It's Cork v Limerick in the 2021 All Ireland hurling final and what a mouth-watering game it promises to be. Ultimately Cork got over the line despite Kilkenny's last gasp heroics, whilst Limerick were too good for Waterford, and on this week's Throw-In, John Mullane and Frank Roche joined Will Slattery and Michael Verney to look back on the semi-finals and preview how they see the final going. Mullane has been singing Cork's praises for the last number of weeks and he says their tradition and self-belief will count for much in their approach to the final. “The Rebels are the rebels,” says Mullane. “And the Rebel Roar was back yesterday. Cork hurling is in a very good place. Their dander is up, they're hurling very, very well. They can be extremely dangerous opponents for anyone and here we are now, we're going to be in for a thrilling final with both Cork and Limerick.” The panel also discussed Kilkenny's fight and determination and what the future holds for Brian Cody, while Mullane also says that the Waterford county board must stick with Liam Cahill for them to fulfil their potential. In the football, Frank Roche looks ahead to next weekend's semi-finals with question marks over Dublin's form the biggest what-if, alongside that of whether and when Tyrone and Kerry will get the go-ahead due to Covid concerns. With the League barely out of the way, we're already looking forward to the start of the 2021 All Ireland football and hurling championships this weekend and in a special preview show, John Mullane and Dick Clerkin join Will Slattery, Michael Verney, Colm Keys and Frank Roche with their predictions for the summer. It's a two-horse race in both the football and hurling our experts are predicting and despite a lot of people tipping Kerry, Dick Clerkin believes Dublin will still have too much for the Kingdom in the home stretch and will make it seven-in-a-row. But it's beyond the big two where he thinks most of the interest will lie. “There's an awful lot to look forward to for a lot of counties in terms of the competitiveness that's there,” he says. “And like there was last year with the Cavan and the Tipperary stories there will be similar stories this year. I'm really looking forward to a lot of those sub-battles and plots throughout the provinces.” In the hurling, John Mullane and the rest of panel are all going for a Limerick win with Galway pushing them all the way. But history beckons for John Kiely's men, says Mullane. “In Limerick the back-to-back has never been done before and I think Kiely and Kinnerk realise they've a special group of players. They're a very well grounded bunch of players and there's a realisation there that they want to win as much as they can when they can, when the going is good and the going is good now at the present moment in time and I think they're going to achieve back-to-back titles.” Listen and follow the Throw-In on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, with new episodes every Monday throughout the Championship. Dublin and Kerry’s drawn game in Thurles over the weekend threw up more questions than answers but looking to the Championship is the Kingdom any closer to dethroning Dublin? Dick Clerkin and Frank Roche joined Will Slattery and Michael Verney to look back on all the football action while Ursula Jacob reviewed the hurling and camogie games. There was something for both the Dubs and Kerry to take away said Dick Clerkin. “I think Kerry will be taking a step back saying 'there's an awful lot of good to take out of that going down the home straight, but we've loads to improve on. Dublin done as Dublin do. They played good, they were efficient - bar the first ten minutes - they were ruthless in front of goals, they controlled the middle third but they just couldn't close the game out.” However, it was refs and rules that’s taking up most of the air-time still, with the panel asking where’s the consistency and why so many grey areas now exist. In hurling, Tipp seem to have found their goal-scoring form again with a five-point win over Galway but more red cards for Limerick means their discipline issues haven’t gone away. However, John Kiely is still positive about his team’s form, though their air of invincibility seems to be dissipating with every game. Meanwhile, off the pitch, the fall-out from Wexford players testing positive for Covid which meant two Clare players were deemed ‘close contacts’ and ineligible to play against Laois, is rumbling on with Clare manager Brian Lohan calling for clarification on the situation, while Frank Roche called it a ‘very, very unusual’ situation at the least. On this week's episode of The Throw-In, Will Slattery and Michael Verney are joined by John Mullane and Frank Roche to review the latest weekend of Allianz League action. What was meant to be a hurling-only weekend also ended up