“In order to scale effectively, we have to be completely removed from the day-to-day operations in the business.” -Patrick Rogers   A scalable business is a company that is profitable but also has the potential to become even more profitable, without the owner being directly involved in its day-to-day processes.  Creating a business model like this can be tough. But there are ways to can create a scalable business that can be successfully exited—and it doesn't have to come at the expense of our integrity.  Exit Planning Advisor and serial entrepreneur Patrick Rogers joins me this week for a powerful conversation on business building. Patrick has mentored CEO's and business leaders to achieve their goals and transform their organizations into successful entities positioned for a profitable exit.  In this episode, Patrick and I discuss the signs that a company has high growth potential, how to balance our life triangle (relationships, career, and self), the drivers that affect the value of a company, three processes that affect the scalability of a business, and critical attributes that every business owner should possess. ‘Baffling Last Chapter to Mystery Writer’s Life,’ said the LA Times. ‘Novelist’s public death creates Chicago Mystery,’ wrote the New York Times in December 1996, and Patrick Rogers for People Magazine said, ‘Eugene Izzi has created another riddle in his own death. No matter who was responsible, it was an exit scripted with a grim tabloid flourish. On Saturday morning December 7th, a man in downtown Chicago looked up to see the body of crime novelist Eugene “Guy” Izzi dangling from a noose hung out his office window 14 floors above Michigan Avenue. Within minutes, police arrived at the office to find a scene littered with tantalizing clues.’ The 6-foot-tall burly writer of hard-boiled cops and gangster stories, a native of the tough city streets of Chicago, was now dead, hanging by the neck outside his office window. A noose had been tied four times around his neck and the other end of the rope tied to a desk leg inside the office. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest, brass knuckles, and had a can of mace-like spray on his person. His pockets were stuffed with $481 in cash. On the floor of his office lay a loaded but unfired .38 caliber pistol. In his office there were a series of handwritten notes, and some computer discs. It looked like suicide, or murder dressed up as suicide…

Scott Walker not only told Joe Jackson during the triple-set of in-depth interviews they did in 1995 - one for radio, one for a rock music magazine and the other for The Irish Times newspaper - that he remembered and really liked a review Jackson did of Walker's album Climate of Hunter in 1984. He said it helped him redefine for himself how his music could best be described at that point. Then, in 2003, Jackson was informed that Scott Walker wanted to use as the booklet notes in the forthcoming box-set Scott Walker in 5 Easy Pieces, a critique of Walker's life and work Jackson had written in 1990. That critique formed the basis of Scott Walker The Fugitive Kind, Jackson's previous book on Walker which also contained its backstory and a personal appreciation of Walker's music from the author's perspective as a lifelong fan. This book, Scott Walker The Joe Jackson Interviews is a companion piece to the first and it also includes a backstory, focusing on aspects of the late Scott Walker's life that have never been discussed in public. One of these interviews when first published instantly became legendary among fans of The Walker Brothers and Scott Walker, particularly those who read Walkerpeople, the newsletter of The Walker Brothers Appreciation Society, in which Jackson gave permission for it to be included for fans. In its preface, Lynne Goodall wrote, ‘From all the press interviews given by Scott this time around THE definitive, in-depth interview surely has to be that which appeared in over two consecutive issues in a music paper. Well-deserved congratulations to interviewer Joe Jackson (and his ever-inquiring mind) for this “epic” volume.' Jan de Rooij, from Holland, wrote, 'the 2-part Joe Jackson interview with Scott is the best I ever read.' Patrick Rogers, from Surrey, wrote, 'The Joe Jackson interview was remarkable-the sort of open-minded, appreciative approach to Scott's music and thinking that has been lacking for so long.' Pauline Armstrong, from Chester, wrote, 'what a masterful interview. Throw away the thumbscrews and send for Joe Jackson! What a shame that Mr Jackson didn't write Scott's biography - that would have been a real eye-opener.' The latter comment, as Jackson says in this book, "had a sting in its tail." In 1990 he suggested to his literary agent that he would love to write a biography of Scott. She said, "I don't think there would be much interest right now in a biography of Scott Walker." However, thirty years later, Joe Jackson now suggests that "both these books, particularly Scott Walker The Joe Jackson Interviews, which I sub-title Looking Back 'Through Mirrors Dark and Blessed With Cracks' - a quote from his seminal song, Boychild - could legitimately be described as the autobiography that Scott Walker never wrote."

Show Takeaways:On how the MENA startup ecosystem has evolved over the last few years…We’ve seen people moving to the UAE to launch their startups because they see the opportunities of starting their businesses. So we’ve seen the market mature over the last few years. Fintech regulators at FSRA and DFSA are creating new frameworks for new types of startups to operate. Regulators don’t like to regulate in a vacuum, they are looking for guinea pigs that they will craft the regulations around. On where the MENA startup ecosystem is heading next and the challenges they face…The sky’s the limit – Amazon creating new possibilities, official unicorn with Careem, it’s drawing talented individuals into the startup ecosystem, who might be in a high paying jobs, seeing exits and such liquidity events attract more talent in the space. On challenges that startups in the UAE face within the legal framework that could be improved…It’s costly to start and operate a startup within the UAE, thus the evolution of operating licenses would allow faster turn around and for a cheaper cost. Government has recognized this and is working towards it – it takes a certain shift in mindset. If you truly want to become a knowledge economy hub, need to take steps and possibly sacrifice traditional drivers of the current economy. On the Step Conference…Being able to connect and collaborate with people who are also along the entrepreneurial path can be beneficial for entrepreneurs and Step Conference allows that entrepreneurial networking to occur. An aside: "Dying Scene Radio has not been active since the election of Donald Trump. The following episode (although the second last installment) is where everything went south for this show. It was at this point that Bobby Pickles realized he had been living in a thought-bubble, and decided that he did not want to placate to the brainwashed liberals who had systematically overtaken the punk rock scene. Scenes are for followers, anyway. Bobby's a leader. Over and out."
