We welcome the wonderful and multi-talented Justin Q. Williams to our show to chat about his episode of 'Design School' on QVC+. Justin is not only an interior designer, but also an artist, furniture designer, and TV star who you might remember from Design Star: Next Gen on HGTV. The Atlanta-based designer talks to us about his journey from creating 3D plans as a 12-year old to now mentoring others. He emphasizes the importance of interior designers learning photo styling and business, and being able to pivot quickly. Justin also discusses designing restaurants vs. residential homes and why his special episode of Design School will be perfect for those living in a townhouse or row house. Additionally, Justin reveals more about his furniture line and art collections, which he named after family members to honor his amazing support system. What You'll Hear On This Episode: Special shout out to Justin's dad who bought him architecture and design programs at 12 years old, that he jumped into and fell in love with the process. How mentorship and working in many facets of design helped Justin develop the skills he has today. How the experience of making the season finale episode of Design School differed from his show on HGTV, Design Star. How Design Star changed his life (many months of 12 hour days) and business once the show was out. The importance of learning how to pivot and be able to change plans quickly as a designer. More behind his furniture business and why he named certain pieces after his family members to honor his support system. The importance of building great relationships with people, because you never know what they can turn into. The difference between designing a restaurant vs. a residential home. A sneak peek into some of Justin's highlights of his Design School episode! Mentioned in This Episode: Justin Q. Williams Trademark Design Co. Design Star Design School Decorating Dilemma: Thanks Gloria! First off, your room looks so good, and we love your wall color. And, you nailed the bed. For what you can change, Justin thinks you should focus on the sides of the bed. Whether it's adding mirrors or some sweet art, that will make the size seem bigger. Then, over the bed, adding something round and textural will compliment the art and mirrors on both sides of the bed and balance the wall. Justin would switch the lamps on the tables and for accessories..remember: fashion is second and function is first. There is no such thing as too big of a lamp, unless it can't fit! Layering is a good thing and also makes the room feel full and curated. Thanks so much and we can't wait to see the updates!

How to Decorate
Ep. 224: designer Mikel Welch

How to Decorate

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 26, 2021 57:42

We are thrilled to welcome the talented and hilarious Mikel Welch this week. Mikel shares his colorful journey with us to becoming an interior designer and TV show host, going from offering free design on Craigslist to now working on The Drew Barrymore show and co-hosting Roku's Murder House Flip. Mikel talks with us about how set design informed his perspective on home decor, the bold move he made with Steve Harvey that paid off, how he taught himself design, and the importance of knowing what you are working with before you commit to anything in design. Mikel also has great advice for spray painting, finding the right plants, and navigating thrift stores. What You'll Hear on This Episode: Mikel has always been bold and not afraid to jump in and say “yes”. Posting on Craigslist to help people decorate one room led to Mikel meeting a decorator on Dexter, which opened his mind to the wonderful world of set design. From Jerseylicious to The Steve Harvey Show to Design Star, what are some of Mikel's takeaways from set design and TV? What is it really like working with Drew Barrymore? His rule of thumb — if you can touch it, it needs to be real! How Mikel creates drama when working with a neutral palette. What's really behind those big barn doors in his NYC apartment. The importance of planning out the scale and laying out images to see if the elements work. Don't be shy to get in there and really work it through. Ways we can create impact and have fun with spray paint. Why Mikel calls showhomes the gift that keeps giving and his love of Kips Bay. His thrift store rules learned from Emily Henderson. If it's not a hell yes, it's a hell no! And always do a second lap. Decorating Dilemma Hi Melissa! Thanks for writing in. Mikel loves your Pinterest board of wonderfulness but wants to narrow it down so we can get down to what will work best. First, start with wallpaper, which should be the backdrop. Mikel would like to see soft white trim, which would make it bright and airy, and really balance things off. For the awkward window, large drapery is one option. Another can be a singular rod with pinch-pleated draped, in a solid color. In terms of furniture, consider spray painting the dresser so it matches the crib and swapping out the hardware for something more modern. Your artwork may work great on a larger wall as your impact pieces, and it will pick up on the wallpaper just across the way. We know you believe the layout is awkward, but make some of these changes and we think you will be pleasantly surprised! Last but not least, Mikel has to say it — the carpet has got to go! If you rip it out in just the nursery, hopefully, there's something great underneath. You've got the bones, now you just have to lay everything down!   Click here for a machine-generated transcript. This week, I spoke with Carmen De La Paz. Carmen is an Emmy-nominated TV personality. She spent years appearing on HGTV and the Oprah Winfrey network. She's a carpenter, an artist, a bilingual host, a singer, an actor, a musician, a dancer and more. Carmen is also a stroke survivor who's story involves a helicopter ride, waking up to the last rites, multiple hospital infections (including sepsis and staph), and encephalitis. And today she is back to working with power tools, creating art, supporting the community of Waukesha, WI, and figuring out her next app. And Carmen is an absolute delight to speak with as she shares her story. