Hey, it's Amy Newmark with your Chicken Soup for the Soul and today I'm sharing stories from our new dog book in an episode called My Dog the Juvenile Delinquent. We spent two years collecting the stories for this book and they are really entertaining, but also pretty inspirational, because they show us how fabulous the dogs in our lives are. Even when they're being bad, really bad, we brag about just how bad they were! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Show Notes Episode 472: “Are You Threatening Me?!” This week Host Dave Bledsoe got blasted on Espresso Martinis when he gatecrashed a charity fundraiser and was ejected after screaming he needed “TP for his bunghole” (Just an average Tuesday afternoon.) On the show this week we took a look at the cultural high water mark of 90's television: Beavis and Butthead. Along the way we discovered that Dave tried to murder his cousin with fireworks. (Or at least traumatize him for life.) Then we dove right into the story with a short history of animation from Neanderthals to Walt Disney. (We asked him to stop, he just won't!) Then we meet Mike Judge, a Baby Boomer who was so Gen X he created pretty much all Gen X comedy culture. (Dave made Gavin wear a Winger t-shirt in the studio all week.) Then we learned all the ways that Beavis and Butthead were destroying the youth of America and why none of them were things that actually happened. Finally we wrapped up with an interesting theory that Mike Judge might just be a prophet. Our Sponsor this week is the Thomas Anderson School for Juvenile Delinquents, got kids whacking off in your tool shed, you send them to Thom. How should the age of a juvenile be taken into account when looking a the severity of a crime?
Ruby and Arlo lean into impossibility and seek out the talking goat.
Juvenile DelinquentnounA juvenile delinquent refers to a young person, typically under the age of 18, who has committed an act that would be considered a crime if committed by an adult. These acts often violate laws or societal norms and can range from petty offenses to more serious crimes. Juvenile delinquency can encompass a wide range of behaviors, including vandalism, theft, drug offenses, assault, and even more severe offenses like homicide. This podcast includes tracks by: The Milkshakes, The Soda Pop Kids, The Gories, Dead Boys, Zombie Ghost Train, and mo'! Key Points, Top Takeaways and Memorable Quotes - “From there, just talk about being resilient and just really trying to continue to press forward and not be like the people that we hung out with. I didn't want to be in that lifestyle the rest of my life, so that's kinda how I started pulling myself out of the pit.” 3:22“This looks like it's going in the right direction, and they were supportive. They weren't shoving stuff down my throat. They weren't telling me, you know, it was really weird because it was more positive reinforcement instead of negative, it wasn't about punishment, it was about, ‘hey look, if you do this, look at what this will lead to.'” 14:33“Listen, if it's not life or death, it really isn't life or death, right. Don't make it life or death.” 21:05“Just go do what you want to do and really don't ask us to approve it because we want you to do what you want to do. But if you're gonna pick, you better give it 100% effort, what we've been telling you since little league days.” 26:39“That's what I tell kids when I'm talking to them. Be proud of what you're going through because you're learning so much and you're so battle tested. The things that get some of these kids upset today, it's not going to upset you because you've gone down the rabbit hole deep, and you've survived.” 29:43“I tell all these guys the same thing; make each other better. You're going to have ups and downs and it's just a matter of working through them. You chose to marry each other for a reason, don't forget that reason!” 35:15 Guest Bio - Kurt Varricchio redefines the meaning of a difficult childhood in his intimate memoir, Behind in the Count: My Journey from Juvenile Delinquent to Baseball Agent. Whether it was trying to fill his empty stomach with one last scoop of Ovaltine, getting tied to a tree, being punished with a wrench, or sleeping on the rooftops of local strip malls, Kurt's survival is nothing short of miraculous. After losing his father at two-years-old, his childhood commenced in a dilapidated home where physical and emotional abuse ran rampant. So, Kurt did what he had to do to survive: run. And steal. After several trips to juvenile hall and group homes across the state of Florida, law officials, prison guards, and even his own family thought his fate was sealed—right behind those impenetrable bars. Kurt was ultimately removed from his family and placed in Florida's Foster Care System just before his 12th birthday. It would've been easy to quit, but this