Sam Gold has directed five Shakespeare tragedies, but his latest, “Romeo + Juliet,” is something different—a loud, clubby production designed to attract audiences the age of its protagonists. “It's as if the teens from ‘Euphoria' decided that they had to do Shakespeare,” Vinson Cunningham said, “and this is what they came up with.” The production stars Rachel Zegler, who starred in Steven Spielberg's remake of “West Side Story,” and Kit Connor, of the Gen Z Netflix hit “Heartstopper,” and features music by Jack Antonoff. Gold, who cut his teeth doing experimental theatre with the venerable downtown company the Wooster Group, bristles at the view that his production is unfaithful to the original. “A lot of people falsely sort of label me as a deconstructionist or something, because they're wearing street clothes,” he tells Cunningham. “I'm not deconstructing these plays. I'm doing the play. . . . I think it's a gross misunderstanding of the difference between conventions and authentic engagement in a text.” Gold aspires to excite kids to get off their phones. “We are in a mental-health crisis [of] teen suicide. I'm doing a play about teen suicide, and all those young people are coming. And I think we can help them.”

Career Q&A with Keegan-Michael Key, moderated by BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge of "Backstage with Richard Ridge!" Emmy and Peabody award winning actor, writer, and creator Keegan-Michael Key has made a name for himself as one of the most creative and in-demand faces in Hollywood. With his extraordinarily diverse skill set and wide-ranging talent in both comedy and drama, Key redefines what it means to be a chameleon and multi-hyphenate in the worlds of film, television, and theater. Up next, Key will star in Shane Black's The Predator, which will hit theaters August 3, 2018. A sequel to the 1987 sci-fi hit Predator, the film also stars Sterling K. Brown, Trevante Rhodes, and Jacob Tremblay. It was also just announced that Key has joined the cast of Jon Favreau's The Lion King as the hyena Kamari. The Disney film is slated for a Summer of 2019 release. Most recently, Key made his Broadway debut in Steve Martin's play Meteor Shower, which opened on November 29th at the Booth Theatre. The production followed his New York stage debut as Horatio in Sam Gold's production of Hamlet at The Public Theater in the Summer of 2017. He can also be seen starring in Nick Stoller's comedy series “Friends from College,” currently streaming on Netflix, which follows a group of Harvard alumni and their adult successes – or lack thereof. The role garnered a 2018 NAACP award nomination for Key, and the show will return for a second season sometime this year. Key is the co-creator and co-star of Comedy Central's “Key & Peele” with Jordan Peele. The show won the 2016 Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, with Key being individually nominated for acting and co-writing with Peele. Key was previously nominated for 5 Emmy Awards for his work on the show, as well as a 2016 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. “Key & Peele” won a 2014 Peabody Award and an American Comedy Award for Best Alternative Comedy Series. The show has become a TV and viral sensation, with 15 total Emmy® nominations and approaching a billion cumulative online hits. The series concluded its five season run in September 2015. Key was named among Time Magazine's “Most Influential People of 2014” and Entertainment Weekly's “Entertainers of the Year of 2012.” He is a veteran of Detroit and Chicago's The Second City, and received his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Detroit Mercy, and his Master of Fine Arts in Theater from Pennsylvania State University.

Then, Ari discusses how this wave of law-making differs from so-called "moral panics" of past decades — and why that matters — with historian Jules Gill-Peterson, of Johns Hopkins University. Then, Broadway is back and bigger than ever, with 16 new shows opening this month. But this Broadway burst hasn't been immune to the pandemic. Hello listeners, patrons of the arts, and theatre lovers, The people who have played James Bond are more than just movie stars. They're actors! They're respected thespians! One need look no further than the most recently retired 007, Daniel Craig. His first post-Bond assignment: a modern reinterpretation of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" on Broadway, co-starring Ruth Negga. The show is directed by Sam Gold. Jason Kim was able to make it to a presentation during its first week. He attended the Wednesday March 30th show with a few members of the Bond fan community. You'll hear from Tim Guccione and his significant other Jackie Capone, as well as Boomer and Sarra Spillane. As for Jason, his keen sense of observation lent itself to a host of topics: Daniel Craig mopping the floor, a theatrical gather all, an obligatory Keri Russell reference, being in the presence of Daniel Craig's piercing blue eyes, a condensed episode of "What's Daniel wearing?", the history of Lady Macbeth performances, and cracking open a brewski after murdering a friend. So sit back and feel the rush of tension and passion that only a classic tragedy can muster. If you see witches three, run away. Fast. "Macbeth" is playing at the Longacre Theatre in New York until July 10th. Tim Guccione co-produces and co-hosts the No Time to Bond podcast.

