Your pregnancy and birth experience have a profound impact on your postpartum recovery, as well as your ongoing mental health and wellbeing. In this episode, expert guest Dr. Perri Dyson, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, joins hosts Larissa and Kath to discuss a critical issue highlighted in the recent NSW government report on birth trauma. While the report is extensive, we'll focus on one key theme: informed consent. This is an important topic for us at Homb—our mission is to reduce the incidence of postnatal depression and anxiety (PNDA), and we know that women who experience traumatic births are at higher risk for both postnatal depression (PPD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In fact, 1 in 4 women report experiencing PTSD symptoms after birth, and 1 in 16 meet the full criteria for PTSD. In this episode, we unpack some of the key recommendations from the report aimed at reducing birth trauma and its long-term impact. https://ogcg.com.au/dr-perri-dyson/

Today, we're honored to host a distinguished guest, a board-certified obstetrician gynecologist with a background in maternal fetal medicine, whose journey through the medical field has been nothing short of extraordinary.   In this episode, our guest shares insights from a career marked by a relentless pursuit of truth, especially in light of the tumultuous events surrounding public health strategies during recent global crises. We'll explore how personal experiences, influenced by historical figures like Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, have shaped his approach to medicine, emphasizing the importance of standing firm against mainstream narratives when patient safety is at stake.   Our discussion will take a critical look at how health policies, driven by a complex web of government, pharmaceutical, and medical organizations, have impacted the most vulnerable among us. We'll tackle the uncomfortable truths about medical ethics, the silence of influential societal groups, and the personal sacrifices made by those who speak out against the status quo.   This episode promises to be a beacon of awareness, urging us all to question, to learn, and to remember the importance of integrity in the face of systemic challenges. Why abortion is back on the national agenda

Abortion is back in the headlines in Australia. In South Australia overnight parliament narrowly rejected a bill that would have forced women seeking a late term abortion to instead be induced into labour. And in Queensland, Opposition Leader David Crisafulli has refused to say whether his MPs would get a conscience vote on abortion laws, if he wins next week's election. This renewed debate in Australia is a quiet echo of the loud roar over in the United States, where abortion will be a deciding factor for many in next month's presidential election. So why have the politics of abortion suddenly had a resurgence in this country?  In this episode, Bension Siebert speaks to South Australian woman Tayla-Jane Jackson, who needed a late term abortion, about her personal experience. We also hear a powerful argument from Dr Nisha Khot – Vice President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists – on why women need access to abortion care at any stage of a pregnancy, and her reflections on the debate that seems to be back in Australia.  Lifeline 13 11 14 Follow The Briefing:TikTok: @listnrnewsroomInstagram: @listnrnewsroom @thebriefingpodcast YouTube: @LiSTNRnewsroomFacebook: @LiSTNR NewsroomSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textOn this episode of the CMAJ Podcast, Dr. Blair Bigham and Dr. Mojola Omole explore effective ways to manage pain during intrauterine device (IUD) insertions. They also address a broader issue: how women's pain is often neglected during gynecologic procedures, and the failure of physicians to adequately seek consent. They are joined by Dr. Kristina Arion, an obstetrician and gynecologist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and Dr. Nadia Von Benzon, a lecturer and social geographer at Lancaster University. The episode begins with Dr. Arion discussing the CMAJ article she co-authored, which outlines strategies for better management of pain during IUD insertions. She explains that the IUD is recommended as the first-line therapy for birth control and period management by the Canadian Pediatric Society and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. Dr. Arion highlights how patient anxiety, lack of sedation options, and inconsistent practices contribute to unnecessary pain. Her key advice to doctors: listen to patients, explain each step of the procedure, and provide adequate pain management options.Dr. Von Benzon broadens the discussion beyond IUD pain management to the neglect of women's pain and autonomy during other gynecologic and obstetrical procedures. Her research article "My doctor just called me a good girl, and I died a bit inside: From everyday misogyny to obstetric violence in UK fertility and maternity services," illustrates how women's pain is frequently dismissed and their consent overlooked. She discusses the long-term impact of these practices, with some women opting out of future pregnancies due to trauma. She advises healthcare professionals to clearly explain procedures, seek consent, and prioritize patient comfort and autonomy.Dr. Omole and Dr. Bigham reflect on how patriarchal structures and time constraints within healthcare systems often lead to the failure to prioritize women's pain and autonomy. The episode closes with a powerful call for healthcare providers to take the time to listen to their patients, ask questions, and ensure that consent and comfort are prioritized at every stage of care. For more information from our sponsor, go to Rainbow Health Ontario.Join us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. The high level of efficacy and added benefits, like improving users' periods, make it appealing to doctors to recommend for patients of all ages. But there's a big catch – getting it put in can be excruciating for some patients.Last week, the Center for Disease Control in the United States issued a guidance recommending healthcare providers counsel patients on their pain management options before the procedure. In 10–20 % of cases, no cause is found. Women starting their families at an older age is one of the most common explanations for infertility today. It is vital that those facing infertility issues empower themselves by having the necessary conversation about fertility treatment with their partner and doctor, because there are interventions if treatment is sought sooner rather than later. Professor Dame Lesley Regan is the Government's first Women's Health Ambassador for England. She is one of the main drivers behind the upcoming Women's Health Strategy which aims to tackle the gender health gap and improve services for women. As a former president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists – only the second woman to hold that post in its 94-year history – she shone a light on historically taboo subjects from period problems and contraception to the menopause. Lesley was born in London in 1956. When she was seven she told her father that she wanted to be a doctor and although the sciences weren't her strongest subjects at school, she won a place at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School in London in 1975. In 1991 she was appointed a senior lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St Mary's Hospital in London and consultant at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The following year she set up the Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic at St Mary's which is the largest miscarriage referral service in the world. In 2020 she was appointed a DBE for services to women's healthcare. DISC ONE: Mr Bojangles – Nina Simone DISC TWO: Symphony No. 5 in C Sharp.
