Reclaiming Your Power: Surviving Workplace Chaos and Doing Great Work with Melissa Swift   Anika sat down with Melissa Swift, founder and CEO of Anthrome Insight, to tackle the reality of the modern workday: constant interruptions, hyper-emotional environments, and overwhelming chaos. Following the release of her new book, How to Do Great Work in a Fast Changing World, Melissa shares why systemic organizational changes are great, but individuals need actionable survival strategies now. Drawing on research from high-stakes professionals like firefighters and ER doctors, this conversation provides a practical framework for identifying your true strengths, dealing with chaotic colleagues, and recognizing when a job is fundamentally broken.   In This Episode   The COVID-era breaking point that inspired a shift from organizational strategy to individual empowerment Breaking down the "Effectiveness Architecture": Knowledge, Methods, People, and Technology The self-checkout paradox: why automating tech actually requires a massive increase in human "soft skills" The four trends making us less effective at work, with a deep dive into navigating chaos Natural chaos (the science of surprises) versus the frustration of people operating chaotically The Muppet Theory of Management: knowing when to deploy your "Order Muppets" vs. "Chaos Muppets" What corporate America can learn from firefighters about deep tech mastery and acute role clarity How organizations inadvertently gaslight employees by hiring them for jobs the company culture actively rejects Three concrete steps you can take this week to carve out space and reclaim your sanity   Timestamps   00:00 Introduction: Operating effectively in a fast-changing world 01:17 Why Melissa's audience demanded a book focused on individual survival strategies 02:52 The COVID breaking point and the metaphor of the empty Soviet streetcar 04:13 The Effectiveness Architecture: simplifying 30,000 skills into four core pillars 06:46 Why technology rollouts fail without the proper "people skills" training 09:38 Four trends destroying workplace effectiveness: intensification, emotion, transparency, and chaos 11:23 Natural chaos vs. human chaos (and the Muppet theory of team dynamics) 14:48 What white-collar workers can learn from the training habits of firefighters 19:51 The myth of the "skills gap" and the untapped power of self-directed learners 23:55 Identifying your superpower (Knowledge, Methods, People, or Tech) and overcoming stereotypes 29:45 Why role clarity is the first casualty of chaos and how to get it back 33:50 How to recognize if your job is fundamentally broken or set up to fail 39:08 Three actionable steps to reclaim your effectiveness and boundaries this week 43:35 Favorite quote: Oscar Wilde on the vital art of brevity   Key Insights & Takeaways   Insight 1: The Effectiveness Architecture Simplifies Work Instead of getting bogged down in corporate frameworks boasting 30,000 different micro-skills, individual effectiveness boils down to four clear pillars: Knowledge, Methods, People, and Technology. Identifying which pillar is your natural superpower (and which is your weakest link) allows you to partner with complementary colleagues and combat workplace stereotypes.   Insight 2: Automation Requires More "People Skills," Not Less When companies automate roles (like introducing self-checkout lanes), they often underestimate the human element. The remaining workers suddenly have to act as IT support, security, and customer de-escalation all at once. Rolling out advanced technology—including AI—without training people on the soft skills required to manage the human friction around it is a recipe for burnout.   Insight 3: Not All Chaos is Created Equal There is "natural chaos" (the inevitable surprises of a shifting economy or supply chain) and there is the unnatural chaos of colleagues operating erratically. You manage natural chaos through scenario planning, but you manage human chaos by building strict boundaries and strategically deploying the right personalities (your organized "Kermits" vs. your adaptable "Animals").   Insight 4: High-Stakes Professionals Prioritize Deep Mastery and Crisp Roles Unlike corporate workers who switch between dozens of apps a day without truly mastering any, professionals like firefighters are given the time and space to completely master a single new tool before their lives depend on it. Similarly, in an ER or on a fireground, role clarity is acute. In corporate settings, blurred roles masquerade as "collaboration," but they actually drain creativity and cause systemic failure.   Insight 5: Your Job Might Be Fundamentally Broken Sometimes your lack of effectiveness isn't your fault. If you are hired to be a "change agent" in a company that inherently rejects innovation, or if you are told to "lead through influence" without any actual resources or power, you are fighting gravity. Recognizing when a job is structurally broken is the first step in deciding whether to renegotiate your role or walk away.   Resources & Links Mentioned How to Do Great Work in a Fast Changing World by Melissa Swift Work Here Now by Melissa Swift   About Melissa Swift   Melissa Swift is the founder and CEO of Anthrome Insight, a leading organizational effectiveness consultancy. Disney fans rejoice! On this episode, veteran Imagineer Joe Lanzisero returns to talk about an unrealized Muppets attraction he worked on for Disney-MGM Studios, now Disney's Hollywood Studios, at Walt Disney World Resort. The Muppets have had a presence at Disney's Hollywood Studios since the early days. Not only were they used in early marketing for the park, but they also had a stage show called "Here Come The Muppets". They later had a second stage show entitled "Muppets on Location: Days of Swine and Roses". The most successful Muppets attraction to exist at Disney's Hollywood Studios was Muppet*Vision 3D. That entire surrounding area was supposed to be its own Muppets land, but it never came to fruition for reasons Joe and I get into. The area was initally part of Streets of America, then renamed Muppets Courtyard, and eventually Grand Avenue. Soon it will become Monstropolis when the new "Monsters, Inc." land opens in what was supposed to be The Muppet Movie Studios. Listen as Joe and I discuss The Muppet Movie Ride, a traditional animatronics dark ride where Kermit and the gang got into some crazy antics while making movies. This week, your favorite former puppeteers revisit The Muppet Show episode featuring comedy legend Gilda Radner, where the biggest scene-stealer isn't Kermit, Miss Piggy, or even Gonzo—it's a bottle of Muppet Labs Super Adhesive. What starts as another "perfectly safe" demonstration from Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker quickly spirals into one of the show's funniest running gags, as the adhesive proves remarkably good at one thing: sticking absolutely everything to absolutely everything else. Before long, Muppets, props, and unsuspecting bystanders are becoming one giant felt-and-foam sculpture, while Gilda gamely throws herself into the escalating chaos with the commitment of someone who clearly understood the assignment. We'll break down why this episode is such a masterclass in visual comedy, how the Muppets turn a simple gag into twenty-five minutes of comic gold, and why Gilda Radner's fearless, playful energy made her a perfect fit for the Muppet Theater. It's slapstick, super glue, and spectacular puppetry—the kind of episode that reminds us the best Muppet jokes don't just land... they stick.Send us Fan MailJoin the discussion on our discord! https://discord.gg/JDtWJrhPF6Follow us on twitter @PMoNPodcast and on Instagram and Threads @puppetmastersofnoneFind out more about the puppet masters on our website: https://puppetmastersofnone.wixsite.com/puppetmastersofnoneOriginal Music Composed by Taetro. @Taetro  https://www.taetro.com/

