Send us a textThis week, millions of Christians reflect on Jesus — especially during the Easter season. But for Jehovah's Witnesses, that relationship is framed in a very different way.In this episode of The Critical Thought, we illustrate how that belief system actually works — through a unique skit, a real-life experience from a former elder, and some critical questions every Jehovah's Witness should be asking.
In a bygone time, we had celebrated architecture critics, historians and thought leaders like; Ada Louise Huxtable, Lewis Mumford, Jane Jacobs and Vincent Scully. These were gifted thought leaders with a willingness to share their views, good or bad, but never indifferent. They and others influenced the manner in which we looked critically at the shape and purpose of the spaces where we live work and play. Arch Daily wrote a piece in 2012 called The Architect Critic is Dead (just not for the reason you think). Is it. Is it, really? I don't think the architect critic is dead, it has changed. It's like Syndrome's quote from The Incredibles. That when everyone has superpowers, no-one will be a superhero. It's this dilution of meaning through social media where everyone has an opinion and no hesitation about sharing it. Very little self-awareness and a platform, then everyone is a critic but without the critical thinking or communication skills to articulate their ideas effectively. Enda Donagher and I chop this idea up a Biot and he shares his experience in the business over the past 30-years plus. Enda and I talk about the business and his work. Designer Resources Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home. Where excellence meets expertise. ThermaSol - Redefining the modern shower experience. Without steam, it's just a bathroom. Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home! - Where service meets excellence TimberTech - Real wood beauty without the upkeep Donagher's firm addresses the architecture and interior design and his work is nuanced through a personalized approach and sensibly modern in look and feel. The ideas regarding the architect critic is relevant for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the opportunity to deconstruct the ideas that go into creating amazing work. If the work can be deconstructed, it provided a forum for critical thought to better our architecture and design. If we can apply critical thought, share ways to improve, then Syndrome was wrong. Everyone truly can be a super because everyones work is better and the level of expectation is raised. I enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do too. You'll hear all about it, right after this. Thank you, Enda. Loved our chat. Thank you to my incredible partner sponsors, ThermaSol, TimberTech, Pacific Sales, and Design Hardware. Amazing companies and great friends to the trade so please give them an opportunity for your next project. And, thank you for listening, subscribing the show and sharing with your colleagues. In this episode, we speak to Nivedita Menon about her new book, Secularism as Misdirection: Critical Thought from the Global South (Duke University Press, 2024; Permanent Black, 2023). Secularism as Misdirection is an ambitious and wide-ranging work, unravelling a term that is perhaps as contentious as it is ubiquitous in discourses of the Global South. Working across political theory, legal history, and religious thought, Menon reveals the dangers of secularism's false promise—likening it to a magic trick that draws "attention from where the trick is happening ... to objects that are made to appear more fascinating." Nivedita Menon is Professor at the Centre for Comparative Politics and Political Theory at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. Her previous books include Recovering Subversion: Feminist Politics Beyond the Law (University of Illinois Press, 2004) and the landmark work, Seeing like a Feminist (Penguin/Zubaan, 2012). She has co-authored and edited several volumes, including Power and Contestation: India Since 1989 (2nd edition: Bloomsbury, 2013). In addition to her award-winning work as a scholar and translator, Menon is a prominent public intellectual, whose writing on issues such as academic freedom and feminist politics in India can be read at kafila.online, a vital independent blog that she helped found. Arnav Adhikari is a doctoral candidate in English at Brown University, where he works on the aesthetics and politics of Cold War South Asia. A conversation about burnout, resentment, and wholeness with Lisa V. Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project.THE PURSUIT OF CONTENTMENTWelcome to our miniseries on contentment. Over the next five months, we are going to explore what it means to pursue contentment. We'll talk about how it changes the way we live, love, and lead, and I hope you're here for it.Now, before we get started, let's talk about what contentment is not. Contentment is not an excuse for passivity, disobedience, or complacency. It is a fine balance between faith and gratitude. Contentment is not the end of the road, a final destination we somehow get to, but a component that makes the journey easier and more fulfilling. It is the beautiful absence of strife, pride, and competition.Contentment recognizes capacity and it yields to calling in whatever form it may come.MEET LISA V. FIELDSLisa Fields, one of the world's most sought-after Christian apologists, combines her passion for biblical literacy with her heart for sharing God's love with all she meets.Since starting the Jude 3 Project, Fields has received several honors, most notably, Christianity Today's recognition of her work as an apologist in the African American community.Lisa is taking us behind the scenes to talk about how the pursuit of contentment showed up in one of the hardest periods of her life. Critical theorist Alberto Toscano sits down with Am Johal to discuss the emergence of critical theory alongside fascism's rise in the 1920s and 30s. He speaks of Georges Sorel as a politically radical figure from the time period, highlights the role of political violence in the emergence of fascism, and delves into contemporary American currents of fascism – particularly focusing on the racialized form of state terror present in the United States. From there, Alberto discusses the concept of fascism and its continued relationship to settler colonial formations, its association with extreme neoliberalism, and the importance of figures like Aimé Césaire, W. E. B. Du Bois, Angela Davis, and George Jackson in emphasising manifestations of racial fascism. He acknowledges the complexity of using terms like American fascism, and mentions the need to understand the dynamics and political economy underlying the far-right movements in the U.S., which are the result of white homogeneity and privileged groups imagining their annihilation and victimisation. The hosts can't help but burst out laughing at the absurdity of it all, but they also acknowledge that some of these techniques could be useful in certain situations. The episode ends with the hosts and the villain sharing some of their own personal leadership experiences, including some of their most embarrassing moments. It's a lighthearted episode that reminds us that even superheroes and supervillains can learn a thing or two about leadership. Tune in and join in on the fun!

The Dr. Seuss story "Too Many Daves" is about a family with too many children all named Dave, and how it becomes difficult for the parents to keep track of and distinguish between them. Similarly, in the digital media realm of eDiscovery, there may be too many voices sharing non-substantive information, making it difficult for professionals to distinguish between valuable contributions and those that may be less meaningful. The paper 'A Few More Minutes for Sale: Why Attention Is A Scarce Resource And How Media Organizations Can Use Neuroeconomic Wisdom To Buy More of It,' aims to inspire conversation on consumers' attention to news and information from the media's journalistic productive output vehicle and may be beneficial for cybersecurity, information governance, and legal discovery professionals seeking to break through the clutter of today's digital media messaging in the world of eDiscovery. The post ‘Too Many Daves' in eDiscovery? How High-Velocity Online Sharing May Be Undermining Critical Thought in the Industry appeared first on ComplexDiscovery.

"A Problem Well Stated is Half Solved," said the late Charles Kettering who headed the GM research department in the mid 20th century. How does this apply to the application of critical thought in coaching, especially in minor hockey? Dean Holden explains what it means and how it applies, referring as well to the work of Robert Ennis ("Critical Thinking Dispositions"). Also mentioned is the 2006 World Cup match between Argentina and Serbia/Montenegro in which the Argentines completed 26 consecutive passes before scoring. Here is the YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR3Om0WfErAThe Robert Ennis research document PDF can be found online.(Note: As Richard Bercuson reiterates in the podcast, there is not, nor has there ever been, research suggesting a link between being near plastic pylons and cancer.)Contact: richard(at)grassrootsminorhockey.comTwitter:Richard - @berky544Dean - @SportIQTraining