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and raised in Wisconsin, Carmen is an alumna of Syracuse University and has a BFA in Music Theatre. She also studied Broadcast Journalism though the UCLA Certificate program. Carmen is a musician, plays nine instruments and has an amazing vocal style. Carmen's Demo Reel See Carmen in action here: https://youtu.be/Yd-iXM8dk-Y Gratitude A recurring theme from many survivors is gratitude. Many of us, while we don't recommend the stroke experience, feel a sense of gratitude for the life we have now. I'm one of them. Carmen talks about how grateful she is for her life today. Neuro Nerd Joe Borges expressed that sentiment, too. As did Kristen Aguirre and Vince Holland among others. I get that not everyone will feel that way. Sometimes the particular deficits we are left with make that harder. And some people don't make it. We may be grateful because we realize things could have been so much worse. But many times stroke makes us reassess our life. It suddenly interrupts normal life. Everything has to stop, whether we want it to or not. And that interruption isn't just about a week off. It can be months or years. And that interruption is a time to stop and rethink what we are doing. That's interruption can be something we are grateful for. It makes us stop and make decisions about how we want to live our lives going forward. While I might like to see all my deficits go away tomorrow, I wouldn't want to not have had this experience. It's made me who I am today. And it's brought amazing people into my life. But again, I don't recommended having a stroke. While Carmen and I and others had to be forced into this shift, if you haven't had a stroke, you can still take a break and rethink your priorities to make sure they really are bringing value into your life. And take some time to put together your own gratitude practice to recognize the things that bring value to your life. Waukesha, WI Waukesha, WI is Carmen's home town. With a population of roughly 70,000 people, it's just outside Milwaukee, and a couple hours away from Chicago. And the town has really embraced Carmen. She's working on civic projects, and the love she has for the community really comes through in our conversation. Art and Stroke Carmen talks about the change to her art since her stroke. Her description sounds more disciplined and focused that before. Before her stroke, she described her art as embodying the idea of catharsis -- a building and building until it bursts through. Since her stroke, it seems less chaotic. More refined, focused, and discipline. Here's an article about the interview Carmen did just before her stroke. In addition to the changes brought on by our disabilities, stroke can affect us in other ways. I find my writing to be more focused now. But the example that really jumps out at me is the conversation I had with Seth Shearer a couple years back. You can listen to that conversation at http://Strokecast.com/Seth Seth is a Seattle artist. After his stroke, his art changed dramatically. The change was so dramatic it felt like a different person painted it. Seth began to paint under his middle name of Ian because of the difference. The things we want to say and how we want to say them are influenced not just by the outside world, but by how we perceive the outside world. Our senses provide raw data, but our brains create meaning from that data. And when our brains change, the way they create that meaning also changes. Our ability to then express that meaning is impacted by how our brains can use our bodies, by how we can focus on a thing, and by the volume of mental resources we can bring to bear on bear on the project. And that can be a beautiful thing. Aneurysm Basics An aneurysm is an often misunderstood medical condition. The general public thinks it's when the brain just starts bleeding catastrophically. And that's close, but not quite right. In reality an aneurysm is a weak spot or bubble in the side of a blood vessel or at a spot where the blood vessels divide. As long as the aneurysm doesn't break, leak, or get too big, you can go your whole life with an aneurysm and never know it. Millions of people walk around with aneurysms in their brains and will never know. Carmen's aneurysms manifested for 10 years as migraines. That bulge in the wall of a vessel can cause problems and press against stuff it shouldn't. Remember, there's not a lot of extra space inside our skulls. They're pretty well packed. Unfortunately many folks don't get the scan that can show the aneurysm. You can't treat an aneurysm if you don't know it exists. If you do learn it exists, there are some amazing surgical procedures to treat it. Or if it's minor enough neurologists may suggest leaving it alone But sometimes they are weak enough that they break. And when they rupture and send blood coursing directly into the brain, the results are catastrophic. Many hemorrhagic strokes are caused by ruptured aneurysms and folks who survive are quite lucky. Motus Nova Motus Nova is a sponsor this week. I just started using the Motus Hand device. It's an air-powered, computer-controlled, robotic exoskeleton for my affected hand. It's a therapy tool, rather than an adaptive tool. One thing I really like about it is the way it collects data and scores my performance on its video games. It's sometimes hard to see the gains we make in therapy over time because they happen slowly. But the reports and data make it much easier to see improvements over time. I also learned after my first session that I have much less wrist extension than I thought. So now I know one more thing to specifically target. If you'd like to see if the Motus Hand or Motus Foot can help with your recovery, visit http://Strokecast.com/MotusNova and use the code Strokecast for 10% off your first month. Hack of the Week Clamps are an essential tool in woodworking. They give the carpenter and extra, super stable hand. You know who else can use an extra, super stable hand? Stroke survivors with limb weakness! A simple clamp is something you can use to hold a thing in place. Maybe that's a piece of timber. Maybe it's a cutting board. Maybe it's a piece of paper you're trying to sign. The variety of clamps available is mind boggling. The right one depends on what you want to do. You can find a bunch of different options on Amazon here.* Here's one in particular that seems one-hand friendly. I may need to pick up a few myself.* And of course, I'm still have a warm feeling for the traditional C-Clamps of my youth. You can find those here.* Explore some different options. We're coming to you late but once you see how much content we crammed into this episode you'll understand why. This week we thought we were bringing you an episode about the reboot of the early aught's classic, HGTV Design Star, but really what we ended up bringing you was almost 90 minutes of our white hot fury. We joked before recording that we'd have the show's run time of complaints, and we concluded that one can be petty and kind, and we hope we were able to strike the balance while still approaching the content with the level of curiosity demanded by Ted Lasso (spoiler alert: it was challenging).

