Frenette's love of music started at the age of 5 while playing the bongos and listening to records with his parents. Artists like Perez Perado, Tito Puente, Herb Albert, Johnny Cash and Tom Jones were constantly spinning on the record player. By the age of 10, Matt was learning his rudiments in a marching and concert band. Some of Matt's early influences include Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Michael Shrieve, Danny Seraphine,Billy Cobham, and later influences include Manu Katche, Steve Gadd, and Richard Bailey. Frenette is a founding member of Streetheart and his legacy as the other half of one of rock's greatest rhythm sections is still a part of Canadian rock legend. Matt's fierce approach to every song and powerful grooves he created were a big part of the musical foundation that Streetheart built their unmistakable sound on in the early days. In 1979 Matthew left Streetheart to join Paul Dean's new band Loverboy. Originally, Matt Frenette played drums for a side-project band, Headpins while Bernie Aubin played drums for a fellow Vancouver band, the soon to be renamed Loverboy. But within months, Aubin and Frenette swapped bands, where each continues to play to the present Alongside fellow Loverboy founding members Mike Reno, Paul Dean, Doug Johnson, with Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve, Matt Frenette has been "Working for the Weekend" since forming in Calgary, Alberta over 36 years ago. Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling "Get Lucky." In 1982, as a member of Loverboy, Frenette went on to win a "still-record" six Juno awards. Matt's solid groove, versatile musicality and his visually exciting performance has created a demand for his appearance in many different artists' recordings, videos and tours, such as: Tom Cochrane, Bryan Adams, Kim Mitchell, Colin James and many other talented musicians.   Some Things That Came Up:  -1:30 Rich saw Matt with Loverboy at The El Paso Coliseum, 1985!  -3:00 Matt broke through the bass drum head! Imagine growing up in a little town in New Jersey, sharing Beatles albums with your older sister while your Mom is listening to Frank Sinatra and Herb Albert all the time. You find your place in the world being “the music guy” at school. Fold that into time working at the College radio station and then an entry level job at an upstart indie label called IRS Records where your first day on the job the Go Go's debut album hits #1 on the Album Chart. Later that week the Go Go's play Madison Square Garden. If this sounds at all familiar, then you're most likely this week's guest, Keith Altomare. Keith spent a good amount of time at IRS Records (owned by uber Manager Miles Copeland) in New York City working as the label's College Rep. His efforts helped propel REM's “Murmur” to being Number One on the College Radio charts. When IRS opened an office in Chicago, Keith opened up that territory before moving on to Los Angeles working as IRS National Sales Director. It was in the aisles of the Sunset Store where he met his wife Betsy who was then the Night Manager at Tower Records Sunset. In 1989 Keith Altomare moved over to Rhino Records where he started as National Sales Director and then eventually became the VP of Sales working with Tower Records as one of the primary accounts because “They were awesome people who were there because of the music.” Keith also tells us about working with Rhino Records legend Gary Stewart who passed away in 2019. Join us for an informative conversation with a long time friend of Tower Records, Keith Altomare.

I Love To Support Great Talent! Some years ago I heard from one of my long time favorite pals Jerrey Stanley in New Jersey, that his daughter was a superstar singing talent and would I consider having her on my show. Of course. I've always loved to help shine a deserving light on someone when I'm able to with my show.  Surprise surprise this was no favor. Meeting Brynn Stanley back then and giving the world a chance to listen to her voice and talent was a treat!  I knew the kid had star power. I like to joke that I was the first to discover her.  (Actually I am a kind of lucky charm for people who've never done media before, as those who have come on my show as their very first media debut, often go on to bigger and more fabulous things.) And I was right. I know how to pick em! Lol Get a load of Brynn Stanley now. Her original Christmas Song 'Selfie With Santa' is  a WINNER! As is Brynn.  Brynn Stanley has been charming audiences on both coasts, from New Jersey to Los Angeles. She has one of those really smooth, silky voices. "Audiences and critics have raved about her voice, a unique blend of classic vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee with modern stars like Norah Jones and Diana Krall. Her style has been described as “warm, classic, timeless, inspiring and sincere”.  Brynn's been performing in and around New York and Los Angeles with her jazz trio at the famous Chateau Marmot in Hollywood, CA, Vitello's Jazz and Supper Club, Herb Albert's Vibrato's and Shanghai Jazz (voted “one of the top 100 great jazz clubs in the world”). While developing a reputation as a soulful jazz singer with an enthusiasm to please audiences of any age, Brynn continues to garner strong reviews from press, band mates, bandleaders and concert promoters.  Enjoy meeting Brynn Stanley in this warm podcast conversation from The Debbie Nigro show and listen to her 'Selfie With Santa'.  I sense you'll soon be a fan.

