The road to financial independence isn't always linear, but stoicism might be the secret ingredient that keeps you on track. This ancient philosophy gets a bad rap, but with its framework as your financial “operating system,” you'll be able to weather all kinds of storms! Welcome back to the BiggerPockets Money podcast! Today, Darius Foroux is a business owner, landlord, financial educator, and the author of eight books. But as a boy, he watched his family live paycheck to paycheck for many years. Vowing to one day become wealthy, Darius started saving every penny possible, only to find that practicing staunch frugality could only take him so far. After more than a decade of hard work and sacrifice, he had just $10,000 to his name and, after student loans, a negative net worth. But in 2015, Darius made a seismic mindset shift that propelled him to FI in just FIVE years! In this episode, Darius dispels the myth that stoicism is about suppressing emotions and lacking empathy. Instead, you'll learn that its tenets revolve around creating balance, staying grounded, and changing how you respond to things beyond your control—virtues that are congruent with building wealth. But that's not all. He will also show you how to increase your income, gain a “stoic edge,” and invest your money in 2024! In This Episode We Cover How Darius went from a low net worth to financial independence in FIVE years Why reaching FI is easier with stoicism as your “operating system” Why investing in yourself and learning new skills is the KEY to higher income The three steps for gaining a “stoic edge” that helps you build wealth faster The BEST way to start investing in the stock market in 2024 And So Much More! Does winning at investing mean that you need more information, a better rule set to follow, or better connections? Our guest today says that while those can be advantages, it's hard to "win" those games. However, there is one method which can help us easily increase our odds of becoming a better saver and investor. More good news? This method is available to us all. Our guest today says learning from the Stoics, philosophers from ancient times, we can easily beat the average investor and we can set ourselves up for life. If you're listening to SB for that reason, you're in a for a treat. Darius Foroux is not only one of our favorite bloggers (we've used his work several times as the centerpiece for our Friday roundtable chats between personal finance luminaries), he actually joins us today in the basement to help you become a wiser, stronger, and hopefully wealthier Stacker. In our headline segment, one saver says that he saved too much money into his 401k retirement plan. Huh? How does that even make sense? We'll chat about how to best save for retirement and also challenge you to think about how you save...and not just about the amount you're saving. We'll hear from a Stacker in need as well AND of course, save time for Doug's trivia question that you'll be talking about all day long.

I came across an article from a guy named Darius Foroux who said his mentor gave him the best advice to be successful...He said, “I just try to avoid being unsuccessful. You should study what makes you unsuccessful, unhappy, broke, fat, stupid. Then, eliminate those things out of your life."Darius said, “To this day - I still live by that advice.”So I did exactly what he said... I wanted to know what ARE some of the common habits and traits of unsuccessful people and then work hard to remove them from my life one by one.I did the research and in this week's podcast video, I'm giving you the list of 10 things unsuccessful people do that the successful DON'T.FREE CHAPTER DOWNLOAD
We all want to be successful, and as a How I Work listener, you're actively looking for tools, tips and tricks that'll get you there. You're seeking out the best modern minds and trying to understand what's made them successful. Good on you! But before you celebrate, you might need to consider the complete opposite approach… Darius Foroux writes books, articles and blog posts for people who want to keep growing wiser and wealthier - so he's spent a lot of time thinking, reading and writing about the art of investing. The most powerful tool he's come across in his years of research - sourced from the investing giants Charlie Munger and Warren Buffet - is a very simple thought experiment: invert the question. “How do I become successful?” is a well-intentioned question, but it welcomes far too many possible answers. Instead, Darius finds clarity by asking what would make him unsuccessful… Connect with Darius on Twitter or at his website You can find the full interview here: Darius Foroux on writing, investing and living like a Stoic *** My new book Time Wise is out now. From veggie variety packs and sweet potato yogurt to pear relish, there are endless innovations in agricultural agro-processing and over the next few editions we unbundle opportunities for new farmers. First up, how to use surplus fruit to make jam in Mzansi. Jam manufacturer, Nigel Jacobs chats to us about the nitty gritty of processing fruit. Drum roll please, for a brand-new campaign with Netafim, a global leader in irrigation solutions, promoting sustainable agricultural practices. We welcome, Adriaan de Lange, managing director to introduce Netafim and why precision irrigation is key for new farmers. In our agripreneur 101 we meet, Babe Masuge founder of BSMS Chili House. Her passion for entrepreneurship drives her and she has her eyes set on opening her own store, specialising in chilli sauces in the future. Our book of the week is, Do It Today: Overcome Procrastination, Improve Productivity, and Achieve More Meaningful Things by Darius Foroux. And, our farmer tip of the week comes from Unathi Liwani, agronomy lecturer at Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute in the Western Cape.
