‘Where life had no value, and death sometimes had its price. That is why bounty hunters appeared.' For decades, the Italian, or Spaghetti Western, has entertained and thrilled cinema audiences all over the world. Its distinct style, as well as its inventive musical scores, has influenced and inspired actors, filmmakers, and composers. It is a genre that is still enjoyed today by many. This unusual but entertaining ensemble of films influenced not just the western film as we knew it, but also had a lasting effect on many other movies. Some of which were produced long after Italian westerns had ridden off into the proverbial sunset of cinema history. On today's episode, join Jason Drury and special guest Italian Western music expert John Mansell as they uncover the musical delights of this quirky but important collection of sagebrush sagas. The unique musical sounds crafted by the composers you will hear go largely unnoticed and underappreciated today. Enjoy! John Mansell's book, ITALIAN WESTERN: VIOLENT IMAGE, SAVAGE SOUNDTRACK – THE MUSIC OF SPAGHETTI WESTERNS is available now on Amazon. Although we're now a couple months into 2025, I finally present you with the "best" film scores of 2024. As usual, there are some very mainstream scores in here that most observers would agree with and there are a few left field choices. If you're a longtime listener, that shouldn't surprise you. As with all of these lists, although I say they're the "best", what I really mean is these are my favorites. Who's to say what's really the best? Surely not me. If you can't control yourself, look below to see what scores I picked, though you'll miss out on the why of it all. And make sure to check out my conversation with David Rosen (from Piecing It Together) to see what we think are the best film scores of the decade (so far). The months of April, May, and June released some of my favorite scores of the year (feel free to guess which) as well as arguably the most popular score of the year in Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's Challengers, and plenty more scores, both big and small. I also noticed that I've interviewed almost a third of the composers mentioned during this period - I still get surprised now and again with just how many folks I've interviewed! In this episode, we dive into a fascinating conversation with Asif Illyas, a veteran of the Canadian music scene and an ECMA Award-winning composer and musician. Asif has additionally made a name for himself in the world of film and television scoring, blending his classically trained musicianship with intuitive, innovative approaches to composition. A true intellect, we explore the depths of his creative process, spanning across analytical techniques, emotional intuition, and the bridge between the worlds of music and technology.   Originally from Sri Lanka, Asif's journey to Canada was sparked by his father's academic pursuits at Dalhousie University, and now, Asif has firmly planted his roots on the East Coast of Canada. In this episode, he shares how his lived experiences shape his work and reflects on how music—especially film scores—has the power to deeply connect with people. When you watch a movie in a crowded theater, you give your undivided attention to the experience itself. Your senses lock into the action on the screen and the sound from the speakers, and you're completely immersed. World's First Cinema replicate the moviegoing experience in their music. The Los Angeles-based duo—John Sinclair and Fil Thorpe—project a myriad of intimate emotions across widescreen soundscapes underpinned by scenes of alternative, indie, pop, and electronic. After amassing over 20 million streams and counting and earning widespread acclaim from WONDERLAND., EUPHORIA., Earmilk, The Line of Best Fit, and many more. A mutual friend invited John and Fil to a game night, and they naturally started chatting. A few weeks later, they met up for a session, cooking up their 2020 debut single “Can't Feel Anything.” It eventually generated 2.2 million Spotify streams followed by “Red Run Cold” with 7.5 million Spotify streams. Both songs adorned their debut Rituals EP in 2021. They inspired tastemaker praise with “Supernatural.” Of the latter, The Line of Best Fit urged, “think Panic! at the Disco meets Michael Jackson's ‘Thriller' – it's fun, funky and spooky,” and WONDERLAND. attested, “the L.A.-based duo are redefining pop one theatrical rock melody at a time.” Carrying this momentum into 2022, “Young Beast” generated 1.7 million Spotify streams, and they teamed up with Punctual for the fan favorite “Castles.” In the end, World's First Cinema present an escape worthy of the big screen, and you'll never want the credits to roll.www.caughtonthemike.com