featuring three football matches as inclement weather continues to cause havoc with the schedule. Limerick vs Waterford and Galway vs Tipperary were both called off last weekend, which will cause a delay in the hurling league later in the campaign. On the pitch, Wexford pipped Kilkenny in another dramatic clash between the sides, and Mullane thinks that Davy Fitzgerald's men now have a psychological edge in the rivalry. Mullane also thinks that Wexford's attacking defenders are transforming the sport, and thinks the Yellow Bellies are still firmly All-Ireland contenders. In football, the lads assess the state of play in the lower divisions, with the promotion and relegation battles extremely difficult to call in Division Two, Three and Four. It was one of the best football finals of the decade and Dublin and Kerry get to do it all again, but did Kerry leave it behind them? Ciaran Whelan joined Michael Verney, Frank Roche and Conor McKeon to look back on the 2019 All Ireland final and he reckons both teams have room to improve for the replay on September 14th. "These Kerry forwards are a special talent and operating at a different level to what Dublin have been used to," says Whelan. "Dublin will improve. They won’t be happy with that level of performance. But Kerry will also get better. Is this the start of something special from them?" All the panellists tip Dublin to win the replay but Kerry's belief will be real going into the game and it's all set up for another tension-filled, dramatic finale. History is still on the line. The hurling decade started with Tipperary and has now ended with Tipp as All Ireland champions once again. Brendan Cummins joined Will Slattery, Colm Keys, Frank Roche and Donnchadh Boyle on this week's show to assess Tipp's dominance over the Cats in recent years. After all, this has been the most successful period for Tipp since the 1960s and have the shackles of the past been finally thrown off and is this Tipperary team the benchmark for future generations? "The experience of the players along with the younger firepower has upped their game management," believes Cummins. "All-Ireland medals are won by the teams and players that keep their composure the most. Who can keep their head when the pressure is on? That’s why Liam MacCarthy is heading back to Thurles this year." Why you can’t buy momentum and have Mayo got a Plan-D, a plan for Dublin?

Mayo’s victory over Donegal at the weekend was one of those great days and was the stand-out occasion of the Football Championship so far, but they’re now facing just a six-day turn-around to play a more rested Dublin team in Croke Park. “It’s not working and it’s not fair,” says Mayo’s David Brady on this week’s Throw-In podcast. “However, you can’t buy momentum, regardless of injuries being carried into next Saturday. Dublin haven’t been tested properly this year but Mayo are the team to do it.” John Brennan and Frank Roche also joined Brady, Will Slattery and Michael Verney on the show as they looked back on the Super 8s and previewed the Dublin v Mayo and Kerry v Tyrone semi-finals next weekend. Brady excepted, most of the panel feel Dublin will have too much for Mayo, while Kerry v Tyrone is going to be fine margins as well. Mickey Harte’s team will probably feel they can get at Kerry, though the class of Clifford will be key if he makes it. Plus, the panel gives their verdict on the Super 8s three year tenure, what we learned from Diarmuid Connolly’s return, and special mentions for the Rising Stars of Cork’s U20 All Ireland football champions overturning a nine point deficit to beat Dublin by eight points. But once again we’re talking about, and looking forward to, another mouth-watering instalment of Dublin v Mayo in the Championship. “Have Mayo got a Plan-D, a plan for Dublin?” asks Brady. “The higher you raise the bar for this Mayo team the more they relish it. Have Kerry timed it all perfectly with their team hitting top form at the business end of the Championship? Their 10 point win over Mayo was as good as they’ve played in recent years and David Brady reckons they are the only real contenders to the Dubs now. Brady joined Will Slattery, Michael Verney and Frank Roche on this week’s Throw-In as they looked back on the opening rounds of the Super 8s and as for Mayo, it was ‘complete and utter capitulation’ according to Brady. Elsewhere, it was business as usual for Dublin with their win over Cork, but it was the announcement of Diarmuid Connolly’s return to training that has generated the most talking points. In hurling, Brian Cody’s Kilkenny showed they haven’t gone away with a top-class performance against Cork. Cork’s inconsistencies though, and failure to deal with the big stage will surely have John Meyler’s management team tearing their hair out. And the panel give their special mentions for the weekend’s