Send us a textWant to know what “better hearing in noise” actually sounds like when AI, sensors, and human care work in sync? We bring together Starkey's president and CEO, Brandon Sawalich, and Chief Hearing Health Officer, Dr. Dave Fabry, for a candid look at Starkey Omega AI—why it exists, what changed from Edge AI, and how it turns hearing aids into confident, 360-degree listening tools without sidelining professionals. We dig into DNN 360 and how deep neural networks now blend noise management with directionality and low-latency binaural processing to deliver measurable gains in speech understanding. Dave explains the role of IMU sensors in tracking movement and intent—think following a walking companion at your side—while Brandon shares how being privately held enables a patient-first pace of innovation. TeleHear AI adds timely support: when a clinic visit isn't possible, users can describe the problem, get smart on-device adjustments, compare results, and keep what works, with changes reported back to their clinician. It's an example of “friendly AI” that saves time, lifts outcomes, and preserves the provider-patient bond.We also talk access and ethics. From fall detection offered across tiers to StarkeyCares and Hear Now, the team argues that safety and dignity shouldn't be premium features. Data logging grows from hours-worn into environment-aware insights that inform personalization, reduce returns, and drive satisfaction. And for clinicians worried about being replaced, the takeaway is clear: the irreplaceable value is knowing the person behind the audiogram, translating powerful tech into the two or three features that matter most to that life.If you care about hearing technology, clinical excellence, health equity, and where AI is truly useful, this conversation maps the road ahead—fast, human, and focused on outcomes. Subscribe, share with a colleague who still thinks “adaptive directionality” is enough, and leave a quick review telling us which Omega AI feature you want to try first. In a free-market economy, the role of government is often debated. On the one hand, business generally prefers to be left alone by government, interpreting the word “free” in free-market as free from regulation. On the other hand, there are any number of business organizations whose principal functions are to extract as many regulatory and tax advantages as possible for their particular industry. In response to this lobbying, the Louisiana State government, like any good investor, does its best to diversify. The state has instituted economic development initiatives to attract and grow a wide range of businesses, from film to aerospace. You might remember a few years ago, starting with the re-development period after Hurricane Katrina, there was a big push to create what was called New Orleans' Biomedical District. That economic development has, as of today, reportedly created 34,000 new jobs and had an economic impact of some $3.3 billion. The Biomedical District includes the Veterans Administration Hospital, the University Medical Center, the Louisiana Cancer Research Center, and the New Orleans BioInnovation Center. The New Orleans BioInnovation Center provides office space, laboratories, business support, and even financial investment for biotech startups. They have a 66,000 square-foot building on Canal Street that opened in 2011, and cost $47m to build. This size investment in a “build it and they will come” strategy takes some serious financial and science skill to navigate. Similar state-funded bio innovation initiatives in Baton Rouge and Shreveport failed. To keep the New Orleans enterprise afloat, in 2021 Kris Khalil was named Executive Director of the New Orleans BioInnovation Center. In one type of best-case scenario, the object of biomedical innovation is to come up with a medical device that becomes an everyday piece of equipment that sells in the millions. For example, the FitBit and Apple Watch have turned the decidedly un-sexy concept of a heart monitor into a fashion item. In the same way, eyeglasses are technically a medical device. But somehow, Warby Parker and others have turned assisted vision into what is now a fashion accessory. What's next? Which otherwise pedestrian item that we use for medical-assisted-living could become hip and ubiquitous? With the growing number of people walking around with ear-buds blasting sound directly into their ears, could the next medical fashion item become the hearing aid? If you'll excuse the pun, that might not be as crazy as it sounds. Federal legislation called “The Over The Counter Hearing Aid Act of 2017” finally went into effect in early 2021. This legislation allows hearing aids to be sold in stores or online, without any consultation, prescription, or referral. As a result, some trend-spotters are predicting major growth in the hearing aid industry. Dina Zeevi is President of the Louisiana Society of Hearing Aid Specialists, and a Board Member and Administrative Secretary of the Louisiana Board of Hearing Aid Dealers. She's also a Hearing Instrument Specialist and the owner of a hearing aid store on the Westbank, called Hear Now. Out to Lunch is recorded over lunch at NOLA Pizza in the NOLA Brewing Taproom. You can find photos from this show by Jill Lafleur at our website. And here's more lunchtime conversation about New Orleans' health and hearing. