Aside from having an excellent product, one of the best ways to foster adoption is by building community support early on. One company that has reaped the rewards of taking this approach, is Rasa, an open-source, natural language understanding framework that helps companies build mission-critical contextual assistants, and its co-founder and CTO, Alan Nichol, joins us today. We kick this episode off by learning more about Rasa’s mission to become the no-brainer technology for building conversational AI. They are achieving this through their relentless commitment to community, developer empowerment, and by what Alan calls a ‘no fairy-dust attitude.’ Building conversational AI is not easy, which is why Rasa is inviting developers along for the journey. From there, we move onto why Alan believes it’s important to get products in front of users at soon as you can. Rather than waiting for full development, if you get what you can into people’s hands and let them use it, the feedback will be much richer, culminating in a better outcome. We then move into discussing the benefits of open-source. There are almost an infinite number of advantages according to Alan, from increased innovation surface area to the ability to squeeze out extra performance. However, the financial realities are important, and we discuss how Rasa’s enterprise products fulfill these needs. We round the show off by diving into the five levels of conversational AI and where we currently are, why intents are hindering the scalability of these products, and what’s in the pipeline for Rasa. As the voice industry continues to grow in leaps and bounds, conversational components stand out as a key development moving forward. What are these conversational components? Simply put, they are modular blocks of customizable, reusable conversational services, accessible via APIs that can fit together in a myriad of ways to form larger, conversational flows. Conversational Components, known as CoCo are leading the charge with this modular-based component approach. In this episode, Yaki Dunietz, the company's CEO, who has been working in conversational AI for more than 20 years, and Jason Gilbert, lead conversation designer at CoCo, who has designed text-to-voice experiences across a range of conversational channels, join us to share more about the company and its unique approach to chatbots. We kick the show off by diving into CoCo’s service as a hub and directory for conversational components. We learn about how the components are accessed, vendor publishing, and how searches on the platform work. From there, we move onto how the bots handle queries, both in and out of context. It is vitally important for these bots to engage in small talk, which requires a few thousand smaller bots all to fire at the same time. Through increasing access, CoCo hopes to encourage collaboration and in doing so, propel developments in the space forward. We round off the show by learning more about Yaki and Jason’s respective backgrounds and how it shaped their thinking, what it takes to build a bot’s personality, and what the future has in store for CoCo.Highlights● Available at http://bit.ly/voicetechpodcast-ep070 Quotes from the show[07:22] The component resides on the platform[25:03] Good chatbots, and even good digital assistants, have personality[43:16] Forging personality and character, creating a chatbot experience, is an artformLinks to clickManning books

No mask? No problem. Based on attendee pushback, a coronavirus test at the door will be the only health safety measure for this business event. Do attendees want to wear masks and keep their distance when meetings resume, or will such practices detract too much from the experience of live events? That’s a question Bradley Metrock, CEO of Nashville-based Score Publishing, has been grappling with for months. His team painstakingly created Project Voice Series Protocols that would include COVID-19 testing, daily temperature checks and health monitoring. “It was really hardcore,” says Metrock. “We said there’s going to be masks, distancing, no food, no swag.” The 420-person capacity of the conference center at Harvard Medical School would be cut down to 200 with appropriately distanced room setups. But two factors upended that plan: Harvard will likely remain closed until Labor Day, and attendees didn’t want to come to an event so mired in health safety measures. Within days, a completely different plan was hatched. The Voice of Healthcare Summit, Special Edition, will be a one-day event at the Boston Winery on Aug. 5, 2020, with a projected 125 to 150 participants. The only health protocol will be a COVID-19 test at registration. Those who test positive will be sent home with a refund; those negative will enjoy a “halfway normal” event, said Metrock. We spoke with Metrock on May 15 about the factors that drove his decision, and how he expects to pull it off.