Considered a pioneer in Hip-Hop bass playing and in the use of bass effects, alternate tunings and extended hand techniques, Doug's mastery of the bass is unparalled. As one of the most versatile session and touring bassists in the industry, Doug moves readily from pop and mainstream rock to hip-hop, funk, metal, symphonic metal, reggae, R&B, electronic, world and experimental music. Doug Wimbish is probably best known as the cutting edge lead bassist in the Grammy Award-winning hard rock band Living Colour, but looking beyond the obvious, one quickly sees that Doug's influence and impact on the world's musical culture is much more vast and significant than often written or realized.  Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's “The Message”, listed by Rollingstone.com as the #1 Greatest Hip Hop Song of all time, featured Doug's bass lines as do many other Sugarhill Records classics including “Apache”, “8th Wonder” and “White Lines”. Wimbish wrote the bass line on The Sequence's “Funk You Up”. To get an idea of the respect Doug has earned within the music industry, consider that in one week in 1991, Doug received personal phone calls from Living Colour, Bruce Springsteen and Seal, all asking him to work with them. Doug made the decision to work with Living Colour and joined the band, becoming its permanent bassist. This time are covering a play that made a splash when it premiered off-Broadway in April 1968. The Mart Crowley story, The Boys in the Band, revolved around several gay men as they navigate life pre-Stonewall New York City. It went on to play over 1000 performances (always off-Broadway because that is how Edward Albee wanted it) and was first adapted into a film directed by William Friedkin. Friedkin, who needed a hit at the time, hired the entire cast for the film and created a work that is remembered for being a milestone in queer cinema. Set in an apartment in Manhattan, a group of homosexual men gathers ostensibly to celebrate the birthday of one of their friends. Instead, the event becomes a tightly wound confrontation between the haves and have-nots. The beautiful and those that live a lie. It's at times off-putting, verbose, profane, funny, and sad. The original (1970) cast lost many members to AIDS in the 80s & 90s which adds to the melancholy of a current viewing. The 2020 Netflix version features an all-openly gay cast including Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, and Charlie Carver who play the same characters set in 1968 but with an updated script by Crowley and Ned Martel. We are deeply honoured to welcome Sergio Mendes as the final guest of the first series of our next guest on Love You Live! Mendes has continued to record, tour, evolve and change through the seven decades he has been active in music: a true musical survivor working with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu and many many more. Mendes has firmly established himself as one of the most influential artists of all time. In Love You Live, Sergio talks about the experience of leaving Brazil, meeting and signing to Herb Albert and A&M, international fame in the wake of his huge hit mas que nada, Harrison Ford designing and constructing his recording studio and who was the real founder of Bossa Nova… Love you live is produced by Hannah Blake at Entale.

You know what Top 40 radio is. But…think about it for a second. Top 40 what? Songs? Albums? Bands? And top for who? Once you get started, the supposedly homogenous “mainstream” at the center of American listening is actually pretty complicated. To help us explore the past of pop, we talk with Eric Weisbard, music critic and professor of American Studies, whose book “Top 40 Democracy: The Rival Mainstreams of American Music” examines how radio formats and the artists that populated them helped make modern music. We go from the bizarre pan-ethnic brass band sounds of Herb Albert to the Cleveland station that invented classic rock—with a stop along the way for some Dolly. Subscribe to our newsletter! The deeper you dive, the more you explore. And if you're looking for buried treasure, look no further than the extended catalogues of the artists you already know, and you will fall in love with what John calls “Yacht Jazz.” You know the hits by Chuck Mangione, Herb Albert and George Benson, but let's go exploring out of the main, and into the deep (cuts): What is “Yacht Jazz,” and how does it relate to Yacht Rock? What, specifically, does “Yacht Jazz” have in common with Yacht Rock? Who were the contemporaries, and just how many different types of record did they play on? What is “Yacht R&B,” and is it the same as “Yacht Soul?” Tom calls it “Yacht Pop,” John calls it “AC Gold.” You should call it a friend. Is there really such a thing as “Yacht Country?” We neglect to mention it, but isn't Harry Chapin, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot, a lot of America, Jim Croce, etc., really “Yacht Folk,” and not really Yacht Rock at all? D-Sides, Orphans, and Oddities

