This episode of the No Film School Podcast features two deep and distinct conversations. First, host GG Hawkins reunites with filmmaker Pete Ohs, who returns to share the unique distribution experiment he's launching with four films releasing throughout 2026. He reflects on his “table of bubbles” filmmaking philosophy and his desire to find joy instead of stress in the release process. Later, GG is joined by composer Hollie Buhagiar, whose original score for GG's debut feature I Really Love My Husband is now out. They break down their collaborative process in detail, from early cue drafts to the film's final emotional moments, revealing how bird calls, pitch-shifted vocals, and “surf rock” found their way into the film's DNA. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guests discuss... Pete Ohs' philosophy of “table of bubbles” and how it's guiding his 2026 film distribution approach Why Pete is using a different distribution strategy for each of his four new films What feels broken about indie film distribution today — and how to approach it differently Hollie Buhagiar's journey into composing and her intuitive, emotion-driven scoring method The evolution of the score for I Really Love My Husband, including early drafts and final cues How creative freedom, happy accidents, and imperfect instruments brought the film to life The importance of developing a shared language between director and composer Memorable Quotes: "The films are a table made of bubbles. They cannot support anything." "The biggest result is just — is this fun?" "What's a convincing note?” "With great power comes great responsibility — even for the piano." It's a Christmas miracle: a bonus Movie Squad episode! Earlier this month, Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo were invited to be part of Accent, the Music and Sound in Australian Cinema Conference held at the University of Western Australia. As a Boxing Day surprise (especially for those who were disappointed by their Xmas haul), we're gifting you the live recording of their session, titled Australian Film Scores and Needle Drops. From the propulsive synth of Gallipoli to the twinkling strings of Somersault; the manipulated didgeridoo in The Last Wave to the droning loops of Snowtown: Australia's most iconic film scores and needle drops are a demonstration of contrast and dissonance. (Movie about a killer boar? Better pull out the Fairlight CMI. Dark comedy set on the fictional ‘jewel of the north coast', Porpoise Spit? Let's licence all the ABBA songs.) In this live podcast recording, RTRFM's resident film critics Tristan Fidler and Simon Miraudo, aka Movie Squad, celebrate Australian movie music that clashes like a Muriel Heslop ensemble, and discuss the contemporary musicians who've tried their hand composing for locally-made features. No cultural cringe allowed! Featuring special guests… Dan Golding – writer, composer, broadcaster, academic, host of the Art of the Score podcast and the Screen Sounds program on ABC Classic radio, and Professor and Chair of Media and Communication at Swinburne University of Technology. Grace Brooks – writer, academic and teacher; co-convener of the Accent conference. The filmmaker John Carpenter has a whole shelf of cult classics: “They Live,” “The Thing,” “Escape from New York,” “Halloween,” and so many more. And while he hasn't directed a new movie in more than a decade, Carpenter has continued working in the film industry, composing scores for other directors (Bong Joon Ho recently approached him about a horror movie). He has also released albums of cinematic music—no film required—often working with his son, Cody Carpenter, and the musician Daniel Davies, his godson. The New Yorker Radio Hour producer Adam Howard talks with Carpenter ahead of the launch of his new small tour, just in time for Halloween, and they discuss the unusual shift he made from directing to composing. “It's a transition from pain to joy. Directing movies is very, very stressful,” Carpenter explains. “Playing music in front of a live audience—it's joy. It's just joy.” Carpenter suggests three inspirational scores from film history: Bebe and Louis Barron's electronic music for “Forbidden Planet”; Bernard Herrmann work on Hitchcock's “Vertigo”; and Hans Zimmer's music for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.”