In the midst of challenging times, we often think we're going through the worst time ever. And when we're in the middle of adversity, we think it never ends. That's why we always say things like, “my life is over!” No, you're not dramatic. It's just one of our thinking errors. It's difficult for us to judge a crisis while we're in it. In hindsight, it's much easier. We can look back and think, “I survived that. I will survive other difficult things in the future.” But when we face illness, financial problems, or adversity in our relationships, we're quick to think it's THE END. And once we get stuck in a negative thinking pattern, we lose motivation. And what happens when we lose motivation? Right, we give up So how can we get over that? How can we stay motivated during tough times? After going through a lot of adversity (personally and professionally) myself, I've learned a few things about staying motivated. I love what Darius Foroux shares: 1. Do something that makes you feel good “Does online shopping count?” No, It does not. You and I both know that buying things gives you temporary pleasure. That's the last thing you need during adversity. Because if you seek shallow pleasure, you'll go 60 miles per hour on the Hedonic Treadmill. Your highs will be still high, but the lows will be devastating. Instead, seek lasting pleasure. Don't know what to do? Here are a few things I like: Organize an activity with friends/family that cheer you up (avoid negative people, even if they are your family) Spend a WHOLE day reading a good book Go for a long walk or run (more than 50 minutes) Hit the sauna Go to the pool—swim a bit and relax a bit Write about what you've learned Start learning a new skill We need to boost your dopamine. To do that, we need to reward ourselves (again, don't buy anything). Do something that makes you enjoy life. That's my standard. I aim for doing something that makes me say, “Man, I love life.” I can help you to put your desire to work. How I Work is a product of the modern world - it's a podcast, a format which didn't even exist at the turn of the century, and a lot of the productivity tools and hacks are geared towards knowledge work for the digital age. So it's surprising to hear that Darius Foroux, himself an entrepreneur and writer taking advantage of the digital space, lives and works by the ancient philosophy of Stoicism. But Darious isn't dogmatic - he's equally inspired by Eastern Philosophy and employs Zen practices like meditation when he finds Stoicism too stifling. Is saving for the future preventing you from enjoying your present life? This may be an unpopular opinion for a financial podcast, but it is important to ask difficult questions to experience growth. If over-saving is preventing you from enjoying your present life, then you need to make changes. On this episode of Retirement Starts Today, we'll examine an article by Darius Foroux that asks, Are You Saving Too Much Money? After the retirement headlines segment, I'll answer a question from CJ about using a donor-advised fund to offset the last year of high income before retirement. Get ready to ask challenge yourself and explore your financial decisions as you press play. Outline of This Episode [1:42] Saving too much money for your future could prevent you from enjoying your present life [4:32] How to know when you're saving too much? [6:53] Does it make sense to create a donor-advised fund to get a tax deduction? [10:22] What other deductions could you take advantage of? Saving too much for the future could prevent you from enjoying the present Today is the most important day that you have to live. If you are saving too much money you may not be able to enjoy today to its fullest. There are people that save up to 70% of their income while planning an early retirement, but this type of habitual frugality can get in the way of enjoying life in the present. Although saving a high percentage of your salary could give you confidence about your future, it can be difficult to unwind that practiced frugality to truly enjoy life. How to know if you are saving too much If you're constantly asking yourself on a daily basis how much things cost, you might be saving too much. Try not to calculate your spending down to the penny. Instead, be more conscious of how you spend your money. The is a balance between spending your entire paycheck and over saving is fluid and complex, so it is important to analyze your situation to understand the best saving situation for you. There are several factors to consider when analyzing your savings patterns: How old are you? What do you value in life? What type of lifestyle do you want? Do you have a career you enjoy? Where do you live? What are the odds you can do your work until you're old? Do you have a support system? Understanding the answers to these questions can help you recognize whether you are saving too much. How to balance saving for the future while maximizing today So, how do we balance living in the present and making the most of our lives today while, at the same time, being responsible stewards for our future selves? A good place to start is by coming up with a financial strategy that incorporates your values. Once you do that, you can use the free tools available on the internet to help you determine how much you need to save. Self-reflection is important to understand whether you are truly living your best life now or if you are waiting for some arbitrary future date to pursue happiness. Are you living your best life now? If not, what are you waiting for? Take 2! on I Don't Like Affirmations by Darius Foroux found on “Medium.com,” a blog curator. Last week we looked at the first three. This week we look at number 4 - 7: #4 - “Get it done and move on” and the 10 minute jump start, doing it with joy and the pencil technique!; #5 - “almost there, almost there” and cutting things up into digestible pieces; #6 – So what! So What! and adding the word yet; and #7 – Let's go! The post 2021-34: Affirmations-Part 2; Absolute Word-Awareness first appeared on Metaphysical Romp 2 Podcast.