His expertise focuses on technology and healthcare delivery.Reid Maclellan is a physician and adjunct professor at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital. He’s also an instructor of surgery at Harvard Medical School as well as the founder and CEO of Asclepius, an artificial intelligence company with the mission to restore the care in healthcare and improve quality of life for patients and physicians. Key Points from the Discussion!Conversations at the Voice of Healthcare Summit around building applicable tools, ethics and privacy, and expanding tech for voice-first.Key Takeaways from the SummitCompared to the summit in 2018, the number of people doing incredible things in the voice space and healthcare more than doubled. This is evidence that there is a lot of continuously increasing interest. The breadth of different speakers who were representing so many organizations also increased. There were so many different topics in voice and healthcare. We are going to see a skyrocket in wonderful applications that are going to assist physicians and patients in healthcare.Tangible Builds for VoiceThere’s been excellent research in the integration of voice technology into EMRs.The idea of vocal biomarkers is a fascinating area with great potential. There are different voice applications, like from the Mayo Clinic, which has been growing their applications beyond just being informational skills to integrating patient care with voice technology.Beyond Pilot Projects2019 has been called the year of the pilot. Most revolutionary applications that could impact healthcare on a massive scale are still in pilot stage. Some of the organizations, hospitals, and clinicians that have their own pilot projects that they want to grow will need to hasten their efforts in coming out with tangible tools, because some of the larger firms with more capital will start introducing voice tools and interactive features that may be a little more advanced. One of the biggest barriers to launching health-oriented voice applications at scale has been the protection of users’ privacy. With the recent HIPAA Compliance for Alexa for certain institutions, we are going to see some of the healthcare applications come online. The Mayo Clinic has been giving patients a lot of information through voice applications.AI in GeneralA user can converse with an AI type bot in different ways.AI is not intelligent until the creator makes it that way. That’s why a lot of AI was originally formed based off of image pattern recognition because it was easy to give the computer a bunch of data (all the same images), and then a few that were different, for it to learn. With the advent of NLP (Natural Language Processing), AI can understand conversations and words. There will be a cultural change for physicians to really adopt conversational AI.Notable Speakers at the SummitNathan Treloar of Orbita is a heavyweight boxer in the voice first world. Orbita has tools that are tangible and being used in the market. They’ve been able to achieve great milestones.Stuart Patterson of LifePod opened people’s eyes in as far as what can be done in home health, keeping families informed about loved ones who are ill, care for the elderly, and so much more.Punit Soni of Suki talked about the concept of being able to utilize voice while you’re hands-on with the patient and not being distracted by the keyboard and screen.Bianca Phillips of e-Health Consultants talked about the ethics and law of voice technology in health.Other interesting speakers included Michael Antaran of CARROT Pass, Henry O'Connell of Canary Speech, Audrey Arbeeny of Audiobrain, and others.Voice as a Potential Vital SignThere’s a study that was done by Mayo Clinic and BeyondVerbal to look at patients who were going in for a coronary angiogram and they had those patients read different statements. They then looked at the outcomes of the coronary angiograms and found a statistically significant correlation between the way someone speaks and the risk of coronary heart disease. They also did a study to look at people with congestive heart failure. They followed those people over time and had them read or describe an experience. In this episode, Teri welcomes Bradley Metrock, the CEO of Score Publishing and the creator of VoiceFirst.FM, the leading podcast network covering everything about voice technologyBradley is the guy behind some of the best voice technology events out there in all different sectors. The flagship event that he puts on is Project Voice, and he also puts on many voice events covering many different verticals and industry sectors which include healthcare.Key points from Bradley! The Voice of Healthcare Summit 2018 and 2019, and some of the things that he has observed over the last year with regards to the evolution of voice technology particularly in the healthcare sector.Amazon Alexa’s HIPAA Compliance and how it will affect Amazon in both the short and long term.Developing an Event Around Healthcare and VoiceThe genesis of the Voice of Healthcare Summit started with the Voice of Healthcare Podcast which he co-created with Dr. Matt Cybulsky. They needed an in-person gathering of all the people interested in voice technology and AI, and its intersection with modern healthcare. The perfect venue for it was Harvard Medical School. They piloted the event in 2018 and it went very well. They had very qualified attendees and fantastic speakers. The