This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Public Service Fellow Julia Curlee and Senior Editors Eric Columbus and Molly Roberts to talk through the week's big news in national security, including:“The Manchurian Candidates.” In a primetime address to the nation last Thursday, July 16, President Trump declassified a trove of intelligence documents that he claimed prove America's elections are dangerously vulnerable to foreign interference—particularly by China—and revived his long-standing, evidence-free assertions that the 2020 election was “rigged” against him. He ordered the Justice Department to prosecute those he claims were involved. But intelligence officials past and present, as well as the documents themselves, draw a sharp line between foreign influence campaigns and actual interference with vote counts—and none of the material supports the claim that any votes were changed. What is actually in the documents that President Trump has declassified? And what does his speech tell us about his intentions for the midterm elections and the 2028 elections beyond?“Leak and Ye Shall Find.” The Trump administration has dramatically escalated its campaign against leakers, culminating in grand jury subpoenas served to New York Times journalists, some at their homes, over their reporting on security concerns relating to the new Qatari-gifted Air Force One. The Pentagon and the Justice Department have stood up a joint task force to “identify and prosecute leakers,” and the New York Times is now fighting the subpoenas in court, calling them an attempt to intimidate the press that treads on First Amendment rights. The administration insists that reporters aren't the targets—only the people who actually leaked—and said that the reporters are simply witnesses. How much legal jeopardy do the reporters—and the media more broadly—actually face? And is this a genuine national security effort or an assault on press freedom?“Advise and Dissent.” Two of the administration's most consequential nominees—Jay Clayton, who has been nominated as Director of National Intelligence, and Todd Blanche, who has been nominated as Attorney General—sat for their Senate confirmation hearings last week. Clayton, currently U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, repeatedly declined to say that Joe Biden won the 2020 election, while Blanche was grilled over the now-“dead” anti-weaponization fund, the Epstein files, and the very NYT subpoenas he authorized. The duo breaks down the performances and futures of co-hosts USA, Mexico, and Canada, sharing honest (and hilarious) takes on coaching, goalkeeping issues, and why North American teams need to care more about every competition. Dive into stories of international fan culture, joy, and unity—plus, the most American halftime show of all time (looking at you, Madonna and Muppets). With World Cup finale dissection, Ballon d'Or debates, and spicy soccer hot takes, this is pure banter-filled footy therapy for fans sick of bad punditry and tired tropes. The Origins Awards are an annual award that recognizes excellence in the tabletop gaming industry, including board games, card games, miniatures and roleplaying games. First presented in 1975 at the inaugural Origins Game Fair in Baltimore, the awards are currently managed by the Game Manufacturers Association or GAMA.The winner of the Roleplaying Game of the Year is the Land of Eem Deluxe Box Set by Exalted Funeral. Notably, Land of Eem is a rules-light TTRPG created by authors Ben Costa and James Parks (and based on their Rickety Stitch and the Gelatinous Goo graphic novels). It's described as a lighthearted blend of Lord of the Rings and The Muppets, with a dash of Adventure Time thrown in for good measure. The Winner of the Roleplaying Supplement of the Year is Call of Cthulhu: The Sutra of Pale Leaves – Twin Suns Rising from Chaosium. The Sutra of Pale Leaves – Twin Suns Rising is a campaign supplement for the Call of Cthulhu RPG, set in 1980s Japan. It reimagines the iconic King in Yellow mythos by having a lost, ancient scroll resurface with ties to a sinister entity. The book features three interconnected scenarios and, in addition to featuring many of the familiar Lovecraftian tropes, also explores the unique cultural and historical setting (which is a radical departure from the traditional 1920s setting of New England). But before we dive into the winners and the long list of nominees, Dr. Christina attended Origins this year. We found out Sunday during the first-ever World Cup Final halftime show, and on the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast we're talking all about what worked, and what got weird. The craziest part of the jam-packed spectacle was that the quartet of headliners weren't alone: They were joined by a robust cast of side characters, including Gustavo Dudamel directing the New York Philharmonic and Venezuela's Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra; Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt in character as Ted Lasso and Coach Beard; Staten Island's PS22 Chorus and Coldplay performing the original song "We Dance"; and yes, even The Muppets. I'm way overdue for reviewing Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets--there's several reasons for that, but I'm excited to share my thoughts on this remake--not just for the coaster but for the muppets in the park. And that's not all that's going on at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Monsters Inc. is in big build mode--everything in scaffolding and iron girders going vertical. We'll talk about the approach to this land. And then I share my emotional impressions of the new Magic of Disney Animation courtyard, which now has an opening date of September 14th, 2026. All this and more, plus a really good churro makes what's happening at this park really exciting.
