I outline the benefits of a carnivore or all-meat elimination diet, explaining how it helps reduce inflammation and provides the most bioavailable form of nutrients. I also discuss the importance of maintaining a proper electrolyte balance, which can become disrupted on a carnivore or low-carb keto diet, leading to issues such as leg cramps and restless leg syndrome. Additionally, I touch on addressing gut health and environmental factors like mold and chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). I also highlight the crucial role of a positive mindset and stress reduction in healing, advocating for a comprehensive, root-cause approach that empowers you to achieve long-term wellness and healing.I discuss the following:Starting with Diet: The Foundation of WellnessDangers of Antinutrients and Organic PesticidesVisual Contrast Sensitivity Test ExplainedUnderstanding CIRSDeep Dive into Carnivore Cure's Elimination DietElectrolyte Imbalance on a Carnivore DietThe Role of Antidiuretic HormoneCIRS and Tick-Borne InfectionsThe Power of the Mind-Body ConnectionHarnessing the Placebo Effect for HealingThe Impact of Chronic Stress on HealthInflammation and the Importance of Raw Nutrients_____RESOURCESCarnivore Cure Elimination GuideVCS test (if you put me as your practitioner, we get the results and can give you feedback)CIRSBeginner CIRS Mind Body ProgramMB Program DepositMind Body VideoMind Body Video 2____SIGN UP FOR MY WEEKLY NEWSLETTERCHECK OUT MY BOOK, Carnivore CureCHECK OUT MY SECOND BOOK, The Complete Carnivore Diet for Beginners: Your Practical Guide to an All-Meat Lifestyle_____ ADDITIONAL RESOURCESNutrition with Judy ArticlesNutrition with Judy ResourcesNutrition with Judy Podcast_____ FIND ME

TIME STAMPS: 01:12 Josh's backstory: Cured GERD & GASTRITIS with a diet of … you guessed it … MEAT AND SALT
Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr Anthony Chaffee. He's an American medical doctor and Neurosurgical resident who, over a span of 20+ years, has researched the optimal nutrition for human performance and health. He claims that the majority of the so-called chronic illnesses are brought on by the food we consume and can be treated by switching to a diet tailored to our species. About 23 years ago, when Dr Anthony was taking cancer biology at the University of Washington, they were learning about the roles of plants. Plants in general have about a million different defense chemicals that are used to poison and deter animals and insects from meeting them up. They need to be able to protect themselves because animals and insects are constantly attacking them. They learned that quite a few plant toxins had already been demonstrated to be carcinogenic by researchers and that people had even recognized this fact. Brussels sprouts had 136 identified carcinogens, and then mushrooms had over 100. And then all of these different produce items that people would eat on a regular basis would have dozens and dozens of different carcinogens in them. That's why Dr Anthony is on full carnivore. In this episode, Dr Anthony speaks about the toxins people are getting from eating plants. He gives some advice on what you can do to avoid chronic disease and live a longer life. Tune in as we chat about carcinogens, plant toxins, hormetic effects, and the effects of eating full carnivore on your body. -------------------------------------------------------- Download your FREE Vegetable Oil Allergy Card here: https://onlineoffer.lpages.co/vegetable-oil-allergy-card-download/ / / E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S
Who is Amy Puzey and what is her mission?? Amy began her education in nursing at University of Alberta and a few years into her degree realized she wanted to work on the preventative side of health and switched to study holistic nutrition. She became a holistic nutritionist in 2005 and CEO and National Race Director of 5Peaks in 2013 to take the Canadian trail running community to the next level. She sold 5Peaks in 2021 to fully dedicate herself to Goodphyte. In 2008, Amy started researching how the enzyme phytase could neutralize the anti-nutrient, phytate, and the result is GoodPhyte. While not all GoodPhyte customers are athletes, this innovative enzyme has found a beloved home within that community, with many customers reporting marked improvements to their ability to train, perform and recover much faster than they could without it. How does GoodPhyte work? It uses phytase to counteract the anti-nutrient phytate. Phytate is present on ALL grains, nuts, beans, and seeds. Think of it like a self-protective coating that plants use to stop their seeds from being eaten before they have a chance to sprout. Phytate can make you feel bloated and uncomfortable, can impair your use of amino acids and protein, and, even more importantly, block you from absorbing important nutrients like zinc, iron, magnesium, and calcium. While ruminants like cattle, sheep, and deer have stomachs that can deplete phytate, we humans with only one stomach, need some extra help. Phytase — the key ingredient in GoodPhyte — is the enzyme which breaks down phytate, giving you access to those nutrients. You're doing all the right things, but you still don't feel right — blame phytate Even though we try