No mask? No problem. Based on attendee pushback, a coronavirus test at the door will be the only health safety measure for this business event. Do attendees want to wear masks and keep their distance when meetings resume, or will such practices detract too much from the experience of live events? That’s a question Bradley Metrock, CEO of Nashville-based Score Publishing, has been grappling with for months. His team painstakingly created Project Voice Series Protocols that would include COVID-19 testing, daily temperature checks and health monitoring. “It was really hardcore,” says Metrock. “We said there’s going to be masks, distancing, no food, no swag.” The 420-person capacity of the conference center at Harvard Medical School would be cut down to 200 with appropriately distanced room setups. But two factors upended that plan: Harvard will likely remain closed until Labor Day, and attendees didn’t want to come to an event so mired in health safety measures. Within days, a completely different plan was hatched. The Voice of Healthcare Summit, Special Edition, will be a one-day event at the Boston Winery on Aug. 5, 2020, with a projected 125 to 150 participants. The only health protocol will be a COVID-19 test at registration. Those who test positive will be sent home with a refund; those negative will enjoy a “halfway normal” event, said Metrock. We spoke with Metrock on May 15 about the factors that drove his decision, and how he expects to pull it off.

Voice as an input as well as an interface is considered by many to be the next frontier in human advancement. According to Voicebot, there are nearly 90 million US adults owning smart speakers. This adoption exceeds over a third of consumers with a compounded annual growth rate exceeding 30%, over the past three years. In January 2020, I went to the Project Voice conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Aside from discovering a lot about voice technology, devices, and conversational AI, I met some brilliant people shaping the future of this amazing interface. Coronavirus COVID-19 is now officially a global pandemic but it has been impacting events where the voice industry has a prominent role for nearly a month. MWC, HIMSS, SXSW all canceled. What other events are likely to face a similar fate? How is the industry already adjusting to new challenges associated with large gatherings? Peter Erickson and Bradley Metrock run the largest and most popular events in catering to the voice industry globally. Erickson has already had two events canceled due to coronavirus but has online events already on the calendar that are getting a lot of attention. Metrock also had some online events planned but also has the Voice of the Car Summit planned for April. We discuss how the CEOs of Modev and Score Publishing view the current situation, how they are adjusting, and what it portends for the future. Enjoy this special edition of the Voicebot Podcast.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Bradley Metrock, CEO of Score Publishing. Bradley is many things, and most certainly all things voice. Bradley has been in the voice space for several years and culminated the Project Voice event, the number one event for voice technology and AI in America. During the podcast, I had the opportunity to learn more about what Bradley does and his vision for the future of voice. He talks in depth about how businesses need to understand the importance of incorporating voice technology within small to medium size companies. If they don’t do it soon, they will quickly fall behind. Bradley is also the Keynote Speaker at Nashville Voice Conference 2020, coming up on August 7 at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center. The event will focus on how all businesses can become more efficient and effective through the creation of Alexa Skills and Google Actions. Paul: How familiar do you believe businesses currently are with voice apps, Alexa skills and Google actions? Bradley: I think it varies, but in general it's pretty low. I view it as defensive in nature rather than offensive in nature. I think a business, including mom and pop gas stations, and as you get into the enterprise space, needs to be working with voice or working with groups like Data Driven Design who are working with voice on their behalf so that they are accumulating knowledge and they're getting acclimated to the space. But the bottom line is that if you're not delving into those waters, you're falling behind, and you're not understanding. Paul: Do you think businesses know that they can build custom applications for Alexa and Google assistant just like they can with websites or mobile apps and how those can actually help them be more efficient and effective? Bradley: I think some of that knowledge is there. They want to turn to professionals, and do it right. I don't think it's part of the mental calculus for a lot of companies. Like do the tools exist? Paul: You wrote a book more than just weather and music, 200 ways to use Alexa. Tell us about that. Tell us about some of those use cases that you've found. Bradley: It's profound. All the things that you can do with Alexa’s ecosystem. I