isn't Kurt. Even as a child, he knew he didn't want his broken past to define him. He persevered, focusing on his academic and emotional development. After graduating from high school with a 4.0 grade point average, Kurt received a full ride to Florida State University, then continued his education at the University of Texas at Austin, receiving a Master's in Education. In search of a “new normal”, Kurt understood that education was paramount. Eventually, Kurt obtained his law degree and has been working in professional sports since 1995, first in the NFL and MLB, then as a sports agent. Providing a first-hand glimpse of what it takes to transform a chronic juvenile delinquent into a productive member of society, Kurt reflects on his childhood with a poignant examination of the hard work required to battle when the odds are against you. No matter how behind you are in the count, Kurt reminds us that you can always mold yourself into the person you want to be. Her childhood was filled with danger, confusion, and angst. Picture East LA in the 1990s - neighborhoods filled with gang violence. Police were overstepping their authority, creating fear and mistrust. Drive-by shootings. Riots. Burning buildings. All the media portrayals from that era were very real for Rosie Acosta in those days. Growing up in such a harsh environment took a toll on this episode's guest. By the age of fifteen, Rosie found herself standing before a judge, facing severe penalties for a surprisingly bold and brash crime. Her youth had plenty of anxiety and confusion. Because she witnessed people getting stabbed, shot, and beat up on the street, Rosie had PTSD. She also knew nothing about health and nutrition in her young life. Living on the “McDonald's Diet,” Rosie was over two hundred pounds at one point, living a life of quiet desperation. Confusion followed Rosie around like a dark cloud, mainly due to the spiritual mixed messages and failures she witnessed happening inside her community growing up. (Rosie shares her childhood in detail with Wade during the first part of the episode. Wade's attention is riveted to her compelling story. Don't miss it.) But then, one day, her mother left some brochures on her bed, and that's when Rosie's journey took a spiritual turn that changed everything. (You will hear her powerful story about how meditation and yoga transformed her soul to a place of Radical Love.) Today, Rosie is a yoga and meditation teacher and a holistic health coach who works with a wide range of students. Her clients range from East LA residents to Olympic athletes, NFL champions, NBA All-Stars, and military veterans who have seen combat. Rosie is on a mission to help others overcome adversity, anxiety, and low self-worth and replace those negatives with radical love. She has been featured in Yoga Journal, Well + Good, Forbes, and the New York Post. If you want to feel radically loved, hit that play button. In this podcast, we cover: What was a typical day like in Rosie's childhood and how she navigated all the dangerous traps Her recounting of the day she skipped school to seek enlightenment The exact moment when Rosie's spiritual awakening took place Why do people need to get past their “Amazon Expectations” Why does the law of attraction kick in when you get your fitness on track Why and when things turned in a positive direction for Rosie When a person exudes electromagnetic attraction and becomes what they seek How yoga led her out of teen crimes to teaching yoga to star athletes How Rosie mentally pushes through those lazy, apathetic moments we all experience The Power of Intention At one point, Rosie says, “I do believe in the power of intention and the power of belief. Also, the right people are coming in at the right time.” “The moment that I started to bring my awareness to feeling good and focusing on my body and my health, everything else started to fall into place.” “I started getting different job opportunities. I ended up working as a hair salon manager for this celebrity hairstylist. Here I was 19 years old and an ex-criminal - yet I got asked to run a million dollar business.” “Now, he didn't need to know my colorful past. At the time he offered me the job, I was working at another salon, and he recruited me because he heard that I was doing a great job.” “So that's all it took - one opportunity. One person believed in me and gave me that sort of positive feedback. At the time, I was still learning more. I got more into nutrition and health. I got off the McDonald's diet. I started eating organic foods. I read the China Study. I went deep into wellness. I made a new set of friends.” “My world started to expand. I started to see the difference in putting your energy into things that were making you better. I felt better. I started attracting people in my life that were also doing the same type of work