There are too many people today who are following the loudest voice in the room. We need to be people who develop the ability and the courage to think for ourselves. As our society descends further into chaos, we need people who can discern what is right and follow it, even if it means they're going alone. Fabi and I have been discussing how people use or don't use critical thought to check in with why they believe what they believe for several episodes since we began the podcast. In this episode we listen in on a thought experiment on Youtube, conducted by Dr. Peter Boghossian that engages with the claim: "My Body, My Choice" should be consistent for vaccines and abortion. We react to the participants responses and give our thoughts on how people back up their own beliefs and how they react to other people's beliefs. Dr. Peter Boghossian's Bio: Dr. Peter Boghossian's main focus is bringing the tools of professional philosophers to people in a wide variety of contexts. Peter has a teaching pedigree spanning more than 25 years and 30 thousand students - in prisons, hospitals, public and private schools, seminaries, universities, Fortune 100 companies, and small businesses. His fundamental objective is to teach people how to think through what often seem to be intractable problems. Peter's primary research areas are critical thinking and moral reasoning. His doctoral research studies, funded by the State of Oregon and supported by the Oregon Department of Corrections, consisted of using the Socratic method to help prison inmates to increase their critical thinking and moral reasoning abilities and to increase their desistance to criminal behavior. Peter is also a an Author and his publications can be found in The New York Times, Time Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Areo, The American Mind, The Clearing House, Corrections Today, CounterPunch, Education Policy Analysis, Educational Philosophy and Theory, Essays in Philosophy, Federal Probation Journal, Free Inquiry, Informal Logic, Inside Higher Ed, Journal of Correctional Education, Journal of Philosophy of Education, The Los Angeles Times, Motherboard, Quillette, New Discourses, National Review, New Statesman, Offender Programs Report, The Philosophers' Magazine, Philosophy's Future, The Radical Academy, Radical Pedagogy, Scientific American, Skeptic, Skeptical Inquirer, The Spectator, Teaching Philosophy, Truthout, and USA Today. From the domestic to the international, how can we anticipate, mitigate, and come to terms with violence? This episode of CORDIScovery looks at how victims of domestic violence can be better served. We ask what role violence plays in distracting communities from preparing for climate change. And we explore how the perception of historic violence plays into a culture's notion of ‘self'. Catharina Vogt's project IMPRODOVA, set out to train responders to help the victims of domestic violence more effectively. The team developed tools that are now being used across the board by the police in France, resulting in more charges being pressed than before. Halvard Buhaug, lead writer on a chapter of the IPPC's latest climate change report, ran the CLIMSEC project. He tells us that the relationship between climate change and violence might not be what we imagine. Senior lecturer in political theory at the University of Edinburgh, and the co-director of the Centre for Ethics and Critical Thought, Mihaela Mihai's research focuses on political memory, art and politics, theories of oppression and political emotions. Her GREYZONE project considered how the perception of historic violence plays into cultural identity.

Critical Race Theory boils down to not just a theory, but a worldview. And if you reject that worldview, you're labeled a racist, bigoted, mean-spirited, and ignorant. Here are just a few examples of that worldview: In the name of equity, UCLA law professor and critical race theorist Cheryl Harris has proposed suspending private property rights, seizing land and wealth, and redistributing them along racial lines. https://nypost.com/2021/05/06/what-critical-race-theory-is-really-about/ (https://nypost.com/2021/05/06/what-critical-race-theory-is-really-about/) Ibram X. Kendi, who directs the Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University, has proposed the creation of a federal Department of Antiracism. This department would be independent of (i.e., unaccountable to) the elected branches of government and would have the power to nullify, veto or abolish any law at any level of government and curtail the speech of political leaders and others deemed insufficiently “antiracist.” https://nypost.com/2021/05/06/what-critical-race-theory-is-really-about/ (https://nypost.com/2021/05/06/what-critical-race-theory-is-really-about/) One practical result of the creation of such a department would be the overthrow of capitalism, since, according to Kendi, “in order to truly be antiracist, you also have to truly be anticapitalist.” https://nypost.com/2021/05/06/what-critical-race-theory-is-really-about/ (https://nypost.com/2021/05/06/what-critical-race-theory-is-really-about/) Support this podcast