always joke, you could line up a hundred Amazon employees and even they wouldn't know 70% or 80% of some of these things that are in the book. And I'll give you a couple of examples. It's called “Alexa, What am I Holding?” So four Alexa devices that have a front facing camera, like the Echo Show, and The Echo Spot. They have a feature called “Alexa, what am I holding?” Paul: If you had to come up with an idea of big or small to help any kind of business, including your own, with operations or marketing, creating a voice app, an Alexa skill or a Google action, what would it be? Bradley: We just went through that with Project Voice. We wanted to create a voice experience that you don't want to regurgitate the web. So with Project Voice, we thought, what is it that a voice experience for a conference ought to do? And what is it it can do, that's above and beyond regurgitating the web? And one of the things that we came up with that we used to great effect was having speakers talk about their sessions in their own voice. Paul: The goal of the Nashville Voice Conferences is to help people make things happen with their businesses with voice. And, you are the keynote speaker at Nashville Voice Conference 2020, and I'm very proud of that. Can you give us a little preview of what you're thinking will be valuable to the attendees on August 7th, 2020 at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center? Bradley: Sure! I'm thrilled that there is a Nashville Voice Conference, number one. I'm thrilled that it's growing. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paulhickey/support

He - and I mean this in a complimentary way - is NOT easily impressed. And as he admits in this wonderfully done podcast interview with our very own brilliant Sr. Strategist Sonia Thalman, he didn't know what to expect at Project Voice. But after spending a week with Joe at the number one event for Voice Tech and AI in America (shoutout to Project Voice founder Bradley Metrock), he and I both feel the energy and opportunity in the voice space, more than ever. The same way that our lives all improved as consumers and eventually as marketers and business owners in 2008-2010 with the advent of the iPhone and other smartphones, 2020 will be the year and certainly mark the beginning of the decade in which all of our lives improved due to Voice technology, like Alexa, Google Assistant and even Samsung Bixby and custom voice assistants. 15 years ago none of us knew what “pinching and zooming” or “swiping” meant. Now, our children are asking Alexa, Google and Siri just about everything. Students are building Alexa Skills for class projects and instructional technology directors are encouraging teachers to incorporate Alexa in the classroom. In this video, my friend QuHarrison Terry of Inevitable/Human and Mark Cuban Companies asks me: “What’s Keeping Me Up In Voice?” My answer: I get excited about the every day business owner and entrepreneur that maybe doesn’t have a huge team. They can use voice to become more efficient and effective. They can use voice to check their Quickbooks or have a voice based version of their company training. If you’re a small company with less than 10 people, you may not have a full HR team to train your next hire. You can use voice for that. Q also asks me: What’s the difference between a Voice App and a Voice Skill? So I happily break that down. Finally, Q tees up my take on what the best tools are to create your own Voice Apps (Alexa Skills and Google Actions). 1. Voiceflow – An authoring platform to create your own custom voice apps without coding. Content managers / digital strategists (non-coders) can easily build Voice apps in minutes and deploy to Alexa and Google Assistant. Voiceflow has several “blocks” that allow for advanced functionality such as replacing the robot voice, building visual screens for Echo Show devices via Alexa Presentation Language (APL). It also allows for team collaboration between content strategists and coders. Developers can layer API blocks and code blocks to extend the Voice App’s functionality beyond just a conversation. 2. The Voice Designer – I’m partial to this tool, because my CTO Joe Wallace and I built it for Data Driven Design clients. The Voice Designer is a one-of-a-kind WordPress plug-in that places an authoring tool in the backend of any WordPress website. The Voice Designer is similar to Voiceflow, but not as feature-heavy. It’s meant for marketing directors and small business owners to be able to build a voice-based version of their company website or blog and deploy it directly to Alexa and Google Assistant from the backend of their WordPress website. It is really meant to meet the marketer where they already are – their WordPress admin panel. 