that wanted to be better as well.” One thing Rosie loves about yoga is THIS Another snippet of Rosie's wisdom: “One of the main things I like about yoga is cultivating discernment.” Wade asks, “What does that mean to you?” Rosie: “For me, it means knowing what to do when you're off of the safety of your cushion. Because I know what to do when I'm on my mat. I know what to do when I'm on my cushion. That's easy for me. I've been doing it for years now, almost two decades. That's easy.” “But taking that and actually going out into the world and being a kind, compassionate, present human, that's a different story. There are so many variables thrown into that, which are happening simultaneously. Discernment means to know the difference between knowing what's going to serve the highest good.” “Sometimes things that you may not think are going to serve your highest good serve do serve your highest good.” “It's difficult to navigate a world that's full of impermanence. It's difficult to navigate a world that's constantly changing.” Wade and Rosie then go into more conversation about impermanence and our mortality. Death is a topic that is kept tidy and tucked away in western culture. But Wade brings up the eastern view of death, and Rosie expands on our impermanence and how we struggle by clinging to this material world. This turns out to be one of Wade's most in-depth interviews - a conversation that goes deep into the spiritual realm of our existence. Rosie's clients see firsthand how physical transformation leads to spiritual transformation. Or, at least it should. The person must be mindful to include spirituality into their life for a complete sense of wholeness. Can you feel the radical love? Tune into this episode and tap in! Adults complaining about "kids these days" is hardly new. For centuries, adults have been wringing their hands and clutching their pearls over the behaviour of the young - from sex, drugs, and rock and roll, to fears about novels corrupting the youth. This week, we explore the ways young people have rebelled against expectations, engaged in risky behaviours, and generally pushed back against the rules.TW: discussions of sexual assault, child abuse, gang violence
ST. DOMINIC SAVIO | PATRON OF THE SMALL BOYS, THE FALSELY ACCUSED AND THE JUVENILE DELINQUENTS. Feast Day: May 6 To give us inspiration today is a young saint who was a model of piety, purity and care He is no other than the famous St. Dominic Savio. Remember the saint closely related him? His mentor and biographer? Yes, St. John Bosco, or Don Bosco, Founder of the Salesian Order. Now, St. Dominic was born in San Giovanni, Piedmont, Italy on April 2, 1842 to a poor but devout Christian family. There were nine children in the brood, but the parents taught them how to love God. Even as a young boy, Dominic was well-behaved and loved to pray. At the age of seven, Dominic asked to receive his First Holy Communion. The age for children to receive First Communion at that time was 12 years old. But the parish priest who had observed how good the boy was, made an exception and allowed him. On the day of his First Holy Communion, Dominic made the following resolutions: to have as friends Jesus and Mary and to die rather than commit sin. When Don Bosco visited the parish of Dominic, the parish priest introduced the boy to the holy Founder. They conversed and Don Bosco immediately agreed to take Dominic with him to the Oratory for boys. At the oratory, the great preoccupation of Dominic was to become a saint. He would make big penances. When Don Bosco noticed it, he told him that as a child he must spend more time to his studies. Once, he was falsely accused, but he did not justify himself. Don Bosco was greatly edified when the true culprit was discovered. After some time, Dominic's health started to deteriorate. The doctor suggested that he go home to recover, but Dominic refused to leave. Don Bosco insisted that it was good to be home so as to recover at once. Dominic, on his part, had the feeling that he was going to die soon. Before leaving, he prayed the Prayer for a Happy Death. Four days later, his health worsened. He asked to have Confession and after confessing, he fell asleep, only to wake up a few hours later to say goodbye to his parents. Then he exclaimed "Oh, what wonderful things I see." Then he closed his eyes again and slept the sleep of death. It was March 9, 1857. He was 14 years old. Dominic was beatified in Rome on March 5, 1950, by Pope Pius XII and was canonized on June 12, 1954, by the same Pontiff. He is the patron of small boys, the falsely accused and the juvenile delinquents. “St. Dominic, what prayerful child you have been. We pray to you to help today's children to imitate your piety and holy life and have Jesus as a friend.” Am I afraid to commit sin and avoid occasion of sin, or I don't care at all?