The White House press corps. is one of the worst I have seen second only to the one covering Trump. Today is your day. I will cover whatever you want. A ‘serious reporter' challenged Jen Psaki about first dog biting someone. She ridiculed him civilly. It was clear that Jen Psaki must have known there was a dog story roaming around the right-wing space because she was ready. Jen Psaki lays waste to ‘Genius Reporter' suggesting an uninformed option out of Afghanistan. While correspondents are supposed to ask questions to keep us informed. Critical theorist Alberto Toscano joins Am Johal in conversation about his work and writings, as he joins SFU as a visiting faculty member with the Digital Democracies Institute in SFU's School of Communication. In this episode, they discuss Alberto's writing on the philosophy of fanaticism, and conflicting discourse and counter-histories around the figure of the fanatic, which historically takes many forms, from abolitionist leaders to peasant revolutionaries. Alberto and Am also dive into global and historical trends of authoritarianism, racial capitalism and the notion of ‘late fascism.' Alberto speaks to expanding our concept of fascism, to recognize iterations outside of what could be thought of as European fascism. They also talk about neoliberal tendencies in post-secondary administration, and the workings of mechanisms that maintain or fortify power structures within institutions. JT & Lady Cee were raised as Jehovah’s Witnesses from the age of five years old. Lady Cee was a regular pioneer and went to serve where the need is great with her pioneer partners. JT served at Brooklyn Bethel and was an elder in the local congregation. After spending a combined 60 years of Watchtower indoctrination, they discovered that something was seriously wrong with the 1914 teaching. This led them to doing more research and after reading Crisis of Conscience by former Governing Body Member Raymond Franz, they faded from the organization. JT & Lady Cee realize the importance of giving back to help those they left behind. Therefore, in 2013, they began hosting the Critical Thought podcast on the EXJW Critical Thinker YouTube channel. Their decision to join their voice with the community of other Ex-JW activists is resulting in many happy endings as individuals begin waking up and learning the real truth about “The Truth.” Learn more about them on their website and other social media outlets.

Critical thought is what defines as a human. Our ability to use rationale thought allows us to take the emotion out of our decisions to ensure the choices we make will be the right ones for not only the present moment but also the future. Critical thought nowadays, however, has become harder and harder with saturation of social media, and curated news feeds that only show us things we like, and get us to hate the things we don't. All of that uses emotion as the driving factor and really clouds our critical thinking process. So how can we become better critical thinkers and more importantly, how can we teach our kids this? Join us as we discuss this on another episode of the Better Mental Health show. The following article was used in th

Welcome back audience to episode 24 of Triple Advantage! This week we cover some self analysis from the Royal City Society team, we continue our divination of the DMG, and address yet another Critical Thought. We also answer some community questions that we post on our instagram @royalcitysociety. As game designers we try to incorporate a bits of ourselves in the game world to add a sense of realism and connection for players and their characters. However, we do acknowledge that to subvert expectations at our table we need to continually step out of our own comfort zones and explore more diverse and complex themes for our games. This week marks the start of a longer discussion the RCS team will be having regarding the community we want to build.

