“If you address the inputs, the outputs address themselves,” says Dr. Amanda Steencken, who joins The Quantum Biology Podcast to discuss her work with primitive reflex integration work. Primitive reflexes, she explains, are the body's involuntary movements, which occur down to the subatomic level, in response to stimuli that promote brain development and keep us safe in the world.    When this connection is never stimulated, or gets turned off for myriad reasons, the results are anything from fallen arches in the foot, to chronic pain, to anxiety and learning disabilities. “We are in a perpetual state of jet lag these days, simply because we don't know what time of day it is.”   Carrie Bennett returns to the Quantum Biology Collective Podcast to discuss the importance of regulating circadian rhythms as a means to healing the gut. Every task in the body is timed to a vibrating central oscillator which acts like an internal metronome. “Getting your feet on the bare earth and watching the morning sunrise is the cheapest health intervention in maybe the history of the world,” explains Dr. Max Gulhane, MD. As a family physician and host of the Regenerative Health Podcast, Dr. Gulhane is teaching people all over the world about the importance of a healthy circadian rhythm. His own experiences with trying to heal from terrible acne in his 20s led Dr. Gulhane to recognize the critical blind spots of traditional Western medicine. The strong pharmaceuticals he was prescribed left him with undesirable psychological side effects and the widely recommended plant-based diet only made his condition worse. When he discovered the low carb lifestyle and carnivore diet, his health improved dramatically, but there was one component still missing - light. In this episode, Dr. Gulhane explains how natural health interventions like regulating circadian rhythm are the key to regenerative health. Without a biologically attuned light environment, your body does not have the opportunity to regenerate its health. This is because without the cues from the absence or presence of sunlight, the brain is unable to send the correct signals to your body that let it know when it is time to wake up, sleep, and eat. Nowadays, people typically live in homes overrun by artificial light sources and EMF waves from WiFi. These conditions are not biologically appropriate for health as the human body has evolved over thousands of years to work in alignment with the sun. When you surround yourself with artificial light and miss out on watching the sunrise and sunset, your body misses critical cues which leads to circadian dysfunction like the inability to create enough melatonin. Often people are surprised that their immune system is so connected to their emotions,” shares Dr. Kelli Ritter, quantum-certified anxiety coach and host of The Nourished Soul podcast. As a former professor and mental health focused nutritionist, Dr. Kelli has a lot of experience with the gut brain axis, or the connection between mental health and digestive health. She believes that circadian rhythm is the missing link to regulating not only physical health, but emotional health as well. In this episode, Dr. Kelli talks about the impact emotions can have on the immune system's ability to function optimally and the ways that sunlight can be used to heal physical and emotional health concerns alike. The vagus nerve runs all the way through the entire body and plays a major role in the communication process. This communication process can be interrupted by circadian dysregulation, as without enough sunlight the mitochondria are unable to produce adequate amounts of structured water and ATP. This can lead to health issues like fatigue, insomnia, digestive difficulties, and anxiety. When it comes to healing mental health conditions like anxiety, the best place to start is with circadian signaling. This means doing things like eating only during the day, sticking to seasonally appropriate foods, watching the sunrise each morning, and steering clear of harmful, artificial light sources, especially before bed.  When you regulate your circadian rhythm, not only will your physical health improve, but your mental health will as well. With Danielle Todd, Executive Director of Make Food Not Waste.   How often do you go through your pantry and refrigerator discarding perishable food items based on their “sell by” or “use by” dates? Do you rely on those dates to determine whether an item is “safe to eat?” Or, do you pay no attention and regularly eat food well past the posted date? Would you be shocked to learn that those dates have absolutely nothing to do with consumer food safety? It's true! “Sell by” dates are designed to help grocers manage their inventory and rotate stock on their shelves. It has nothing to do with food safety. As a consumer, the only date you may wish to look for in stores is the “use by” dates. However, keep in mind those dates merely indicate when the product is at its peak for quality and flavor. Although these “use by” dates have little to do with actual food safety, many of us assume that once this date has passed, the item is not safe to eat. Into  the bin it goes, where it will eventually wind up in a landfill, further contributing to the needless waste of food that could otherwise be safely  consumed.   