10 years after drafting him, the Seattle Seahawks have traded Russell Wilson. The Seahawks received a great trade package for a guy who only once cost them a third round pick, but the impact of parting with the most renowned quarterback in franchise history--if not the most important player to ever suit up for Seattle--can't be understated. We will try though. I started writing about the Seahawks at Field Gulls in the middle of 2011. Russell Wilson joined in 2012. He started every game for the Seahawks for almost a decade. Playoffs. Super Bowls. I've written more words about Wilson than I've dedicated to any other person in history. Now it's time to set him free and look to a new future. To do that, I gave an instant reaction to the trade news and shared in it with Sam Gold. You know him from Field Gulls, from YouTube, and from Twitter @SamuelRGold. If you don't know him, now you do. The production is to be directed by Sam Gold, who also directed the off-Broadway “Othello” in which Craig appeared, and who in 2019 directed a Broadway revival of “King Lear.” The production will feature original music by Gaelynn Lea. There have been 47 previous Broadway productions of “Macbeth,” according to the Internet Broadway Database; the most recent was in 2013, starring Ethan Hawke and Anne-Marie Duff. 根據網路百老匯資料庫,「馬克白」曾在百老匯上演47次,最近一次是2013年,由伊森.霍克和安-瑪麗.達芙主演。Source article: https://udn.com/news/story/6904/5804162

As movie theaters across the country are about to go through another metamorphosis point after having been largely empty this last year, now seems as good a time as any to revisit the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama about three workers at a single-screen movie theater in New England. On this episode I'm joined by journalist and former guest, Tyler Coates, and actor Eric Gilde, to talk about:- the play;- Baker's career;- her collaboration with director Sam Gold;- and her creative usages of prosceniums, pauses, and Georges Delurue music. Also:How the French New Wave and her Criterion top 10 list informs the play;- her only produced film/television work on one episode of Amazon's I Love Dick;- speculation about what a film she writes and directs might be like;- and how much the play nails about working in a movie theater during the film to digital transition.Tyler Coates is currently writing for the Hollywood Reporter, while past work has appeared in The Awl, Brooklyn Magazine, Esquire, GOOD, Gothamist, Nylon, Out, Town & Country, and the Village Voice. He interviewed Baker in 2013 about The Flick for BlackBook Magazine and also reviewed her play John for Slate.Eric Gilde is a New York-based actor, playwright, and podcaster. As the sun settles over the whispering pines of Elizaville, NY a new summer is set to begin at Camp Scatico. My guest today is one of the most fiery and inspirational characters I have ever come across who went to camp. He was making a name for himself long before I got there learning to be a leader under the tutelage of Oshatz and Johny Deutsch. This manifested in music appreciation, u13 championships, unsportsmanlike conduct, girls side, Friday night sermons and setting a tone for younger more impressionable campers. He was my counselor during "The Fish Years" heading up to Lake George or SPAC on an off day and playing General for the Grey in 1988 as this host hit half hook after half hook over AJ Hoffman in a pre-lunch B-Hoops Day 4 color war matchup. The reason my guest is inspirational is because in the summer of 2000 the red Qualye 2k Jeep drove through the gates of Scatico. After years as a camper and counselor, Ringing the bell at Hobart, Countless benders @ The Seagrape my guest decided to buck the trend, not give in to skeptics and come back to wave that flag wide and high for cats like myself and Cory Schwartz and the Rabbinical Sam Safrin. He came with an unabashed curiosity and live Tom Petty/Dylan albums cranking after a return trip from the Rhinecliff Hotel and a long walk up the Deli Trail. He is part of the lineage that exists from Nat Holman to Bert Holman from Randy Goldstein to Sam Gold. He and his sister Pam spent multiple summers sporting the green and white. He has contributed to our society 5 children of his own. Maybe someday they will grace the ballfields with their presence to continue the family tradition that makes Scatico what it is. He is now a senior partner @ Crossroads Strategies and has been a prolific policy advocate for a host of American based industries including Expedia, Koch Industries Public Sector, Citizens for responsible energy solutions and The I-69 Mid-Continent Highway Coalition. Matt takes us on a deep dive into the showbiz industry. What it's like to go on an audition, to win the room, be kind, and being prepare for, not only the moment, but for the role you are auditioning. If you are thinking about going into theater, then Matt is here to