On this weeks epsiode of One For The Road i am joined by Will Gordon and below he shares his story.Hey there, I'm Will, I grew up in the suburbs of Boston, youngest of four brothers in a pretty normal family. We were all athletic and fiercely competitive, which shaped a lot of who I am today. But beneath that seemingly perfect exterior, I was fighting a battle that started way too early. At just 14, I found myself grappling with crippling anxiety and an overwhelming desire to fit in. That's when I first turned to alcohol. It became my crutch, my liquid courage that allowed me to express the person I wanted to be without the overthinking that came with being sober. Little did I know, this "solution" would nearly cost me everything. As the years went by, my drinking got worse and worse. I lost all my close friends, my job, and my life was spiraling out of control. It all came to a head when doctors gave me the ultimate wake-up call: I had just two weeks left to live.In what I can only describe as a miracle, I received a life-saving liver and kidney transplant. Followed by what felt like endless medical complications. When I woke up, I made a solemn vow to my wife and myself – alcohol would never again control my life. But here's the thing: just because my body got fixed doesn't mean my brain and soul were magically healed. The pull to drink is all-encompassing, and staying sober is a daily practice. That's why I've dedicated my life to sharing my story and helping others avoid the same pitfalls. Now that you've seen my episode, I enthusiastically encourage you to follow my brand new YouTube channel "TheWillpowerPodcast," I'm opening up about my ongoing journey. I share the mindfulness routines, healthy habits, and goal-setting strategies that help me maintain my sobriety every single day. Almost 30 years ago, a fed-up Manhattan-family-court judge named Judith Sheindlin was sitting in her chambers when she got a call from a couple of television producers. They pitched her the idea for a TV show with Judy at its center. The result was Judge Judy, one of the most popular and influential television series ever made. Over its decades-long run, it beat out The Oprah Winfrey Show in ratings, led to the explosion of court TV, and influenced how large swaths of Americans think about crime and justice. The Experiment's Peter Bresnan has been watching Judge Judy with his mom ever since he was a kid. But recently, he began to wonder how the show managed to become such a force in American culture, and what impact it's had on the thousands of litigants who stood before Judy's TV bench. What he found was a strange story about what happens when the line between law and entertainment starts to blur. A transcript of this episode will soon be made available. Please check back. From the time she was a little girl, Marilyn Vann knew she was Black and she was Cherokee. But when she applied for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation as an adult, she was denied. What followed was a journey into a dark part of Cherokee history that not many people know about and even fewer understand: Vann and her family are descended from people who were enslaved by the Cherokee Nation. They were freed after the Civil War, but that wasn't the end of their struggle. In 1866, the Cherokee Nation made a promise—a promise of citizenship for these “freedmen” and their descendants. But in the years that followed, that promise would be at the center of a battle between civil rights and sovereignty. Related Viewing: Will Congress Fulfill a 184-Year-Old Promise? Who are the people who make modern-day SPAM possible? You can find clues on the streets of downtown Austin, Minnesota. On weekend nights, across the street from the SPAM Museum, a Latin dance club fills with Spanish-speaking patrons. A taco truck is parked outside the Austin Labor Center. There's a Sudanese market and an Asian food store. A new generation of workers has flooded the town for the chance to package some of America's most iconic meat, and for many the town is a model of the American dream. But soon a mysterious disease spreads through the slaughterhouse where SPAM is made, complicating this idyllic picture of new immigrants in the American heartland. This week, The Experiment takes a look at the charge that sent Anissa Jordan to prison for a crime she didn't even know had been committed. We consider how the felony-murder rule disproportionately punishes youth of color and women, and the debate over whether the same rule is key to holding police officers responsible in the killings of civilians. Hollywood has a long history of “passing movies”—films in which Black characters pass for white—usually starring white actors. Even as these films have attempted to depict the devastating effect of racism in America, they have trafficked in tired tropes about Blackness. But a new movie from actor-writer-director Rebecca Hall takes the problematic conventions of this uniquely American genre and turns them on their head. Hall tells the story of how her movie came to life, and how making the film helped her grapple with her own family's secrets around race and identity. One night in the spring of 2005, Anissa Jordan was sitting in a car in San Francisco while her boyfriend attempted to rob a young man nearby. Shortly after, police arrested both Anissa and her boyfriend. Anissa was detained and dressed in an orange jumpsuit before she learned that the young man had been shot and killed that night and that she and her boyfriend would both be held responsible. The charge: felony murder. The felony-murder rule, which exists in more than 40 states, allows prosecutors to charge accomplices to certain crimes, such as conspiracy to commit robbery, with murder, even if they didn’t intend to kill—and even if they weren’t present for the murder. It does so by removing intent to kill from the calculus of what makes a murderer. Critics say the rule has disproportionately led to the incarceration of youth of color and women, such as Anissa, but some prosecutors say the felony-murder rule is the key to holding police officers responsible in the killings of civilians. “By propping up this terrible rule, however we do it, we have to