Adam Gust was raised in the cold of Minnesota, studied music in the heat of the University of North Texas, and has enjoyed a diverse freelance musical career of world touring and session work and teaching in just-right Los Angeles since 2000. After a humbling decade of recovery from a career-threatening injury, Adam acquired a unique expertise, empathy, and voice that inform his lessons and masterclasses.  Adam's journey of relearning how to practice has helped him to stumble upon highly effective student based progressive learning strategies. Adam is excited to share his story of evolution from the 'back of beyond' as he explains how he implements technology and new academic ideas while re-assessing traditional forms of drum instruction. "You will only get as good as you feel"- Adam Gust Especially for drummers, technique is about feeling music. It is a measure of how well your mind and body allow your heart to project out through the drums. Therefore, a student's focus is on sensation, posture, symmetrical rhythmic movement, and balance. Employing these systematic mindful practices nurtures our joy of playing and promotes our improvement as musicians and as humans.   Some Things That Came Up:    -1:30 Adam and Rich attended The University of North Texas  -5:00 Adam, Rich and Luke Adams played in the Dallas band Random Axis -5:30 Adam moved to LA in 2000 -6:30 The Red Elvis' was Adam's first touring gig, which he kept for 8 years. Dave believes that musicians should approach their craft with the mindset of athletes, and he's created this new course because he sees a significant need for it in the community. Until now, such a resource simply didn't exist. As of this recording, the course is available for pre-order, with the official launch set for March 4th, 2024. For those listening in the future, head over to daveelitch.com or sooyow.com (which stands for Staying Out Of Your Own Way) to grab your copy. To keep things engaging, I've asked Dave to put together a top 5 list, and he's chosen "Top 5 Things You're Not Doing That Are Hurting You and Your Drumming." So, grab your notepads, folks, because it's time to learn. And a big thank you to Dave for joining us today! Always a pleasure to have you. This week's guest is Dave Elitch and this chat is long overdue because he's one of the most-mentioned drummers on this podcast…behind Levon Helm, of course. Dave has played with The Mars Volta, The 1975, Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake…and countless others, but a lot of drummers know him as a “teacher's teacher”. He's helped many of the best drummers (and instructors) fine tune their own playing such as Jason McGerr, Benny Greb, Tomas Haake, Chris McHugh and even Bill Burr...who I would love to get on this podcast. His zen-like approach to viewing drummers as athletes and listening to the body and how it relates to one's goals makes him one of the most sough-after teachers today. His online instructional course, aptly named “Getting Out Of Your Own Way” was just updated (and we do talk about all of that in this episode), but I wanted to get to know the drummer behind the instructor. I hope you enjoy my chat with Dave about the 5 records that helped shaped the way he approaches the instrument. Cheers! As promised: https://drinklmnt.com

Not only is Tucker a rhythmic powerhouse, he's quite possibly the nicest guy in the world (sorry to ‘out' you Tucker). We had a really fun conversation that went well beyond his influences including lessons learned from working with Dave Elitch, perspectives on practicing, and how each of us deal with the frustrations, yet needed patience, of always wanted to become better players. Killer Be Killed took the music world by storm with their 2014 self-titled debut.Featuring the cream of metal in Max Cavalera, Greg Puciato, Troy Sanders and Dave Elitch, the band was an instant success, unfortunately touring minimally because of the commitments each member had to their respective bands.Whispers of hope have been circulating almost weekly since, with each perceived hint at new music generally failing to come to fruition. Then, as if out of nowhere, Killer Be Killed dropped the single "Deconstructing Self-Destruction" and the juggernaut that had slowly ground to a halt suddenly gained momentum with the announcement not long after that the band would be releasing their much anticipated second album Reluctant Hero on November 20."It's something that we've been working on scattered over bits and pieces of time for the last five years," Sanders revealed, "which really started... our one and only album came out in 2014 and in 2015 we did our first and only tour on the Soundwave tour across Australia and when we left Australia we all said to one another we will continue, we're gonna do another record, and we will continue to tour. It's not a matter of IF, just a matter of WHEN, so it's taken six years since our first album but we all share the same dedication and perseverance to make it happen and now we're lucky enough to be here talking about it. I'm very, very proud of my bandmates."While often separated by large distances due to vastly different schedules, Killer Be Killed slowly assembled fresh material for another album, preferring to allow new music to grow at its own volition rather than force anything out."We always wrote everything together in the same room as one another in these bits and pieces over the last five years," he said, "so that had to remain intact because that's the best kind of energy and collaboration that we could share. We just wanted to make sure that we were having fun and every one of us enjoyed the riffs, all the song structures, all the vocal patterns, all the song titles - just everything. We wanted to be super proud of it, that was the whole point of putting this band together in the first place is that we wanted to have the same feeling as when we formed out very first band as teenagers. We wanted to jam with friends that we enjoyed being with, writing music that makes us feel good, keeping the simplicity very much intact. It maintained that the whole time and I'm glad that all four of us are still interested in doing this band because I've said before that none of us really NEED this band but all of us really, really WANT this band so that's kind of special right there in itself."Despite continued questioning of each band member that seemingly intensified with each passing year, Killer Be Killed elected not to disclose or give updated statements on the new album, not wanting to raise their fans hopes and/or expectations."That was actually a decision that I brought to the guys several years ago," he nodded. "I knew this was gonna take us a long time to piece together because we are so busy with our other bands that we're in. Although I am not on social media I know that everyone else is so I said what do you guys think of the idea of not saying that we're working on stuff because I feared that the handful of people that really cared about it and would get excited were the people that were excited when we got together years ago and wrote these songs and that sometimes it would take over a year to write more stuff and over time people would say are you still doing that? Is it still happening? And it would be drawn out and i felt it wasn't important to get anyone excited about small bits of productivity that we were doing so I said why don't we not mention it to anybody until we have a full album. The whole point was to do it in one deal and come out with the announcement and say here it is to have that impact and those guys agreed with me and we kept it secret - not that it was a huge deal - but we just didn't want people that cared about it to get the feeling that they don't belong."In the full interview, Sanders talks more about the album, details the title track "Reluctant Hero", discusses their Australian tour and how it gave the band hope for the future, working alongside some of the best musicians in metal, discusses each member and what they bring to the band and more.

Dave Elitch has the rare ability to deconstruct the craft of drumming on a granular level. This gift has led to a diversity gigs ranging from The Mars Volta to Justin Timberlake. Dave's primary passion, though, is for teaching. At age 34, he's taught a who's-who of professional drummers, some of whom are twice Dave's age and icons in their own right. Dave tells Joe about how he fell in love with drumming; his teaching style; his love of visual art; and the parallels between therapy and drum instruction.

Eventually that can take a toll, so I kind of hit a wall and needed a break. I’ve always had an appreciation for art, and luckily where I live in LA there are all these rad galleries – the Getty, the Hammer, Thinkspace, C.A.V.E., Giant Robot – so I frequent those. I get a different vantage point on the creative experience.