shed light on what you will have to endure and overcome to make it in the business. Also, Matt hones in how preparation has led into bigger roles throughout his career. Another key component is treating everyone with kindness. You never know who and when you will run into the person that can take your career to the next level. Originally from Boston Massachusetts, Matt grew up on show-tunes and Boston sports. Matt studied theater at both University of Southern Maine and The Boston Conservatory before heading down Rte 95 to NYC in 2004. In June of 2009 Matt got the call to make his Broadway debut in the TONY winning production of HAIR with TONY winner Diane Paulus at the helm. Matt continued with that production “Across the Atlantic Sea” to The West End in the role of “Woof” and then launched the 1st National US Tour of HAIR and was seen back on Broadway in the “Summer of Love” revival of HAIR. Following his time with the hippies, Matt launched the 1st National tour of Green Day’s AMERICAN IDIOT as the “Representative from Jingletown”. Matt’s cross country adventures continued in 2014 with the 1st National Tour of ONCE, where he played “Svec” and 5 instruments. Collectively over the last 5 years Matt is a veteran of almost 2000 performances. Thankfully Matt returned home to Broadway (again with Diane Paulus) in the hit musical WAITRESS, where he has starred opposite TONY winner Jessie Mueller, 2 time Grammy winner Jason Mraz, and 7 time Grammy nominee, and the shows composer, Sara Bareilles. He then toured the country with the WAITRESS National Tour as Earl opposite his real life wife, Christine Dwyer, as Jenna. Upon returning from the road Matt was a part of developing the World Premiere of The Secret Life of Bees at The Atlantic Theater Company, directed by TONY winner Sam Gold. Most recent regional credits include: playing Guy in ONCE at Bucks County Playhouse and the upcoming World Premiere of Pure Country at TUTS, starring opposite TONY winner Levi Kreis. On television Matt has made many performance appearances with these multiple shows, including the Macys Thanksgiving Parade. Matt can also be seen on Person of Interest, Madam Secretary, Marvel’s Daredevil, EVIL, For Life, and Chicago PD. Matt lives with his beautiful wife and fellow performer (and Bostonian) Christine Dwyer, and their Boston Terrier “Chowdah". Matt and Christine also co-own THE WORKING STUDIO, a music theatre and acting studio dedicated to unlocking peoples potential and embracing individuality in the audition process.Contact info: https://www.theworkingstudio.net/theworkingstudio@gmail.comhttps://www.upgradeyouraudition.com/--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wherethefortuneis/message

Sam Gold, the Tony-Award winning director of Fun Home, wants to eliminate all barriers between the audience and the story. To that end, he removes any element that actors might use as a crutch in their performance, like an unnecessary set piece, and he utilizes the physical theater space to bring the actors as close as possible to the audience. In many of Sam’s productions including Hamlet, Look Back in Anger, and Glass Menagerie, he creates what he calls “a theater with no stage”. Of course, there is a stage, it just blends into the audience’s physical space and therefore into their emotional experience. As he says, “I like putting actors in the architecture that is perfect for the piece we’re making.” This spring Sam will direct Three Sisters at New York Theatre Workshop starring Oscar Isaac and Greta Gerwig. Sam’s emphasis is always on the actors – and he’s worked with some of the best in the business including Laurie Metcalf, Adam Driver, and Glenda Jackson. Combining skilled actors, an architectural approach to directing, and the belief that theater is inherently up for interpretation has made Sam one of the most in-demand directors working today. Comparing areas like accuracy, arm strength, vision, pocket awareness and more, Wilson edged out Luck in the overall analysis, which seems to have a lot of Colts fans fuming. Gold does say that Colts fans who have actually watched the video all the way through believe that his analysis on Lucks strengths and weaknesses is fair however. In the video, Gold is critical of Wilson's vision on the field as well as his pocket awareness, but his elite ranking in terms of his accuracy is really what put Wilson in a strong position ahead of Luck, even before considering Luck's injury history. Though Houdyshell did not make her Great White Way debut until the age of 52, she has performed all across the country and is a New York stage stalwart. Since then, Houdyshell has earned acclaim in Broadway productions like Well, Follies, A Doll's House, Part 2 and more. In 2016, she earned a Tony Award for The Humans, and as previously reported, she'll reprise her role on the big screen in a film adaptation of the Stephen Karam