Success depends on you changing your mindset about health and disease prevention. As you know, I really like talking to breeders of all kinds. Breeding is breeding, and we can learn so much from great breeders, no matter the animal they are breeding. I too raise and breed pigeons, and having the opportunity to Interview a pigeon breeder has been on my bucket list for a long time. I was recently introduced to one of the top pigeon breeders and racers (Frank McLaughlin). The best part is when it comes to health care and disease prevention, I couldn't have done better than Frank McLaughlin. He thinks a lot like me. If you don't know who Matt Fraction and Brian Michael Bendis are, you probably weren't reading Marvel comics in the first decade of the 21st century, because they pretty much wrote all of the best ones. In its April issue, Club + Resort Business released its annual rankings of the top fitness and wellness centers. The fitness and wellness facility at Addison Reserve Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla. earned the No. 1 ranking in C+RB's recognition program. In this episode of Club + Resort Talks, C+RB Senior Editor Phil Keren spoke with Anthony Biondolillo, the club's Assistant General Manager, and Grant Worthington, the facility's Director Sports Operations, to learn more about Addison Reserve Country Club. Biondolillo and Worthington expressed their appreciation for receiving this honor, discussed what their fitness and wellness center offers that makes it stand out from similar facilities, and shared information about upcoming improvements at the club. In addition to an informative conversation with Biondolillo and Worthington, Phil also spoke with Club + Resort Business Editor Rob Thomas about some of the latest news stories happening in the industry. Phil and Rob discussed two stories showcasing golf courses' increasing efforts to be more environmentally conscious: Greenway Golf Associates this past week announced they entered a partnership with with master architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and his golf course design company, Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects (RTJII), to renovate the North Course at Corica Park in Alameda, Calif. Greenway selected Robert Jones Golf Course Architects because of the company's world-renowned expertise and environmental leadership in golf course design. Leisure World Golf Course in Silver Spring, Md. this week achieved Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP for Golf) certification. Christine Kane, CEO at Audubon International, says that to earn this certification, golf courses must “demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas.” Leisure World's accomplishments included: expanding native vegetation; removing invasive plant species; providing quality wildlife habitat; and conducting water quality testing. Frank McLaughlin, Golf Superintendent, and Alan Nelson, Golf and Greens Committee Certification Project Manager, led the effort. Meanwhile, a course in California is still working to recover from a major weather event last month. In March, there were a couple of heavy storms that wiped out six holes at River Island Country Club in Porterville, Calif. Holes 10, 16, 17 and 18 are severely damaged and 11 and 12 are beyond repair and need to be completely rebuilt. Terry Treece, the club's General Manager, said he is going to be meeting with an architect and a construction company on the course. He says he thinks the total damages will cost a few million dollars, but he hopes his estimate is on the high side. Read more at www.clubandresortbusiness.com.

A review of the Government's drug buyer Pharmac will focus on the timeliness and transparency of its decisions.Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Health Minister Andrew Little announced the independent review's terms of reference at Parliament today. The Pharmac review will focus on two areas:how well Pharmac performs against its current objectives and whether this could be improvedwhether Pharmac's current objectives maximise its potential to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders as part of the wider health system and whether these objectives should be changed. It will also consider factors including:the timeliness of Pharmac's decision makingthe transparency and accessibility of its decision makingequity - including access to medicines and devices for Māori and Pacific peoples. The independent review panel will be chaired by the former Consumer chief executive Sue Chetwin and will include corporate governance consultant Frank McLaughlin, experienced health and governance expert Heather Simpson, pharmacist prescriber Leanne Te Karu, preventative and social medicine professor Sue Crengle and disability advocate Dr Tristram Ingham. The review is intended to run until the end of the year with an interim report in August and a final report in December."I expect that the review committee will decide its own consultation process but that it will include at a minimum the appropriate input from consumers, Māori, Pacific peoples, clinicians and industry," Little said. The budget for the review is expected to be between $1.5 and $2 million.Ardern said the review would help New Zealanders have confidence in the system.Ardern said broadly the Pharmac model worked well but they'd heard concerns about the model and the Government believed there was scope to improve it."Pharmac is a model that's critically important to the health sector and viewed as world leading - but let's make it better if we can."Little said concerns raised about the drug-buying agency included access to new medicines, timeliness of decision making and its priorities."In addition there have been concerns about the safety of substituting medicines due to cost and availability, and access to products that are funded in other countries but not here in New Zealand."Nearly 4 million New Zealanders received medicines procured by the drug agency. The review was committed to by Ardern during an election debate with National leader Judith Collins who also promised to review the agency if elected.Ardern said when asked if Labour would commit to a review, she said: "If it gives people faith in our system, then yes."Newsroom reported this morning the review will investigate how the government drug-buying agency can better respond to specific government health priorities relating to emerging drugs and more.In 2019 the Health Select Committee voted against a politician-led inquiry into the agency. The National Party said it appeared Labour only committed to the independent review when it was "politically palatable".Little confirmed the Government was planning an independent inquiry into Pharmac and that Labour just didn't support it being led by politicians on the Health Select Committee.Little said they wanted it to be independent and considered it "inappropriate" for MPs to do it."It needs to be at arm's length from politicians. It's not right for politicians making political judgments about Pharmac and its decisions."There are high-level policy decisions but it is better that they are reviewed at arm's length and independently," he said last year.He said work is under way to establish terms of reference and an appropriate review body.

Discover DEP: the Official Podcast of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection
The Camden Collaborative Initiative (CCI) is a solutions oriented partnership between governmental, non-profit, private, and community-based agencies formed to plan and implement innovative strategies to improve the environment and the quality of life of Camden’s residents. The CCI is building upon the success of environmental initiatives underway, made possible by the efforts and resources of multiple partners that have come together to address the complex environmental issues present in the City. For their work, the CCI received an Environmental Champion Award from the Environmental Protection Agency. Bob Bostock spoke to Frank McLaughlin, Environmental Specialist, who represented DEP at the awards ceremony to tell us more about the innovative work that is transforming Camden.