Quincy Jones Receives Posthumous Oscar, and Daughter Gives His SpeechAt the Governors Awards, Rashida Jones spoke on behalf of her father, who died earlier this month at the age of 91.Before his death two weeks ago, the musician and producer Quincy Jones wrote a speech he intended to deliver at the Governors Awards, where he would receive an honorary Oscar at the ceremony created by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. On Sunday night in Hollywood, his actress daughter Rashida Jones delivered that speech on his behalf before a rapt audience.“As a teenager growing up in Seattle, I would sit for hours in the theater and dream about composing for films,” she said while channeling her father, who was a Black trailblazer in Hollywood: “When I was a young film composer, you didn't even see faces of color working in the studio commissaries.”Nominated seven times, Jones was given a different honorary Oscar — the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award — in 1995, back when these awards were still part of the televised Oscar broadcast. To shorten that show, the honorary awards were spun off into their own event in 2009.Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez staked their seats out early while the directors Luca Guadagnino (repping both “Challengers” and “Queer”) and Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”) compared notes on film formats. The “Succession” stars Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin reconnected on the terrace outside the party; both men are supporting-actor contenders; Strong for “The Apprentice,” Culkin for “A Real Pain.” And the stars of “Emilia Perez,” Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón, proved to be popular presences in every corner of the ballroom. The first honoree of the night was Juliet Taylor, who has cast more than 100 films over the course of her career including “The Exorcist,” “Terms of Endearment” and “Annie Hall.” While accepting her Oscar, she described her job as being “able to appreciate actors when they're not all that likable and appreciate directors when they're not easy.”Daniel Craig came out to present the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to the producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who have served as the stewards of the James Bond franchise for nearly three decades. After taking the reins of Eon Productions from their father, Albert Broccoli, the half-siblings produced the last nine Bond films beginning with “Goldeneye,” Pierce Brosnan's first foray in the role, all the way up to Daniel Craig's final Bond outing, “No Time to Die.”-Kyle Buchanan

It's Casual Friday! Joining us is Heather "Digby" Parton from the blog Hullabaloo. Also, H Jon Benjamin, aka the Jazz Daredevil, joins us to talk about his new soundtrack project and his live show in New Jersey. See the Jazz Daredevil in New Jersey here: https://www.subpop.com/artists/jon_benjamin_jazz_daredevil/tours First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the Harris-Walz blue wall press, Trump's interview dropouts, Israel's killing of Yahya Sinwar and ongoing assaults on Gaza and Lebanon, early voting in the US, death and justice in Texas and Tennessee, Secret Services' systemic failures, and an unseemly $30m drop in the polymarket bucket, also parsing through Trump's confusingly bad appearance on Fox and Friends, leaving hosts stunned over his nonsensical ramblings about attack ads and education. Diby then joins, as she helps Sam and Emma unpack Trump's struggles at the most sycophantic of town halls with Univision, as he continues to get in his own way with his lies about January 6th and obsession with anti-immigrant fear-mongering. They also dive into early voting turnout trends, with massive numbers out of swing states highlighted by a particular gender gap favoring Democrat-voting women, and explore what that says about the GOP's low-propensity push, before shifting into an extensive conversation on the Trump campaign's preemptive attacks on election integrity, and what an attempt to steal the election with real political infrastructure behind it could look like. H. Jon. Benjamin. then helps to explore the relationship between luck and success, and why random and annoying DOES, in fact, = funny.   And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack Jerry Seinfeld's wildly reactionary relationship to comedy, watch Elon Musk make even the most sycophantic audience look awkward, and listen to Donald Trump struggle to tie together some frayed conspiratorial strings about “King of the Woke” Harvey Weinstein, plus, your calls and IMs! Dipping back into the well again, reaching to September 2020, here's the audio version (cleaned up and shortened) of my review of Mondo Boys' score for She Dies Tomorrow. Again, the audio is still a little rougher but after thirty seconds or so you don't really notice (or at least I didn't as I was editing). There's also a nauseating little cue thrown in the middle - which I embarrassingly called a "song", which Sony was kind enough to give me permission to use when I first recorded this. I don't have a written review of this one, but I did end up reaching out to Mondo Boys shortly after and interviewing them: https://thefilmscorer.com/an-interview-with-mondo-boys/ This is one of my favorite interviews, because we recorded for about two and a half hours on a Saturday night, drinking whiskey. How I turned it into a tight, coherent, sub-hour interview I don't know...