play. The great Glenda Jackson is back on the stage. In 1992, the Emmy and two-time Academy Award winner was elected to Parliament. She spent the next 23 years in Britain’s House of Commons. Since returning to theater in 2015, she’s played King Lear on London’s West End and won a Tony Award for her performance in Edward Albee’s "Three Tall Women." Now, she’s playing Lear again in a new production, directed by Sam Gold, on Broadway. We were thrilled to get Glenda Jackson into the studio to talk about playing a king, opportunities for women in the arts, and the intricacies of her performance in the new production of "King Lear." The production had many interesting features and interpretations which seemed to be great entrees into several compliance topics. The play was directed by Sam Gold and it was scored by Phillip Glass but the star power was derived from Jackson as King Lear. It was a fabulous take on the story and one that will resonate directly to our turbulent times. Therefore, inspired by octogenarian Jackson and her performance, I am going to use King Lear as a deep dive into several compliance topics this week. Today, I want to use the nature of the production, to introduce the day’s topic of innovation in compliance.  Gold’s Lear production was both unique and innovative. It was quite a large stage but the lightening was used to great effect. When the director wanted to shift the action, to another group of actors or topic, the lights were simply shut off to the actors not involved. They did not have to exit the stage and then return. This allowed them to remain on stage and the action could move back and forth without disruption.  The second innovation was in the use of music. While I am generally not a fan of music in Shakespeare, unless used in the original show notes, such as bugles blaring; I am not a fan of music in the performances. However there was a classical quartet which played throughout the performance that I felt truly enhanced the entire production. Finally, I normally revolt at any singing in a Shakespearian production. There were a couple of singing scenes which almost worked for me but at least they did not detract from the overall performance. I thought about this in the context of how to move compliance innovation into the corporate pantheon of greater business process efficiency when I read a recent MIT Sloan Management Review article, entitled “Grow Faster By Changing Your Innovation Narrative”, by George S. Day and Gregory P. Shea. In the article they discussed their findings that organizations that sustain growth “faster than industry rivals articulate a coherent, compelling innovation narrative and rely on four powerful levers to make it a reality.” They posited four key levers for doing so which I believe would work well for a compliance function to sustain innovative growth within an organization and with its customer base, i.e. employees. I have adapted their piece for such an exercise.  The first lever is to invest in compliance talent.  The second lever is encouraging prudent risk taking.  The third lever is to adopt a customer centric process.  The fourth lever is aligning metrics and incentives with innovation activity. The bottom line is that senior management is well-versed in the need for innovative and effective compliance. By using these four levers, a compliance practitioner can help senior managers to focus the organizations compliance efforts. The authors conclude by stating, “A growth-affirming  innovation narrative and the four levers that make it manifest within a company can help leaders focus and prioritize their innovation efforts. The process of identifying and articulating the narrative is essential to understanding the culture of innovation within a company and envisioning what it can achieve. The levers bring that narrative to life. Without them, organic growth leadership in any industry is a hit-or-miss endeavor.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Theatre often struggles to include and embrace diverse voices and artists, and this is certainly true of artists with disabilities. However, directors and casting directors are uniquely positioned to change producing practices and the perceptions of audiences well before the lights go up, and indeed, even before the first rehearsal – and it starts with the casting breakdown. Join SDCF Foundation Director David Roberts as he sits down with director Sam Gold and casting director David Caparelliotis to discuss opportunities in collaborating with artists with disabilities. They will explore authentic representation of disabled characters by actors with disabilities, as well as the casting of those same actors in non-disabled roles, and how they as director and casting director navigate producers' expectations, critical reception, and audience response to their work with this underrepresented community of artists.