Rising Stars and no surprise that David Clifford wins special praise for how he is already Kerry’s star man. "It's the acid test for Waterford," he says. "They have to really up their performance to challenge this Limerick team and use the same template as Dublin by clogging up the middle third. Croke Park suits both teams but you'd have to side with the form team, Limerick." Tomás Ó'Sé also joined the panel to discuss the football final match-up of Kerry v Mayo with Kerry the slight favourites he reckons. "Mayo have no fear of playing Kerry and will raise their game. This is Frank Roche for the Postcardist News Network reporting today’s postcard news. Today’s top stories: Tired of the post office shredding your postcards? Now you can pay for the privilege with Hello from Banksy, a postcard that has to be shred to be read. The Super Bowl of U.S postcard shows opens November 16 and 17 at the York International Postcard Expo in York, Pennsylvania.  It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…at least in North Pole, Alaska, where you can get a special cancellation for your holiday postcards. And where else can you get an original by some of the world’s leading artists? The auction for Art on a Postcard is where. Plus…more. Postcard books I read in October. And more. Stay tuned. ****** Welcome to Episode 42 of The Postcardist Podcast. After our terrific storytelling episode last week on the Halloween Episode, I thought I’d try a little something just for fun. There’s a lot of postcard news out there…   Here we go….   Hear that? It’s the sound of Bansky’s Girl with Balloon being shredded right after the gavel fell at a Sotheby’s, where the framed drawing sold for over one million dollars. As soon as the purchase was final, a Banksy confederate activated a switch that made the drawing slide down through the frame and get sliced into a hundred strips.   Now…you can get a postcard inspired by that fine art prank. Designer Lesha Limnov created a postcard for the Rijksmuseum called Hello from Bansky. It looks like a miniature, framed piece of art. But pull at a tab on the bottom, and the precut postcard comes out in shreds. As you slice the postcard to ribbons, what’s left behind is a small, secret message, filled out by the postcard’s sender. Their concept: Destroy the masterpiece and leave your message inside the postcard.  Cost is $10 on the Shuba site…alas, they’re out of stock, but I’m first in line to get the collection.   Next up on the Postcardist News Network is the York International Postcard Expo on November 16 and 17. Recognized as the largest antique postcard show in the country, the show will feature dealers from more than 30 different states and Europe and new dealers have been added this year bringing such specialties as Art Nouveau, Real Photo, Russian, Holiday cards and U.S. and foreign views. Visitors can look forward to viewing millions of postcards. Postcards of every artist, country and topic from any era can be found at the York Fairgrounds Postcard Show. For more than 25 years Mary Martin Ltd. has hosted its annual postcard show held at the York Expo Center in York, Pennsylvania. Plus, I’ll be there. With a microphone. Talking to dealers and collectors and the who’s who in postcarding. Maybe I’ll get a special cachet or two.   Our third story is about the North Pole. Or more specifically, the US. Post Office at North Pole, Alaska. They’re already gearing up for the holiday season with their special Letters from Santa postmark. How this affects us in the postcard community is this: there’s a special North Pole Holiday cancellation you can get in the United States if you send postcards to the location. According to the USPS postal bulletin,  Customers wanting a special holiday postmark need to do the following (and I’m paraphrasing for the Postcardists):  Personalize your postcard, seal it in an envelope and print addresses on the postcards. Place a postage stamp on each postcard. Mail all addressed postcards together in a larger envelope to NORTH POLE HOLIDAY CANCELLATION POSTMASTER 4141 POSTMARK DR ANCHORAGE AK 99530-9998 Myself, I’m going to send a bundle of Christmas postcards with great stamps and address them to people on my list. And I’m going to ask them to place the North Pole postmark on the cards, then drop them in the don’t-overspray bin…and there you. Go. The last day the USPS recommends sending cards or letters is December 8.   Also..for postcardists in the U.S there are a number of special cancellations in certain cities such as REINDEER STATION in Rudolph, Ohio and Santa Claus Station in Santa Claus, Indiana. Also, those of you who like sprayed on cancellations should know the USPS will apply a Happy Holidays cancellation with Santa in his sleigh from Saturday, Dec. 1 to Friday, Jan. 4. If it’s anything like the Thinking of You cancellation, it might be hard to discern.     