3. Engage By Voice – Engage is a phenomenal tool that features templates that can be customized to build and deploy custom voice apps for your business. Engage features templates that allow businesses to gather phone numbers and send text messages, deploy surveys, gather reviews and much more. Engage is a perfect tool for marketers to try voice and see how Alexa Skills and Google Actions can integrate into and support all of their other business development efforts. For more information on any of these tools, please feel free to contact me directly at paul@datadriven.design. I look forward to helping you build your voice apps! This interview took place at Project Voice – the number one event for Voice Tech and AI in America – from Chattanooga, Tennessee. In this episode, Teri welcomes Julie Daniel Davis, a leader in the voice education space and the Director of Instructional Technology and Innovation at a private school in Chattanooga, Tennessee.Welcome, Julie! She is a go-to EdTech guru and has been doing a lot of work in her school by helping to implement voice technology in a safe and effective manner for her students. Julie has also been speaking in multiple places about the same and comes on to talk about education and using voice technology to help fulfill educational goals.Taking Advantage of Voice Technology for EducationShe spoke at the first Alexa Conference (now known as Project Voice) in Chattanooga, TN in 2019.By sharing some of the blogposts she had written about using Alexa to explain her interest, Bradley Metrock, the event coordinator of the conference, not only invited her to take part in the conference, but also asked her to be a speaker. She asked Bradley if an educator could just sit in the back of the room and observe. She had beforehand dabbled with the idea of using voice in the classroom and even tried the concept out a few times, but held back due to privacy concerns. When the Echo Dot Kids Edition came out, she approached Bradley Metrock and told him she would like to pilot them in the classroom, and Bradley connected her to Dave Isbitski who helped her get a few of the Echo Dots to place in the classroom. They started using the Echo Dots for routines, reminders, and relevant Alexa skills.Blueprints were not available for the Echo Dot Kids Edition, so she begged Amazon to create them, and eventually Amazon came through. She believes in personalizing education and that formed the basis for their program where they make Alexa study guides for kids to study for tests. Teachers share those Alexa skills for studying with their families so that their families can use them to study at home. They also have an international program at their school through which Julie has been working with four international students who are English language learners. She is using Alexa to help them study for other exams, but what she has seen is that when the students answer Alexa, it helps them with their English pronunciation. She will be speaking at Project Voice 2020 and the students will be going with her to share their experiences.Teachers Using the Echo DevicesTeachers are not only using the devices in the classroom but also assigning students homework to go and use their devices at home. One of the advantages of having Alexa in a classroom is that it allows for small group instruction. A teacher can work with four or five kids over in one corner with one Echo device, and other small groups in other corners with their own Echo devices. They call that Station Rotation.Privacy Issues and Using Multimodal DevicesThey don’t have to only use the Echo Dot Kids' Edition. She freely uses other Echo devices because she doesn’t have to be FERPA and COPPA compliant at her school. She advises educators to be careful with how they set up their devices, how they use them, and how they store data. She has created a lot of infographics on her website that help educators set up their Alexa devices in a way that protects their students. For students under the age of 13, she only uses the kids' edition Echo Dot, because the device is COPPA compliant. She uses other Alexa devices in the other grades. She has not used Alexa devices with screens because of their price point, but what she loves about using smart speakers in the classroom is their price point. They can put a smart speaker into a classroom for $30 to $50 and every student has access. In a world where there is so much talk about equity of access, this could be a huge way for rural or poorly funded areas to make sure students have access to the world at large.Classroom Management via Smart SpeakersShe advises that a teacher should start off by telling the students what the expectations are. For example, students can’t just ask Alexa any question they want.A smart speaker helps keep the students engaged and listening to the responses that Alexa gives to the educational questions they collectively ask.Teachers’ ReactionsJulie asks teachers to pilot the smart speakers and that way teachers get to experience the benefits. When she first started out, some teachers were very skeptical about using them, and even now, some teachers don’t use them at all.List of resources mentioned in this episodeVocal IDThe Comprehensive Flash Briefing Formula CourseHow to Turn FreeTime on Alexa On or OffJulie’s WebsiteJulie on TwitterJulie on InstagramOther useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.ca See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode, Teri welcomes Bradley Metrock of Score Publishing and Katherine Prescott of VoiceBrew, to talk about their incredible