Sam Gold from Gold HR, has a refreshing approach to HR, and the importance for Business owners to get the best from the most precious asset - their staff. WHAT WE DISCUSS How to build a relationship with a new team How to build an open relationship where mistakes are openly shared and learnt form, rather than penalized How to manage a friendship after one of you has been promoted How to turn the tide when your team has turned against you How to maintain a good relationship with a team member while giving negative feedback How to bring your team with you when you move your business forward   ABOUT SAM Sam founded GoldHR in 2012. Her aim was to provide companies without their own internal HR expertise with no nonsense, business focused, expert HR advice in a truly flexible manner.  For most small businesses to employ a full time HR Manager or Director would be a complete luxury, and historically the only feasible option for businesses would be to engage with a solicitor or get tied into a contract with a call centre style advice line.   Sam felt that these businesses were missing out on having the value of an HR professional in their business, to not only advise on the ‘nitty gritty’ HR, such as disciplinaries and redundancies - but to be there as a listening ear to those sometimes tricky staffing situations.   Sam holds a Post Graduate Diploma and MSc in Human Resources Management, is a fully qualified Chartered Member of the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) and an Accredited Workplace Mediator.  She has worked in a variety of different businesses from a rapidly expanding start-up, to a senior HR Business partner at an large utilities provider.   Prior to setting up GoldHR, Sam was a consultant providing HR support to small and medium sized businesses in the London and South East region.  Sam is passionate about helping business owners, knowing first-hand the difficulties that employing staff can encounter, but also how amazing business can be when the people part is right.   Sam says "I set up GoldHR as I felt businesses were missing out on the value that HR can bring.  I have seen first-hand what can happen when the people part of a business goes wrong - this doesn‘t mean just a messy tribunal claim, but when the wrong people are employed, or when the structure of a business isn’t right - things start to fall apart.  We are currently a small, but perfectly formed team of HR professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds.  We all share in the belief that HR shouldn’t be bureaucratic, tick box function that restricts business growth. HR should be at the heart of every business, proactively working alongside business owners to make things happen."   CONTACT DETAILS / LINKS To find out how we can help you and your business visit our website at www.goldhr.co.uk or send me a connection request and let’s start a conversation.  Email: sam@goldhr.co.uk Website: Click here Phone: 07955 588922 Social Media Links: Facebook details - Click Here Twitter details - @SamGoldHR LinkedIn details - Click Here   If you have enjoyed this show then please leave a review.  How to leave an iTunes rating or review for a podcast from your iPhone or iPad Launch Apple's Podcast app. Tap the Search tab. The Seattle Seahawks have eight straight wins in their home opener in the Pete Carroll era, eight straight wins over the 49ers, and we've enduring eight straight quarters of football that has been difficult to watch in terms of the offense. While the issue seemed clear last week, it seems as though there's more to be concerned about after the latest win. But are we as down on the team this week if two players don't drop touchdown catches? Would we be as concerned if Carlos Hyde didn't break two big runs on the defense? Adam and Brandan sort through where some of the real concerns are and if this is just something that's normal for the start of a Seahawks season. Apart from the two long runs, the defense stifled the 49ers offense and held Brian Hoyer under 100 yards passing. They almost added a safety, but the refs ruled that Hoyer's "forward progress" kept him out of the end zone. Brandan talks about the "rule snobs" that come out on Twitter when you show any weakness in knowing the NFL rule book. The guys look ahead to the matchup with the Titans. They break down a term fans might hear a lot this upcoming week, "exotic smashmouth." But what does that mean to play that style of football?  While the Seahawks defense is equipped to go up against any offense, the Titans defense offers similar strengths and vulnerabilities to the Packers team they faced in Week 1. Sam Gold, founder of NFL Breakdowns and staff writer for Field Gulls, joins the show this week to talk about two big components of the Seattle offense: the zone read and the wide receiver screens. William Shakespeare shed light on humans’ hypocrisy, absurdity, and complexity with unparalleled acuity. It’s obvious why Keegan-Michael Key, who with his gifted partner-in-crime Jordan Peele, chartered new waters with their hilariously subversive sketch comedy series Key & Peele, has always felt an affinity for the bard. But it is a dream come true, one he'd spoken of for decades, for the Emmy and Peabody winning actor to be in Hamlet at The Public Theater in New York. Directed by Tony winner Sam Gold and starring Oscar Isaac as Hamlet, the three month run sold out as soon as tickets went on sale. In our Employee of the Month interview, we spoke about Keegan’s two-decade detour in comedy, his first film Hamtramck, improvising with President Barack Obama for The White House Correspondents Dinner, and how comedian Mike Birbiglia’s indie Don’t Think Twice proved the perfect segue for extending his already rich repertoire to more dramatic roles. Did I mention Keegan-Michael Key can sing? Oh, you’ll here him....