Romping with an article from “Medium,” a blog post curator site, entitled, “I Don't Like Affirmations – But These 7 Actually Work” by Darius Foroux. We explore three of them: “You've done it in the past, so you can do it now;” “Do it today, not tomorrow;” and “Learn to love it,” my least favorite. We share how an affirmation is “supposed” to be constructed. The Absolute Word is “Inspiration." The post 2021-33: Affirmations-Part 1; Absolute Word-Inspiration first appeared on Metaphysical Romp 2 Podcast.
SHOW NOTES: On this show...we will raise our hand when called, sitting up straight, and being present as we transport ourselves in the NOW. How many hours in the day do you spend rehashing a time past; fond memories, past mistakes, lost loves, easier times, or devastating tragedies? Maybe you focus on time travel as you brainstorm about the future; better times, new ventures, finally arriving, potential love, or the right recipe to finally achieving happiness. Wherever you are today, why not try the here and now. Today, at the moment, as it happens….the art of being present. Is it possible to live life without expectations? Relying on who you are today to get you through the hour. So many minutes, hours, days, months, years are spent mentally traveling through time instead of drinking in the special moments made in the NOW. I for one struggle with the NOW. I'm busy, busy, always planning and doing and before I know it, a whole day has gone by and I'm exhausted. I love to brainstorm new ideas and make grand plans. What could be? For me, these aren't just pipedreams but in most cases, something I activate and add to my plate. Meditation always seemed to slow. I would sit there waiting for something to happen and my mind would be in a million different places. The first time I tried yoga I thought the same thing - this isn't exercise! Before that rubs you the wrong way I now know my line of thinking was all skewed. I kept thinking I was supposed to be pushing myself, huffing and puffing. Then one day I was able to relax my mind and concentrate on what I was doing at the moment and I found it both challenging and relaxing. The relaxing part for me was giving my mind a break. I've always said if mind racing burnt calories I would be in such great shape haha. I have yet to be consistent with anything but burning the candle at both ends but this IS something I strive for. So here, in the now, I'm saying it to all of you. My goal is to create more moments throughout my day to give my mind a treat, relax, and just BE. Gunjan Johar lays out the timeline of Past, Present, Future: Where Do You Spend Your Time? In her article for medium.com Exerts from the content: Some people focus on what “should” have happened or what “should” happen instead of on what “is” happening. They blame others for slights that occurred decades ago and unfortunately, they are usually the only one who remembers this. They have difficulty forgiving others or themselves and this prevents them from letting go and moving forward in a healthy manner. No matter what your situation, you always have the option to change. We are all able to restart our life if we make the decision to do so, but your way of thinking has to change. I realize letting go of an old way of thinking may not be as easy as it sounds. “Just let go” or “get over it!” - our minds have a nasty habit of running away with our thoughts and the logical you, feels like you're chasing it down saying “HEY give that back!”. But there are ways to start the process of asserting more control. And that may be where you are on your journey. You've hit the mile marker of starting to become more aware of these habits in order to make a shift. Perfect. Let's start there… Darius Foroux gives us a tactic with Past, Present, and Future: Use Time Perspectives to Live Better found at dariusforoux.com Exerts from the content: The 3-time perspectives of the human mind Past, Present, and Future The 1/9/90 principle of time perspectives 1% past-focused: I take about 15 minutes a day to journal. But I don't just think about the past when I journal. I try to occasionally reflect on the past to learn. 9% future-focused: This is the time I dedicate to planning and thinking about the future. I always want to be aware of the fact that life can be long. For example, I spend time creating fitness routines and buying healthy food because I know that's better for future-me. 90% present-focused: This is when I execute my plans and the time I spend enjoying my days. While I might plan only 9% of the time, the actual work happens here: Working out, writing, reading, doing chores, eating, traveling, and so forth. I don't want to be lost in thought when I do these things. It's hard to embrace the joy of the NOW when you believe your best times have already come and gone. Remember the “easier times” you know - before bills, responsibility, complicated relationships, children. The time in your life when it was all about you. Tim Hill explains; Why Am I Always Thinking About The Past? In his article found at timhillpsychotherapy.com Exerts from the content: Introspection can lead you to learn more about yourself. Rumination – regret and ‘wheel