostly fuzzy memory of that one time in Orlando when literal Black Girl Magic (shout out to CaShawn!) brought them together pre-plants also pre-IG. A high key #Floridagardenersbelike bragging session ensues and Colah can't take it. Brittany shares her early bird self care/plant routine, succulents as unexpected divas, how to shop in your neighbor's yard for plants (again with the FL bragging) and so much more including how she was plant blind as a child. They discover is a mutual distaste for alocasia sanderiana and missed HBCU experience as FAMU Rattlers.
