Today, we're talking to arts entrepreneur and marketing consultant David Taylor. He works with a range of orchestras, arts organisations and individuals on developing their business and marketing strategy, with particular reference to digital media. In this podcast interview, we consider the changes the classical music industry has seen over the last year and if it has changed with regards to today's current trends and stylistics. We also discuss what the classical sector can learn from other industries such as pop, media and sports with regards to their marketing and branding. Additionally, David talks about how he develops a strategy with the clients he works with, using the example of the Philharmonia Orchestra. We talk about how musicians and organisations can best use social media and interact with their audiences, for example, the concert enhancement strategy of artists talking to their audience during a performance. Podcast interview recorded 16 July 2021; published 20 July 2021. One of the leading entrepreneurs in the world of classical music, David Taylor has built his career on a dynamic and energetic approach to bringing innovation to the arts, leading him to be named on Forbes 30 under 30 Europe 2018 list, alongside Paul Pogba, Rita Ora, Dua Lipa, Anthony Joshua, Maisie Williams and Little Mix. Described as an “arts innovator” by the BBC, David's accomplishments and pioneering approach to digital marketing in the arts has led him to become a highly sought after consultant with arts organisations and individuals in both Europe and the USA. David created Yorkshire Young Sinfonia (YYS) in 2015, growing it to reach an audience of over 7.5 million people in just 4 years. He also led YYS to win the Arts and Culture Award at the White Rose Awards 2016, the largest tourism awards in the UK. In 2015, the BBC Radio 4 programme “Birth of an Orchestra” documented the creation of YYS and allowed David to showcase his passion for classical music on the national stage. In addition, both David and YYS have featured on Sky News, BBC News, The Times, The Telegraph, BBC Look North, Classic FM, BBC Radio 3, Il Giornale and Classical Music Magazine. In 2017, David led YYS to become the first youth orchestra in the world to be 100% digital in partnership with the app Newzik, using iPads instead of sheet music. Episode 126: Al-Harf as a site of Negotiating Modernism and Unity The articulation of the Arabic letter in modern art in the Arab world has been a popular topic of discussion. The letter served 20th century artists on multiple levels and allowed for contradictory arguments. The letter became part of a more complex discourse of signs that drew on a collective and historical memory of difference, rupture and continuity. It disrupted and subverted the rhetoric of regional separation and promoted unity; its prominence in this imaginative and constructed discourse alluded to an emphasis on cultural overlaps, intersections, connections, and continuity between the Mashriq and the Maghreb. Equally, it gave artists comfort and confidence that came from the immediate perception of a marked cultural (and at times political) identity for the work. Manipulating the Arabic letter in art, thus, served as a mediator between national identity, heritage and modern art. Nada Shabout is a Regent Professor of Art History and the Coordinator of the Contemporary Arab and Muslim Cultural Studies Initiative (CAMCSI) at the University of North Texas. Incoming Northwest Heritage Centrum resident, Alice Gosti, invites Bebe Miller to have a conversation about dance, movement, and the context of their practices in the current moment. The two choreographers discover overlapping formative pedagogies and talk through the spatial experiences of zoom, intimacy and vulnerability in their bodies of work, the cultivation of collaboration and play, and the multiple influences of place, language, and connections with people. Listening to this conversation is a dance for the mind and offers new ways to think about how we move through the world. Alice Gosti is an Italian-American choreographer, hybrid performance artist, curator and architect of experiences. Alongside her company members, she has been working in public spaces and exploring unconventional performances since 2013. Gosti’s work uses the world, landscapes, and pre-existing architectures as stages. Recent productions include How to become a partisan (Velocity Dance Center, 2015) and Material Deviance in Contemporary American Culture (On the Boards, 2018). Gosti’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, commissions and residencies including being a recipient of the 2012 Vilcek Creative Promise in Dance Award, the 2012 ImPulsTanz danceWEB scholarship, a 2013 Bossak/Heilbron Award, part of the 2015 inaugural Intiman Theatre Emerging Artist Program as a Director, a 2015 Artist Trust GAP Grant, a 2015 and 2017 Seattle Office of Arts and Culture Award, a 2017 Artist Trust Fellowship, a 2016 NEFA National Dance Project Production and Touring Grant and, the inaugural Italian Council Grant from the Italian Government. In the "Law & Business" podcast, Episode 28, Raj Goel of Brainlink International talks about Operational Maturity in business. What is Operational Maturity and what are the levels of Operational Maturity (OML)?  