hard to eat well, exercise, and get enough sleep, feeling depleted, exhausted and bloated is a daily reality for many. No matter what we do, we still don't feel good. That's because the phytate in our diet is causing digestive discomfort, and it's also preventing us from absorbing the nutrients from our food or our vitamin supplements — hence the low energy. Without the ability to absorb zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium and amino acids, our everyday health can be severely impacted. There are two ways to dissolve phytate: Soak, sprout, slow-cook, or ferment your food ahead of time. This can remove 50%-70% of phytate from your food. It's a great option, but can be challenging with a busy schedule and it still doesn't counteract all the phytate. Take 1-3 GoodPhyte capsules per day to counteract all the phytate in your food. Everyone's dose is different and depends on your diet. Vegans typically need 3-4 capsules of phytase per day, whereas omnivores may only need 1-2. Who knew plants were trying to kill us.THAT sounds extreme. And it very much is. But in truth, that's the sort of things we hear about on social media when it comes to "antinutrients". But like anything nutrition, there are two sides to every story, and there is a ton of room for nuance. So today, fresh off talking about this on The Morning Show, I'm diving into it in a little more detail, and more categories when it comes to this concept. Just like there are nutrients in plants, there are also these ANTI-nutrients that can prevent us from getting the goods out of what we eat. But, there are many ways around them, and we're getting into it today. Later, Kevin ended up getting diagnosed with osteoporosis in his early 30s. Kevin was devastated about his diagnosis. At the time, Kevin had gut health issues, poor energy, wasn't sleeping well, and had high stress. So, Kevin knew he had to address everything to fix his health. Finally, Kevin got the right plan for his health and bones. [06:10] The Answer To Your Health Problems Won't Come From The Pharmacy Kevin always thought that the answer to his health problems would come from a pharmacy or a doctor. Throughout his life, Kevin took sleeping pills, antidepressants, antibiotics, and countless other medications to help address the signs and symptoms of his condition. However, he never really received a complete resolution of those issues because he was just covering up the cause. Kevin just wanted to divest himself from thinking that the solution to his health was in a pill. [09:20] The Importance of Gut Health For Your Overall Health Your body and your bones are like plants. To grow, they need nutrients and the right conditions. Most people focus on nutrients like salads and smoothies. They're not considering the soil. Our gut is like the soil; it is where we absorb almost everything. To absorb anything, you need roots in your soil. Our roots are called villi. They're these tiny little hairlike projections that cover our small intestine. The villi will shuttle nutrients into your bloodstream so they can travel where they are needed in your body. When you have poor digestion, you won't be able to break down food properly. [13:45] Gut Health: Testing Your Stomach Acid and Other Options First, figure out where your stomach acid is; there are a few different tests that you can do. If you have low stomach acid, you can supplement with betaine HCl. You could also use some digestive enzymes to help break down your food. You need a digestive stool test to understand what is going on inside your microbiome. Then, you will work with a practitioner to build a protocol. Check out Gut Zoomer: https://www.vibrant-wellness.com/tests/gut-zoomer/ [15:50] Do I Have To Stop Drinking Coffee If I Have Gut Issues? Do I have to stop drinking coffee? The answer is no. The big concern is caffeine when it comes to coffee. Caffeine is going to vary slightly to increase calcium excretion. Most people don't need to avoid coffee. Instead, drink less. If you've got caffeine intakes greater than 300 milligrams a day, calcium excreted in the urine will increase. [17:30] When Should I Get My First Bone Density Scan? The earlier, the better when it comes to getting your first bone density scan. Around 30 or 40 would be an excellent time to get your first scan. Get a scan now so you can understand where you are at. Maybe you will find out something that you can start addressing now. You can build bone strength at any age. It just gets more challenging as you get older. [22:30] Finding A Functional Medicine Practitioner For Postmenopausal Women Primary osteoporosis is typically related to the decrease in estrogen in postmenopausal women. When estrogen levels decrease as they do during menopause, it's going to cause an increase in the activity level of cells that break down bone. You need to have conversations with a functional medicine practitioner or a naturopathic physician to determine if hormones will be right for you. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy could be the right choice. [28:00] Spinach and Kale Could Be Causing Digestive Problems Oxalates are an antinutrient. Antinutrients can cause problems for people who have digestive issues. People eat a lot of spinach. If you can't break down the oxalates, you will have some issues. Instead, you should eat arugula; it is super low in oxalates. [30:10] Why Kevin Is A Massive Fan of Coconut Oil Coconut oil is good for energy, weight, brain function, heart health, memory, skin, hair, and teeth. Coconut oil can be helpful in the protection against bone loss. Plus, it's great because it is full of MCT; they go straight to the liver. Lastly, coconut oil has antimicrobial effects. [37:40] The Importance of Having A Strategy When It Comes To Bone Health If you rely on a single supplement, you may lose more bone because you didn't have a strategy. Kevin will develop a strategy that addresses root cause issues. You have to get to the underlying issue! [12:15] Can Diabetes be Reversed with a Plant-Based Vegan Diet? Controlling blood sugar levels and insulin resistance are issues with diabetes. Lowering your insulin is the treatment for that. How may insulin levels be decreased? You lessen the level of carbs in your body. When you stop eating carbohydrates, your body will produce the right amount of carbohydrates, which will cause your insulin levels to decrease. Dr Anthony hasn't heard of many people doing a Plant-based diet to cure type one diabetes but there are studies with ketogenic diets helping type one and type two diabetes. Some people with type one diabetes have radically changed how they manage their condition by adopting carnivorous or even ketogenic diets. They only need to provide a small amount of long-acting insulin, which will last them for the entire day, rather than many doses of the drug throughout the day. [18:52] All Plants Have Carcinogens! Why Plants Are Trying to Kill You There are undoubtedly things that have the potential to have hormetic effects. However, there is a claim that all of these plant toxins, literally millions of them, are not produced by plants for human benefit because we are not living in the Garden of Eden. There's no actual evidence provided to say which chemicals are hormetic. At what dosage? Just get one leaf from your spinach or sage. That doesn't necessarily have all the same chemicals. What kind of surroundings did it grow in? What kind of soil was it? What time was the pick? When must it be chosen as having to be freshman, it must be medicines. All of these objects' chemical makeups are altered by this. And so now all of a sudden, you don't know what dosage of digitalis you're getting. You can experience this beneficial hormetic effect in very small dosages. But it's in very controlled doses. [24:04] How can you tell whether something is working for or against you? You could follow an entire elimination diet. Do it for a month, then assess your feelings. After that, you introduce each thing one at a time. Some people are more resistant to these harmful chemicals and will have a better ability to detoxify these things. [31:51] Eating The Right Animal Protein on the Carnivore Diet Pick through exactly what you're eating. You can gain a small volume of muscle and bone and lose a large volume of fat and you'll gain weight, but your body composition will be different, and your clothes will fit differently. [44:03] Heart rate variability: A sign to see if meat or plant toxic are good or bad for you? Nothing in meat will disrupt your heart's rhythm or bring on an arrhythmia. However, you might be hiding something. For example, your electrolytes are slightly out of balance, which is uncommon on a carnivorous diet. However, it may be claimed that when you switch to a ketogenic diet or a carnivore diet that is ketogenic from eating a lot of carbohydrates while your insulin is up, your levels of insulin suddenly go down. If there's one thing we've learned, the world of diet and nutrition is full of controversy. People are deeply entrenched in their diet camps and routinely, various nutrients become vilified. Though, it's never that simple. Today we take on the topic of antinutrients. Antinutrients are plant-made chemicals that bind and potentially prevent the absorption of important vitamins and minerals. The most controversial of these antinutrients is lectin. Lectins are found in beans, peanuts, tomatoes, potatoes, lentils, and many other foods. Some medical influencers advise removing these foods from the diet completely. But is that really necessary? In today's episode, we discuss the controversy around antinutrients - specifically lectins. Are they as harmful as people think? Today, I am blessed to have here with me Megan Hall. She received her BS in Exercise Biology and MS in Nutritional Biology at UC Davis where her research focused on the effects of low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets on longevity and health span in mice. This episode originally aired in July 2021. She currently works as Scientific Director at Nourish Balance Thrive, an online health coaching company helping people achieve optimal health and peak performance. In her free time Megan enjoys reading, strength training, and hiking in the Colorado mountains. In this episode, Megan opens up the show by explaining why she wanted to learn more about nutritional and lifestyle interventions for optimal health. Even if you are making the necessary lifestyle changes, you can still be facing health issues. Megan explains why you may