understand this rule is primarily used against Black people and people of color,” says Kate Chatfield, a director at the Justice Collaborative. This week on The Experiment, a look at the doctrine that prosecutors used to convict Anissa for a crime she didn’t even witness, and a debate over whether that same rule is crucial to prosecuting the highest-profile case in the country, The State of Minnesota v. Derek Chauvin. Further reading: “What Makes a Murderer?” Be part of The Experiment. Use the hashtag #TheExperimentPodcast, or write to us at theexperiment@theatlantic.com. In 1902, a Swedish American pastor named Henning Jacobson refused to get the smallpox vaccine. This launched a chain of events that landed the Massachusetts pastor in a landmark 1905 Supreme Court case in which the Court considered the delicate balancing act between individual liberty over our bodies and our duty to one another. "We can be grateful for his work here [while] at the same time also saying the dude was terribly mistaken about this one thing for which, unfortunately, he's most famous now,” says Pastor Robin Lutjohann, who today leads the church that Jacobson founded, originally a haven for Swedish immigrants. The Jacobson v. Massachusetts decision made clear that the government could mandate vaccination, arguing that collective good sometimes outweighs individual rights. But the line between the two is blurry. More than two decades after Jacobson’s case, the Court used the same logic in another decision, one the historian Michael Willrich says is among the “scariest U.S. Supreme Court decisions of all time.” Be part of The Experiment. Nineteen sixty-four. Freedom Summer. Marylin Thurman Newkirk was born in Greenwood, Mississippi, in a county where just about 250 Black adults out of more than 13,000 were registered to vote. She would grow up as part of the first generation of Americans who lived in a true democracy, according to her son Vann R. Newkirk II. That has a lot to do with a law enacted a year after her birth, in 1965. That’s when Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, which ended Jim Crow laws preventing Black people from voting in many states. But the protections enacted in 1965 didn’t last, and today they’re hanging by a thread. Now, in the aftermath of his mother’s death at 56, Newkirk argues that the best way to ensure that democracy lasts is a constitutional amendment. This Monday episode begins with some initial reactions to DJ’s win at the Travelers, but is promptly interrupted by some breaking news about the broadcast partner for the U.S. Open. Andy and Brendan offer some initial thoughts on that shocking change that it seems almost no one knew was coming. Will Gordon’s work on a sponsor’s exemption is discussed as is Bryson’s consistency in an attempt to become “the house.” Phil’s weekend fade and his trademark maneuverings are panned, mostly. News offers a Ryder Cup mini-scoop, some discussion on the evolving Tour Covid protocols, and the U.S. Open’s exemptions plan with qualifying canceled. They wrap with a debrief on the Korn Ferry Tour finish in Utah, celebrating Kyle Jones and pondering whether Daniel Summerhays will truly call it quits now.

Keep Your Marketing Simple - Four steps for better videos to improve your marketing The goal of this video is to give you simple tips for how to shoot videos at home in a way that looks professional and is engaging. 1. Video Lighting - Face a natural light source What that means is just face a window, so you get lots of light coming in and lights up your face so that we can see you. If you don't do this, and if you put the window in the background which we see quite often, you end up becoming very dark looking like a silhouette. If you are dark we can't actually see your face and people really connect with your face. So face a natural light source, simply face a window. 2. Video Background - Think about what is behind you So you wanna remove a lot of the distractions and keep everything as simple as possible so that it looks nice. Now, as a rule of thumb, a boring background means a boring video, or a tacky background means a tacky video. So what you wanna do is you wanna make it look as good as you can. Now if you need advice for making the background of your video better, leave a comment below and we can give you some advice there. I can even bring in some other people who give me advice about how to do this setup, for example Will Gordon, who's an amazing photographer, I'm sure he'll be happy to leave a few comments below as well. 3. Video audio - Improve your audio with a microphone Now given what's happening with the coronavirus, that might not be easy to order a new microphone or something like that. I can leave a link below for the audio microphone that I use, which is really good, I've used it for years, lasts a long time, it's about $100, and it's really really good quality, but there's a tonne of really good quality microphones that you can use. I strongly recommend that you use a microphone, not just use the internal microphone of a phone or of a computer. This will make a big difference to your video. Recommended Microphone - RØDE SMARTLAVPRode SmartLav+ Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone for Smartphones 4. Video delivery - Structure your talk Now this is actually the most important one. Even if you get all of the others wrong, if you do this right, you can deliver really good information. In terms of structuring your talk, what you need to do is Step one: Hook Start with a really good hook, which is you ask a good question, Step two: Desire Talk about the desire, which is what people want to achieve. Step three: Problem Discuss the problem, which is what is stopping them from achieving what they want to achieve. Step four: Solution Discuss the solution, which is what's going to solve their problem. Step five: Application Talk about how you apply the solution so that they get an understanding of how the product or service actually solves their problem, Step six: Call to Action The last one is how they can buy it from you. So if you do all of these things that I'm discussing right now and apply it to your videos, I guarantee, you'll end up with a better video.