The difference between the OMLs of businesses depends upon the standardization of the internal and external processes they employ, their competency in the services they provide, and the value they place upon industry investments. A firm with a low OML (level one or two) generally lacks the uniformity of resources and knowledge of operations to run a business effectively. Businesses with level two OMLs have generally reached a point where processes are more standardized and repeated but complete uniformity has not been achieved. In this podcast episode, Raj Goel talks about where his business, Brainlink International ranks on the OML chart, what his business did to climb to that level, and what can still be done to grow. At a level three OML, the business has established an overall consistency throughout the organization and within the services it delivers. The business is capable of developing strategic plans to drive its services as opposed to merely keeping them afloat. Businesses that have reached the operational maturity of a level four or five have learned to leverage their industries' products or services effectively.  The firm will deliver consistent service and support, a stable business environment, and proactive monitoring of its services or products. The difference between a level four and a level five business exists primarily in the more mature businesses' ability to enhance its customers gain a competitive edge within their industries. A firm with a high operational maturity level will act as a trusted provider and a trusted partner for its customers or clients. Raj Goel also discusses Brainlink's need for standard operating procedures (SOPs) and how following standard operating procedures helps build efficiencies and helps continue to grow the OML of Brainlink and build the business overall. Raj Goel, CISSP, is an author, entrepreneur, IT expert and industry leader that specializes in the field of cyber security and privacy law. As founder of Brainlink, Raj has spent more than 20 years developing proven IT solutions for a range of high-profile clients in the financial, construction, architectural and property management industries. His uniquely developed SOPCulture Process (winner of 2015 SmartCEO’s Culture Award) has changed the way his clients think about documentation by showing them how to develop processes for documentation of each and every task, allowing them to rapidly increase productivity, eliminate redundancies and increase quality of service to their clients. Here's a lightly-edited transcript of the podcast episode: Anthony Verna: Welcome to the Law & Business Podcast. I am here with Raj Goel from Brainlink International. How are you doing, Raj? Raj Goel: I'm doing great. How are you doing Anthony? Anthony: I am well, thank you Raj. Why don't you tell everybody who's listening about Brainlink? Raj: Brainlink is based in New York City and is an IT and cybersecurity consulting firm. We work with hedge funds, construction firms, and fast-growing businesses that are operationally mature/ Anthony: And I want to get into this topic of operationally mature businesses. You and I were having dinner and we talked about it for a little bit and it was a fascinating topic to me about how a business owner thinks about his or her business.  There is a difference between that operational maturity and not having that operational maturity. So why don't you give me your general thoughts on, on the topic? Raj: As far as the beginning, it's just not my revelation. General thought: There's a whole body of business literature that talks about OMs, operational maturity levels, and essentially there are five stages in every business is life cycle,

The Conspiracy (Phoneme Media) When leftist revolutionary Sergio's sniper shot misses the President of Venezuela, he's thrown into a sudden tailspin. As he attempts to escape the increasingly militarized regime, he winds up taking residence in a bohemian beachside commune, where he keeps a low profile until Lourdes, his former comrade, the object of his desire, and his possible betrayer, turns up one evening. Pursued by their former trainer in guerrilla warfare on the orders of the newly appointed Minister of the Interior, the two team up with unlikely partners to hatch a new plan for their survival. This poetic thriller, the second in Phoneme Media's City of Asylum imprint, challenges the origin myth of South America's radical left, resulting in its author's exile from Venezuela. Between May 1, 2016 and January 11, 2017, the letter will be available through Change.org.  The letter and signatures will be sent to the White House in January 2017. The mission of Project Thank You President Obama is twofold the first objective is to provide a platform to thank the President for the transformative work he has done for our nation.  The second is to create a landscape for his legacy to live on. The project is being spearheaded by former educator, Dr. Flora Miller. She has been on the front lines of civil rights sit-ins, she is a retired professor from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and developing the youth of her communities has always been her passion. Dr. Miller reached out to a group of socially active and aware women that share her passion for the community to form the Project Thank You President Obama campaign.  Aurelia Lyles, Raychelle LeBlanc and Kim A. Williams Esq., came to the realization that the Obama Administration would soon be departing the White House and wanted to share the opportunity to say Thank You to his family and his administration. They are also launching an annual honorary award to an organization or individual that has uniquely contributed to the advancement of bridging communities and cultures within the United States of America.  The award is called the “Architects of a Culture.”  Other opportunities to support the campaign, as outlined on http://www.projectthankyoupresidentobama.com are the up and coming Architects of a Culture Awards and the sales of President Barack Obama T-Shirts to support the President’s Non-Profit organization.
