Vishaka Priyan is a junior at Catlin Gabel, a private school in Portland. She doesn’t have personal experience with foster care. But she came across a group called Project 48 that helps kids in the first 48 hours after they enter the child welfare system. And as she heard stories about the trauma and economic challenges they face in care and after, she wanted to do something that would both support them and help them develop self-sufficiency. That’s why Priyan says she decided to research incentives for businesses to employ youth in the child welfare system or who were aging out of it. The result of her self-assigned project was a bill that is making its way through the Oregon state legislature. Priyan plans to testify for the bill once it gets a hearing. She joins us to share more.

North Carolina commit Brevin Wilson has a “not quite right” way of carrying his stick, which you see a lot in oddball killers that finish far beyond what most players can. Reminds me of a Kavanaugh, small, but you almost never notice his size playing into the game. He's fully willing and capable of leaning on a defender at a near 45 degree angle to gain leverage and soak up their efforts to be physical. Willing to sell out to score goals which is a very Kavenaugh-esque trait and that makes him crazy fun to watch because he's willing to sacrifice his body to get the single. There is a ton to like about this kid and UNC picked up a solid guy that could outperform his #48 ranking when all is said and done. *READ THE FULL BLOG POST* https://www.laxfactor.com/2022/09/north-carolina-commit-brevin-wilson-may-be-my-favorite-player-in-the-2024-class/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/laxfactor/support

Juniors in high school need to focus on three tasks to keep on track with college planning. In other words, things get busy! The main college planning focus of a high school junior is building a solid school list. Once the school list is set, juniors create a deadlines calendar across all institutions. A deadlines calendar should include three date types: testing, admissions, and financial aid. Finally, juniors should focus on test preparation for the SAT and ACT. View the blog post and download the checklist at https://gradmetrics.com/high-school/high-school-junior/.

Canadian high schooler Ana DuCristea has a clever solution for the quarantine blues, as days blur into weeks. Using AI and natural language processing, she programmed an app capable of setting customizable reminders so you won’t miss any important activities, like baking banana bread or whipping up Dalgona coffee. DuCristea, who’s familiar with Python and has taken a variety of online AI courses, set to work on the app after winning a Jetson Nano Developer Kit this summer at AI4ALL, an AI summer camp. She’d long been frustrated with the simplicity of current reminder apps and decided to create her own solution. Using Python and the Nano, DuCristea developed an app in just two months that integrates with mobile and PC messaging program Discord. With the app, users can message a bot on Discord requesting a reminder for a specific task, date and time.

The Wright State softball team’s most impactful player hasn’t appeared in game this spring. But she's still made a significance difference on the Raiders. Emma Bush, a junior at Bethel High School in Tipp City, played softball most of her life until she was sidelined with a broken wrist and was unable to walk after her surgery. Bush was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. “I feel like I’m on a team again, and it’s such an awesome experience,” said Bush. Last November, Bush signed an official contract and national letter of intent to join the Wright State softball team through Team Impact, which places courageous kids with collegiate athletic teams. “Having Emma here has been great for our team,” Alexis Mayle, a junior who plays first base. The Raiders, who are 33-20 overall and in first place in the Horizon League, close out the regular season at home May 6-7 versus Valparaiso.
As the New Year is upon us, I told you that we were going to mix things up. So here is one of those mix ups. On January 1st at 9 PM we are opening our lines up to the young people. With so many bad things going on in Baltimore right now, it's a blessing to see that there are young people out there that are doing something positive. Let's talk to one of those young people this week. Kirsten Whiting is a high school junior, singer, and actress. She became interested in pursuing a career in the entertainment industry following a major role in the 2010 Winands Elementary School musical production of Mostly Motown. Kirsten attended Sudbrook Magnet School where she studied vocal music, while there she had the opportunity to show her acting abilities in the school musical “13”. While at Sudbrook, she took an interest in history and government. In 2013 Kirsten starred as Balthasar in the stage play Much Ado about Nothing. Currently, Kirsten participates in mock trial and is auditioning for her school musical, Little Shop of Horrors. She is a member of the National Society for High School Scholars, the National Honor Society, and is a class officer for the class of 2017 at Randallstown High School. When she gets older, she would like to pursue a career in entertainment or politics. Join me, oh I'm sorry, I did say we're doing things different, join Nichelle Johnson host of The Man In The Mirror, and stepping back co-host Hezekiah L. Montgomery as we welcome our first young person Kirsten Whiting to our platform on New Years Day January 1, 2016 at 9 PM. We're going to learn more about Kirsten as Nichelle takes over as host and I move to the background as co-host. We're giving the young people a chance to be a voice on our show. So pass this along, tell all the other young people to listen in, call in and hear Kirsten's story.
