Interview by Kris PetersDepressive black metal outfit GHOST BATH have emerged from beyond the veil with their new album, Rose Thorn Necklace, set to be released on May 9 via Nuclear Blast Records. The band, in their 12th year of existence, are not in the business of softening the edges. Rather, the frontman (Nameless aka Dennis Mikula) is leaning more toward his antisocial traits, serrated like a rusty knife yet beautifully honed over years of toil.HEAVY caught up with Nameless this week to get the rundown on what to expect, and start by asking how he is feeling with the release date approaching."You know, I don't really like releasing just singles," he measured. "I just want the whole album out for people to check out. But it's coming up, so I am excited to get it out there and start touring on it."He raises a good point with the release of singles, because although snippets of an album work for the most part, for band's like Ghost Bath who create a more immersive musical experience, the effects can be just the opposite."I mean, I get why it's done," he answered, "it builds hype and people will hear the single then say oh, I want to hear the whole album now, so it makes sense, but personally, I don't like to listen to just one song by a band."We ask Nameless what he was going for musically with Rose Thorn Necklace, to which he replied."Musically, I was going for my own take on depressive black metal, but more in a vein where it's like… I don't know… a little bit dancy in parts but still dark. I always try to do a contrast between beauty but with the heaviness, and that usually comes from the more melodic, pretty guitar parts contrasted with the vocals either being high-pitched shrieks or low growls. I like to play with contrast a lot, and that's kind of what I was going for."In the full interview, Nameless further discussed Rose Thorn Necklace, emphasizing its representation of his personal interpretation of depressive black metal through a blend of melodic and heavy elements. He expressed a preference for listeners to engage with the entire album rather than individual singles, as each track plays a vital role in the overall emotional experience. This is an interview which might have been the longest in the making. Roughly a year ago, Ghost Bath released their latest album Self Loather (review here) and we were really taken with it. Therefore we are more than happy that we now finally got the chance to talk with one of the guys behind the project to talk a lot of things - including the way the music works for them and is created in a way that at least the interviewer would not have imagined! By definition, a ‘ghost bath' is a specific way of taking one's own life, with the remaining body being drowned and thus looking like a ghost. However, when talking with a member of one of the American DSBM bands, namely Ghost Bath, it would be much too easy to only focus on that topic, as Tim has much more to talk about. Thus we touched upon which kind of music he likes to listen to, how Self-Loather is the end of a trilogy and how much of it was written and created during the pandemic. Among other things!

Black metallers Ghost Bath are proving the doubters wrong with their stunning new album, Self Loather which will be released on 19th November via Nuclear Blast. Frontman Dennis Mikula was available to share his thoughts in the album, Ghost Bath's comparisons to Deafheaven, and the time he trolled a Vice/ Noisey contributor who assumed the group were from Chongqing, China!

Rising from relative obscurity, black metal outfit Ghost Bath have resurfaced with a fierce new album, Self Loather, ready to wreak havoc on October 29.After gaining more traction over the course of three albums and an EP, Ghost bath close out the trilogy of tragedy, ecstasy and dread/hatred which started with Moonlover in 2015 and worked through Starmourner in 2017 before coming to a conclusion here.Founding member and vocalist Dennis Mikula joined HEAVY to chat about the album."This album is the first album we wrote entirely as a band,” he revealed, “moving from sort of a solo project of mine toa full band writing process where everyone chipped in and put their own voice in. It still has my voice and still sounds like Ghost Bath but you're gonna hear some new stuff in this; a little bit more complex time signatures and riffs, a little bit more death metal influence both in the guitar riffs and my vocals. It's also the first album where I've written lyrics instead of just doing a high pitch scream that I did with all the previous stuff with the lyrics. This one I do a variety of stuff. I've done more traditional black metal vocals I do a bit lower death metal influenced vocal and then I still do the high-pitched wails as well. I use those more as an accent instead of the main vocal leads on this one.