Our final story on the Postcardist News Network is about the secret auction, Art on a Postcard, that runs now through November 15. Art on a Postcard presents a unique chance to own a mini masterpiece by an artist who would normally be well out of most people's reach. Certainly mine. The auction features some of the most collectable and interesting contemporary artists practicing today, such as Marina Abramović, Humphrey Ocean, Rob and Nick Carter, Martin Yeoman, Vanessa Jackson, and Maria Kreyn. Here’s the catch: But you'll never know who you're bidding for, as all of the work is anonymous until after the sale. You can get involved online at www.artonapostcard.com. Simply browse through the different works on display and choose your favourites to bid. Whoever bids the most, wins. The auction ends at midday on November 15, 2018. Art on a Postcard raises money for The Hepatitis C Trust, so it's all for a good cause.   That’s the news.   Finally, this month I read a bunch of postcard books I’d like to recommend. The include:   Atget: Postcards from a Lost Paris by Benjamin Weiss The Postcard Age: Postcards from the Era of World Wars (The Leonard A. Lauder Postcard Archive) by Jozefacka, Klich, Kreinik and Weiss Paper Jewels from the Raj by Omar Khan Postcards from the Boys by Ringo Starr. There’s a reason I mention this one I’ll get into soon.   Meanwhile, there are a couple extra bits of postcard news. Variety announced that Jeffrey Dean Morgan, star of AMC’s series “The Walking Dead,” and Connie Nielsen have signed on for the Janusz Kaminski-directed thriller “The Postcard Killings.”   The two will co-star in the film adapted from James Patterson and Liza Marklund’s bestseller. The film follows a New York detective whose life is thrown into turmoil when he learns that his daughter and son-in-law have been brutally murdered in London. As he digs into the case, similar crimes are reported across Europe with each killing accompanied by a postcard sent to a local journalist. And last, proving that postcards make connections…a piece of happy news. Hello Clarksville-The Neighborhood Postcard project, kicks off at the Downtown Commons on November 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Participants will create handcrafted postcards with positive messages that will be mailed to random people in the community. Each postcard is a small piece of art to be shared with a neighbor  And that’s the Postcardist News Network for the week of November 5, 2018. Next week, we have Evan Kalish of Postlandia. Evan has visited and photographed more then 9200 post offices across all 50 states in the United States…we’ll hear about those adventures…and much more. Evan is a real expert on postmarks. That’s a wrap. Please subscribe to the show. It really makes a difference to get our message out.   Keep sending postcards. And thanks for listening

This week Frank Roche is joined by four talented artists, each of whom created an original Halloween postcard especially for the show. Plus, each of the artists tells a very spooky story. This is a special show on The Postcardist Podcast -- one you've not heard before.  First up is the artist Beverleyann Wilson. Here's the beautiful witch she created on a postcard. Next, we have an Edward Gorey-inspired demon holding an umbrella by the artist and communication strategist, Jessica Mand. Kitty, from Postcards from the Edge, is an extraordinary photographer who created this spooky postcard from a photo she took of a house she walks by every day.  And finally, we have the filmmaker and artist, Justine Burt, who created a compelling graveyard scene on a postcard. I talk about a contest we created to get a signed set of postcards from these talented artists. Short answer: Subscribe to The Postcardist Podcast. Rate the show and leave a review. Then let me know. On this week's episode of The Throw-In, Will Slattery is joined by Tomás Ó Sé, John Mullane and Herald GAA correspondent Frank Roche to discuss all the weekend's action. The discussion kicks off with yesterday's big game between Mayo and Galway - can Stephen Rochford's men bounce back from another tough defeat? Ó Sé thinks that Mayo played with fear after being reduced to 14 men, and that they will now struggle to make the Super 8s. For Galway, things are far more positive and they have a strong chance to win another Connacht title. Donegal also enjoyed a big win in Ulster, while Will and Frank also recap wins for Carlow, Wicklow and Laois in the Leinster football championship. In hurling, Mullane once again lauds Kilkenny's battling spirit but thinks that Dublin will take huge positives from their narrow defeat to the Cats. He also thinks that Galway are well primed to win another All-Ireland, but that they cannot afford injuries to two key defenders if they want to defend their crown.

