PREVIEW — Professor Claire Jackson — James I and the "Mirror of Great Britain" Symbolic Jewel. Professor Jackson discusses her historical biography of King James I and the "Mirror of Great Britain," a symbolic composite jewel representing the political and cultural union of Scotland and England under unified monarchical authority. Jacksondetails that this distinctive gem contains precious stones from both Scottish and English royal collections, physically embodying the sovereignty integration and dynastic consolidation achieved through the Stuarts. Jackson documents that this symbolic jewel was subsequently sold and systematically dismantled by James I's son Charles during the English Civil Wars, representing the fragmentation of the Stuart vision for consolidated British monarchy and the political dissolution catalyzed by civil conflict and parliamentary assertion against royal prerogative.

Have questions, feedback, or thoughts on the show? We want to hear from you! Click on this link to send us a text message. In this episode of the Whole Grain Podcast, host Jim Lenz, Director of Global Education and Training at GEAPS, sits down with Dr. Gretchen Mosher, Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University. Dr. Mosher is a nationally recognized expert on grain quality, measurement systems, and safety management — and her research reveals why testing is one of the most powerful tools grain handlers have for protecting quality, reducing risk, and making informed operational decisions.Key TakeawaysTesting is about information — not punishment.Testing provides actionable data that helps grain handlers make better decisions about drying, storing, blending, and shipping products. It validates when quality is on target and identifies small issues before they become costly problems.A strong testing strategy is essential risk management. Most grain quality or safety failures start small. Routine sampling and testing catch issues early, protect millions of dollars in inventory, and support compliance with FSMA and other regulatory requirements. Both incoming and outgoing testing matter.Testing inbound grain establishes a baseline. Testing outbound grain provides documentation and leverage when customers question quality — proving the product met standards when it left the facility.Consistency is king: garbage in, garbage out.Valid sampling procedures are the foundation of trustworthy data. Inconsistent sampling or uncalibrated equipment create errors that distort results.Composite sampling and two-tiered testing improve reliability.Small samples collected over time create an accurate picture of quality. Simple rapid tests help flag samples needing deeper analysis.Testing data only has value if you use it.Data that's collected but ignored is wasted investment. Facilities should use test results to guide blending, storage decisions, aeration, safety controls, and customer allocation.Good testing protects export markets.Documentation proves that grain marketed as non-GMO, food-grade, or identity-preserved was handled correctly.Future technologies will enhance sampling — not replace judgment.Machine vision, sensors, and automated systems are improving sampling accuracy, but the core purpose remains the same: better information for better decisions.Pull Quotes“Testing gives you information — and people make better decisions when they have better data.”“Most big problems in grain start small. Testing helps you catch them early.”“Garbage in, garbage out. Consistent sampling is the key to reliable results.”“If you collect data and don't use it, you might as well put a pile of money on the floor and light it on fire.”“You have total control over the quality of your data.”Important Links & Related EpisodesIowa State University Department of Agricultural and Biosystems EngineeringIntroduction to Grain Quality Management (GEAPS Online Course)Grain Elevator and Processing Society champions, connects and serves the global grain industry and its members. A hunter dedicated to keeping the world safe from monsters has one final monster to fight. Genre: Horror   Excerpt: Curses and cures. Curses and cures. I've tried everything.  …flecks of blood in my eye. My joints have started to ache... My vision has started to flicker. And…now I'm finally afraid.   What story or stories am I revisiting in this episode? Each Season 8 episode is a standalone story, but it's connected to or inspired by a previous story through a character, a place, an object, a concept, a continuation of events (ahem, sequel), and so on. This story isn't inspired by a particular tale. I've just written a lot of stories about creatures and monsters. Here are a couple, if you're in the mood for a particular monster. "Chainmaker" (werewolf) "The Hunter and the Crypt" (vampire)   MY FIRST BOOK (yay)Ever wonder how I've gotten all these hundreds of stories written?  I have a method. And I talk all about it in my book called Fictioneer's Field Guide: A Game Plan for Writing Short Stories. It's now available from Amazon as an eBook, paperback, and hardcover. You can also get there from my Store page: STORYFEATHER STORE The Store page also has sign-up forms for my two email newsletters: Storyfeather Gazette (if you'd like to keep up with the fiction I create) Fictioneer's Field Guide (if you'd like writing tips and guidance from me) Choose what you want. Composite of several figures in silhouette. Bottom foreground left and center, two figures from chest up with various missing limbs and digits reach to the right. They are zombies. Bottom foreground right, a figure from chest up, holding both hands against their head. Shadows representing gravestones lie at angles behind the figure. Left moving into frame is a ghostly cloud in which the outline of a face and a hand are visible. Right of frame, sitting on an outcropping, a werewolf howls against a glowing moon. Top center floating in the sky, a vampire wearing a cloak and reaching out. At center from back, a hooded figure from torso up, holding a long stake propped over the right shoulder. Upper left corner, a patch of stalactites. Watermark of "Storyfeather" along forearm of figure at bottom right.