Today’s episode is all about the intersection of art education, joy, and critical thought. Our guests, Raygan Barrett & Nicole Clevenger, are the co-founders of Wonderment, creators of curated art experience that help educators and parents cultivate creative thinking. But the program is about more than just art; it’s a combination of connecting to the world, connecting to each other, and learning about all aspects of life through the lens of art. Wonderment is basically a combination of Nicole and Raygan’s experiences. Nicole's background in informal education allows her to dive deep into the subject matter, play off of children's interests, and encourage learning through experience. As an artist, Raygan focuses more on exploration, thinking like an artist, and the creative process. The alchemy of these two approaches and experiences is a truly one-of-a-kind learning experience, for everyone involved. Plus, Raygan and Nicole have come up with some great ideas for how parents can bring Wonderment into their own communities this Summer. In The Not-Two, Lorenzo Chiesa examines the treatment of logic and God in Lacan's later work. Chiesa draws for the most part from Lacan's Seminars of the early 1970s, as they revolve around the axiom "There is no sexual relationship." Chiesa provides both a close reading of Lacan's effort to formalize sexual difference as incompleteness and an assessment of its broader implications for philosophical realism and materialism. Chiesa argues that "There is no sexual relationship" is for Lacan empirically and historically circumscribed by psychoanalysis, yet self-evident in our everyday lives. Lacan believed that we have sex because we love, and that love is a desire to be One in face of the absence of the sexual relationship. Love presupposes a real "not-two." The not-two condenses the idea that our love and sex lives are dictated by the impossibility of fusing man's contradictory being with the heteros of woman as a fundamentally uncountable Other. Sexual liaisons are sustained by a transcendental logic, the so-called phallic function that attempts to overcome this impossibility. Chiesa also focuses on Lacan's critical dialogue with modern science and formal logic, as well as his dismantling of sexuality as considered by mainstream biological discourse. Developing a new logic of sexuation based on incompleteness requires the relinquishing of any alleged logos of life and any teleological evolution. For Lacan, the truth of incompleteness as approached psychoanalytically through sexuality would allow us to go further in debunking traditional onto-theology and replace it with a “para-ontology” yet to be developed. Given the truth of incompleteness, Chiesa asks, can we think such a truth in itself without turning incompleteness into another truth about truth, that is, into yet another figure of God as absolute being? Lorenzo Chiesa is a philosopher who has published extensively on psychoanalysis. His works in this field include Subjectivity and Otherness: A Philosophical Reading of Lacan (MIT Press, 2007); Lacan and Philosophy: The New Generation (Re.press, 2014); The Not-Two: Logic and God in Lacan (MIT Press, 2016); and The Virtual Point of Freedom (Northwestern University Press, 2016). Since 2014, he has been Visiting Professor at the European University at Saint Petersburg and at the Freud's Dream Museum of the same city. Previously, he was Professor of Modern European Thought at the University of Kent, where he founded and directed the Centre for Critical Thought.

As the inflow of new information comes in, data has become the ultimate currency of thought. Many dangers have arisen as a result, such as bias thinking, quick to judge opinions and other speculations causing people to fall for false data. In the age of "Fake News", it is crucial as an investor to be objective in our thinking. On this episode, Dan & Nic discuss the many topics surrounding false data and what to do when receiving information which could potential diminish your investing abilities. Critical Thinking has become a scarce commodity, and we need to adapt better thinking skills to help remove our biases as human beings. Civilization and its Discontents: A Marathon Reading The Centre for Creative and Critical Thought at the University of Sussex together with the Freud Museum London are pleased to announce a marathon reading of Sigmund Freud's classic text, Civilization and its Discontents, at the Freud Museum on Sunday 14 June. Civilization and Its Discontents, written in 1929, remains the definitive text on human destructiveness. As news of wars around the globe, appalling brutality, religious conflict and sexual violence continue unabated, the relevance of this work is undeniable. ‘Men are not gentle creatures' Freud wrote, ‘but ...creatures whose instinct [is] aggressiveness.' The event is free with an admission ticket to the Freud Museum. There are no tickets and audience members can come and go as they please. This is a staged reading and interactive performance. The