spinning' Telling the difference between rumination and introspection If you feel that you are drawing lessons from the past, or enjoying the past then it's more likely that you're being introspective. On the other hand, if your thoughts about the past are full of regrets and bitterness, or your thoughts have a repetitive automatic quality, it's likely that you are ruminating. Visualizing yourself where you want to be and what you want to be doing is important in creating goals and harnessing the motivation to reach them. But where is the balance? Remember talking about the pendulum swing from extreme to the extreme? In all things, a healthy balance is an ultimate goal. Author Claudia Hammond exposes the behavior of; Why You're Spending Time Thinking About the Future in the Present found at ttbook.org Listen to the show for this wonderful perspective Art Markman helps in this exploration with; These are the times when thinking about the future is unproductive - in his article for fastcompany.com PREDICTION IS HARD ADAPTATION IS KEY BALANCE DREAMS WITH WORK KEY HIGHLIGHTS Create more moments throughout your day to give your mind a treat, relax, and just BE. When your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are devoted to the past or the future, you are robbing today! You cannot reach your potential and make good choices if you are trying to resolve issues from the past or predict the future. Sometimes people focus all their energy on what hasn't even happened yet. Awareness of time perspectives helps you enjoy your days, learn from the past, and shape a better future. Ultimately, we all want to make the best use of our time. So no matter what you do, don't wait for life to bring you joy, clarity, or purpose. Rumination -rather than being a way out of problems, it's often a way to replay our failures and torture ourselves. Visualizing yourself where you want to be and what you want to be doing is important in creating goals and harnessing the motivation to reach them. One of the things people think about the future is that they will have more spare time. And there is no evidence that we'll have any more spare time in the future. Just about every success story also involves a lot of hard work. CHALLENGE: take ownership over your mental mind travel to find a healthy balance of past, present, and future. Set your sights on letting go of what has already happened to make room for what is yet to go. Add action to your daydreaming so you can spend the majority of your time in the NOW, enjoying life as it unfolds. I Know YOU Can Do It!

In this episode Joanne Williams, LCSW discusses from Darius Foroux, “Say yes to your Passions and No to Everything Else” Summary of today Podcast: Why have we stopped dreaming? Join my breakthrough the Social anxiety course to feel in control and confident to know how and what to say to get what you need. 5 Tricks to motivate you towards your goals Question for today is? “What’s the one thing you can do, such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” Why don’t we dream anymore? Or why did we stop dreaming? When was the last time you spent time, just imagining- Imaging-seeing-creating thinking about our goals, wants and dreams? I believe because someone said get real, get your head in the game and stop that daydreaming all the time. Maybe some truth to that we are really avoiding our everyday dull humdrum life by imagining a better life instead of working on one. Maybe that is why we have the New Year’s tradition at least once a year. Dream again. I remember imagining I would be a physiotherapist as a kid. I would help people walk again. I thought it was a cool name to say and the thought of helping people really resonated with me. Do you remember your first dreams, the classic fireman or nurse? All helping professions. There is something inside us that is yelling to get out. When did that voice quiet down for you? Or do you still hear it yelling out to you to achieve it now? 2/3 of people were found to not be engaged in their work. Think about it. What if you chose this year to actualize a dream to feel success at something that really matters to you? If 2020 showed us anything that life can change in an instant and never be the same again. Take some time to think about what is important to you. Join my Social Anxiety Simplified-Confidence Builders 6 week course using 3 powerful strategies to know what to say and how to say it with confidence while being heard and respected in social interactions. Find the relationship of your dreams, know how to ask for that raise. Have the confidence to go for that career you always wanted. More at AnxietySimplified.com Listen to the profound Jim Rohn, the late personal development legend. Rohn said something that left me stunned, says Ayodeji Awosika In his article Use the ‘5-Year Rule’ to Create the Future You Want A proven process for building your dream life Rohn believed that whatever it is you want to do to change your life — start a business, build a brand, master a skill, or create an amazing network — you could do it in the span of five years. “Five years doesn’t seem like a ton of time,” So, in that moment he thought that 5 years was doable and