That bitter sweet second place finish launched his design career, it gave him an opportunity showcase his work on a bigger stage and Dan has made the most of it. Thoughts on reality design shows are mixed, depending who you ask. In Dan’s case, coming from a small town in Oregon, Design Star gave him exposure on a huge platform. It gave hime the exposure to show his skills. From there, Dan has built his personal brand, his design firm and has been creating some truly groundbreaking design. Part of his design specialty includes the selection and use of tile, stone and crafting finished product from slabs. That is brought about this conversation. Are you an interior designer that daydreams about becoming the next big design star? Do you visualize your name in lights? But how do you get on TV? Is it all luck, hard work, or both? Kristin Giese joins Darla and Natalie to talk about an interior designer’s path to television. She shares the mindset you need to embrace, how to leverage your social media, what producers are looking for, and what YOU can do to land the big gig.  Kristin Giese is a talent manager, brand developer, and executive producer. She began her career building the Nate Berkus brand (amongst other talent). Over her career, she’s partnered with The Oprah Winfrey Show, Target, TLC, NBC, P&G, GMC, and many more. She states that “Television—for all of its vanity—is NOT a vanity project.” Before you become a design star—and can’t pick out a head of lettuce without being recognized—you have to put in the work and be humble. Kristin sees a lot of people who use “I’m the next big…” terminology and make the experience all about what matters to them.  But she points out that “The people that are really successful on television are making it about the audience.” You NEED to start with what matters to the audience—the people at home watching your show. How do you fill those shoes? How are you uniquely skilled to step within that role? Do you have someone in mind to co-star with you?  The hero of the story needs to be the observer—not you.  How social media influences your crack at design stardom Kristin believes that social media is a critical element in your design star journey. It’s your resume that exists in the world—you can’t let it sit in the back of your drawer collecting dust. You have to be consistently active and committed to posting and sharing who you are on various platforms. The top 9 on Instagram? Those three rows should tell the viewer exactly who you are. People should experience a three-dimensional you in those nine images.  It’s also imperative that you become comfortable with showing yourself in photos and videos. If you want to be an HGTV design star your face will be everywhere. If you want to be on television you are the brand. You can’t be resistant to the idea of showing yourself or you’ll struggle on TV.  Kristin notes that an audience shows up for people that they know: “The people who really connect make us feel who they are.” Are you funny? Stylish? An overworked Mom? An audience doesn’t want to just see perfection—they want to see the true versions of yourself that make you human.  As Kristin likes to put it: “Content is King, Character is Queen. Forever shall they reign.” Your social media must mesh the two.  Fact vs fiction: Design star reality Kristin points out that the path to stardom is never the straight line that you think it will be. Infact, you rarely make your money on television. The real money is made in the way you can go out in the world and create endorsement opportunities, sell books, etc. Being a design star is simply a tool to leverage to be able to do other things. This idea that you go on television and you immediately get rich and famous is folklore. The road to get there is far longer. Kristin’s seen networks cut shows that were in development for over a year. It’s the nature of the game—it’s failure after failure until it’s not. So you have to know your heart. What is your motivation for being on TV? Is your desire to reach a broader audience? Do you want endorsement work? Being a design star gives you a large platform. Kristen notes that it’s also really fun. It’s amazing to watch someone’s life change when you makeover their home.  So what type of portfolio do you need? How does the behind-the-scenes look working with producers for your own show? It is a linear progression? Kristin answers these questions and so much more in this episode. We’ve all seen and been enthralled with what happens on those TV Interior Design shows. There are so many great ones to choose from. And if we will be honest, every one of us who works in the design world has wondered what it would be like to star on one of those shows. Well, fellow wingnuts, wonder no more! This episode is a delightful conversation with Britany Simon - star of several TV Interior Design shows. Darla and Natalie talk with her about the behind the scenes world of those productions to find out whether it’s as glamorous as it seems and what benefits come to a designer who gets that kind of limelight. Britany also gives her best advice for anyone who wants to pursue the same types of opportunities.  