reading will last in all approximately four and a half hours. At the end, after the Museum closes, audience members are invited to stay for discussion and light refreshments. This staged reading revisits a classic text in a modern context, a face-to-face encounter for those hungry to engage with serious and pertinent ideas. A successful similar event took place in New York in January, and this is the first European marathon reading. Readers will include well known psychoanalysts, academics, writers, artists and performers. A list of confirmed names will be added shortly. “To read Civilization and its Discontents in 2015 is to bear witness to the deadly violence whose daily presence is all-too-familiar to us and imagine the conditions that might provide a loving counterweight to that violence.” Simon Critchley, Philosopher. Readers include: Sara Jane Bailes, University of Sussex Caroline Bainbridge, Roehampton University Julia Borossa, Middlesex University Peter Boxall, University of Sussex Josh Cohen, Goldsmiths, University of London, psychoanalyst Gerald Davidson, actor, researcher Simon Glendinning, LSE, Philosopher Anouchka Grose, psychoanalyst and author Rachel Holmes, historian and author Deborah Levy, novelist Michael Molnar, researcher and former Director, Freud Museum London David Morgan, consultant psychotherapist, psychoanalyst Bpas Bpa Ankhi Mukherjee, University of Oxford Cathy Naden, performer/writer Dany Nobus, Brunel University London Ruth Padel, poet Jocelyn Pook, composer and musician Eric Prenowitz, University of Leeds Alan Read, King's College London Caroline Rooney, University of Kent Nicholas Royle, University of Sussex Kalu Singh, author Marquard Smith, Kingston University David Williams, RHUL, writer, dramaturg Timberlake Wertenbaker, playwright Sarah Wood, University of Kent

In our return from the holiday, I spoke with Edie, a psychotherapist who works with the LGBT community to help manage the anxiety and depression that comes with managing the stigma it often faces. We discuss treatment options, anxiety, who you should see, how difficult it can be to see someone, and the difference between being LGBT Friendly and LGBT Knowledgable. Edie specializes in what we might term "identity conflict" and works with individuals toward a deeper sense of integration within a world that seems to demand labels for every experience under the sun but doesn't necessarily encourage understanding the experiences themselves. Her practice is queer as well as poly and kink friendly. She is dedicated to improving a sense of creativity, grace, thoughtfulness, and courage in the lives of individuals. Edie has been in the field for several years, having worked in community mental health with low-income adults who suffer from chronic and severe mental health disorders and is a fellow at the well-regarded Chicago Center for Contemporary Psychotherapy. Currently, she’s a doctoral student at the European Graduate School in Philosophy and Critical Thought, where she is focusing primarily on the politics, ethics, and physio-philosophical aspects of listening and subjectivity. Prior to her work as a psychotherapist and social worker, Edie worked in pastry, taught yoga, and completed her first Master's in Film and Digital Media. She also owns a BA in English and Women's Studies at the University of Chatham in Pittsburgh, PA.

Niki is an expert on the ascetic John Cassian and the French philosopher Michel Foucault. In this episode Niki and I discuss her newest book, Sites of the Ascetic Self. Niki is most interested in daily practices of discipline that can help and enable individuals to open to certain forms of self-transformation including transformation of our bodies, our emotions and our relation to other people. She discusses how her history places her into relationship with her current areas of study. We are shaped as subjects in this world, therefore one of Niki's core questions is: how can we become self-shaping and self-forming? Looking at the kinds of daily practices we each live and how those practices influence and inform our reality. We explore the value of recognizing the various interpretations and agencies that are present in every moment. We define the terms such as ethics, ascetic, and others. We discuss the modern understanding of mental health and the progressive pathologizing of one's relationship with the voices, urges, and powers formed within one's “head” or self. She is interested in the construction of one's character as a way of life. Niki Clements works at the disciplinary intersection between the history of Christian practice, philosophy of religion, and religious ethics. She specializes in Christian asceticism and mysticism in late antiquity, highlighting its resources for thinking through contemporary ethical formation and conceptions of the self. She is currently completing the first comprehensive treatment of the ethical thought of John Cassian (c.360-c.435), a late antique Catholic architect of Latin monasticism doctrinally marginalized