Current Happenings in Healthcare and VoiceWe have sort of reached a saturation point especially for the early adopters of voice technology. There’s a prevailing thought on what the next voice technology that will carry us forward will be.There are still plenty of people who are yet to interact with computers by voice. More people are still discovering what voice technology can do for them that other interfaces cannot. It feels like the industry is plateauing, but several companies are making major moves.Samsung came out with a number of developer tools and Bixby 2.0. Apple hired some people to get more serious on improving Siri. Microsoft’s decision to partner with Amazon Alexa had a number of positive implications for their business.Different companies are diving into voice strictly into specific verticals. He predicts that there will be some sort of killer voice app in healthcare that will open up people’s eyes to the potential of what voice can do for people everywhere. Looking at the conference program at the Voice of Healthcare Summit 2019, one company called Canary Speech is well-funded and has top-notch computer scientists involved. They use voice to impact healthcare by analyzing the sound waves in someone’s voice, and measuring them against the person’s baseline and other benchmarks that they have.Other companies that will talk about their great voice apps include CARROT Pass, The Mayo Clinic, Orbita, Lifepod, Triad Health A.I. (They have a very different approach using their voice platform to help people who have been diagnosed with Parkinsons), Transform9, and many more.Innovation in Voice for Healthcare Versus Other VerticalsThe amount of innovation taking place in other verticals is huge but the attention on them by their respective sectors is different. For example, in the hospitality sector, based on the Voice of Hospitality Summit, there is a lot of innovation going on but there is very little attention on that from the hospitality market. The adoption of those technologies is very slow. From the Voice of the Car Summit, there’s plenty of innovation going on in voice technology for cars, but the attention from the market is slightly less than in healthcare or hospitality.Amazon Alexa’s HIPAA ComplianceIt brings things to a whole new level. The number of devices being sold is something that can’t be ignored. The fact that Amazon would go to the trouble of getting Alexa to be HIPAA Compliant sends a signal that voice and AI can deeply impact healthcare positively.Links and Resources in this EpisodeVoice of Healthcare Summit 2019Voice Summit 2019 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Siri has made some strides but Apple is still flailing about at the end of 2018. New consumer habits are being formed on a daily basis and they don’t involve the Apple ecosystem, but instead involve the Amazon Alexa and Google ecosystem.Samsung rolled out their new developer tools and showed an entirely new paradigm for how development on a voice assistant will work for Bixby. This means Samsung is going to be fertile ground for third-party developers. They’re going to be a healthy competitor for Amazon and Google.Google Duplex came out over the not summer and it was so advanced that it shocked the market. It is more advanced in several significant ways than what Alexa can do at the moment.Amazon has had a good year. They have sold a huge amount of devices and they have had a steady drum beat of new features that have come out over the course of the year. They have entered into many new locations, not just the US.Research shows the use of voice assistants and smart speakers has reduced usage of the smartphone.Prediction: By December 2019, Samsung will be just as much a part of the conversion with activity around voice assistants like third party development and general growth, as Amazon and Google.Samsung is about to take a big leap. If they continue with their efforts, they are poised to challenge both Amazon and Google. There are features of the Samsung voice assistant ecosystem that don’t exist on the Alexa and Google Assistant ecosystems.Amazon has a huge lead, a huge install base for Echo devices, a hug developer community, and a huge community of evangelists. The Alexa ConferenceIt is the worldwide gathering of the Alexa development community.2019 is the 3rd year it’s taking place. In this episode, Teri welcomes Dr. Matt Cybulsky, behavioural economist, and founder and chief consultant of Ionia Behavioral Insights, to talk about behavioural changes and voice first technology, voice first privacy issues, Alexa applications within the Canadian health care system, and the power of motivating human behaviours with emotions routed in voice first technology.Welcome Dr. Matt Cybulsky!Matt Cybulsky is a psychologist and behavioural economist, and he has studied persuasion and influence extensively. He now offers his expertise to organizations to help guide behavioural changes through technology and innovation, particularly in the government and healthcare delivery sectors. While blending psychology, decision economics, and social influence to understand human decision-making, he designs choices that impact key decisions in the marketplace. Matt is a sought-after speaker regarding behavioural changes, insights, and healthcare. It was a pleasure having Dr. Cybulsky on the podcast and we covered a lot of ground. Below you will see a summary of what we discussed. How can Voice