Recent statistics reveal that Americans waste 40% of the food that is grown in this country. Most of that waste comes from consumer homes and commercial restaurants and stores. Although most of us would  assume that the majority of wasted food comes from restaurants; in reality, the biggest source of food waste occurs at home. But it doesn't have to be that way and there are simple things we can all do to reduce the problem of food waste. Grocery prices rose 13 percent over the last year outpacing the annual 8.2 percent inflation rate for all consumer products, according to the most recent Labor Department data. The price of fruits and vegetables increased by 10.4 percent, while milk increased by 15.2 percent and eggs soared by a whopping 30.5 percent. There are numerous reasons why prices rose including supply chain and transportation issues, the war in Ukraine, and extreme droughts throughout the U.S. While we can't do much to control the increased cost of groceries, we can take steps to ensure that we utilize every item of food we buy and stretch those dollars to the fullest potential.   There are so many ways to maximize our food dollars by taking the scraps we would normally discard as waste and turning them into healthy, delicious meals. For several years now restaurant chefs have been learning to reduce their overhead by doing more with the food that they purchase. Yesterday's roast chicken dinner may be today's White Chicken Chili special. The same strategies chefs employ to reduce waste can prove just as efficient in our homes. Be creative, plan ahead when you go to the grocery store, and think in terms of multiple meals you can freeze and store. If you find that you have a surplus of fresh produce or pantry items you can't use, you can always donate to “Make Food Not Waste” or a local food pantry. Remember that every single day is a gift and the gift we get from learning to upcycle food not only benefits our wallet but it can provide a wonderful gift to others in the community and it may very well help save the environment and our planet. Doctors often say that IBS is a life-long condition. But does not have to be true. What people often fail to do is identify and treat the underlying causes of their gut problem. Today’s guest is here to share how she helps her patients get to the root cause of their IBS so that they can make lasting healing changes.   About Abigail Hueber, RD Abigail Hueber is an Integrative Functional Dietitian and owner of the private practice Above Health Nutrition. She received her undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College in the field of Health and Exercise Sciences and completed her graduate studies in nutrition at Simmons College. Abby has completed various advanced trainings in functional medicine, including a mentorship with functional medicine doctors and comprehensive immersion programs. Abby is an expert in digestive health which includes IBS, SIBO, acid reflux, chronic constipation or diarrhea, and other various GI symptoms and concerns. She also specializes in skin health through healing the digestive system for skin symptoms which include eczema, rosacea, acne, keratosis pilaris, and other skin-gut-related conditions. Abby leads speaking series and events for organizations and corporate wellness programs on a variety of health and wellness topics.   Why Gut Problems Can’t Be Ignored At least one in five people experience digestion problems. Yet, these are often dismissed as just mildly annoying symptoms. Abby explains how ignoring gut issues often leads to any number of other health issues. That’s why it’s important to treat the root causes of digestion problems. The tricky part is identifying what is wrong in the first place. It’s not enough to just cut out certain foods. In fact, elimination diets don’t really fix anything. They can even cause problems if continued for too long.   The Common Causes of GI Issues Abby explains what the three generalized root causes of IBS are. There can be many different factors at play, but Abby finds that it usually involves one or more just three situations. The first is digestive insufficiency - when someone is not producing or excreting the optimal digestive substances. Sometimes there’s dysbiosis or a GI infection at play. Inflammation is also a common culprit. Once you know what’s going on in the gut, you can make a roadmap for healing. Sometimes these can be remediated with lifestyle changes, like slowing down and thoroughly chewing food. Targeted supplement protocols can also help to reverse some of the problems. Skin issues can come from just about anywhere. Frequently, people are given inaccurate or unhelpful advice from conventional medical providers. That’s why it’s so important to understand where these skin issues come from and how we can best treat them.   About Dr. Julie Greenberg Dr. Julie Greenberg is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor who specializes in integrative dermatology. She is the founder of the Center for Integrative Dermatology, a holistic clinic that approaches skin problems by finding and treating the root cause. Dr. Greenberg holds degrees from Northwestern University, Stanford University, and Bastyr University. She lectures at naturopathic medical schools and speaks at conferences across the U.S. on the topics of hair, skin, and nails. Dr. Greenberg is the Program Chair for the Naturopathic & Integrative Dermatology Series at LearnSkin, a 20 course CE program for doctors that discuss evidence-based alternative approaches to treating dermatological conditions.   