She currently works as Scientific Director at Nourish Balance Thrive, an online health coaching company helping people achieve optimal health and peak performance. In her free time Megan enjoys reading, strength training, and hiking in the Colorado mountains. She wanted to know more about how lifestyle and nutrition play a role in chronic diseases. Plus, Megan was becoming frustrated with conventional medical school education. Instead of pharmaceutical education, Megan wanted to learn more about helping people implement impactful nutritional and lifestyle interventions. Now, Megan works at Nourish Balance Thrive. She helps people achieve optimal health and performance.  [06:15] You Made Necessary Lifestyle Changes But Something Is Still Wrong Megan will help people who already have changed their diets, and their sleep is on point. However, there are still health issues. In this case, Megan says something is going on in the gut. Intestinal permeability or dysbiosis could be causing health issues. A stool test and targeted supplementation can fix the gut problem. There isn't a perfect stool test, unfortunately. [09:40] Mental Emotional Stress Impacts Not Just Our Digestive Health, But Also Our Overall Health There are different ways that stress can impact the gut. Both physical and emotional stress can have consequences. The elevation of stress hormones can cause direct inflammation and lead to further gut-derived inflammation. Stress hormones can potentially even lead to food intolerance if gut permeability is involved. Also, stress can directly impact digestion and nutrient absorption. Our bodies are not designed to digest food while we are under stress. Plus, stress can lead to making poor food choices. Stress can also increase motility and fluid reabsorption in the gut. Take deep breaths before eating – it will bring your body back into the parasympathetic state. [16:05] Eating Before Bed: It Can Affect Digestion, Sleep, And Your Circadian Rhythm  The body expects food to come during the day. Eating inherently increases our energy output and our body temperature. A drop in body temperature is one of the biggest signs or signals for our bodies to go to sleep. If you're eating before bed, you're not able to cool your body temperature down to increase melatonin. Sleep should be a time of rest and repair. If we are digesting while sleeping, it can cause issues. Plus, our gut microbes have their own circadian rhythms. [19:45] Megan Reveals Tips For Overcoming Acid Reflux   Avoid really large meals. Some people have specific food triggers that cause acid reflux. Don't eat close to bedtime. If you're doing everything right, look at what's going on at the level of the gut to see if there's small intestinal dysbiosis. [21:35] How Ketosis Can Impact Your Gut Health It makes sense from an evolutionary lens that our guts evolved to have this metabolic flexibility to adapt to different food resources available at a given time. There is some recent evidence in animals that butyrate may help enhance sleep. Butyrate also seems to have some anti-inflammatory effects both locally in the gut and then also outside of the gut. [25:00] The Importance of Rotating Foods For Gut Diversity When gut cells use butyrate as a fuel, it's actually converted to ketone bodies. Ketones may help improve gut function and also be used as an alternative fuel source for the gut. Increase gut diversity by rotating which foods you eat. Plus, going in and out of ketosis will also help with gut diversity.   [27:25] The Multiple Benefits That Fasting Has On Your Gut Health Longer-term fasting may improve gut barrier function. Improved gut barrier function is associated with reduced relative bacterial abundance. Intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating in your day-to-day life is a good thing. Plus, fasting can give your gut a rest. Strategic fasting is a helpful tool for your toolbox. [38:05] The Problems With Artificial Sweeteners & Which Ones You Should Avoid Monk fruit and stevia are some of the better artificial sweeteners. Whereas aspartame and sucralose are some of the worst. People who consume artificial sweeteners may have higher levels of insulin resistance. Long-term studies in humans looking at artificial sweetener intake that are controlled don't exist. There are a lot of questions that still need to be answered. Artificial sweeteners can potentially impact energy balance. [43:50] How The Carnivore Diet Can Help Heal Your Gut Nutrient-dense whole foods are great for your gut. What diet works for you today may not be helpful for you down the road. Antinutrients in plants can be problematic. They can inhibit nutrient absorption. Some antinutrients will increase intestinal permeability. [48:50] Should You Give Up Coffee For Your Gut Health? Polyphenols in coffee may have a positive effect on the gut microbial ecosystem. However, coffee can be inflammatory. People do not want to give up their coffee. Adding liquid saturated fats to coffee can be making your gut health worse. It can cause significant gut inflammation. If you're having joint pain, brain fog, or an inability to focus, then coffee could be the issue. We need to appreciate that coffee can have both a positive and a negative effect on our gut health. She wanted to know more about how lifestyle and nutrition play a role in chronic diseases. Plus, Megan was becoming frustrated with conventional medical school education. Instead of pharmaceutical education, Megan wanted to learn more about helping people implement impactful nutritional and lifestyle interventions. Now, Megan works at Nourish Balance Thrive. She helps people achieve optimal health and performance.  [06:15] You Made Necessary Lifestyle Changes But Something Is Still Wrong Megan will help people who already have changed their diets, and their sleep is on point. However, there are still health issues. In this case, Megan says something is going on in the gut. Intestinal permeability or dysbiosis could be causing health issues. A stool test and targeted supplementation can fix the gut problem. There isn't a perfect stool test, unfortunately. [09:40] Mental Emotional Stress Impacts Not Just Our Digestive Health, But Also Our Overall Health There are different ways that stress can impact the gut. Both physical and emotional stress can have consequences. The elevation of stress hormones can cause direct inflammation and lead to further gut-derived inflammation. Stress hormones can potentially even lead to food intolerance if gut permeability is involved. Also, stress can directly impact digestion and nutrient absorption. Our bodies are not designed to digest food while we are under stress. Plus, stress can lead to making poor food choices. Stress can also increase motility and fluid reabsorption in the gut. Take deep breaths before eating – it will bring your body back into the parasympathetic state. [16:05] Eating Before Bed: It Can Affect Digestion, Sleep, And Your Circadian Rhythm  The body expects food to come during the day. Eating inherently increases our energy output and our body temperature. A drop in body temperature is one of the biggest signs or signals for our bodies to go to sleep. If you're eating before bed, you're not able to cool your body temperature down to increase melatonin. Sleep should be a time of rest and repair. If we are digesting while sleeping, it can cause issues. Plus, our gut microbes have their own circadian rhythms. [19:45] Megan Reveals Tips For Overcoming Acid Reflux   Avoid really large meals. Some people have specific food triggers that cause acid reflux. Don't eat close to bedtime. If you're doing everything right, look at what's going on at the level of the gut to see if there's small intestinal dysbiosis. [21:35] How Ketosis Can Impact Your Gut Health It makes sense from an evolutionary lens that our guts evolved to have this metabolic flexibility to adapt to different food resources available at a given time. There is some recent evidence in animals that butyrate may help enhance sleep. Butyrate also seems to have some anti-inflammatory effects both locally in the gut and then also outside of the gut. [25:00] The Importance of Rotating Foods For Gut Diversity When gut cells use butyrate as a fuel, it's actually converted to ketone bodies. Ketones may help improve gut function and also be used as an alternative fuel source for the gut. Increase gut diversity by rotating which foods you eat. Plus, going in and out of ketosis will also help with gut diversity.   [27:25] The Multiple Benefits That Fasting Has On Your Gut Health Longer-term fasting may improve gut barrier function. Improved gut barrier function is associated with reduced relative bacterial abundance. Intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating in your day-to-day life is a good thing. Plus, fasting can give your gut a rest. Strategic fasting is a helpful tool for your toolbox. [38:05] The Problems With Artificial Sweeteners & Which Ones You Should Avoid Monk fruit and stevia are some of the better artificial sweeteners. Whereas aspartame and sucralose are some of the worst. People who consume artificial sweeteners may have higher levels of insulin resistance. Long-term studies in humans looking at artificial sweetener intake that are controlled don't exist. There are a lot of questions that still need to be answered. Artificial sweeteners can potentially impact energy balance. [43:50] How The Carnivore Diet Can Help Heal Your Gut Nutrient-dense whole foods are great for your gut. What diet works for you today may not be helpful for you down the road. Antinutrients in plants can be problematic. They can inhibit nutrient absorption. Some antinutrients will increase intestinal permeability. [48:50] Should You Give Up Coffee For Your Gut Health? Polyphenols in coffee may have a positive effect on the gut microbial ecosystem. However, coffee can be inflammatory. People do not want to give up their coffee. Adding liquid saturated fats to coffee can be making your gut health worse. It can cause significant gut inflammation. If you're having joint pain, brain fog, or an inability to focus, then coffee could be the issue. We need to appreciate that coffee can have both a positive and a negative effect on our gut health. Megan Received her BS in Exercise Biology and MS in Nutritional Biology at the University of California, Davis where her research focused on the effects of low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets on longevity and healthspan in mice.  