work in the voice space. Welcome, Bradley and Katherine!Bradley is the CEO of Score Publishing and the VoiceFirst.FM network while Katherine is the Founder/Editor of VoiceBrew.Bradley recently wrote a book about some of the things that we can do with our Echo devices, and Katherine wrote the forward for the book. Their work in the voicefirst world is geared towards helping regular non-techie people learn how to use Alexa and voice technology.VoiceBrewIt’s a daily email newsletter that helps people get the most out of Alexa. They also publish comprehensive guides on their website covering almost all of Alexa’s key features. They now have over 25,000 email subscribers.Brad’s Alexa BookBrad wanted to write an Alexa instruction manual because he saw a need for it, and it eventually morphed into the book called “More Than Just Weather and Music: 200 Ways to Use Alexa”The book showcases the breadth of use for Alexa covering areas like healthcare, coronary, banking, publishing, and automotive. The way most people use voice technology today is similar to how most people used the internet in the 90s. They are only asking Alexa what the weather is or to play some music. This is because they don’t know what skills or commands to use.Narrowing Down to 200 Ways to Use AlexaNarrowing the list down for Bradley and his team was tough. He had skills developers asking him where their skill was in the book if he hadn’t put it among the 200.They focused more on the quality of the skills and only included those that had positive reviews (based on their quality) in the skills store. They mainly looked at whether the recent reviews were good, but also checked if the recent bad reviews were based on the quality of the skill, if not, the skill would qualify for the list.Brad also wanted to include skills that are good but haven’t gained visibility among users. They include Daddy Saturday which compliments a book titled “Daddy Saturday”, Where the Beef? and The Reuters flash briefing. The 200 ways to use Alexa include 175 Alexa skills and 25 Alexa built in functions.Katherine’s favorite kids’ skills were included in the list. They include Kids Court, Chompers, and Choose Your Own Adventure.Brad asked Katherine to write the forward for the book because VoiceBrew’s brand orientation is aligned with what the book is about. The Need for Skills DiscoverabilityWhen Brad got into publishing, he discovered the iBooks software by Apple which people were using to create interactive content. A lot of people were creating incredible multimedia, driven and interactive content, but they were having a huge discoverability problem.Eventually the whole ecosystem died because post-Jobs Apple didn’t know what to do with it. Brad sees a lot of parallels with Alexa in that regard, and therefor believes it’s very necessary to create the Alexa skills lists for enhanced discoverability.Katherine believes discoverability is challenging for voicefirst experiences because with voice, content is pulled by users as opposed to how content is pushed to them by social media platforms. She advises that Alexa skills creators should think about what distribution strategies they will use in order to ensure that their skills are highly discoverable.List of resources mentioned in this episodeThe Comprehensive Flash Briefing Formula CourseVocalID Websitewww.ThisWeekinVoice.comwww.ProjectVoice.aiVoiceBrew WebsiteKatherine on TwitterOther useful resources:Voice in Canada: The Flash BriefingComplete List of Alexa CommandsAlexa-Enabled and Controlled Devices in CanadaTeri Fisher on TwitterAlexa in Canada on TwitterAlexa in Canada Facebook PageAlexa in Canada Community Group on FacebookAlexa in Canada on InstagramPlease leave a review on iTunesShopping on Amazon.ca See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

During my conversation Brielle Nickoloff, lead, product marketing, for Witlingo, she and I discuss the value of moving quickly in the voice platform. Hear how Amazon Alexa searches data sources to respond to voice search as well as insights about voice portals for your customers. Nickoloff has a background in linguistics and neuroscience and user interface design. Her unique combination of degrees led her to Witlingo, which helps companies build voice experiences. Here is our conversation and the associated time codes to help you locate key moments in the interview:   :29 Introduction from Scott Greeson :42 Vickie Maris introduces the upcoming interview with Brielle Nickoloff, Witlingo. Vickie and Brielle met while attending the voice panel during Podcast Movement 2019. 1:53 Vickie provides background information about Brielle and her work in the voice community. 2:48 Brielle speaks three languages and has several publications to her credit. You can read more at her LinkedIn profile. 3:49 Reach Brielle via email, brielle @ witlingo dot com or through her LinkedIn profile. 4:08 How Brielle was led to the voice space. She had been double majoring in Neuroscience and Linguistics with an intent to go to Medical School. 4:32 A seminar in her linguistics program about profanity; she did a paper about why people get so frustrated with robot.   