In her characteristic way, Britany gives us the unvarnished truth. Be sure you listen! What You’ll Hear On This Episode of Wingnut Social [1:20] The new Tequila diet isn’t really working in spite of internet promises [2:30] Brittany Simon’s rise into the media limelight [5:30] The circumstances that led Brittany to television [10:04] The story behind TV design - how it really works [16:38] Why Britany first decided to try out for a TV design show [19:00] The opportunities that have come from being on TV as a designer [21:01] Britany’s advice for those interested in getting on a TV design show [22:59] The marketing that Britany does for her shows and brand [27:23] Britany’s learning curve for becoming comfortable on camera [29:24] The What Up Wingut round Connect with Britany Simon Britany Simon’s website Britany on Pinterest Britany on Instagram: @BritanySimon Britany on Facebook Resources & People Mentioned Best Room Wins Show The Design Star Show Hotel Impossible TV show Joanna Gaines Abbi McCollum on Wingnut Social FYI channel Bravo channel HGTV channel The Foundress (women in business group) BOOK: The DNA Of Relationships So you want to star on an Interior Design TV show, do you? Britany first put her name in to be considered for “The Design Star,” a show from HGTV. She didn’t know if she had a chance of making the cut because she’d never done any work on camera or in front of an audience, but she figured it was worth a try. She and her husband drove to Las Vegas so she could audition for the show and the rest is history. But what she discovered behind the scenes was a world of extremely hard work. She jokingly says she often ended her production days in the fetal position. The kind of things she had to deal with were unexpected. For example, she was assigned a design assistant who was not at all ready for the kind of work involved and who didn’t know how to go about sourcing the items she would need. So Britany had to take that on herself. She also had to work tirelessly on the things the show’s producers assigned to her to meet the deadlines for the show - including a number of DIY projects. Listen to hear how the perceived glamor of being on the show turned out to be not so glamorous. What is the return on staring on your own design TV show? One of the things Darla was interested in finding out was how Britany’s many TV shows have benefitted her design business. After all, Joanna Gaines seems to have done pretty well from her TV opportunities.  What comes to light in this conversation is that Britany is a designer at heart and always wants to have her hands in the actual process, so to grow her business rapidly and in a way that puts her in more of a management role was not attractive to her - at all. So thankfully, that’s not what happened. While it’s true that Britany has had many and varied offers as a result of her television stardom, she’s been able to remain in her sweet spot of designing. She's been the choice of many clients simply because they saw her work on TV and took it upon themselves to track her down so they could have her design their homes. That’s the kind of exposure money can’t buy and Britany has made the most of it. We hope you’ll listen to this episode to get to know Britany. She’s down to earth, transparent, and a joy to talk with. You’ll find yourself feeling happy that she’s been the one to experience the kind of success she has - even if you secretly envy her - like we do.  Connect With Darla & Wingnut Social www.WingnutSocial.com On Facebook On Twitter: @WingnutSocial On Instagram: @WingnutSocial Darla’s Interior Design Website 1-877-WINGNUT (connect with us for your social media marketing needs) Subscribe to The Wingnut Social Podcast on iTunes, Google Podcasts, or TuneIn Audio Production and Show notes byPODCAST FAST TRACKhttps://www.podcastfasttrack.com Clean and compress CSS files for an optimized website. In fact, according to a new survey by Liberty Mutual Insurance, more than half of Americans are worried that an unexpected issue will arise in their house, and even planned home improvement projects bring lots of concerns.   In this interactive and visual segment, follow celebrity designer and contractor Chip Wade on a tour through his beautiful Atlanta home while learning how he’s used smart technology around the house to alleviate worries, and maintenance steps to take now to avoid bigger problems.   Whether you are tackling a big project or making small upgrades, there are certain tasks that are best completed by the fall, before the colder, rainier months set in.   About Chip Wade Atlanta native Chip Wade has building in his blood. Coming from a long line of experienced carpenters and woodcraftsmen, Chip began working with his father at an early age – and over the years developed an interest in carpentry, landscaping and renovation. Chip transitioned into media in 2007, lending his carpentry skills to the Atlanta team of HGTV’s Designed to Sell.