for his optimistic views on human agency. Engaging Michel Foucault's late work on ethics-which sees Cassian as a crucial inaugurator of modern disciplinary subjectivity-she critiques the conceptual limitations that Foucault's philosophical categories impose on his reading of Cassian, late antique Christianity, and the study of religion. She also pursues a transdisciplinary approach with cognitive neuroscience to argue that ethical formation integrates consciousness, embodiment, and affectivity. She is the volume editor for Mental Religion: The Brain, Cognition, and Culture, as part of the forthcoming Macmillan Interdisciplinary Handbooks. http://rice.academia.edu/NikiClements Specialization: History of Catholic thought and practice, Christianity in late antiquity, asceticism and mysticism, religious ethics, philosophy of religion, theories and methods in the study of religion, religion, and science Academic History: Ph.D., Brown University, Religion and Critical Thought, 2014 M.T.S., Harvard Divinity School, 2007 B.A., Sarah Lawrence College, 2003 Music provided by: www.modernnationsmusic.com Learn more about this project at: www.thesacredspeaks.com

“Your heart has to be ready to handle the weight of your calling,” is what she said casually over Korean BBQ, and for this reason and more I grew up reading bell hooks. ‘Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery’ was my first dance with her mind. In it she taught me how to identify the ways that patriarchy, white supremacy and global capitalism threatened humanity’s well-being. More specifically, she challenged me to examine the ways in which our own families replicate models of oppression, sometimes trumping the need, or the awareness of the need, for self-care. bell hooks called on me to think critically as a strategy to heal from social and emotional trauma, a task that would require a lifetime of unlearning. When commissioned by Dr. Melynda Price, Chair of the African American and Africana Program at the Univ. of Kentucky to make this mix, I was struck by the fact that not a single song came to mind, which is unusual for my process. Typically I have an idea of the direction of the mix, with at least one song to start. But bell hooks has written over 30 books. What could I say musically that would affirm, celebrate and soundtrack her commitment to education, activism, radical openness and feminist scholarship? What music could match ‘the life of her mind?’ The moment I asked that question, Nina Simone appeared. I had a start. I continued to dig deep into the crates of bell hooks’ life in search of clues about music she loved. On one of those days, after a few hours of probing, she mentioned Tracy Chapman in a lecture. My second artist arrived. From there, I recognized that women’s voices would occupy a large amount of space on the mix. And how easy it would be to create a mix using only women to pay tribute to a world-renowned feminist thinker, right? No, this would not be true to the range of music I have access to, or the core of her ideas. bell warns us to not confuse patriarchy with masculinity. Teaching us that patriarchal dominance can only be destroyed when all of us adopt feminist politics. That said, I invited men to be a part of the honoring, particularly men I feel loved by. Would bell love Bilal? In the song ‘Robots,’ he critiques hyper consumerism similarly to the way she critiques the commodification of Black culture in her work. And Lionel Hampton is from Kentucky, did she grow up listening to the sound of his vibraphone? And consistently she’s made the important distinction between misogynistic and ‘conscious’ rap, would she dig Mos Def? And could Gregory Porter, speak to her encounter with desegregation in the classrooms of the Black south? In this moment I decided to put together a compilation of music that would communicate the essence of her message, or at least, my understanding of it. It would be a mix in dialogue form. I’ve learned so much from bell’s refusal to adhere to restrictions about what she could and could not write about, and what topics she could and could not explore. When she shifted her focus from critical gender theory with books like Ain’t I Woman: Black Women and Feminism and Yearning: Race, Gender and Cultural Politics to a series of books focused solely on love (Salvation, Communion and All About Love), I knew she was making the decision to become more accessible to communities, beyond the academy. I knew she wanted to have more nuanced conversations about the revolutionary qualities of love and through this series, I was reminded that love was located at the center of the pursuit of social justice. For this reason, I felt jazz had a place among the songs. Betty Carter’s ‘Open the Door’ and Freddie Hubbard’s ‘Red Clay’ has so much emotional and cultural wealth, and jazz itself provided the soundscape for many social movements and plenty of freedom fighters, Malcolm X included. I discovered the Uptown String Quartet in my college years while working in a