5:27 Her transition to voice for her career. 5:58 Vickie talks about taking a graduate level linguistics course during her undergraduate program 6:50 Brielle talks about the point at which she decided that she was not interested in taking the MCAT which had been part of her original plan 7:38 Contemplation of becoming a coder and attending a coding boot camp or other learning activities it would take to work in the voice space 8:21 A conversation with a best friend who was studying art and design had been sending job postings to Brielle about Google needing designers and linguists 9:03 Exploration about a career path in user experience design. 10:03 Voice design and roles in a "voice" career 10:30 Brielle began as a voice designer with Witlingo 11:22 Brielle is in a position at Witlingo that didn't exist a few years ago in this budding industry. 11:56 Reasons explained for the growth of the voice platform. 12:07 With voice, you don't have to learn how talk. 12:31 "We're finally at a point where this technology can understand us and speak back to us. Alexa was the first one. She helped make it mainstream." 13:03 "We need so many people in this field." 13:38 Vickie asks "What does a business need to do today to be ready for voice and how people are incorporating it in to their daily lives." 14:40 We're now at a point when you're in a room asking people if they know about voice assistants, everybody has at least tried it." 15:10 What does it mean to pay a company to build out a voice experience for you? 15:28 Witlingo has refined its offering to a SAS (software as a service) product for their clients. https://www.witlingo.com/ 16:02 "With a website, you wanted to build your SEO roots early on when text-based search engines came out. Those who started building out very strong, rich content on any search engine were the ones who would be pushed to the top." Brielle Nickoloff 16:35 "There is no such thing anymore as seeing the 10 blue hyperlinks on Google's first page." 16:44 "If you a voice assistant a question about a brand, a company, anything; what you get back is one, single answer. It's not a bunch of options anymore." 16:56 "Even in text-based search engines, that has been a shift we're seeing as well." 17:30 "There is quite an interesting parallel between that and what is going on with voice." 17:56 "Our product is designed so that you can sit down and record FAQs about yourself or your company... It makes so that people can find what people are searching for about your company." 18:38 "There are two things to consider with voice - the content creation and the content consumption." 19:35 "In a few years, it will be an absolute table stake for your brand to have a presence in voice. 19:52 A voice assistant will first search its own, internal database. If they can't find the answer there, they move out to the voice web. In Alexa's case, it is the Alexa Skills. Then, she'll go to the web search. Alexa is powered by Bing. The Google Assistant is powered by Google. 20:51 "Planting those voice roots very early on" is important. 21:00 Web content is not designed to be consumed while you're listening to it. 21:18 "People usually use long term searches when they are conversationally asking for things." 21:38 Include general things that you want to be an authority on. 21:56 "If you are building out that rich, voice-based content, then you're going to have a leg up in the future when the algorithms are more refined and able to actually pull an answer from third-party skills in areas where you are an authority." 22:44 Invitation to grab a screen shot of this episode with Brielle Nickoloff, and share it out with your friends and colleagues. 24:00 How to add the podcast, Agile Digital Business, to your Flash Briefing on your Amazon Echo device so that you can ask Alexa to "play your flash briefing." 25:30 "We're getting a lot of traction with marketing executives who have signature power." 26:00 "We're seeing everything from B to C; B to B.  27:12 "40 percent of adults use voice search every day and that is growing rapidly." 27:44 "You have customer care: You can easily reach your customers by providing answers and information they would need, just by asking." 27:58 There is also the digital marketing aspect. You can surface first when users are searching. 28:20 Episode about adding the Alexa Skill for the podcast appeared rapidly in search results in iTunes in the top two rows of options. 30:01 "We're banking on the idea that any serious business that has a website, a Twitter, etc., that voice is the next table stake to consider." 31:02 Brielle describes Flash Briefings that you can create for Alexa users 31:24 "If you add a Skill to your Flash Briefing lineup, you never have to remember the name of the Skill to invoke it anymore." 33:06 Witlingo team is excited to be able to provide the Flash Briefing capability to companies interested in creating a Flash Briefing for their customers to enable. 33:45 Vickie provides the example of connecting her RSS feed for her podcast with her Flash Briefing Amazon Alexa Skill 34:19 Opportunity to grab embed code from your portal with Witlingo, which allows you to feature the voice of your users providing feedback. 