want to consider the gut as the reason you are having problems. Plus, Megan talks about how both physical and emotional stress can impact our gut health, and she gives tips on avoiding stress during mealtime. Tune in as we chat about overcoming acid reflux, the impact keto and fasting have on gut health, and whether or not you should give up drinking coffee. [00:35] Why Megan Got Started In The Health Space In college, Megan became interested in functional medicine. She wanted to know more about how lifestyle and nutrition play a role in chronic diseases. Plus, Megan was becoming frustrated with conventional medical school education. Instead of pharmaceutical education, Megan wanted to learn more about helping people implement impactful nutritional and lifestyle interventions. Now, Megan works at Nourish Balance Thrive. She helps people achieve optimal health and performance. [06:15] You Made Necessary Lifestyle Changes But Something Is Still Wrong Megan will help people who already have changed their diets, and their sleep is on point. However, there are still health issues. In this case, Megan says something is going on in the gut. Intestinal permeability or dysbiosis could be causing health issues. A stool test and targeted supplementation can fix the gut problem. There isn't a perfect stool test, unfortunately. [09:40] Mental Emotional Stress Impacts Not Just Our Digestive Health, But Also Our Overall Health There are different ways that stress can impact the gut. Both physical and emotional stress can have consequences. The elevation of stress hormones can cause direct inflammation and lead to further gut-derived inflammation. Stress hormones can potentially even lead to food intolerance if gut permeability is involved. Also, stress can directly impact digestion and nutrient absorption. Our bodies are not designed to digest food while we are under stress. Plus, stress can lead to making poor food choices. Stress can also increase motility and fluid reabsorption in the gut. Take deep breaths before eating – it will bring your body back into the parasympathetic state. [16:05] Eating Before Bed: It Can Affect Digestion, Sleep, And Your Circadian Rhythm The body expects food to come during the day. Eating inherently increases our energy output and our body temperature. A drop in body temperature is one of the biggest signs or signals for our bodies to go to sleep. If you're eating before bed, you're not able to cool your body temperature down to increase melatonin. Sleep should be a time of rest and repair. If we are digesting while sleeping, it can cause issues. Plus, our gut microbes have their own circadian rhythms. [19:45] Megan Reveals Tips For Overcoming Acid Reflux Avoid really large meals. Some people have specific food triggers that cause acid reflux. Don't eat close to bedtime. If you're doing everything right, look at what's going on at the level of the gut to see if there's small intestinal dysbiosis. [21:35] How Ketosis Can Impact Your Gut Health It makes sense from an evolutionary lens that our guts evolved to have this metabolic flexibility to adapt to different food resources available at a given time. There is some recent evidence in animals that butyrate may help enhance sleep. Butyrate also seems to have some anti-inflammatory effects both locally in the gut and then also outside of the gut. [25:00] The Importance of Rotating Foods For Gut Diversity When gut cells use butyrate as a fuel, it's actually converted to ketone bodies. Ketones may help improve gut function and also be used as an alternative fuel source for the gut. Increase gut diversity by rotating which foods you eat. Plus, going in and out of ketosis will also help with gut diversity. [27:25] The Multiple Benefits That Fasting Has On Your Gut Health Longer-term fasting may improve gut barrier function. Improved gut barrier function is associated with reduced relative bacterial abundance. Intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating in your day-to-day life is a good thing. Plus, fasting can give your gut a rest. Strategic fasting is a helpful tool for your toolbox. [38:05] The Problems With Artificial Sweeteners & Which Ones You Should Avoid Monk fruit and stevia are some of the better artificial sweeteners. Whereas aspartame and sucralose are some of the worst. People who consume artificial sweeteners may have higher levels of insulin resistance. Long-term studies in humans looking at artificial sweetener intake that are controlled don't exist. There are a lot of questions that still need to be answered. Artificial sweeteners can potentially impact energy balance. [43:50] How The Carnivore Diet Can Help Heal Your Gut Nutrient-dense whole foods are great for your gut. What diet works for you today may not be helpful for you down the road. Antinutrients in plants can be problematic. They can inhibit nutrient absorption. Some antinutrients will increase intestinal permeability. [48:50] Should You Give Up Coffee For Your Gut Health? Polyphenols in coffee may have a positive effect on the gut microbial ecosystem. However, coffee can be inflammatory. People do not want to give up their coffee. Adding liquid saturated fats to coffee can be making your gut health worse. It can cause significant gut inflammation. If you're having joint pain, brain fog, or an inability to focus, then coffee could be the issue. We need to appreciate that coffee can have both a positive and a negative effect on our gut health. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Austin Cavelli. She helps people optimize their health by burning fat for fuel and reducing years of underlying inflammation from the standard American diet. Her approach focuses on quality nutrition by way of nutrient-dense animal products. This episode originally aired in August 2021. Austin is a board-certified, nationally accredited physician assistant. I have treated thousands of patients with acute and chronic inflammatory diseases, including various autoimmune conditions. In addition, Austin has worked for several years in research studying addiction and the aging brain. Austin's background in research has taught her how to conduct experiments, a skill that has proven extremely useful in helping clients find what works specifically for them. In 2014, Austin earned my Master of Science degree from Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences in NYC. Prior, Austin received her bachelor's degree in psychobiology from Binghamton University. In this episode, Austin opens the show by explaining why she started following a carnivore diet. After years and years of digestive issues, the carnivore diet finally put Austin on the track to a healthy life. Austin explains what antinutrients are and why they could be causing some of your health symptoms. We talk about common myths like not eating fiber will cause constipation and the alleged link between red meat and cancer. Tune in as we chat about the importance of electrolytes, organ meats, and reintroducing keto foods into your diet. Register your FREE spot for our upcoming 7 day keto challenge. [02:20] Why Austin Decided To Follow A Carnivore Diet Austin struggled mainly with digestive issues for most of her life. She suffered from chronic constipation and chronic pains with food. So, Austin tried a paleo diet and cut out diary. Eventually, Austin noticed that when she cut out certain vegetables, her digestion was getting better. Then, she realized more fats would make her feel better. It wasn't until Austin went carnivore and cut out fiber that made her digestive issues go away. [06:30] Antinutrients Could Be The Reason For Your Symptoms Joint pain is a big issue. Antinutrients can also cause chronic constipation. Also, antinutrients can be hindering your mental clarity and sleep. Lastly, antinutrients may be causing low energy levels. Switching to carnivore can vastly improve mental clarity, sleep, energy, digestion, and joint pain. [08:35] Why You May Want To Ditch The Antinutrients Take away antinutrients to see if your health improves. Antinutrients will affect every person differently. The gut will be most affected by antinutrients. In fact, they can even cause leaky gut. First, you have to clean the gut before you introduce probiotics. If you add probiotics to an unhealthy gut, then it's not going to help. Remove the antinutrients in order to heal the gut temporarily. [14:15] Do You Need Fiber To Have Regular Bowel Movements? People think that going on a carnivore diet will result in constipation. Other people say that the carnivore diet will result in explosive diarrhea. When switching to carnivore, the increased amount of fat could result in diarrhea. So, go heavy on protein instead of fat. Liquid fats will run right through you. [16:30] Why You Shouldn't Drink Water When You Are Eating Your Meals When you are eating a carnivore diet, you already have a lot of protein which requires stomach acid to break it down. To maximize stomach acid, prevent water 30 minutes before and after a meal. It takes our body more effort to digest cold water. Instead, drink room temperature water. When eating, it is best not to just stress the body and make sure that you can focus on the digestion of food. [17:45] Electrolytes Are Critical When Following A Carnivore Diet Austin is a minimalist when it comes to supplements. If you are going to eat organs, then eat the actual organs. Supplements are processed, so it's time to eliminate those from your diet when possible. If you are starting a carnivore diet, then you need more electrolytes. Take a magnesium supplement; it's not readily available in our soil anymore. Austin recommends Pure Encapsulations: https://www.pureencapsulations.com/ [22:00] Why You Should Eat Organ Meat And How To Make It Taste Good Liver is the most bang for your buck. The beef heart is very mild. Another organ that is easy on flavor is the beef tongue. Slow cooking the beef tongue will make it easy to consume. [26:45] Can I Get Cancer From Eating Too Much Red Meat? Keto and carnivore have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. The red meat studies were not accurate – they were not looking at just the consumption of red meat. Everything comes down to inflammation. When you reduce antinutrients, you are reducing inflammation. By doing these things, you are actually reversing your chances of getting cancer. The number one cancer center in the United States is promoting a ketogenic diet. [32:50] How To Transition From Carnivore To Keto Depending on what foods trigger your symptoms will