Or a card can say, "Why haven't you written?" Or worse: don't write to me again. In this episode, Frank Roche is joined by Lori Feldman. They talk about passive-aggressive postcards from the early 1900s and how there are many similarities to modern communication. Not much has changed...hurt and indirect communication still exist. “This is the biggest test for Jim Gavin’s Dublin. Kerry are coming to wage war on the Dubs,” said Alan Brogan on this week’s Throw-In, Independent.ie’s Championship podcast. The former All Ireland winner was in studio alongside INM GAA correspondents, Frank Roche, Donnchadh Boyle, Conor McKeon and Michael Verney, along with Kerry legend, Tomás Ó’Sé. “Kerry have to go for it, they have to come up with something different and unless they do, they won’t win it,” said Ó’Sé. “Kerry need to brave and not be conservative. The sweeper system doesn’t suit us but I can see them clogging the middle and trying to put pressure on Cluxton’s kick-outs.” But if the Kingdom only leave six in defence will they be vulnerable to Dublin players storming through? All were agreed that Kerry have to spring a surprise and produce some special performances to overcome the reigning champions. And if Dublin do win to make it four straight victories over Kerry, what kind of soul-searching will go on in the Kingdom in the winter months ahead? "Don't forget," warned Brogan. "There's still question marks over Dublin's full-back line one-on-one. For all the talk of Dublin winning this game, Kerry have the forwards that can cause Dublin trouble."

Ep 10: Tipperary must be obliterated from the Mayo mindset

"If Tipperary start the way the did against Galway they could be out of sight of Mayo by half-time," warned David Brady on this week's Throw-In podcast. "Mayo do well against the bigger teams against the likes of Dublin, Tyrone, Kerry, but against the smaller teams they struggle. Mayo love being the underdogs and if experience has taught them anything it's not to let Tipperary get off to a good start. The name Tipperary should be obliterated from the Mayo mindset.” Former Mayo footballer, David Brady, joined INM GAA correspondents, Frank Roche, Donnchadh Boyle and Conor McKeon on Independent.ie’s Championship podcast as they looked ahead to the All Ireland football semi final between Mayo and Tipperary. Despite his caution, Brady and the rest of the panel still believe that Mayo’s firepower and experience will see them reach the final and have another tilt at their Holy Grail in 2016. Also on the show, Roy Curtis and Martin Breheny went head-to-head arguing whether this has been one of the worst football championships in recent years. 2016 v 2010 anyone? And Liam Glynn from BoyleSports was on hand to give some value bets from the Mayo v Tipp clash. For the weekly charity bet, at 7/2, he’s going with Andy Moran to score a goal in the game (anytime), whilst the Throw-In team are going with a 6/1 bet on Cillian O’Connor to be the first goalscorer.

Ep 9: Henry Shefflin admits Kilkenny aren’t as strong - but have Waterford missed their chance?

“It’s great that Kilkenny players have another cut to prove themselves this Saturday,” said Henry Shefflin on this week’s Independent.ie GAA podcast, The Throw-In. Previewing the All Ireland hurling semi final replay between Kilkenny and Waterford with Frank Roche, Michael Verney and Conor McKeon, the Kilkenny legend believes that some of the players let themselves down and will be eager to make up for a below-par performance. “Looking at last Sunday you can see that Kilkenny aren’t as strong as in other years,” he admitted. “But mentally, they are still the best around.” “The one thing that Brian Cody will focus on with his teams is that you never, never give up and you could see that as they came back to get the draw against Waterford.” Looking to the other semi final between Tipperary and Galway, Shefflin is also tipping the Munster champions based on their improved defence and ability to always get their score. “Tipp will always score and if they’re now conceding less, then they have a very good chance.” Turning to football, and in the wake of last week’s sending-offs of Sean Cavanagh and Diarmuid Connolly, Ciaran Whelan and Eugene McGee were also on the show as they discussed whether teams and managers should be bemoaning the targeting of key players. For McGee, this has been a tactic as old as the hills, and teams need to just get on with their own game. For Ciaran Whelan however, the game and the rules have evolved and it’s easier to provoke a player with the aggressor and the victim both getting yellows. “Most of what the managers