35:05 On being "platform agnostic." Special Offer from Witlingo to Listeners of Agile Digital Business 35:34 Brielle mentions an offer for the use of Witlingo tools for listeners who would like to try the service. If you mention that you heard about the company via Agile Digital Business podcast, the company will get you set up for a year of use of service for free. Brielle can provide more details. (Check with Witlingo about the length of this offer.) 36:56 Vickie provides an example from her experience as an author, and the importance of publishing your books in audiobook format. Her first book, Job Loss and the Cutback Blues: Journey of Grief, Uncertainty and Recovery After Being Let Go, is available as an audiobook through Amazon, Audible and other locations. The book she is about to publish will also be available as an audiobook. 37:24 Conference, Digital Bookworld, is mentioned by Brielle. Bradley Metrock (https://twitter.com/bmetrock) created the conference. It's about publishing in the age of voice and the age of digital books. 37:35 Alexa conference is now called Project Voice. Brielle highly recommends this event as well. 38:03 Show notes are in the podcast Libsyn blog, https://vickiemaris2.libsyn.com 38:29 Thank you. 39:06 Music closing

In this episode, Teri welcomes Bradley Metrock, the CEO of Score Publishing and the creator of VoiceFirst.FM, the leading podcast network covering everything about voice technologyBradley is the guy behind some of the best voice technology events out there in all different sectors. The flagship event that he puts on is Project Voice, and he also puts on many voice events covering many different verticals and industry sectors which include healthcare.Key points from Bradley! The Voice of Healthcare Summit 2018 and 2019, and some of the things that he has observed over the last year with regards to the evolution of voice technology particularly in the healthcare sector.Amazon Alexa’s HIPAA Compliance and how it will affect Amazon in both the short and long term.Developing an Event Around Healthcare and VoiceThe genesis of the Voice of Healthcare Summit started with the Voice of Healthcare Podcast which he co-created with Dr. Matt Cybulsky. They needed an in-person gathering of all the people interested in voice technology and AI, and its intersection with modern healthcare. The perfect venue for it was Harvard Medical School. They piloted the event in 2018 and it went very well. They had very qualified attendees and fantastic speakers. The Current Happenings in Healthcare and VoiceWe have sort of reached a saturation point especially for the early adopters of voice technology. There’s a prevailing thought on what the next voice technology that will carry us forward will be.There are still plenty of people who are yet to interact with computers by voice. More people are still discovering what voice technology can do for them that other interfaces cannot. It feels like the industry is plateauing, but several companies are making major moves.Samsung came out with a number of developer tools and Bixby 2.0. Apple hired some people to get more serious on improving Siri. Microsoft’s decision to partner with Amazon Alexa had a number of positive implications for their business.Different companies are diving into voice strictly into specific verticals. He predicts that there will be some sort of killer voice app in healthcare that will open up people’s eyes to the potential of what voice can do for people everywhere. Looking at the conference program at the Voice of Healthcare Summit 2019, one company called Canary Speech is well-funded and has top-notch computer scientists involved. They use voice to impact healthcare by analyzing the sound waves in someone’s voice, and measuring them against the person’s baseline and other benchmarks that they have.Other companies that will talk about their great voice apps include CARROT Pass, The Mayo Clinic, Orbita, Lifepod, Triad Health A.I. (They have a very different approach using their voice platform to help people who have been diagnosed with Parkinsons), Transform9, and many more.Innovation in Voice for Healthcare Versus Other VerticalsThe amount of innovation taking place in other verticals is huge but the attention on them by their respective sectors is different. For example, in the hospitality sector, based on the Voice of Hospitality Summit, there is a lot of innovation going on but there is very little attention on that from the hospitality market. The adoption of those technologies is very slow. From the Voice of the Car Summit, there’s plenty of innovation going on in voice technology for cars, but the attention from the market is slightly less than in healthcare or hospitality.Amazon Alexa’s HIPAA ComplianceIt brings things to a whole new level. The number of devices being sold is something that can’t be ignored. The fact that Amazon would go to the trouble of getting Alexa to be HIPAA Compliant sends a signal that voice and AI can deeply impact healthcare positively.Links and Resources in this EpisodeVoice of Healthcare Summit 2019Voice Summit 2019 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