Church of Scientology - We Stand Tall (1990) Mungo Jerry - We're OK (1977)  Spanky and Our Gang - I'd Like To Get To Know You (1968) Alan Thicke - That Boston Dandy (1969) THAT Alan Thicke. There are three of these songs that I can find, Alan Thicke fellating Bobby Orr on 45. Must have been some paycheck, eh. I mean, he was great and all, but he must have been embarrassed. I'm embarrassed for him.  Aerosmith - Seasons of Wither (1974) Alice Cooper (with Marcella Detroit) Millie and Billie (1978) Eric Burdon & The Animals - All Is One (1967) Andy Williams - Wichita Lineman (1969)  Paul Kantner, Grace Slick & Paul Freiberg - Your Mind Has Left Your Body (1973) Barry McGuire & the Doctor - South of The Border (1971) From PopMatters:  McGuire and Hord got together as a duo and put out one album in late 1970, appropriately entitled Barry and the Doctor. They were joined by a top-notch group of side musicians including the Byrd's Chris Hillman, the Eagles' Bernie Leadon, the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow, Dillard and Clark's Byron Berline, and even an uncredited Herb Albert. The album had a loose, bluesy feel and a folkie back to the land sentimentality. It was a critical success and a commercial failure. McGuire reported that the album's recording was fueled by massive amounts of cocaine and resultant unpredictable behavior. It was McGuire's last secular album before becoming a born-again Christian. Barry and the Doctor has since become a cult classic whose unavailability enhanced its reputation as one of the great lost albums of the era. It's recently been re-released. The question then becomes, does the actual music live up to its hype? The answer is "yes", but it is a very good record, not a great one. The record has a pleasant instrumental vibe and offers innocent messages. The lyrics are a bit corny, generally extolling life in the country versus the city as a heavy environmental message—a common trope of California tunes from the period (just ask Canned Heat, Jesse Colin Young, etc.). Despite the reported coke use, Hord displays his guitar chops by playing smoothly, and McGuire's 12-string beautifully rings out the riffs. The material never sounds rushed. Instead, it flows and often folds intricately upon itself. One would presume the artists smoked pot or took acid instead of snorting cocaine because of the material's psychedelic sensibility. Beach Boys - Rollin' Up To Heaven (1975)  Black Oak Arkansas - Hot & Nasty (1971) Bruford - Back To The Beginning (1978) Chevy Chase - Rapper's Plight (1980) Chris Knight & Maureen McCormick - There Is Nothing More To Say (1973) Completely new and utterly meaningless lyrics based on the same title by The Millennium. Colin Bluntstone - I Don't Believe In Miracles (1972) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Feelin' Blue (1969)  Dean Martin - By The Time I Get To Phoenix (1969) Frank Sinatra - I Sing The Songs (1978) "I Write The Songs" rewritten for the voice of god.  Frank Zappa - Andy (1980)  Gabe Kaplan - Up Your Nose (With A Rubber Hose) (1977) Co-written by Greg Prestopino. He has written songs for the likes of Celine Dion ("Show Some Emotion"), Natalie Cole ("Wild Women Do"), Puff Daddy ("Can't Nobody Hold Me Down"), Aaron Neville ("Beautiful Night"), Bette Midler ("Let Me Drive"), Jennifer Love Hewitt ("In Another Life") and Matthew Wilder ("Break My Stride"). Aaron Carter and Unique ll are also among the many artists who have recorded his songs. And here he is.  Genesis - Down And Out (1979)

Composing for Frank Sinatra and signing with his publishing company (including a collaboration with Sammy Cahn). Producing at the famed Gold Star Studios and collaborating with the "wrecking crew" of session musicians (such as Leon Russell). Songwriter/producer/artist Johnny Walsh's fantastic one-off single for Columbia, "The End," composed by Ian Whitcomb. Jamie And The Jury (a group that recorded for a few labels) and their catchy 45, "This Too Shall Pass." Larry Marks' forced move from Columbia to A&M and signing the Merry-Go-Round. The generosity and culture of Herb Albert & Jerry Moss. Producing Emitt Rhodes & The Merry-Go-Round recordings such as "She Laughed Loud" and "Missing You" (which he composed). Studio aggregation The Garden Club's "Little Girl Lost-And-Found" (which featured songwriter Ruthann Friedman as vocalist). The Merry-Go-Round's lack of national success. Producing Southern California's West Coast Branch for their A&M release, "Colors Of My Life." Working with Phil Ochs and producing his Pleasures Of The Harbor album (selections of which are presented in rare mono mixes), which represented a stylistic shift for the singer-songwriter. Working at A&M studios and mastering with Bernie Grundman. Phil's fascination with Lenny Bruce. Larry Mark's own single on A&M: "L.A. Break Down (And Take Me In)." Producing the Flying Burrito Brothers seminal debut album with engineer Henry Lewy (and the fuzz pedal steel sound of Sneaky Pete). A reunion with Gene Clark and producing the albums of Dilllard & Clark and the single "Why Not Your Baby."