seemed reasonable to commit to. Where will you be in 5 years? Either way you will be doing something, why not focus on what you really want to create. Let’s look at some actually proven things you can do. The part of my formal psychological training kicked in to realize that with positive reinforcement and repetition creates success, which creates more positive reinforcement of liking the good feelings that success creates with that strong commitment to continue and then the belief is created, that I can achieve something once I put these elements together. That is using brain science to motivate us to reach our goals. I have used this method to counsel 1000’s of my clients unknowingly that this was the pathway that inspires us to reach our goals and have now created a fun way to achieve goals. The components had to start within each of us for a life purpose and meaning to life. That is what brings us happiness and excitement. ½ of people were found to be unhappy with their careers. Is that you? 50%?? If you are ready to make some changes here are some things you can start today to use: 3 questions to ask yourself to get you going and in the Success Zone I call it. Find out what is not right for you? Write these down. What am I good at? Or what are my strengths? What comes Naturally to me? Ask trusted friends or family. How do I learn the best? Quietly, alone, in a Team? Under stress. How can I focus the easiest? What are my norms and values that are critical I keep? They must match which ever path I take. So, there is an element of time and persistence to make this goal come true. If you use those five years wisely, you can come out the other side of them exactly where you want to be. Here’s how to commit to the process. Spend your first 90 days working on your new skill or path with reckless abandon. You’ll get a sense of what success looks like as you make progress, but more important, you’ll figure out whether or not you actually enjoy the thing you’re doing. If it turns out not to be a great fit, you can quit after 90 days without having wasted much time. An alternative is to use the Rule of 100: Do something 100 times to get good at it. Write 100 blog posts. Shoot 100 videos (something I recently accomplished with my new YouTube channel), record 100 podcasts, pitch 100 potential new clients. Don’t focus on making each one perfect; just focus on doing your thing, over and over. At the beginning, it’s a volume game. Research shows that it takes, on average, 66 days to form a new habit to do something for 66 days or 6,000, but you’ll never make a change if you don’t have a good reason. What drives change? Pain or pleasure. At some point, you simply can’t stand your current behavior or situation, and you need to do something about it. Move away or towards something new. The habits I adopted as a result may seem like small improvements, with insignificant daily returns. But because What is behind this goal. Are you moving away from something painful or toward something exciting and has a passion driving you?? You choose. Take the time to really look at this, either direction will get you there. Did you procrastinate at school, so you had the pressure to get it done? Or were you ahead of needing it done, so you did not feel the pressure or pain? You need to know yourself. Which drives you? How could we possibly be excited about a new life purpose. From Darius Foroux, article, “Say yes to your Passions and No to Everything Else”. Set three daily priorities This is one of the best productivity strategies there is. Focus is what leads to results. It’s the thing that will bring you closer to achieving your short- and long-term goals. But how do you focus when your days are filled with endless distractions? By limiting your options. Each morning be clear with yourself about what you want to achieve. Then commit to completing three or four small, but essential, tasks — anything beyond is a bonus. Push through the suck In the beginning, you won’t be very good at the new skill you’re trying to learn or the path you’re trying to forge. You might just be trying to survive. Most people quit in this phase. Don’t be one of them. Why? Because one day, you won’t just get a little better and become a little more successful—you’ll be much better and experience a lot more success. This is where you desire for the outcome MUST be stronger than the suck factor. What is your desire that you MUST reach? Check off with your progress everyday, every 7 days and reward yourself at 30 days 3 months 9 months 18 months. Your rewards will make this doable, if they are big enough to keep you going, but easiest enough to not make it a big deal. This is where the brain science kicks in and it works to get reinforced even by simple things can hit our dopamine button in our brain for that little hit that will keep us feeling good, as we move towards a goal. Even a gold star or a check mark, if that makes you feel accomplished and on the right track. Rewards are a must, just like a paycheck, is necessary to keep us in the game. This is a piece of advice from reading Peter Drucker, author of Managing Oneself: Use 18-month benchmarks to track your overall progress. This