Welcome to Cinematic Sound Radio's celebration of the 35th anniversary of Film Score Monthly. In 1990, a young film music fan named Lukas Kendall began what was to become Film Score Monthly with a Xeroxed newsletter sent to a handful of fans who signed up to receive the snail mail newsletter. From there, the newsletter turned into one of the biggest soundtrack publications in the world. The magazine's run ended in 2005 at 150 issues. It ceased printing due to budgetary reasons. The magazine, however, still lives on in the digital world as FSM On-Line. A byproduct of the magazine was a record label, which began in 1998 with the release of Jerry Goldsmith's STAGECOACH / THE LONER. Lukas would go onto produce 250 FSM CDs, many of them long-sought-after "holy grails." The label would cease production in 2013. The website and popular message board are still running, but are in desperate need of updating. That's where you come in. Lukas is currently raising money on Kickstarter to help fund a brand-new website, message board, book, CD and more! As of the release of this episode on June 20th, 2025, the Kickstarter has reached its initial goal of $25,000 and is currently in its stretch run to raise an additional $25,000. If you've already pledged, thank you, but if you haven't, then please head over to the Kickstarter by CLICKING HERE and donate what you can to help keep this film music institution running smoothly for the next 35 years! To celebrate FSM's 35 years, I'm going to play for you my top five favourite Film Score Monthly CDs of all time, featuring the music of Franz Waxman, Bronislau Kaper, Johnny Green, Stu Phillips, Elmer Bernstein, Alexander Courage and Jerry Goldsmith. In a show jam-packed with superb music, Jason Drury opens with a 10-minute suite of Christopher Young's new soundtrack for the 1922 silent horror classic, NOSFERATU A SYMPONY OF HORROR (Warner Classics). Jason then moves on to selections from John Williams' 2000 score THE PATRIOT, which Intrada Records recently released to commemorate its 25th anniversary, Trevor Jones' score for the 1982 Jim Henson-directed dark fantasy THE DARK CRYSTAL (La La Land Records), and, as a tribute to the late John Morgan, music from the 1982 sci-fi horror THE AFTERMATH (Dragon Domain Records). The show continues with a 2024 re-recording of Dimitri Tiomkin's score for the 1958 adventure drama THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA (Intrada Records), followed by music from the 1972 science fiction horror film HORROR EXPRESS by John Cavacas (Quartet Records/Citadel Records), and selections from Nile Rodgers' score for the 1994 comedy sequel BEVERLEY HILLS COP III (La La Land Records). The wonderful theme from John Barry's Oscar-winning score from the 1985 film OUT OF AFRICA (Intrada Records) continues the show. It's Casual Friday! Joining us is Heather "Digby" Parton from the blog Hullabaloo. Also, H Jon Benjamin, aka the Jazz Daredevil, joins us to talk about his new soundtrack project and his live show in New Jersey. See the Jazz Daredevil in New Jersey here: https://www.subpop.com/artists/jon_benjamin_jazz_daredevil/tours First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Harris-Walz blue wall press, Trump's interview dropouts, Israel's killing of Yahya Sinwar and ongoing assaults on Gaza and Lebanon, early voting in the US, death and justice in Texas and Tennessee, Secret Services' systemic failures, and an unseemly $30m drop in the polymarket bucket, also parsing through Trump's confusingly bad appearance on Fox and Friends, leaving hosts stunned over his nonsensical ramblings about attack ads and education. Diby then joins, as she helps Sam and Emma unpack Trump's struggles at the most sycophantic of town halls with Univision, as he continues to get in his own way with his lies about January 6th and obsession with anti-immigrant fear-mongering. They also dive into early voting turnout trends, with massive numbers out of swing states highlighted by a particular gender gap favoring Democrat-voting women, and explore what that says about the GOP's low-propensity push, before shifting into an extensive conversation on the Trump campaign's preemptive attacks on election integrity, and what an attempt to steal the election with real political infrastructure behind it could look like. H. Jon. Benjamin. then helps to explore the relationship between luck and success, and why random and annoying DOES, in fact, = funny.   And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack Jerry Seinfeld's wildly reactionary relationship to comedy, watch Elon Musk make even the most sycophantic audience look awkward, and listen to Donald Trump struggle to tie together some frayed conspiratorial strings about “King of the Woke” Harvey Weinstein, plus, your calls and IMs!