Film Score Review II: 'Five Shaolin Masters' by Yung-Yu Chen

The Film Scorer

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2024 5:18

Somewhat early on in The Film Scorer days, I did a few video reviews of film scores. The first was the 1974 score for Five Shaolin Masters, by the prolific Chinese composer Yung-Yu Chen. Given that the show is currently between seasons, there's a bit of time to kill (and I know you're all clamoring for new episodes), so I've decided to clean these up a bit and release them through the podcast as well. First off: Chen's score. The audio here is a little rougher than you're used to, as it may have been before I even owned a mic. But that's balanced out by a nice little capture of the main motif of the score that comes about halfway through. This also went surprisingly "viral" on YouTube, racking up nearly 60,000 views. If you enjoy this and want some more, just let me know - I've been meaning to record some more reviews and keep procrastinating... On Sunday, June 16th, 2024, Jason Drury traveled to London's Barbican Centre to watch and listen to music performed by the world's greatest film music orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra. The evening celebrated the orchestra's 90th anniversary of performing film scores. Under the direction of the equally great Dirk Brossé, they performed suites from twenty scores, some well-known, some underrated, all pure quality. Listening to all that wonderful music gave Jason an idea. Why not produce an Archive Show celebrating the music of the LSO featuring scores all performed by this wonderful ensemble? So, that's what we are going to do today. In addition, as with the concert, Jason will play one cue from the film or a small suite. And, because it is a ‘concert', you will hear several of these suites with as little contribution from your trusted host as possible. Welcome to Cinematic Sound Radio's celebration of the music of the London Symphony Orchestra. While we may not think of it very often, music has a long history of influencing how we think about spaceflight. From the scores of early silent films to the modern classics we all know, like 2001: A Space Odyssey and the never-ending franchises of Star Trek and Star Wars, we often have a riff going through our minds when we see a space image—few can hear Strauss' Blue Danube without thinking of the space station in 2001, or see a tilted yellow title scroll without hearing that first orchestral crash of John Williams' immortal Star Wars score. And, in real life, we had the talented astronaut Chris Hadfield performing David Bowie's classic hit Major Tom, augmented by upbeat lyrics. Space music is big, and Chris Carberry, CEO of Explore Mars and author of the recently released book The Music of Space, is here to tell us why! Headlines: China launches Chang'e-6 mission to the far side of the moon, aiming to collect and return the first-ever samples from this region Boeing completes final flight readiness review for the CFT crew flight test mission, set to launch on May 6th with a 95% chance of good weather James Webb Space Telescope successfully maps weather on exoplanet WASP-43 b, located 280 light years away, showcasing the telescope's potential for studying distant worlds Main Topic: The Music of Space Chris Carberry discusses his new book "The Music of Space: Scoring the Cosmos in Film and Television" and his motivation for exploring the connection between space and music Early examples of space-related music in film include the scores for "Metropolis" (1927) and the space documentary "Our Heavenly Bodies" (1920) The pivotal role of Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" in using classical music to depict space, and how it influenced future filmmakers John Williams' iconic score for "Star Wars" (1977) marked a turning point in film scoring and revitalized orchestral music in cinema The concept of music as a universal language and its potential for communicating with alien civilizations Chris Hadfield's rendition of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" on the International Space Station and the challenges of playing music in microgravity The role of music in future space settlements, its impact on mental health, and how it may evolve in different environments like Mars Chris Carberry's previous book "Alcohol in Space" and the history of alcohol consumption in space missions The need for studying the effects of alcohol on human physiology in space as commercial spaceflight advances Hosts: Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik Guest: Chris Carberry Download or subscribe to this show at https://twit.tv/shows/this-week-in-space.