length of time is long enough to give you enough data, but not so long that you create unrealistic goals. If you lose your way, remember The One Thing The One Thing by entrepreneur Gary Keller teaches a simple rule to help you stay focused and productive: Ask yourself the question, “What’s the one thing you can do, such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” You can use this system to reverse engineer long-term goals into actionable goals and key performance indicators to work on in the short to intermediate term. When you break things down to the present moment and focus on the immediate future, you’ll look up five years later to see that you’ve achieved a level of progress even you didn’t think possible. Your skills compound, like an investment account. But first you have to start. This can take some trial and error or time to cement what is just right for you. But, Critical to get into the Success Zone. What are you ready for this new year. Write down the 3 questions: What are my strengths? How do I learn or achieve in the best way? What are my values that are a necessity to have to feel the accomplishments feeling I am looking for. If your old thought patterns are the reason that you give up or aren’t finding your niche yet. Maybe its time to reach out for some help. Or find an accountability coach or join a course that can help you with that clearing out the doubts between your ears. I will be starting a new goal this January with a goal focused course that has steps for the achievable believable goals to reach, using brain science to motivate you to the finish line of mission accomplished and there is no better feeling than reaching a goal and feeling successful, no matter how small. Darius Foroux (https://dariusforoux.com/) is a writer and creative entrepreneur. He is also the #1 most-read author on Medium, and one of my favorite blogs for the past few years. Darius lives in Holland, where he was raised. His parents are immigrants from Iran. Dutch is his first language but you’ll never know through his writing. I quickly learned during our conversation that English has been an official language taught in schools and universities in Holland. Darius is the author of 6 books, including Think Straight and What It Takes To Be Free. There’s one question at the core of his work: How can we live a useful life that matters? In short, his work focuses on four main topics: Productivity: How can we achieve more without sacrificing our well-being? Habits: What habits will make our lives better, and how can we form them? Decision Making: What ways of thinking lead to better decisions? Personal Finance: How do we build wealth without sacrificing our integrity? Welcome to Self Love Sundays (SLS) and to this exquisite conversation I had with my beautiful soul sister Zel Garcia. We have connected on a very deep level when we found each other on Instagram. Her IG content is absolutely stunning and beautiful. She's inspiring so many people with her devotion, love, and passion for beauty, art and healthy plant based food. In this episode we talk about cultivating more kindness in our lives and how daily journaling has helped her find her true path and calling. This was definitely not the last episode I had her on my show. Her wisdom is simply mind blowing and her creativity contagious. Background: Zel is a user experience designer and lives in Auckland New Zealand. She has a big heart and passion for art, design, being outdoors and everything health and wellness. Some of the interesting projects that came out from her love for health and wellness includes: selling mason jar salads, conducting smoothie bowl workshops and cooking/preparing food for women’s circle events. She's also doing product photography work and most of her clients share the same advocacy as she does, taking health and wellness into a holistic approach. When looking to improve ourselves, we often focus on the good habits we should strive to have to build or own success. But, sometimes it can be tricky to really outline what that looks like. This article by Darius Foroux makes that a little easier by looking at what things we should actually avoid to be more successful. When I started reading his list I was looking at it from a career perspective, but part of what this helped me realize is that it’s not just about shaping your career. If you shape your life in a way that sets you up to be a better, more well-rounded person, that really helps you succeed in all aspects of your life. Join Justine and I as we discuss these 10 habits to avoid!

We may not admit it but a crucial part of our wardrobe is the mask we wear everyday that hides our true selves. This mask is more familiar to our friends, family and colleagues than our true face. Why is it so hard to be ourselves? Why are we content to hide that which is authentic and full of clarity? Is it that we are strangers with our true selves? Have we assimilated so well that we believe the mask is real? And when we do find glimmers of our true selves, why do we apologize for it? Today's featured author, Darius Foroux challenges us to discover what is unashamedly true about being ourselves and embrace it wholeheartedly.