But during this transition to near completely virtual lives, what about the generation that doesn't have the same knowledge about technology that we do? Many of these older adults are being left behind without any opportunities to learn how to use these devices. This is the mission of Teens Teach Technology, a youth organization led by teenagers dedicated to teaching older adults how to properly use their technology. Today, we're joined by their founder, Asmita Mittal, and Nicole Lau, their head of PR. They're here to talk with us about their efforts to make us more media literate. Getting Out of a Rut (0:19:32) Lisa and Richie talk about what they do when they feel like they're getting stuck in a rut. Plant Propagation at Home (0:35:30) They've taken up residence in the corners of our rooms, on our windowsills, and hanging from our ceilings—houseplants... they now fill our homes. And while plant ownership might have started as a trend, it has now firmly taken root in our culture. But what if you could do more than you might have thought with your favorite houseplants? Plant propagation is one way you can expand your houseplant operations. So, we invited Darryl Cheng on the show to tell us more about it. He's the author of The New Plant Parent and creator of House Plant Journal. I'm Not a Juvenile Delinquent (0:52:44) “There is a balm in Gilead” or so the verse goes. In the context of the New Testament, the balm is a reference to spiritual medicine. But for Sharon Charde and the girls of Touchstone residential treatment center, it took the form of medicine of a literary nature. For 10 years, Sharon conducted weekly writing therapy sessions with the girls of Touchstone. Here to discuss her experiences and that of the girls of Touchstone is Sharon Charde, licensed professional counselor and author of I am not a Juvenile Delinquent. Great Pacific Garbage Patch (1:13:57) Everyone knows that plastic enters the ocean in large amounts every year. But did you know that there is so much plastic that enters the ocean that there is an entire island of it in the Pacific Ocean? This is called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and island might not even be the correct word to describe it as there is enough plastic to make up many islands. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch grows in size each year and has become an extreme problem. Nancy Wallace, a member of the National Ocean Service, is here today to help us better understand the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and how it affects us. Fall Hair Trends (1:27:34) Today's hair trends tend to not be as dramatic as the Farrah Fawcett look, but we still have them nonetheless. In the summer, people cut their hair short and get brightly colored highlights. But what are the hair trends during the fall? Today, we've invited friend of the show and instructor for L'oreal Professionnel, Michelle Lindsay, on the show to tell us all we need to know about 2020's fall hair trends.

Dr. Judy and Scott Budnick get together to talk about why he left a red-hot career in Hollywood behind to start the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, a non-profit organization with the mission of ending mass incarceration, improving the community, and promoting impactful policy change. Scott is well-known for being one of the executive producers of The Hangover but after a fateful visit to Sylmar Juvenile Hall, he began to follow a different dream: to work in criminal justice reform and to provide mentorship and employment opportunities for incarcerated youth. Scott describes how he was able to have empathy and take compassionate action with a population that is largely forgotten by society, many of whom were victims of neglect, trauma, and physical or sexual abuse without positive role models to show them the way to living a responsible and meaningful life. Scott tells incredible stories of how he helped disenfranchised youth turn their life around and become productive and helpful citizens upon release, drastically reducing the stark recidivism rates that plague our country. Scott’s heartfelt commitment and his passionate voice to this cause has attracted meaningful partnerships with legislators, politicians, movie studios, employers, and celebrities, including Emmy, Grammy, and Academy Award Winning musician Common. His phenomenal activism includes continuing to provide creative resources for education and healing to inmates during the pandemic, and his triumphant return to filmmaking by partnering with Warner Bros. to create Just Mercy. This award-winning film was paired with the largest social impact initiative ever tied to a film, between a Common concert at California Rehabilitation Center to movie screenings for policy makers. Scott’s energy and enthusiasm is truly contagious, and his message of hope and positivity, especially during this challenging time amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd protests for racial equality, is so refreshing, incredibly timing, and sorely needed. If you have a passion to start an initiative or want to offer help to people who are suffering, this episode will provide you with the tools you need to roll up your sleeves today and do something impactful. By learning the skills of empathy and compassionate action, you will become an expert at communication, persuade and motivate those around you, and solve problems and handle conflicts with greater ease. These skills will supercharge your own success and relationships and help you to live a purposeful, joyful life. Come along and listen in as Scott teaches all of us how we can spread our own positive messages to the world like wildfire, and how each of us can make a difference in the lives of our loved ones and our community at large. In this episode, we discuss: Startling statistics regarding the prison system, budget, and recidivism (2:20) The moment that changed Scott’s life (3:15) Scott’s “woke” moment and the valuable lessons he learned from his parents (10:30) The shocking commonality among many incarcerated youths (12:45) The power of mentorship and why every kid need someone to show up for them (15:05) How Scott advocated for a bill to ban a juvenile life without parole in California (20:50) The rehabilitation problem in the U. S. and how we should fix it (28:50) Are there prisoners who cannot and should not be rehabilitated? (34:25) Scott’s triumphant return to filmmaking with Just Mercy and how he married his two passions (37:10) SuperCharged Tips for Empathy and Compassionate Action (42:00) https://www.drjudyho.com https://www.instagram.com/drjudyho https://twitter.com/drjudyho https://www.facebook.com/doctorjudyho https://www.instagram.com/stage29podcasts https://twitter.com/stage29podcasts https://www.facebook.com/Stage29Podcasts https://www.instagram.com/scottbudnick1 https://antirecidivism.org https://www.facebook.com/antirecidivismcoalition Learn more about your ad choices.