We intended to focus today’s conversation with Megan on the importance of gut health and how to build a bulletproof gut; but we ended up covering all things nutrition, diets, digestive techniques, and lifestyle factors. We do a deep dive into how overlooked gut health is and why it is so important to understand how your system reacts and adapts to certain lifestyle diets and knowing what works for you. Megan shares a few standpoints on why you should buy organic and locally when you can because the produce is fresher, which gives you more nutrients, but also because of the way our mitochondrial function and gut health react to the pesticides on non-local products. Dr. Mullins's bio: Dr. Kevin Mullins is a Sports Medicine Physician at the University is California, Davis. He is originally from Central California where he graduated as a salutatorian while playing varsity basketball at Buchanan High School. He then matriculated into the University of California, Davis, completing his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Biology with Dean’s List Honors in 2011, as well as a minor in African-American Studies. He remained at UC Davis for his medical degree and was awarded the Sacramento Newspaper 30 Under 30 Award for his community engagement as Chapter President of the Student National Medical Association and Co-Director for the Imani Healthcare Clinic. Upon graduation in 2015, Dr. Mullins was selected as Medical Student of the Year by the Departments of Neurology and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Dr. Mullins remained at UC Davis for his PGY-1 internship year, where he completed a combined medical/surgical training program. Dr. Mullins continued residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at UC Davis, where he achieved the honors of being named Electrodiagnostic Resident of the Year as a PGY-2, and later served as a PGY-4 Chief Resident until graduation in 2019. He covered the California International Marathon event for 4 years, leading as a team captain in his final year of the race. Dr. Mullins then completed his Sports Medicine Fellowship at Stanford University, where he worked as a team physician providing sideline coverage for several NCAA Division 1 teams. He also provided care for local junior college (CCCAA) and Division 2 athletes. Dr. Mullins has also gained experience working with professional level athletes from a wide variety of sports. Dr. Mullins is a published author in an academic journal and has given several poster presentations at national conferences including ACSM and AMSSM, as well as at training events including the Annual Team Physician Course. Dr. Mullins has presented for multiple grand rounds, journal clubs, residency lectures and workshops. He is involved in mentoring high school students and educating medical students, and led in the teaching of a weekly Orthopaedic lecture series on the Stanford University undergraduate campus. His clinical interests include motion analysis development, virtual care and ultrasound guided procedures. She also serves as the primary injury spotter for the football program. Susskind Risso received her BS in Exercise Biology and BA in Psychology from the University of California, Davis in 2009, as well as her Master's in Athletic Training from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville in 2012. Susskind Risso believes in a global and functional approach to injury management and prevention by assessing the body and relative mechanics as a whole, in addition to the mental, emotional, and psychosocial aspects of student-athlete well-being. She is passionate about female athlete health care, the intercollegiate health care model, and specific mental health concerns in the student-athlete population. They discuss: The difference between the traditional medical model for working with a SCI and a movement based approach Why Pilates inherently lends itself to being so beneficial to this group The benefits of getting on the ground and using rolling patterns after an SCI Why the diagnostic tests may not always accurately measure SCI recovery Zebra Fish Neuro and how it will help movement teachers, Pilates instructors, and fitness professionals work with people who have an SCI About Stephanie Behrendt Comella Stephanie has engaged in over 15,000 hours working directly with individuals with spinal cord injury and other neurological disorders. She was first introduced to Pilates in 2014, which forever changed her thinking about spinal cord injury rehabilitation.  Stephanie graduated from University of California, Davis in 2011 with a B.S. in Exercise Biology. She studied sports medicine and exercise-based rehabilitation as an intern with the university's Division I athletes. After graduation, Stephanie served as a Neuro Exercise Therapist and Manager at a spinal cord injury & neurological disorder specialty gym in Pleasanton, CA for almost 5 years before starting a Pilates-based SCI recovery program – AbsoluteENDEAVOR – at Absolute Center in Lafayette, CA in 2015. She blends her formal education, vast experience with SCI, and training in Pilates and mindful movement to provide a unique style of training that is focused on body re-connection.  Stephanie is a Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) Certified Pilates Instructor through Balanced Body, as well as an American Council on Exercise (ACE) professional since 2008. About Theo St. Francis Theo has been exploring the vast landscape of body-reconnection since his 2013 injury at the start of his Mechanical Engineering and collegiate swimming careers at MIT. Having the trajectory of his healing completely redirected by his practice of Pilates, Theo is now working on ways for others to benefit from the same effective therapy. Theo is the author of TheOvercoming blog, where he shares the journey of reconnecting to his body. Since he first read Calais-Germain's Anatomy of Movement textbook while in a cervical collar at inpatient rehab, he has approached his healing as a research project on which his life depends. Having sought out and worked with Pilates instructors around the country on his healing journey, Theo seeks to blend various mindful practices to discover which ways best reconnect a paralyzed body.
