Welcome to the latest episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast. Straight off the bat, I need to say that this interview with Beast director Tyler Atkins is one of my favourites ever. I always appreciate openness and honesty from my guests, and Tyler delivers it in spades here. It's one of the most real and raw insights into the difficult world of filmmaking that I've ever recorded. If you're an emerging filmmaker looking to make your mark, take in what Tyler is saying here. It's no walk in the park and takes a bucket load of dedication. Tyler made his feature debut with Bosch & Rockit in 2024, which he wrote, directed, and produced. The film premiered internationally, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Mammoth Film Festival, and marked the beginning of his work in feature filmmaking. For a film as good as his latest, Beast, you may find it interesting to learn that Tyler didn't complete his early schooling, and he certainly didn't attend film school. Beast follows MMA legend Patton James, played by Daniel MacPherson. Now a commercial fisherman, Patton is pulled back into the cage when his brother is in danger. Reuniting with his old coach Sammy (Russell Crowe), he commits to one final fight in ONE Championship against its brutal champion. Anyway… enjoy.
Actor Daniel MacPherson joins us to discuss his intense new movie, Beast. Daniel opens up about the brutal physical training required to keep up with Russell Crowe, what it was like having Amy Shark on set, and whether he’s maintained that "Beast" physique now that the cameras have stopped rolling.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There's been more than a few movies surrounding a character down on their luck trying to punch, kick, jab, grapple, or all of the above, their way to success or back to success. Think “Rocky”, “Million Dollar Baby”, “Warrior”, etc. In 2026 we get a new entry into that movie genre, “Beast”, that revolves around MMA fighting. Oscar winner Russell Crowe plays Sammy, a MMA trainer and Daniel McPherson plays Patton James, a former MMA champion, who Sammy once trained. Patton had it all right in front of him after becoming champion and in one instant he threw it all away. Now years later, retired as a fighter and nearly broke, Patton's younger brother is trying to be a MMA champion and is brutalized in a fight by another fighter, Xavier Grau, who Patton knocked out years ago. This draws Patton, and his wife and daughter, into a web of danger with Xavier, Xavier's promoter and some local thugs. Will Patton be able to fight his way out of this one? Will Sammy help him after Patton betrayed him? Is it worth going to the theater to find out? Watch this episode of Movies Merica to find out! “Beast” also stars Luke Hemsworth, Bren Foster, Kelly Gale, Mojean Aria, George Burgess, Nathan Phillips, Sol Nc Carrico, Saphira Moran and Amy Shark. Macbeth is one of William Shakespeare's most popular plays, so why would anyone write a new version? Zinnie Harris is the writer of Macbeth (An Undoing), which is coming to the Malthouse Theatre. It fleshes out the story of one of the theatre's most notorious villains: Lady Macbeth. Also, The Woman in Black is a chilling ghost story that takes us to a lonely house beyond the marshes, where, as night falls, tormented spirits rise to their eternal purpose: to take revenge on the living. It's the second-longest-running play on London's West End and is now touring Australia with John Waters and Daniel MacPherson in the cast.

After 37 years, 63 weddings, 20 births, 68 deaths, nearly 9000 episodes and one very bizarre dog dream sequence, iconic Australian soap opera Neighbours comes to an end tonight. It made stars of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie, Daniel MacPherson and Toadie Rebecchi's mullet. And it launched the pop careers of Delta Goodrem, Natalie Imbruglia, and at for at least one magnificent single, Holly Valance. But more importantly it turned the camera back on ourselves and made Australian suburban life fascinating in a way shows like EastEnders and Coronation Street had in the UK. It also did more for Australian tourism and immigration than Lara Bingle could ever have dreamed of. And now the show and its stars take their final bows, as Neighbours enters the history books. Today on Please Explain, senior culture writer Karl Quinn joins Nathanael Cooper to discuss the final episode and what the show's legacy will be. Some people discovered a love for running in lockdown, others found it in recent years but the guest on this week’s RunPod has been loving running as long as he can remember. In fact growing up, his dream was to be a triathlete.... Well, Daniel MacPherson is indeed a pretty nifty triathlete and runner but he’s also very well known as an actor. In the UK, he’s most recently been on our screens in ‘Strike Back’ but first grabbed our attention when he bagged his debut acting role in Neighbours. Ever since, he’s carved a hugely successful, international career alongside maintaining incredible fitness and has also added being a dad to the mix. He’s a busy boy but he made time to talk to Jenni and join the RunPod Run Club....whilst locked in quarantine in a hotel in Sydney!! So in this episode, they chat coping with 2 weeks isolated in a hotel room without getting out for fresh air and exercise. Why running is so much more than smashing PBs and the 3 words you need to repeat over and over on the days you’re struggling for motivation. A great listen that will inspire you to just get out there. Enjoy.