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's time for the 2019 Christmas Episode of the MulletCast! Why is this the Christmas episode? Because it answers a very important question - What do you get the town that has everything for Christmas? Why you give it a world-class music festival over two days on the beach ofcourse! Tim Donnelly is the son of a third generation Elizabeth, NJ firefighter, and his bro is the 4th generation. Tim grew up the youngest of four around the jersey shore and was into music, hoops, boogie boarding, activism, and writing among other things. Tim worked on the Seaside boardwalk, was a badge checker, and a lifeguard. His experience as a badge checker has helped him evade his fellow checkers and to this day he has never owned a proper beach badge despite walking area beaches like a Kiss guitarist (that's "Frehley" for the kids out there). A piece Tim wrote about a drowning victim lead to his work with Body Boarding magazine and eventually a gig as the music editor at Surfer mag. Tim also did important work with the Surfrider Foundation, eventually bringing a chapter back to the Jersey Shore. Tim turned these experiences into working with some of the world's biggest bands at some of the world's best music festivals like Lollapalooza, Woodstock 99, Bonnaroo, and more, and he has helped friends, family, and strangers alike rebuild after Katrina and Sandy. In this episode you will hear about the early Sea.Hear Now that lived on the Asbury boardwalk and how Tim and his friend Danny Clinch went out and made Sea.Hear.Now the killer festival it is now...with a little inadvertent help from Bruce Springsteen along the way! For all you wiseasses out there that are going to comment on my shirt - that's right, I had a garbage can and a camera in the studio and was stealing any signs I could find about the 2020 Sea. Hear. Now lineup. All I want for Christmas is to be standing on the beach of Asbury Park next September on a moonlit night with my eyes closed while an epic Trey Anastasio solo rains down from the heavens over the Atlantic, but despite my sign stealing antics, Tim offered zero clues about next year's lineup. Whattaya say fellas, can we make this happen?! Get all the latest on Sea.Hear.Now at www.seahearnowfestival.com and follow @seahearnow & @donnellysea
While nursing pretty nice hangovers from going to his show the night before, Andrew and Sean sit down with Del Barber and his steel/guitar player Ryan Funk at the Country-Country head quarters and chat about his music and just country music in general. Del has been a staple of the Canadian Country and Americana scene for years and recently Rolling Stone named his song "Everyday Life" one of the "10 Best Country Songs to Hear Now". (Go check it out!) It was a fun conversation, but please excuse the ice clinking around in their Caesars...they were necessary for everyone's functionality.
"The Blue" by Southern California singer/songwriter Alice Wallace from her new album, Into the Blue, released on Rebelle Road Records, has been named one fo the 10 Best Country and Americana Songs to Hear Now - along with songs by Blake Sheldon. That is pretty good national company for a woman who is is pure California country music. Her fourth album, Into the Blueharks back to the 70’s artists like Joni Mitchelle and Jackson Brown who did not have all the answers but knew how to sing the questions. Folky, romantic, soulful, and always melodic, Alice is eclectic Americana, organic, probing but understanding and often topical. Winner of an LA MUSIC CRITIC Award, Alice has performed at LA’s legendary country venue the Palomino Club, as well as many others in her average 200-gigs year. The album marks her debut on the brand-new Rebelle Road label, an imprint founded by a trio of women dedicated to strengthening the California Country music community and expanding visibility for female artists in the Americana/roots genre. The song, is pure gold, as Rolling Stone reminds us. And, theirrepressible Trevor Douglas will drop in to let us know about new shows and new music.
Considered by many to be Billy Squier's return to form record, Hear & Now is unquestionably a fan favorite. After a few years of Rock Me Tonight video fallout and a slightly less than stellar commercial performance with 1986's Enough Is Enough, Billy returned in full force with an incredible collection of riff-laden, rock-pop hits, sweeping ballads, and a few deep cuts that continued his unique style of "articulate rock." But did it hit? Why or why not? And while we're asking questions - what is the connection between this record and the film Deliverance? Between this record at The Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping?!? Listen to find out as we continue our Songs of The Knight: A Billy Squier Retrospective series. Joined by podcast friends Jon Lamoreaux of The Hustle Podcast and BJ Kramp of the Rock And/Or Roll Podcast, Eric and his co-hosts go in-depth and track by track with Billy's sixth album. Warning: we do go off the rails a bit in the episode following a story Jon shares about his early discovery of, well, this record among other things. But we also continue our thoughtful deep analysis of this record, which is one of our collective favorites. Finally we wrap this episode with Eric's personal ranking of Billy Squier's entire discography.