record store. I was excited by the fact that they were four classically trained Black women musicians from Harlem and one of them, Maxine Roach, was the daughter of jazz drummer Max Roach. I’ve been listening to their song “JJ’s Jam” for about 20 years and never imagined having the opportunity to add it to one of my mixes. It’s a song from some of the quietest moments in my life; a song with so much space and beauty that I wanted to play with voices and personalities over the music. I thought of the bell hooks book “Rock My Soul: Black People and Self-Esteem,” which features the hand of fellow Kentuckian Muhammad Ali, whom bell loves, on its cover. In my research I discovered an interview between Nikki Giovanni and Ali and it fit perfectly between the song’s imaginary lines. Another book that came to mind during my process was Wounds of Passion: A Writing Life. It’s a memoir about love, writing and sexuality. Wounds of Passion tells the story of how bell wrestled with an emotionally charged long-term relationship that forced a questioning of her values and worldview. At the same time she was managing the stress of being a black woman academic in hostile predominantly white institutions. She shares that this was one of the most tumultuous romantic partnerships in her life, one that she still refers to, one that still tugs at her heart. Frida Kahlo and Diego came to mind and I used my favorite song from the movie’s soundtrack (Frida), “Alcoba Azul” to express the emotions that give birth to a complicated, transformative and sacrificial love. Finally, I wanted to leave listeners with the opportunity to feel a sense of hope. To operate from a place of abundance and not the despair normally attached to the business of struggle. I selected a song inspired by something I heard bell hooks say in an interview. She shared that through his life as a farmer and with his profound appreciation of the earth, her grandfather taught her about the importance of life beyond suffering. She took from him that people of color needed to move away from what can feel like a commitment to misery and shift our focus towards self-sufficiency, pleasure, joy and self-care. Aretha Franklin’s “How I Got Over” from the “Amazing Grace” album worked perfectly for these words. I had the opportunity to present this mix to bell hooks in person. She attended my lecture at the University of Kentucky’s Finding our Place: A Conference in Honor of the Work and Writing of bell hooks. I was moved beyond words by the level of attention she paid to my every sentence, image and sound. I was almost brought to tears when she cheered me on as an active and vocal member of the audience. She expressed to me a love for my mind, an interest in my work and an excitement about being fully seen by me, through my art. We broke bread and shared intimate stories about our histories and exchanged visions of our future. It’s safe to say we bonded. She invited me to her home and pointed out her most precious possessions; her books, kitchen, and meditation space. Her home was a Frida Khalo inspired sacred place with art collected from her travels around the world. The yellow and red painted wooden benches and chairs brought the African and Latin Diaspora to Berea, Kentucky. I felt instantly that the mix was a success. My selections were true of who I thought she was within and beyond print. bell hooks is a genius. she’s vulnerable and complex, sharp and unashamed of the way she walks the world. And with her courage, discipline and dedication, she’s carved out space for me to exist. Please enjoy “Soulful Critical Thought: bell hooks and the Making of a DJ Scholar,” for it was without a doubt, a labor of love.

Marc Stevens, author of Adventures In Legal Land and host of the No State Project, joins me to illuminate the dark and bizarre world of the so-called justice system. With this focus on law and the courts, we discuss the second form of doublespeak: jargon. Marc also explains his Socratic approach to defending against the doublespeak of lawyers, judges and tax collectors. "Doublespeak is not lying, nor is it merely sloppy language. It is the intentional use of euphemisms, synonyms, jargon, and vagueness which pretends to communicate but really does not, or implies the opposite of what it would appear to communicate." -Metta Winte Bumper Music: "One Million Lawyers" Tom Paxton Look Closer: The Doublespeak Dictionary by Leslie Starr O’Hara http://www.thedoublespeakdictionary.com/ Doublespeak: From Revenue Enhancement to Terminal Living : How Government, Business, Advertisers, and Others Use Language to Deceive You, by William Lutz http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2151216.Doublespeak MarcStevens.net http://marcstevens.net/ Adventures In Legal Land http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/061512299X?tag=openlibr-20 No State Project http://marcstevens.net/nsp-commercial-free.html?layout=defaulthttp://marcstevens.net/ William Lutz Biography http://www.sec.gov/spotlight/xbrl/2006/wlutz_bio.pdf