depend on how you want to transition from carnivore to keto. For instance, if sweet things trigger your symptoms, then you may want to avoid fruits. However, if sweet foods are not your trigger, then you can start to reintroduce berries back into your diet. Avocado is a safe food to bring back into your diet. Also, some people even cut out eggs when they go on a carnivore diet. That's another food item you can start incorporating when getting back to the keto lifestyle. AND MUCH MORE! Asa Santiago (gut-goals.com) has been reading and studying optimal diet and nutrition VORACIOUSLY for around decade, and using his extensive research to help his clients radically improve their health and lives. In 2021 he set the goal to read 500 studies over the year, but exceeded that number just half way into it. You think he takes his work seriously? I took this opportunity to ask him a range of questions and let him rap about all things diet and nutrition. It was quite a ride. We covered everything from healing yeast infections and anxiety with diet; ketosis; a different angle on grounding; dealing with parasites and gut microbes; things that undermine the endocrine system; the benefits of dry fasting; which diets do what to the body; gluten, lectins, nightshades, antinutrients and allergies; eating to support hormonal health; causes of leaky gut and what to do about it; problems with carbohydrates; how the adaptive immune system operates in relation to food; histamine sensitivity and mould... and MUCH more. Enjoy the show - and do keep a pen and paper handy to take notes! ;) Special Guest: Asa Santiago.

In this video, Dr. J and Evan explain the causes and symptoms of salicylate oxalates sensitivity. Salicylates are compounds that you can find in foods, medications, and other products that can cause adverse reactions in intolerant ones. An intolerance to these compounds is linked with a wide variety of symptoms, making it hard to identify. The most common symptoms involve the respiratory system. However, the skin and intestinal tract may also be affected. Oxalates are often known as an anti-nutrient, as they tend to bind up some crucial nutrients in foods, which stops them from being fully absorbed. Intolerance occurs in your body when the oxalates themselves are not detoxified from the body, allowing them to build up in the tissues. A low-oxalate diet is commonly advised for joint conditions including arthritis and gout and children on the spectrum. ===================================== Subscribe on I-Tunes: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/itunes Review us at: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/itunes Visit us at: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com Have a question: http://www.beyondwellnessradio.com/question
Does the host of this show eat only or mostly plants? It seems in the common tongue the word health is synonymous with ‘vegan' or ‘plant based' which to many of us healthy eating practitioners, gurus, and experts out there is quite funny as we see the marketing genius playout on BOTH sides of the food conversation. This doesn't mean that there aren't lots of people making health decisions with plants and the same amount of people making healthy choices whilst eating lots of meat!In This Episode I Cover:Plant-based ideologies and binary thinkingThe challenges of being plant-basedIs Your diet JERF or not***Join the Busy Mum's Facebook Group here: https://mattylansdown.com/BusyMothersFBgroup ***--SOCIAL MEDIA--MATTY LANSDOWNJoin the Busy Mum's Facebook Group: https://mattylansdown.com/BusyMothersFBgroupInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattylansdown/--Thanks for checking out the show. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Austin Cavelli. She helps people optimize their health by burning fat for fuel and reducing years of underlying inflammation from the standard American diet. Her approach focuses on quality nutrition by way of nutrient-dense animal products. It's 5 p.m. The kids are hungry, again, and you are scrounging around the fridge and cabinets, trying to figure out what to feed them for dinner. One of them would eat only bread and potatoes, if you let him. The other turns her nose up at anything green. How can you possibly feed them meals that they might actually enjoy eating, that also truly nourish at the same time? Corey Dunn is a homeschooling mama of four who is helping a growing community feed their real kids, real food. She offers numerous ideas for nutrient-dense meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She talks about how she manages the pickiest eater in her family and how she reduces stress at the dinner table. She gets specific about brands she likes and strategies she uses to feed her family well on a budget. Last but not least, she reminds us that many foods can be "upgraded" to become more nourishing, and even more delicious. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Megan Hall. She received her BS in Exercise Biology and MS in Nutritional Biology at UC Davis where her research focused on the effects of low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets on longevity and health span in mice. We’re back with Marty Kendall, my nutrient density brother from another mother! I’ve been following his work since we recorded our first episode 2.5 years ago and he’s always doing something interesting and informative. We cover a very interesting “scandal” in the rodent nutrition study world. I won’t spoil the details but it really is a shame these researchers took out this certain data, because all the other work they’ve done is spot-on. We also hit all my other favorite topics in this one like nutrient density, satiety, insulin, personal fat threshold, the nutrient leverage hypothesis, and a whole lot more. Here we are at the end of the 4 part Africa series with my amazing friend Mary Ruddick. If you haven’t listened to the previous 3, I’d suggest going back and starting at the beginning. I’d really recommend doing this for this entire podcast series. It’s designed as an educational journey through the complex, conflicting world that is nutrition, health, food, the environment, and more. This episode covers the rest of our journey including the Datoga tribe, the Chagga on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, and the transition of all the native living populations into the villages and then into the city. It’s a very clear decline in health as they do so. Make sure to watch this video interview on the Food Lies youtube channel to see all the photos and videos from our trip. I went back and added them all in and you’d also get to see Mary’s smiling face as we talk! There’s a bunch of great presentations and videos on the Food Lies youtube channel as well. You can see the Game CHangers DEBUNKED film, the Food Lies trailer, and a lot of short highlights from interviews that will go into the film. You’ll hear us talk about Cows 4 Kids which is the organization Mary and I started after seeing the lack of animal foods in the diet of many of the tribes we visited, especially with the youngest people who need them the most. You can go to http://cows4kids.com and click through to the Indiegogo campaign there. We already are over 60% of our campaign goal through all the generous contributions to the cause. 100% of the money is going to purchase animals for the school children. Mary and I had a great Zoom call with one of our big contributors who put almost his whole covid relief check in. He said he didn’t ask for it, didn;t need it, and would rather see it go much further to help the communities in need. Check out what we’re doing at http://cows4kids.com Also support the show and my team by checking out what we’re doing at http://nosetotail.org We have boxes of grass fed and finished beef, buffalo, and lamb that’s shipped out to the 48 US states. We also have the low Omega 6 PUFA pork and chicken. Our other specialty is the ground beef with organs mixed in - it’s extra special because it has the liver, heart, kidney, and spleen. Most people stop at the liver and heart. Our skin food is back in stock. It almost sold out immediately when we got our new batch. It’s that good, I’m telling you. It’s really a great deal as well because a little goes a long way. I still have barely dented my jar. It’s made from regeneratively grown beef tallow and is all hand made. You can add on our freshly ground seasonings and biltong as well. Biltong is a south african traditional beef snack with no sugar, nitrates, or other wacky stuff. It really saved me on the long flights to and from Africa - I don’t think I’d have made it without my Nose to Tail biltong. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Craig Emmerich. Craig graduated in Electrical Engineering and has spent the last 15 plus years researching nutrition and working with thousands of clients alongside his wife, Maria Emmerich. He is an international best-selling author of the "Keto: The Complete Guide" and "The Carnivore Cookbook." He uses his knowledge of how our bodies work to help clients heal and lose weight leveraging their biology to make it easy. In this episode, Craig speaks about his journey to the ketogenic lifestyle. Craig explains how plants can negatively impact our guts. Kale and spinach can be some of the most significant irritants to our guts because of their antinutrients. Also, Craig reveals what other plants are chock full of these antinutrients. Later, we speak about the benefits of eating red meats, and we bust the myth that red meat causes cancer. Tune in as Craig tells us how fat loss works from a metabolic standpoint, and we hear about Craig's plans in 2021. // E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S PureForm Omega Plant Based Oils (Best Alternative to Fish Oil): http://www.purelifescience.com Use ben4 for $4.00 off. ☕️ Purity Coffee: http//:www.ketokampcoffee.com, use ketokamp at checkout for 10% off [00:30] About Craig Emmerich Craig is an ex-engineer; it leads him to look at nutrition differently. Craig’s wife, Maria, would make keto meals for the family. On the weekends, Craig would eat whatever he wanted. Craig realized when he ate whatever; he would feel awful. So, to feel better, Craig started eating keto for every meal. Your body is adaptable. If you constantly flood your body with inflammatory foods, then it can deal with it. You won’t notice the incremental pain. When you cut it all out, you get a massive reaction and realize what it's doing to your body. [05:30] How Our Gut