Infini is a 2015 Australian science fiction film directed by Shane Abbess and starring Daniel MacPherson, Grace Huang, and Luke Hemsworth.
Dan is one of Australia's leading actors and television presenters, with a career spanning over 22 years. Strike Back, Neighbours, The Bill, Infini, Dancing with the Stars, Wild Boys and City Homicide are just some of the shows you would may have seen him on. He has travelled the globe for his craft, pushed the boundaries and been on the hunt for growth. He poignantly states: "I now view collaboration as king and must remain king. He poignantly states: “I now view collaboration as king and must remain king. Where ego will isolate, spirit will collaborate.”For someone whose lived out of suitcase since a 17 year old, he shares how Covid-19 has allowed him to be in the one spot, using this pause to be present. This week Bram Connolly talks to actor, ironman triathlete and all-round good bloke Daniel Macpherson. Fresh from starring as Sergeant Samuel Wyatt in the acclaimed international HBO/SKY action series Strike Back, Dan describes the stress of living far away from home, out of a suitcase, and fully immersed in demanding roles months at a time. If you've ever served in the Defence Force this would not sound that unfamiliar to you. In fact, the similarities don't stop there; Dan gives us an understanding of how actors become exhausted in their trade.Dan describes how triathlon was a source of strength and grounding. When all the other events in his life would be uncertain, he had the weekly grind of run, swim or bike training to fall back on. Then, in the middle of the marathon of the Roth Ironman, he had the realisation that he had to finally choose between giving himself completely to the sport he loves or to the career he wanted. We then get an amazing insight from one of Australia's most highly regarded leading actors. “Nail everything that's in your control, because by controlling the controllable and managing the variables you have the best chance of success.”With this as the backdrop, we discuss intelligence, hard work and commitment and the relationship between these and the distinct benefits of rounding out all three. We talk about leadership in the world of television and the arts and Dan shares the discovery that an actor's expectations of themselves and others can often suppress the magic of creativity. I think you'll agree with me that this one is so good.Image - thanks to Cinemax/SkyIntro Music - thanks to Sam James @imsamjameswww.podcast.warrioru.com.au See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Every now and then I have a podcast guest on my show where the conversation just flows and this Los Angeles podcast with hardworking, talented & award-winning Australian actor, Dan MacPherson is one of those. Born in beachside suburb of Cronulla, just south of Sydney CBD, Dan MacPherson was originally spotted by his agent whilst at a triathlon in southern Sydney and was soon placed in a role on long-running Australia soapie, Neighbours. Since that time he’s gone on to a number of different acting and presenting roles in Australia, the United Kingdom and America including the musical theatre in London, British police drama series ‘The Bill’ (which I grew up watching in my parent’s household) and most recently ‘The Shannara Chronicles’, a brand new MTV TV series based on the best-selling fantasy novels by Terry Brooks. In today’s podcast, we enjoy vast and fascinating, ranging chats at length about the significance of Australia Day or “Invasion Day” as it’s known by some people, the beauties of life in Los Angeles and California, what ANZAC Day means to both Dan and myself as the grandsons of ANZACs who fought in the 2nd World War (ANZAC Day is also his birthday), Australia’s need to evolve as a country and a culture to make it a place that’s welcome for people of all backgrounds, nationalities, cultures & gender/sexual identities, career discipline, the hunger for personal & professional growth and what it takes to take a leap of faith to start from scratch in another country in what has already been a highly successful acting career and the excitement of working on MTV’s 'The Shannara Chronicles’. Infini is a sci fi film shot in a warehouse in Sydney. It stars Daniel MacPherson and is Directed by Shane Abbess. The film is available to purchase or rent in iTunes. Louisa Mignone (RAKE, EAST WEST 101) was kinda skeptical at first when she was told about the immersive process director Shane Abbess wanted to use on set during the INFINI shoot. But the how else do you gain the understanding necessary to play a lieutenant in a rescue mission to a outlying space station in the 23rd century? She shares stories about the bond between the amazing cast (including Daniel MacPherson, Luke Ford, Grace Huang and Luke Hemsworth), the highest of high stakes (Save The World!) and the ingenious design team. And it seems the film has found it’s audience - number one on iTunes in OZ and the dubious honor of being the favorite of pirates - ARGH!!!! Anyhoo, that's given Louisa an idea for a followup film...

Some people are artists. Others are athletes. It's the rare individual who can excel at both.As I kid, I was interested in sport and things creative. But for some reason, I came to the conclusion that you just can't do it all. I had to pick and never the ‘twain shall meet. Call it a left brain, right brain thing. Most of us lean in one direction. We're either logical and calculated by nature, or we're whimsical dreamers. We settle on a side and call it a day. But what if we really could excel at both?My Australian mate Daniel MacPherson is great example of someone who seamlessly traverses back and forth between seemingly unrelated worlds, tightrope walking both hemispheres of the mysterious cranium with facile grace and ease. Not only is he a tremendously talented and gifted athlete – a guy who has competed at the highest levels in triathlon, he is also a quite gifted artist – as an actor, television host and media personality. Not to mention an exceptionally successful and celebrated one at that. It's by no means a stretch to call Dan the Ryan Secrest of Australia — and I mean that in the most complimentary, non-perjorative sense. Brimming with good looks, endless charm, intelligence, athletic prowess and creativity to boot, quite simply put it's hard to imagine there is anything Dan can't do, and do well.Dan has qualified for and raced the Ironman World Championships, the Half Ironman 70.3 World Championships, and began his triathlon career at the storied Cronulla Triathlon Club in the suburbs of Sydney, training amidst the sport's greatest athletes – world champions like Craig Alexander & Chris McCormack (my guest on RRP episode 24 ). This is the same club that produced triathlon legends Greg Welch and Michellie Jones – the biggest names in the more formative years of triathlon. As a youth, Dan was intent on becoming the best triathlete he could be. Then something totally out of the blue happened. At the conclusion of a local race, he was “discovered.”The rest is history.Best known for his role on Australia’s long running series Neighbours, Dan starred in City Homicide , the British police drama The Bill and was the host of Australia’s X-Factor. He is the currently co-host of Australia's wildly popular Dancing with the Stars and is starring in a soon to be released independent sci-fi drama called Infini (trailer below). But despite Dan's blinding good looks and impeccable fitness, what is amazing is that it wasn't always this way. You might be surprised to learn that Dan was actually a chubby and somewhat insecure young bloke. A kid who, at a young age, embraced fitness and healthy lifestyle to transcend his situation and ...
