 Like most humans, I am a creature of comfort. I love to be in an environment that is familiar and secure. My backyard. On the couch watching a good show with my wife snuggled in at my side. Laughing at my grandkids as they run around willy-nilly laughing at each other and playing. I take great comfort and joy in good, savory snacks, and sweet deserts. I'm guessing almost everyone can relate to this. We all have those places in our lives that we prefer, and things we have peace in. Why would anyone go out looking for trouble? Like those nutty folks who like to jump out of perfectly good airplanes, and then hang by a few strings as they float to the ground. Or the weirdos who enjoy dangling from sheer rock cliffs. Or the ones who choose to run an Iron Man race – 2 ½-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, followed by a 26.2-mile run – that's not comfortable. And there are some who willing choose to stand in front of large groups of people and speak – some would, quite literally, rather die, than do that. Or how about devoting hour upon hour – days and even weeks – solving a math problem. I have an obsession with flags. Todd flies them occasionally. Lots of people do. I don’t happen to, but that’s an aesthetic choice. The problem for me (as I’ve said a thousand times) is that flags are like bumper stickers for your home. People increasingly treat them that way as well, which is bonkers. At the bottom of it, though, what’s worth thinking about is the lack of thought people seem to put into flying a flag. I wonder what would change about it if we had to flay flags on the houses we looked at rather than the houses we lived in. In addition to the comical flag that adorns this episode, flags tend to fall into two categories. The first says “I like flags.” These are the homes with seasonal flags, comical or not. The other, which includes American flags, pride flags, blue line flags, and Confederate flags, says, “If you only know one thing about the person living in this house, it’s this.”I’ve gotta be clear, I don’t think that’s what people believe; I just think they don’t consider it from that perspective. Todd lured a tree guy to his house and the neighbors never let him leave. It’s astounding how much more confident we feel hiring someone when we see them working. There’s a reality to it. Even if they’re doing something we don’t understand, seeing someone who appears to know what they’re doing is so much better than looking at Google Reviews and such. We don’t spend too much time on the show taking about it, so don’t worry, this isn’t Tree Talk with Todd and Tony (yet) although we do kick the idea around.Todd has a construction background as well as a vibe that comes along with it. I have no such thing, as evidenced by the questions I asked about tree-cutting equipment. You’d be surprised how rarely tree guys use axes and wear flannel. I briefly pitch a This Old House-style show wherein I just walk around behind Todd asking questions that reveal my ignorance and making guesses that cause more sophisticated people to snicker. But the big news this week is my upcoming book. Still.Dragged Into the Light: Truthers, Reptilians, Super Soldiers, and Death Inside an Online Cult will ship in the next couple days and I’m so excited for you to read it. Todd and I spoke about an early review from Tehben.com that really got to the heart of the book. I also was on the “Follow The Woo” podcast. I’d really like it if you at least listened to the opening of that. The host, who is so much more spiritual than I will ever be, had some great insights. If I’m honest, my Dragged Into the Light isn’t friendly or forgiving when it comes to religion and spirituality, but that has more to do with the practices I witnessed. We spoke a lot about how if faith makes you mean, you’re probably doing it wrong. Police in the Western Cape are investigating the murder of a 37-year-old woman from the small town of Ashton in the Boland. The woman's body was discovered in her shack. She had been stabbed to death. The incident follows only days after the body of 16-year-old Berodine Boyce, was found in Laingville at St Helena Bay, after she was reported missing. Berenice Moss reports.