SHOW NOTES: Welcome to The Money Pit Home Improvement Show! Today, we've got a jam-packed hour filled with expert advice and practical DIY solutions for all your home improvement projects. Here's a rundown of the main topics and caller questions we'll be tackling today: - Instant Hot Water Solutions: We'll explore smart fixes like hot water recirculation pumps that deliver hot water instantly and can save you up to 17,000 gallons of water annually, including how they work, their cost, and DIY-friendly options. - Building Your Dream Patio: Thinking about a new patio for fall? We'll guide you through building a poured concrete patio from scratch using crack-resistant concrete, covering prep, pouring, and finishing techniques. - The Power of Composite Flooring: Discover why this next-generation flooring material is becoming a favorite for its stylish, affordable, durable, and waterproof qualities, perfect for any room, along with installation tips. - Fall Fireplace Safety: Before you light that first cozy fire, we'll discuss essential steps to prep your fireplace for safe use, including inspections, cleaning, and detector checks.   Q & A: - Nancy from Illinois is trying to build a deck but is battling massive tree roots. We advise her to consider designing the deck to require fewer supports or potentially having a tree company grind sections of the roots. - Colin is building a secure safe room and looking for a vault door. We suggest repurposing an old safe door or using a heavy-duty commercial steel door with multiple deadbolts, with an added tip on reinforcing cinder block walls with rebar and concrete. - Katherine has changed her lighting design for her basement and wants to know how to patch up old fixture holes. We recommend disconnecting any live wires, using ceiling plates if wires remain, or patching with drywall if the wiring is completely removed and dead. - Amanda from Pennsylvania just bought a 100-year-old home with beautiful original hardwood floors that squeak, especially on the stairs. We suggest locating and tightening the loose boards using specialized trim screws that won't back out like nails. - Sandy spilled hot wax on her carpet and upholstered chair and needs to know how to clean it. We gave her a clever trick: use a brown paper bag and a hot, non-steam iron to melt the wax, which then sticks to the bag for easy removal. - Jim (via email) asked if his new crawl space door needs to be weatherproofed like other exterior doors. We affirm that it absolutely does, recommending a drip edge, silicone caulk, and a solid coat of exterior paint to protect against moisture and damage.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? Mike & Tommy go through a great mailbag question on composite models and reusable models, along with how this changes in Fabric.Whoa! I think I'm triggered after listening to both your composite model episode and your managing multiple dataset episode. Isn't a fair bit of the question similar however much of the discussion seems different between episodes... In one sense- the gold standard seems to be thorough with data modeling/dataset development to build a dataset that can be used in multiple thin reports as needed. But the use of composite models seems to be somewhat discouraged - even though this is another way to re-use key datasets to answer business questions without re-doing the exact same transforms. It was alluded to but not explored that Fabric has better ways of doing this. With the data warehouse or Lakehouse... can you expand on that? Thanks for the podcast.