Is Affected By Plants Plants can make issues in our bodies worse. Sometimes, it will even cause the issues. Your body wants nutrients. However, antinutrients are compounds that your body does not want. Your body will have to detox these antinutrients. There are thousands of these compounds in plants. Plants don’t want you to eat their leaves because it will kill the plant. Spinach and kale have oxalates in them in high amounts. They will irritate the gut and cause leaky gut. Mainstream media doesn’t discuss these issues with plants. [10:45] Antinutrients Found In A Keto Diet Lectins are a big problem. There are tons of compounds in our foods that can cause problems. Tannins are an antinutrient that is in grapes and wine. You can die if you get too many oxalates. That’s the problem with green smoothies. Plus, there are loads of compounds that we haven’t even studied. When you know the reason for starting a keto lifestyle, then the way you do it can be very different. We have been taught that more vegetables are the way to go, but it’s not always the truth. [17:45] The Benefits of Eating Red Meat As far as red meats go, there is a huge metanalysis that was done last year. It looked at all the available information out there on red meat and cancer. They found that there is no correlation between red meat and cancer. When you eat red meat, there can be amazing improvements to your cardiovascular system. Try out the carnivore diet and see how it works for you. There are loads of vitamins and minerals in red meat. Focus on protein because that will be the best part of your plate. More protein is usually better, especially for people on a keto diet. [24:40] How Fat Loss Works From A Metabolism Standpoint We process protein, fat, and carbs the same. Oxidative priority is how our body will process our fuels. When you eat a meal, you have hundreds of calories flooding the bloodstream. The body has to prioritize how it will use the fuel. The last priority for the body is fat because we have a massive amount of fat storage; it is easy for the body to store fat. Alcohol is the number one priority for the body because you cannot store alcohol. When you eat with alcohol, the body has to deal with the alcohol first. The body doesn’t want to use protein as a fuel; it wants to use it to repair cells. If you cut out alcohols and keep your carbs to a minimum, then fat will be your own variable. Adjust your fat levels based on your goals. Inflammatory effects of foreign protein gluten/lectins (prolamins) and our digestive tract
We have Shawn Wells for the entire hour on One Life Radio today! He's talking about Antinutrients. Wells has written a guide to help, which I'm using in this post. Here's an excerpt to help better understand antinutrients: Plants are inherently healthy, right? Yes, and no. We just expect plants to be good for us, because that’s what we’re told, but the truth is that we have to be careful about what we eat, no matter what the source is. Some natural compounds are poisonous to us, like arsenic, and some (too many) natural foods are contaminated with one of the most detrimental ‘anti-nutrients’; round-up! The bottom-line is that while plants are healthy for us, some do contain natural compounds that are counterintuitive to our health. These compounds have been collectively called anti-nutrients. Just because plants are natural doesn’t mean they’re healthy. include Phytates, Oxylates and Gluten, and are a class of compounds found in plants to help them survive. In other words, defense mechanisms for the plant. You can prepare the plants you eat in certain ways to minimize the effects of anti-nutrients. Wells says to just vary your diet, and you'll be fine. And, even Shawn says that even he has cheat day. Visit his website for more information on antinutrients and lots more at www.shawnwells.com. You can download his guide to antinutrients here
Today’s episode is all about antinutrients. We define them as substances found in foods that cause problems in the body sometimes -- meaning, they are not always harmful to everyone. We talk more in-depth about the food sources and potential harmful effects of specific antinutrients such as Phytic Acid, Lectins, Goitrogens, and Oxalates. We discuss how to prepare foods high in antinutrients to reduce digestive issues. We give you tips on how to adjust your diet if you are particularly sensitive to one of these antinutrients, as well as how to determine whether you do have a sensitivity. We give options for those who have high sensitivities to many antinutrients, such as using certain diets -- like autoimmune paleo and elemental -- as stepping stones to rebalance. What is an Antinutrient? 4:36Phytic Acids, Lectins, Goitrogens, Oxalates, 7:43Protease Inhibitors; Tannin; Tips for Diets 30:33The Purpose of Nutrition; Success Story 49:07“Now, if you really want to be sure that your thyroid health is on track, you might want to just do some blood testing, rather than cutting out food groups and trying to guess about what your thyroid’s needing or what your iodine status is like. If you have really low T3, maybe you do need to back off the cruciferous and get more iodine in your foods.” 24:45Socialwww.mygutsyhealth.comhttps://www.instagram.com/gutsy_mom/@provohealth@gutsy_mom