The Un-Pursuit of Happiness Do you struggle to find happiness within yourself? Do you despair every time you watch the news? In today’s episode, we’re going to talk about how to get over this despair and how pursuing happiness may not be the best to actually finding happiness. There’s an interesting trend in a lot of things I’ve been reading online, namely a sense of despair, hopelessness, and depression almost manifesting itself as nihilism. And why is this? Why do we feel like we’re in such hard times? Is it that things were better in the past and we’ve just lost our way, as many in some circles seem to think? If we look at how things were 100 years ago, most people were likely to be farmers, living a life with a lot of hard work keeping farm animals and harvesting crops - certainly not a life of leisure or comfort. If you lived in the city, you were very likely a factory worker, with less than ideal conditions, often with very long hours because there weren’t a lot of labor laws in place. So why are we, with so much leisure time and modern conveniences, so unhappy? I think that ironically it’s because as a society, we focus so much on trying to be happy. Now, why would this, the search for happiness, make so many people unhappy? Isn’t this what we’re supposed to do with our lives? It even says in the American Declaration of Independence from the British that we have the right to “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” But that’s the thing - we’re not guaranteed happiness, we’re only given the opportunity to pursue happiness. But I think it’s this dogged pursuit that gives us so much anguish. So why does pursuing happiness not bring happiness? I mean we’re taught from an early age that when we want something that we go out and get it. I think that happiness it a byproduct of doing useful and good things in our lives. When we try to make ourselves happy, we can’t. It’s like trying pet a cat. The more you chase after the cat, the more it runs from you until you stop chasing it and ignore it, then it suddenly shows up trying to snuggle itself right into your face. It isn’t until we stop trying to be happy, and just focus on trying to live a good life, that happiness finds us. Happiness is what happens when we making other plans or while we’re doing other things. Gratitude >“If what you have seems insufficient to you, then though you possess the world, you will yet be miserable.” >― Seneca If you were to ask yourself what you want in your life, what would be on that list? Would you list the things that you already have? One of the most important things that I’ve learned in studying stoicism it to be grateful for what we have, and to learn to want what we already have. If we’re always chasing some shiny object to fill that hole inside of us, we’ll always feel empty. Appreciating what we have - a place to live, family and friends, food, even the most basics of things, can immediately improve our level of happiness. When I was in high school me and my friends used to say, “Wherever you go, there you are.” At the time it was just us being silly. I think we’d heard it on some TV commercial or show, but as I’ve gotten older, I realize that there is a profound truth in it. You can’t ever escape who you are. If you’re unhappy with who you are, if you don’t like yourself, nothing that you have, nothing that you do will ever fix that. Learning to be okay with yourself, learning to love yourself, and be good to yourself, is one of the biggest keys to happiness. I think loving who you are is an overlooked part of loving what you have. To recognize you are worthy of love despite, or maybe even because of your faults, is not an easy thing. But remember, we are all imperfect and messy and full of doubts, and every single one of us is worthy of love. Purpose >“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” >— Emerson I read an essay a while back from Darius Foroux and he proposed that life is not about being happy, it’s about being useful. That idea really struck a chord with me, because when I really think about it, the times in my life when I’ve felt the best are when I’ve taken on the challenges that I'm facing and I work at them, and I make some headway. When I’m serving other people, and I’m trying to help others through their challenges, I feel energized. When I’m working on creating something, whether that’s music or writing or this podcast, I feel like there’s purpose to my efforts. When I’m challenging myself in some way that somehow adds value to the world, I feel like I’m contributing, and that I’m helping move the world forward in some way. Service >“One cannot pursue one’s own highest good without at the same time necessarily promoting the good of others. A life based on narrow self-interest cannot be esteemed by any honorable measurement. Seeking the very best in ourselves means actively caring for the welfare of other human beings. Our human contract is not with the few people with whom our affairs are most immediately intertwined, nor to the prominent, rich, or well educated, but to all our human brethren.” >— Epictetus I think the last, and most important part of allowing happiness to find you, is serving others. When we focus on ourselves and only look after ourselves, we miss out on adding to something to the world. When we only look after our own happiness, remembering that happiness is a byproduct of action, the more we can give to the world, the more chances happiness will have to show up in our lives. Rather than complain about all the things that are wrong with the world, what can you do to be part of the solution? We all have something to offer, some unique talent that the world needs. Even if it’s just showing up and supporting causes that you believe in. Every good movement in the world needs people that are willing to show up. I know that it seems like there’s so much wrong in the world. I think every age has had its struggles with problems that seem insurmountable and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But remember, you can only do what you can do, and that will be enough. Don’t get discouraged because you can’t save the world in a day. But add