Getting to the Root Cause of Chronic Skin Conditions No single system of your body exists in isolation. This includes your skin. Problems in your gut often show up as a skin condition. Dr. Greenberg explains how to heal your microbiome by getting diverse inputs from lots of different foods, particularly fibrous ones, to get your gut back on track. By correctly addressing the root causes of skin conditions this way, you can start to see actual changes. Fixing the gut to heal the skin usually means getting your microbiome back in balance. Dr. Greenberg talks about how antibiotics, certain medications, alcohol, and lack of fiber can all lead to issues like leaky gut. Leaky gut is at the root of so many dermatological conditions. When food passes through the mucosal barrier in the intestines, inflammation will naturally follow.   The Connection Between Your Skin and Your Food Fortunately, there is a lot that you can do to address these issues. Dr. Greenberg describes how reducing toxins and taking care of your immune system goes a long way. There are also some foods to avoid if you have certain sensitivities. Dairy and wheat are big ones to stay away from for many people in general since they often cause inflammation. For those with specific diseases, such as rosacea, hot foods and spice are often the culprits. Since food sensitivities come in so many forms, it is important to work with your practitioner to discover what’s best for you. Food freedom might sound like a completely unrealistic option for you. But what if I told you that you can listen to your body, eat more or less what your body needs and wants, and still achieve the results you want? It’s about finding that balance between intuitive eating and making sure the food you do eat is as healthy and nutritious as it can be.   How to Retrain Your Body from Chronic Fasting Asking your body if it wants to eat Knowing when you’re full  Balancing your meals  Following intuitive eating without being super specific   The Chief Complaint: "I Can't Have Food Freedom and Achieve Results" There is this common misconception that we have to be so strict with our food and follow all these restrictive diets in order to actually lose weight. Even more than this, that you can’t possibly eat what your body craves without gaining weight. Let’s talk about why this is absolutely not the case!   What Food Freedom Is You can have total food freedom while still hitting your goals and achieving the results you want. In fact, when you learn to trust your body and pick up on the cues it gives you, your goals will actually be way easier to hit. Not to mention way less restrictive. Food freedom is all about tapping into your intuition and listening to your body. Eat when you’re hungry and stop eating when you’re full. If these are completely new concepts to you, it really is all about slowing down and paying attention. A good example is that I know I’m in fat-burning mode when my body is craving fattier foods. Similarly, if I’ve been going really hard in the gym, I know that I will need to up my protein intake to nourish my muscles.   Finding Your Own Optimal Health So many of us eat when we’re not hungry, for whatever reason. Sometimes, that reason is actually anxiety, which can mimic hunger signals. That’s why it’s important to get really in tune with your body’s wants and needs. What I’d really encourage you to do is figure out what optimal health looks and feels like for you. Not what some exercise program or diet tells you is right, but what actually feels good. Included in this might be a ten-pound weight range where that fluctuates based on your body’s needs at the time. If you do want to achieve some more specific body results, I’d recommend combining intuitive eating with my mindful macros approach. This way, you eat what’s best for your body while still fuelling it with the nutrients and macros it needs to perform best.   Homework for Women Physicians What does food freedom mean to you? If you've ever wondered how you can mindfully reduce your sugar intake, this episode is right up your alley! We know that sugar can trigger skin rash flares, gut problems, and increase inflammation in the body (aside from contributing to blood sugar and hormone issues). While there are a lot of people that would swear to you that sugar is the devil and you should avoid it at all costs, I like to take a more pragmatic approach. We all live in the real world and have to take steps that are practical and sustainable over idealistic (that can lead some on the path to disordered eating). Sugar is all around us… and rather than fearing it, let's talk about some better options! Options that could reduce sugar intake within your home that won't have you (or family members) dumping treats in the trash because they taste like artificial chemicals. Nor leave you afraid to eat (which is an unfortunate common problem in our community). Here's my advice on healthy sweetener alternatives that I often share with my nutrition clients! In this episode: Why I encourage my nutrition clients to avoid trying to go entirely sugar-free My top 4 recommended low or no-calorie alternative sweeteners Pros + cons of specific alternative sweeteners (some can trigger rashes!)