said in the wake of the games last weekend was rubbish,” said Whelan. “They’re just PR spinners and you should just ignore all their PR talk.” Leon Blanche from BoyleSports joined the Throw-In team to discuss the weekend GAA bets and in the weekly €50 charity bet, recommended a 2/1 double of Galway +4 and Waterford +6 while INM’s Michael Verney was going for two singles of 10-1 draws between Tipp v Galway and Kilkenny v Waterford. “Donegal have the ability to stop Dublin playing,” says Alan Brogan on this week’s GAA Championship podcast, The Throw-In, in association with BoyleSports, on Independent.ie. “They won’t fear Dublin and have the players to cause them trouble. Donegal do strike fear in the Dubs,” he added. Brogan joined INM GAA correspondents, Frank Roche, Donnchadh Boyle, Michael Verney and Conor McKeon, as they previewed the mouth-watering quarter-final double header with Dublin v Donegal and Mayo v Tyrone. The Throw-In team raised the issue of the GAA’s new football Championship proposals and asked whether it was a good opportunity to drive interest and attendances or merely the next stage in the haves v the have-nots? John Mullane was also on the show to discuss Waterford’s chances against Kilkenny – and he believes the Deise can spring a surprise. Martin Breheny and Roy Curtis went head-to-head on the issue for play and Liam Glynn from BoyleSports was on hand to give some value bets for the weekend action. In the weekly charity bet, he was offering 11/1 on a treble of Mayo, Donegal +5 & Waterford +5 while the Throw-In team’s treble was Mayo, Kilkenny -4, Donegal +6.

Will this be the end of the road for Tipp and Clare as they face the heavyweights of Kerry and Galway or can history be made by the minnows? How crazy is the Championship structure when you look at the different paths Donegal and Kerry have taken to progress so far? And with the GAA’s new deal with the GPA this week, is pay-for-play looming? That’s all on this week’s GAA Championship podcast, the Throw-In, in association with BoyleSports. Tomás Ó’Sé joined INM GAA correspondents Frank Roche, Conor McKeon and Donnchadh Boyle as they discussed Kerry’s eye on Dublin, how and why Galway have had a brain transplant and ask if Cork can spring a surprise against Donegal. Liam Glynn was on hand with some value bets for the weekend action and in his charity bet has gone for an 8/1 treble of Galway -4, Clare +10 and Cork +1, while the Throw-In panel went for a 6/1 treble of Donegal -2, Galway -2 and Kerry -9.

On this week’s GAA Championship podcast, The Throw-In, in association with BoyleSports, Alan Brogan joined the team as they looked ahead to three provincial football finals. The Dubs are defending their Leinster title against Westmeath and while Brogan couldn’t see a way past Dublin, he still cautioned that the Dubs can’t think it will be easy either. “Dublin have just too much talent but they can’t let any complacency set in against Westmeath,” he told presenter Frank Roche, who was also joined by INM GAA Correspondents, Michael Verney, Donnchadh Boyle, and Conor McKeon. As to how Westmeath would take on Dublin, the question was whether they should have a go or sit back and contain what they concede. Alan Brogan though was clear how they should approach it. “Tom Cribben should allow his Westmeath players to express themselves and try and come out and attack,” he said. “Dublin will probably only have one extra man in the back so there will be opportunities for Westmeath’s forwards.”

“Massive performances are needed from Tipp’s half-forwards and midfield to get them over the line against Waterford,” said Tipp legend, Eoin Kelly, on this week’s Throw-In podcast, in association with BoyleSports. While Kelly acknowledged Waterford would make it a closer game than recent Munster final clashes between the teams, he still believed that now was the time for the Tipp players to push on for silverware, just as Kilkenny have done. For the hurling qualifiers with Cork v Wexford and Clare v Limerick, the Throw-In panel of Frank Roche, Donnchadh Boyle, Conor McKeon and Michael Verney discussed whether managerial positions would be on the line with defeats on Saturday. In football, David Brady previewed the Connacht football final tipping Roscommon to do the business over Galway while he also called on the Mayo players to lift their game against Fermanagh or else it was time for changes in the starting line-up. For this week’s €50 charity bet, BoyleSports Leon Blanche, opted for a treble of Tipp, Meath and Galway at 11/2 while The Throw-In team hoped to beat the bookie with their 11/2 double of Offaly and Clare.