something good, be on the positive side of the equation, and know that you’re being part of the solution. Hey friends, thanks for listening to the podcast. If you only have five years to live, what would you do with that time? What is most important to you? Where would you go? What needs to be set up for your family's future? That's the direction of today's conversation between Brandon and Jerry. Dismissively call it a mid-life crisis if you like. The reality for many people is we are stuck on Someday Isle, "Someday I'll do _____." This is a rut in our lives. We are not guaranteed tomorrow. We are only given today. This was a big point from our interview with Darius Foroux on BtR 042, How to Retrain Our Minds to Stop Betraying Us. Yesterday is gone, and the future doesn't exist. Therefore, we only have today.Because thinking that we only have today can be a scary concept, consider what if you have five years to live? What if that time were less?Money Considerations in Family FinancesMany families live paycheck-to-paycheck giving little consideration of the future for their loved ones. The "five years to live" approach forced Jerry to consider retirement options, emergency fund needs, bucket list requirements, and what to teach his wife and children so they can go on without him. What's On Your Bucket List?Remember Someday Isle? Where are you with your bucket list?Take a look at your written bucket list. Okay, take a moment to write out your bucket list. Got it now? Take a look at your written bucket list. If you're saying "Someday I'll..." to many or all of these things on your list, then it is time to do something about it.Prioritize that list as you listen to this episode, of course. If you only had one year to live, what would you want to do on this list? What needs to happen to make that happen? Start working towards that today. Two years? What's the next big thing you'd want to do. Start planning now. Keep working towards the first goal though.Three years? Four? You get the picture.Resources and LinksHow to Retrain Our Minds to Stop Betraying Us - BtR 042Just Take Action and Other Insights from Jody Maberry - BtR 027
Fear Can Waste Our TimeMany people waste their life and time in fear of failure or fear of success. The interview with Jamie Rodriguez in BtR 043 reminded us that life is too short to let fear keep us from doing something worthwhile. Yes, technically Darius Foroux mentioned it first in episode BtR 042 the week before. The point is that we've picked up on a theme here.We can accomplish things bigger than we could ever have imagined. Fear needs to take the passenger seat rather than the driver's seat.In the case of Jamie, she expanded her view by visiting New York City. That gave her the courage to move forward with her dream. She has fear, and it's not going waste her time any longer. There are things all around us that can show us that doing something big is possible. What will help you see that big things are possible? Brandon and Jerry share the moments when they saw something that blew their minds on what is possible.Going Big is Smaller Than You'd ThinkRemembering the advice we received from Jared Easley in episode 39, doing something big does not have to be something daunting like launching a business or building a city the size of New York.We can have a big impact on ourselves and the lives around us simply by taking one step to being an attentive parent, a tender spouse, a valued coworker. Small steps taken consistently every day will make a big difference in the long run.ResourcesDare to Dream Bigger: Five Ways to Get There
Friend Jamie Rodriguez joins us on Beyond the Rut taking on the hot seat. She'll share how her vacation to New York City became a turning point in her life bringing her perspective and courage to pursue her dream. In a sense, she's officially the first person who has taken our advice and applied it...that we know of.Some of the questions Jamie answers are the following: Have you come across naysayers and how have you handled them? How did you prepare to start your dream? How did you have that conversation with your manager at work to announce you were leaving soon? How did they respond? What are some of the pieces you need to have in place before you take the full plunge into your dream?"Something's gotta change!" Retrain Your MindOur minds betray us. We wish to live a life of significance, but find ourselves putting off the steps that will get us where we want to be. We may be living in a state of learned helplessness after years of failure after failure. Fear holds some of us back before we ever give our dreams a shot.Fear was a powerful tool for survival thousands of years ago. The emotion that once was vital for our survival and key in our development as a society is now be the very thing that holds us back from boldly living.Darius Foroux shares with us his journey from a place of achieving success, the kind of success that everyone told him he should achieve, and pursuing a life that was a better fit for his passions and the kind of life he wanted to live. You'll hear Darius talk about overcoming his own sense of dread in life and made his own path. He'll talk about getting from a point of deciding to no longer live in the rut to reaching the goals he set for himself. Darius had to retrain his mind to look at the world from a different perspective. Our minds are powerful. Our thoughts will determine whether we take action or hold back. Fear will force us to miss deadlines and kill momentum."If there's no deadline, why are you doing it?" - Darius ForouxBio for Darius ForouxDarius Foroux is the author of Massive Life Success and founder of Procrastinate Zero, an online course designed to help you stop procrastinating, become more productive and get things done, especially the things that help you fulfill your dreams and make the world better. I love this episode! A real thinker. Author Darius Foroux used the philosophy of stoicism to create value neutral reactions to emotions around finances. Darius and Gabe discuss eliminating shameful and negative narratives about yourself, what philosophers can teach us about money, and how to stop living in extremes.