First Technology Help to Change Behaviours? From the Patient PerspectiveVoice first technology has created a mechanism whereby a patient can “talk” to a health care provider and the provider can “talk” to a patient/client.Voice first technology allows avenues for a healthcare provider to support the patient (to encourage healthy behaviours, for example).Voice technology can bridge the time that a patient is not actually communicating with their doctor, but still allow for communication. The continuity of this communication replaces the hours out of the year that the patient is not in the presence of their physician.Voice is incredibly powerful, as even recorded voices can give you the extra nudge or encouragement you need to take care of yourself.Human interaction can accelerate healing; this can now be taken into the home.Voice first technology creates community, which encourages positive behavioural changes.Voice can stimulate human emotion, which in itself is an incredible healer. From the Healthcare Provider PerspectiveHealthcare providers can document office visits in realtime while examining the patient. The allows the provider to be more focused on the problem at hand.Ultimately, these behavioural changes by the providers translate into better care for the patients/clients.Voice first product creators are the graphic artists of today – e.g. physicians, psychologists, and other healthcare providers.Examples of Voice First Technology for HealthcareOpiate Addiction Tool: A voice tech product that monitors patients’ pain ratings and encourages them to stop taking pain medication before dependency and/or addiction occurs (i.e. opiates).Medication Compliance Tool: An Alexa skill designed to encourage people to take their medications (or monitor health parameters, such as blood pressure or glucose) by using various types of incentives and motivational techniques.“In-home” Physician: A physician’s voice can “talk” to the patient whenever the patient wants or needs to hear their physician. How can Voice First Technology Best Motivate Behavioural Changes? It must be a fluid interaction, a part of everyday activities. It must be part of the continuity of life – a part of a “fair day”.There must be minimal (or no) friction to use the technology.Example: A person has to go to a website (i.e. friction), whereas voice first tech could know when you enter a room and initiate a conversation (i.e. minimal friction).Text prompts/notifications can be utilized to encourage users to interact with their voice first technology.Example: A notification may tell a patient to report to Alexa when medications have been taken.Ultimately, consumers will drive this behaviour and determine how many notifications the market will bear, as there is the potential for fatigue.Voice tools may bring us back to more authentic behaviour. We have become buried in our screens; voice will allow us to connect in a way that we may have forgotten.Privacy and Voice First TechnologyPeople give up privacy for convenience, for example speaking on a cell phone, using email, using credit cards, using GPS, using a Google account. The advantages of what the technology gives us outweighs the risk.Throughout history there have been concerns over privacy whenever new technology enters the market. In response to every major threat that has been discovered over time, humans have developed systems to protect ourselves.Dr. Cybulsky does not think that we should be terribly worried about the privacy issue. He does, however, feel that as an involved citizen we should always be critical of what is happening.Ultimately, he has faith in humanity. Well said, Dr. Cybulsky, well said.List of resources mentioned in this episode:Matt Cybulsky on TwitterIoniaDelianVoice of Healthcare Summit – use code FISHER2018 for 20% off registrationTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.ca See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

John Capek talks about ways we can improve not only the predictability but also the potential success for technologies in order to improve the overall delivery of healthcare over the next decade. He considers important industry trends, such as demographic and globalization, and presents key statistics on critical data points such as the demographic for healthcare spending, on Asia emerging as a market for the healthcare sector, and the role of diabetes treatment in healthcare systems. In talking about the evolution of the healthcare industry, he cites an example of the transition in modes of therapy in the field of Interventional Cardiology. In the first 25 years, the predominant mode of therapy in Interventional Cardiology was mechanical, whether that be with Balloon Angioplasty or atherectomy devices. Now, in the recent years, he continues, we are making the transition into molecular cardiology solutions using genetic modifiers, drug-eluting stents, protein deliverers and such genetic engineering approaches. This is having a significant impact on the market place. He argues that a strong driver for growth in the medical devices segment is the integration of four major categories of technologies: IT/Health Services, Pharma, Genetics, and devices. The Executive Vice President of Medical Devices puts into context the impact of healthcare reform on the delivery of technologies. https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/gsb_2011_healthcare_summit_future_of_the_healthcare_sector
